By Amazon Customer I picked up Wolter’s Reading Upside Down as a free-select book for a graduate course on Introduction to Literacy Studies at one large R1 university in the Midwest. I chose this book because it offers critical lens at looking at some of the real cases in the literacy instruction in many of our schools. After reading theories and research in literacy studies, Reading Upside Down provides real cases of what literacy instruction looks like in real classrooms and consequences of the policies in place for developing and challenging readers, creating stimulating discussions on "theory/research in practice" in literacy instruction.What is most interesting about this book for me is the shift from looking at literacy issues as the achievement gaps, which everybody concerns about, to opportunity gaps, by inviting and challenging educators to honestly reflect on their practices, the environment they are in and the policies in place and encourage them to make changes. By so doing, this book empowers educators to develop ownership and expertise to create caring, personal, and inclusive environment in their own specific context for early readers who traditionally are seen as unready, at-risk, struggling, or other labels attached to developing readers.Overall, Reading Upside Down offers the much-needed perspectives in the early literacy instructions. It fits well for courses in literacy studies, literacy education or education policies and the like. In addition, due to its reflective and practical nature, it makes a good read for general audience who concerns, wants to learn more, and advocate toward improving the literacy experience and performance of developing readers.
1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Must read for all teachers! By N. Asher This book is a must read for all teachers, not just those teaching reading or early childhood educators. I say this because many students are behind in academic, and even in older grades, where they can be even further behind. This can be true, especially those with disabilities, and for those with hearing disabilities, reading is everything to keep on par with students with more opportunities to receive information. Wolter's book clearly explains opportunity gaps that underachieving students have, and how teachers unknowingly perpetuates and reinforce it. This books will give all teachers some background and a change in their mindsets on how to meet their students individual needs where they are currently, and how to create and offer increases in opportunities for them to catch up. With teachers in the proper mindset, Wolter explains how all children can succeed, and be excited and engaged in being all that they can be.
