Lies about Learning to Lead By Amazon Customer There is nothing more frustrating than working in an organization where talent and opportunities are squandered by a lack of leadership—at all levels of the business. In More Lies About Learning, Terry Traut’s chapter “Lies About Learning to Lead” stresses that leadership is really about getting others to excel and points out that new leaders are rarely taken aside and shown how provide that kind guidance to a team. The chapter tackles three major lies that management may tell themselves about the need for leadership development—that learning to lead is easy, that leadership training doesn’t have to re-tool on a regular basis, and that the latest leadership guru’s theories or training products are going to be useful in the context of your organization. Traut emphasizes that for leadership development to be effective it must be supported across an organization and must be ongoing. This chapter provides a good guide to approaching leadership training and clearly demonstrates how imperative it is for organizational success and the entire collection of essays in More Lies About Learning are equally thought provoking.

It helped me understand that the skills that made me successful as an individual contributor are not the same skills required to be successful as a leader. Terry did a great job of helping me shift my perspective on what is important in my new role. Chapter 5 provides five things an effective leader must focus on as well as a proven path to success. In the midst of more lies about learning, I found chapter 5 to be honestly brilliant. Thanks Terry
