Orphaned at just ten years of age, Raulin vows to track down the eleven men who murdered his family and make them pay for what they have taken from him; however, he finds himself thrust into the middle of a conflict that soon proves to be much bigger than his quest for revenge. Can he become the man his father always envisioned or will the hatred in his heart make him into the very man he is hunting? Conscripted into the Keepers at a young age, Bruschian—now thirty—is finally about to get his first true tasted of freedom. He must discover who he will become now that he is no longer forced to bear arms in the name of a Church in which he does not believe. After all these years, is he more than just the killer they created? Raulin: Rise of the Forest King, takes place in the years prior to the events of The Keeper of Edelyndia. It is the origin story of a fledgling rebellion and an orphaned king.

One heck of a page turner By Amanda Possibly even better than The Keeper of Edelyndia, Denen has further proven his writing and character development skills. I never wanted to put this book down. Very much looking forward to what comes next for the people in Edelyndia!

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Good read. By Amazon Customer Overall, this was a very good read. Definitely a page turner. My only complaint is common with most books I read electronically. There were a number of glaring editorial mistakes. Wrong words, word processing slip-ups, etc. made for some unpleasant distractions. However, I'm getting used to them.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Interesting Characters... By j b Though this is a prequel, and I did indeed read The Keeper of Edelyndia first, I actually preferred it that way. Over the past 15 years I've almost exclusively read Christian Fiction and lately Christian fantasy. For me it is a great escape. I appreciated the author's restraint in not using this genre as a disguise for another romance novel. The books were genuinely interesting, very visual, just the right amount of characters to understand where you are in the story line with good character development. Good vs evil but not too predictable. I thoroughly enjoyed both books in the series. When is the next one coming out? I'm ready!

Sorcery, an arcane mystical power wielded by white-bearded old men with fancy sticks? Or just another pain in Matt Hawkins’ neck? Matt knows which he would prefer, which is more likely, and that they’re not the same thing… Life’s looking up for Brisbane’s only badarse, supernatural-battling warrior. There’s been a distinct lack of marauding Old World baddies and no noticeable interference from demons. Just a nice steady stream of ‘small’ jobs to keep Matt and the tame vampire, Mercy, in home, food and clothes. And when PI Erin McRea contracts them for a sting, Matt’s happy to oblige. It is, after all, easy money. Naturally, nothing goes according to plan. Erin’s mark dies in highly suspicious circumstances and Matt earns the ire of an ex-NRL player with a grudge and fists of stone. Then there’s Randy Devantier—Texan, sorcerer and all round badarse… er, badass. Dev’s looking for a rogue sorcerer, a stolen spell and a local guide. Between dodging rampaging footballers, a vampire with mood swings and a lonely PI making demands of his time, Matt also has to chauffer Dev around a town that might not be big enough for two badasses on a mission. And in the middle of it all, Matt has one, burning question. How do you stop a monkey from stealing grapes out of your cereal bowl? Good Words about the Night Call Series “…if all the novels are at least as fun, fast-paced and gripping as “Blood Work” the readers are exclusive beneficiaries of joyful readings.” -- Mihai Adascalitei, Dark Wolf Fantasy Reviews “Blood Work is an excellent read … A refreshing worldbuild, characters with interesting backstories, and a cracker of a plot, make Blood Work a must-add to your UF collection.” -- Tangled Bookmarks “LJ's Night Call series is spec-fic thriller, not boring same-same paranormal romance. … Demon Dei is a roller-coaster of intelligent excitement from start to finish.” -- Jenny Blackford, author, poet

