A masterpiece in two parts, G.K. Chesterton's Manalive is a commentary on the "Holy Fool" trope that shows up in many classic texts such as Don Quixote. The book follows the fun loving Innocent Smith who, after bringing joy to a boarding house, is charged with a series of crimes including attempted murder. The second half covers the trial which, through many twists and turns, brings out a stunning conclusion that touches upon many larger ideas. At the center of the novel is the idea of human life, and what makes everyday living worthwhile.

Chesterton's Manalive on the reading list of any university English course, or on any English professor's list of favorite books. It should, however, be regarded a great work of English literature, precisely because it is a prime example of what modern literary critics despise. That is, it is something to which the common man can relate. It is the story of us all, specifically of our common, everyday lives.Chesterton demonstrates rather poetically that our lives are not mere drudgery and that there is nothing at all boring about domesticity. To the contrary, marriage and home are adventures more exciting than we conceive. Modern philosophy and modern science have succeeded in "killing" many of us before we physically die by convincing us that the beautiful things in life are only drudgery which happens to be necessary to survival. But Chesterton urges us back to life! He urges us to defy modern conventions by being truly happy and keeping the commandments.

He appears crazy, just because he refuses to take anything for granted, but that is how he manages to truly enjoy ordinary life as the best of adventures. This book is a hundred years old, but it is still incredibly actual. It also contains the best marriage proposal I have ever read. The style may not be as fast-paced as today's bestsellers, but it is clever, witty and thoroughly enjoyable. The embedded mystery story is also very intriguing: Innocent Smith is accused of multiple crimes, from murder to burglary to polygamy, which are resolved in the most unexpected ways.A wonderful book.

Chesterton, but this one is so far my favorite. the characters, painted in terms of philosophical opinion, come alive with the familiarity of old friends, and the author gives the humdrum landscape of early 1900s England a mystical sheen of fairytale-like wonder. the book opens on a world full of fashionable melancholy and scientific fatalism, in a little inn occupied by people in varying degrees of ill humor; into this world jumps (quite literally) the outlandish figure of Innocent Smith, who proceeds to turn the world upside-down in order to turn it right-way up.this book is a joy to read; one of the few works of philosophy fiction that won't leave you in a depressed slump.my only warning would be that towards the end of the book a lot of printing errors occur. at one point a dialogue between a few of the characters is written as one quotation by a completely different character. it's a little annoying, but for the price not too hard to piece together.all in all, a very awesome by book by an awesome author.
