20 of 21 people found the following review helpful. a complete waste of time and money By Mark Steele This book completely fails in terms of both quantity and quality of content. Unfortunately negative stars are not a review option. I do not know what the author's qualifications are but it comes across as a middle school paper on water. My quals you ask? I am a licensed professional engineer with a masters in environmental engineering with more than twenty years of interest in water for survival, emergency, or off grid situations.First - to quantity. This is advertised as a 40-something page book so I did not expect an engineering text. However the page number is a stretch. Based on my kindle, the first 18% of this book is front matter. The last 12% consists of ads for other books. So 30% of what is already a tiny book is gone already. I paged through the book and did a word count estimate of 6,000 words or less of content. To put that in perspective, a typical nonfiction business book is 50,000-60,000.Quantity aside, a handy pocket sized book would be great if it were full of useful accurate information. Unfortunately that is not the case with this book. Here is a quote that made me laugh out loud:"A shallow well can be dug by nearly anyone who has the time and inclination. Detailed instructions for doing so are beyond the scope of this book."Detailed instructions for anything are apparently beyond the scope of this. I could sum up the whole book:1)Water is important2)Wells are good. So is rainwater harvesting except where it is illegal (oddly the author never mentions surface water sources).3)Treatment: You can add bleach or iodine. You can filter it using the upside down filter described in the book (it is upside down because although the author uses powdered charcoal and sand he does so in a way that the water passes through the charcoal before the sand - this is backwards). Or boil it.Here is what the author says about boiling:"Using Heat The final method of water purification is to simply boil it. There aren't too many contaminants that can withstand being boiled for longer than ten minutes or so."That's it! The author's entire discussion of thermal disinfection. And it's wrong! First, heat does not purify water, it disinfects it. Admittedly that is a technicality. But second, all sorts of non-biological contaminants will survive boiling. In fact, you might be making them more concentrated. And third, to disinfect water you need to pasteurize it - not boil it. Pasteurization temperatures for water range from 145-160 deg F - significantly less than boiling temperature (210). This is not as important for a survival situation in which you would have no way of knowing water temp. However, if thermal disinfection is your primary means of treating your water in an off grid situation, then following this book and boiling your water for 10 minutes will waste almost 40% of your fuel. Certainly an important consideration.Probably the best advice in the book is the ending: "Good luck! Happy Homesteading". If you follow this book, you will need good luck.

By Emma Smith Interesting read.I find comfort in knowing that there are still knowledgable and brilliant people who knows that water is essential to life and that it is vastly coming to shortage in every part of the globe and people are acting as though it's not happening. Still oblivious.

Good very basic overview By Nero I was hoping for a little more in depth content on water filtering not just simple basics but in general it is a good basic overview of water capturing to purification to finally storing with a few helpful calculations.