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. "This town ain't big enough for the both of us..." By Amazon Customer After barely escaping being exsanguinated in a vampire turf war and managing to avoid becoming collateral damage in a conflict between two demons, things have settled down a little for Queenland’s number one (by default) supernatural gun-for-hire Matt Hawkins. He’s got a steady trickle of work to keep him – and his semi-tame vampire sidekick Mercy – occupied, and the Old World heavy hitters seem to be keeping their distance for the moment. Of course, with Matt’s luck being the way it is, this can only be the calm before another storm.Firstly a routine sting operation with local P.I. Erin McRea goes awry when the mark is killed in bizarre – and messy – circumstances, and then Mercy starts pushing against Matt’s authority leading to a frustrated Hawkins getting into an altercation with an ex-NRL player built like the side of a house. The last thing Matt needs is any more headaches, so he’s unimpressed to find himself playing tour guide for a Texan sorcerer, one Randy Devantier, who’s in town searching for a dangerous rogue magic-user and a stolen spell.Devantier is nursing injuries both physical and psychological, and his mistrust of Hawkins is reciprocated… with interest. They’ll have to find a way to work together, though, as the rogue sorcerer Devantier is hunting isn’t the type to come quietly and has plans for them both. Somehow they need to unravel a case involving magical murder, angry rugby players and flying monkeys, and without killing each other in the process. It’s going to be a long week…This is the third book in L.J. Hayward’s “Night Call” series and does a fine job of expanding the mythology of Hawkins’ world. We’ve been aware that there are organisations operating in the supernatural world that Matt is outside – and largely unaware – of, but they are certainly aware of him and there’s only so long they can put up with a loose cannon on deck. The introduction of Devantier gives us an insight into what’s going on outside Hawkins’ stamping ground and also how the Aussie vigilante is viewed by the “powers that be”. The friction between the two men allows for some fun dialogue and there’s a definite “this town ain’t big enough for the both of us” vibe which is exacerbated by them being forced to work together.Hayward’s magic system is well thought-out and it’s good to see the use of such power having real consequences for the user – no throwing the pyrotechnics around with reckless abandon for these guys. Every spell is a risk, and sorcerers aren’t known for living long, fulfilling lives. There’s not much to nit-pick here except for a few typos, and that’s nothing a quick spit and polish wouldn’t fix. Well worth a read and I look forward to finding out what fiendish creatures will find their way to Matt Hawkins’ door next…

By Amazon Customer Our minds,so far as we know, are the most complex things in the universe; and the best of them pose interesting questions. Feynman wondered: "Where does the weirdness go?" Poets also ponder such things; Louis MacNeice wrote:" World is crazier and more of it than we think, incorrigibly plural" If these ideas interest you- and they should- and you like SF (speculative fiction, that is) then this well written thriller is a book for you. Taking on important new ideas about the world it tells a gripping story with all the classic ingredients of a Good Read. SF has traditionally involved encounters with aliens, the future, and alternative communities. But "What If?" - the perennially important question- our present and apparent lives were not as we assume them to be?Mind Field has all the ingredients of a modern thriller and tells a story of intelligence and emotion confronted with professional power, corporate greed, corruption and fast -paced action. The central "What if?" question (No spoilers in this review) is well finessed. It makes an elegant link between hard science and poetry.I liked it. You may too.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Very Entertaining By BMWpilot Another chapter in the Alexis Carew series. I was eagerly waiting for this third book to be released, and I wasn't disappointed. I was a bit surprised to see that "Dunkirk in Space" would be used as part of the plot, but it worked out well. I'm interested in how the author treats the PTSD issue that our Lt Carew is starting to suffer from. So, now I have to settle down for the long wait for the sequel. As for the fact that these stories are similar to Age of Sail novels, it works. David Drake's Lt Leary series is also using similar space sailing tech and low tech crews. The thing is to roll with and enjoy the story.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Not your usual Sci-Fi, I have to say that I quite liked it! By Amazon Customer I was somewhat split on my opinion of the first book in this series, primarily due to its somewhat strange “science”. I was hesitant to read the second book due to the book blurb which seemed to focus on some woman hating (censored by Amazon). I liked the second book a lot more than I thought I would though and I liked this one quite a lot!Alexis is now a Lieutenant which I quite like since she now has some actual power to kick (censored by Amazon) and she is quite good at that. I guess this is one of those books that you either like or do not like. If you are into hard core science fiction then my guess is that you wont like this book. If you can look past the “science” and just look at the adventure part, well then it is a great book. This is really an old sailing ship era story, including pirates and all that kind of stuff, transformed into a space going era. It is quite well written. The characters are wonderful and it is a nice adventure filled with various kinds of action both in space and on the ground. Unfortunately the core of the story is a somewhat sad one where Alexis is taking part in a pretty botched up attempt to invade a planet, currently, belonging to the bad guys of this book series. As far as the core of the story goes I would say that it plays on a few British stereotypes. The bad guys are the Germans, The French cannot be bothered to pull their weight, apart from some especially heroic characters, and the British are the good guys (mostly). Well, it is a nice change from all the books where certain parties originating from the Middle East are the baddies at least. The book is filled with anachronisms. Sailing ships in space, old fashioned habits, battling with broadsides from manually loaded and fired guns, gun ports, flogging as a punishment, etc. etc. It takes a bit of getting used even though there this book provides some explanation as to thy things are as they are to but now once I have gotten used to it I do like it. I did read a few of my fathers old sailing adventure books as a kid and this is really a mixture of those and the sci-fi stories that I like.I have to say that I am a wee bit miffed about the ending though. Come on, Alexis pretty much saved the day including a heck of a lot of lives. The way she is treated at the end gives me very mixed feelings. I guess that the outcome was not too bad but it still stinks way to much of bureaucratic nonsense and pencil pushing. I especially grew a disliking for this psycho analyst or whatever that was evaluating Alexis after the main events. But then maybe that is the reaction that the author wanted.Well, at least she got a command and I am definitely very keen on knowing where the story goes from there. I am quite sure that the backwater command, being “away from the front lines”, is not going to be what her superiors think. At least I hope it wont be. Looking forward to the next instalment in the series…

