Review "A powerful blend of post-apocalyptic fiction, science fiction and brass-knuckle social commentary ... Outland Exile is a towering tour de force of a novel. ...Relentlessly visionary, thematically profound and impeccably edited, it is one of those rare stories that both entertains and enlightens, providing a nightmarish glimpse into America's post-apocalyptic future that will stay with readers long after the last page is turned. In short, Outland Exile is a must-read for anyone who loves speculative fiction." -Blue Ink Review October 2015
From the Author The world is getting older. People live longer now on average than any time in the species history. The world is getting younger. The average age of people in some countries has dropped into the twenties. On the 4th of July 2008, I mentioned to a 10 year old Ghanaian boy that it was America's birthday. He could hardly credit that. I went on to mention that both Ghana and the USA had been the colonies of England. He corrected me. "Ghana has never been a colony," he assured me. Having witnessed Nrumah's rise to dictatorship when I was about my friend's age, I wondered what kind of world a short cultural memory might bring. That speculation and the intersection of age, power and faith is a series of book that I have planned called "Old Men and Infidels." Outland Exile is the first installment. Book Two is in draft and the outlines for three and four are done.

Outstanding, Exhilarating Outland Exile By NinaDunton I read mostly nonfiction, but this futuristic novel caught my attention for its projection of future social and political constructs. The protagonist, Malila, finds her world upended once, then twice as she struggles to decide which of two worldviews she wants to embrace. It's well-written and thought-provoking. How do we know if our government is lying to us? What real values are worth fighting for? I find it reminiscent of "Brave New World," but with fast-moving action and short chapters that pull you along with the narrative. The end didn't satisfy me, but I understand a sequel is in the works!

Brilliantly conceived-beautifully executed By Charles Freedom Long Set in the post-apocalyptic realms of the Democratic Unity of America and their enemy, the Reorganized States of America, Outland Exile is the story of Lieutenant Malila Chiu, who is ordered to take her platoon of DUFS (Democratic Unity Forces for Security), out into the Outlands to repair a “sniffer” station that’s been taken out of commission. She is kidnapped and taken on an arduous journey deep into the heart of the RSA.What happens to her, what she learns and does is a cautionary tale, strongly reminiscent of Huxley’s Brave New World and Orwell’s 1984, updated for today’s virtual reality, youth-obsessed culture. There’s ThiZ, the new soma, a soporific drug made freely available, a nation of shallow sheeple effectively ruled by the DUFS, the Outland “savages”, the overarching new Big Brother, CORE, and the O-A, an implant that allows the recipient to quest within the CORE using only the mind to explore CORE space. Boutwell ties all these apparently disparate elements together in a brilliantly conceived and beautifully executed book that continues to rebound in your mind after you’ve read it.

Into The Outland By Bennetts family From the safety and security of her engineered society, Lieutenant Malila Chiu is thrust into the wasteland and into an exile that awakens her to the reality of life beyond the confines of a technological utopia that really isn't. An adventure, a coming of age story, a cautionary tale, and a compelling blend of near future science fiction & rugged pioneer western, this book reminded me in some ways of Robert Heinlein's Starship Troopers, Harlan Ellison's classic A Boy and His Dog, and (perhaps most surprisingly) Cormac McCarthy's Blood Meridian. A new favorite author? Maybe. A book worth reading? Definitely.