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Well-written nautical science-fiction. By Unicycle guy J A Sutherland continues his excellent "Alex Carew" books with another well written gem, the third in the series. Sutherland has imagined a world were space ships "sail" on solar winds through darkspace. Moving through darkspace allows ships to traverse interplanetary distances in weeks or months but plays havoc with their electronic systems. This results in much of the equipment needing to be man-handled, as was done in the age of sail, back in the 1800s. What you end up with is essentially Hornblower meets sci-fi. Once you accept this premise, the books make for very engaging fiction.I recommend starting with the first book, "Into the Dark", which is an uplifting coming of age story, following Alex as she joins the Navy and attempts to find her place as a midshipman. The sequel "Mutineer" is darker but still a riveting read, examining the consequences of being under the command of a petty tyrant. "The Little Ships" finds Alex older and a little wiser but still with much to learn, particular in regards to history, politics and actions on a larger scale. The characters are very well written and Alex grapples with some of the more complex psychological issues resulting from command. As with the first two books the naval engagements draw heavily on 1800s nautical action (a familiarity with that period would be helpful in understanding some of the finer points). Also as with the last book, a core part of the plot is based on an historical event, which I felt makes the story even more interesting. At the conclusion of the novel the author provides some interesting commentary on which aspects were based on fact rather than fiction.

It was but two hours after midnight, yet many were wakeful in Cæsarea on the Syrian coast. Herod Agrippa, King of all Palestine—by grace of the Romans—now at the very apex of his power, celebrated a festival in honour of the Emperor Claudius, to which had flocked all the mightiest in the land and tens of thousands of the people. The city was full of them, their camps were set upon the sea-beach and for miles around; there was no room at the inns or in the private houses, where guests slept upon the roofs, the couches, the floors, and in the gardens. The great town hummed like a hive of bees disturbed after sunset, and though the louder sounds of revelling had died away, parties of feasters, many of them still crowned with fading roses, passed along the streets shouting and singing to their lodgings. As they went, they discussed—those of them who were sufficiently sober—the incidents of that day's games in the great circus, and offered or accepted odds upon the more exciting events of the morrow.

Rider Haggard novels, and my library had a 1903 (!) edition of this book. Geez, it is AWESOME! I love early Christianity books like _Ben Hur_ and _Quo Vadis_; this book is up in their league. That having been said, _Pearl Maiden_ spends very little time trying to assure the reader that Christianity is the best way, the only way, and that every other culture and faith that has come before it is misguided at best and infernal at worst. That's one of the things I really admire about Haggard, the more so as I read more of his books: for a man of his time, he is remarkably open-minded.So, what's the book about? The twisting, turning plot follows the adventures of Miriam (the "Pearl Maiden" of the book's title), an orphan whose Christian mother puts the baby into the care of a loyal servant woman. Miriam grows up in an adoring colony of Essenes, who educate her and teach her a trade (sculpting) but who, because of the dictates of their order, must send her forth into the world. She goes to live with her grandfather, a powerful Jewish merchant who hates the Roman rule and takes part in the defense of Jerusalem from Titus' forces.Miriam, whose grandfather has allowed her to retain her Christian faith, finds herself in a conflict, for she has fallen in love with Marcus, a Roman officer. To further complicate the plot, she has been raised with Caleb, a young Jewish boy, who loves her and no other.Well, I won't divulge any more of the the plot; you will want to savour it for yourself. It's a nice, fat book (my edition is over 500 pages), that will satisfy anyone who enjoys an action-packed historical yarn. I was up until one this morning finishing it off.

22 of 26 people found the following review helpful. This version is botched. By Spin360 How can some one edit, revise, change dialogue, names and scenes and claim it is still the original? Kou readily admits to this atrocities in regards to Haggard's work. Haggard wrote brilliantly and Kou has completely mutilated Haggard's story. What Kou has done is equivalent to rewriting Shakespeare's Othello as a Dick & Jane Bible Primer and claiming it is as Shakespeare's original work.Find an unedited original and avoid this edition.

8 of 9 people found the following review helpful. Vandalism By Susannah I read many of H. Rider Haggard's books as a child; I adored them, and they imprinted themselves indelibly upon my tastes in reading material. The fact that I read them beginning at the age of nine should make it clear that they are not hopelessly difficult and in need of revision and dumbing down for an uneducated public. Any adult of normal intelligence should have no difficulty at all in reading, understanding and enjoying these books. If you come across an occasional word or reference that you don't know, that's what dictionaries and encyclopedias are for.The hatchet job that's been done on this book is unforgivable. It disgusts me to think that people will read this and never know what they've missed. The "editor" doesn't deserve the name. If bad and unnecessary editing were a crime, this clown would go to the electric chair. In case you can't tell yet, I think Christopher D. Kou and Christian Liberty Press are nothing more than vandals. And if you haven't noticed, I'm angry, and so I offer the lyrics to the Star Spangled Banner, as written, followed by a guess at how Kou and Company would render them:Oh, say, can you see, by the dawn's early light,What so proudly we hail'd at the twilight's last gleaming?Whose broad stripes and bright stars, thro' the perilous fight,O'er the ramparts we watch'd, were so gallantly streaming? And the rockets' red glare, the bombs bursting in air,Gave proof thro' the night that our flag was still there.O say, does that star-spangled banner yet waveO'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?Edited and "Improved" for Modern Usage a la Kou and Christian Liberty Press:Hey, did you notice it wasn't night any more? And did you look at the flag like before you went to bed?Stripes and stuff?People were fighting but we watched it from the top of a hill or wall or somethingIt was red from bombs so we could kind of see anywayI wonder if it's still around. The End.There now. Wasn't that ever so much better?

Dive into the secret, ancient, powerful world of two New Orleans families, the Deschanels and the Sullivans… From USA Today bestselling paranormal author Sarah M. Cradit comes Myths of Midwinter, Volume 6 in the bestselling witches family saga, The House of Crimson & Clover. Not a standalone story, Midwinter's plot makes the most sense only after having the prior volumes. Quillan Sullivan lost his twin brother two decades ago, a tragedy he never fully experienced due to his unusual ability to see and talk to Riley when no one else can. He believes this "gift" is a fluke, until the haughty, vainglorious love of his life, Estella, returns after several years abroad, and rips his world apart. Estella Broussard loathes Quillan. He's the last person on Earth she'd ever bless with her presence. To her great dismay, he alone holds the key to achieving her deepest desire. She will do anything to reach her aims, no matter the warnings... no matter the cost to Quillan. Nerys guides Finn and Aleksandr on their mission to find Anasofiya and bring her home. Finn accepts her help, on the condition she keep no secrets. She relays what she knows... all except the visions her old companion has sent her, regarding a terrifying menace to the Deschanels back home: A necromancer has emerged, and this ominous knowledge has fallen into the wrong hands. The threads of fate weave the Deschanels and Sullivans down perilous paths, as a centuries-old warning emerges: Seduction to sinners. A legacy in splinters. Beware, the myths of midwinter. This one felt more like a bridge though. It was a complete novel, yet didn't complete the story. I can't wait for the next book to be released. Cradit has a way of using various viewpoints from chapter to chapter that brings parallel stories together - many authors who write in this style have books that feel disjointed, but Cradit creates separate storylines that overlap. While this is certainly not a standalone story, it is definitely another "chapter" in the continuing saga. What will happen next?I was given an ARC - this review is my honest and fair review and entirely my own.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Next please! By Stephenee * I received an ebook in exchange for an honest review. *I have read each and every one of author Sarah M. Cradit's Crimson & Clover books and novella's and with each one I fall in love with the Sullivan's, Deschanel's and even the Broussard's a tiny bit more. This story surely didn't disappoint in any way! Each book becomes more pulse stopping, more drama filled and intensely more intricate in the inter-weavings of the families. These books would be best read in order so that you are up to date on the current happenings in all of the key player's lives. (see the end of the review for the list)With that out of the way - I am still on the edge of my seat wondering if Anasofia and Finn will re-unite, if Oz will move on, if Jonathan will find happiness, if Nic is able to move on with Mercy, what will happen?!?! After spending so much time with these characters they literally become a part of you and your life! You feel a compelling need to know what has happened to them and what may still come next! The author weaves a tale filled with mystery that leaves the reader breathless as they frantically turn the pages to see what may happen next! I know that each book brings another mystery to light and I hope that the books never stop, as these characters are a part of my life! The quote that the author uses: “Remember the warning, with the fervor of faith:Seduction to sinner. A legacy in splinters. Beware the myths of midwinter” - is something that the reader will understand as they read and unravel some of the forces at work behind the curse! This book will give us more insight into the life of Quillan Sullivan and his unrequited love Estella. We get to see how love can truly cloud the mind and how it feels to be hurt by the ones we love. I really enjoyed getting to know Quillan and he has moved up on my list of favorites! I also enjoyed reading about Jon and hope that this is the Jon that continues to come out in the next books! One thing is for certain, Author Sarah M. Cradit has more than a few surprises up her sleeves! Make sure you start at the beginning of the series and you won't ever want to stop reading these amazing books! They will have you laughing, crying, yelling and screaming for more! 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Well Written, Complex and Utterly Absorbing! By julie whiteley Myths of Midwinter by Sarah M. Cradit is a 2015 publication. I was provided a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.“Remember the warning, with the fervor of faith:Seduction to sinner. A legacy in splinters. Beware the myths of midwinter”By now those who follow my reviews are well aware of my gushing effusiveness over this series. I can honestly say I've never come across a such a unique blend of paranormal, occult, and fantasy, mixed with all manner of family drama and suspense. This series is one that may leave a character hanging in the balance, but doesn't necessarily have to pick up where it left off in the next book, which under ordinary circumstances might leave readers feeling frustrated , but fans of HOC&C know to be patient and that good things come to those that wait…While Ana's fate is still in question, Finn is hard at work finding a way to save his wife. In the meantime he learns more about his own gifts and how he can use those gifts to reunite himself with Ana and for the sake of his son and the prophesy. But, the main story here doesn't center on that particular situation as much as it does on some characters we've met briefly in previous installments. This was a wicked story, full of white knuckle suspense, some morally bankrupt characters, with a very heavy, dark, atmosphere that gave me the shivers a time or two. This book is definitely intended for those who have kept up the series up to this point, so it's safe to say, that all that occurs here is part of a bigger picture. I can't wait to see what happens next, which is the beauty of this series. It's always fresh, always rich in details and atmosphere, sharp dialogue, and pushes the reader toward vivid imagery and challenges our perceptions. As always this story is well written, complex, and utterly absorbing.4.5 stars

4 of 5 people found the following review helpful. It's a plot of bad writing. By Kindle Customer I finished this book, but it was like pulling teeth. I usually give an author the benefit of the doubt. Giving credit that the person has actually had the fortitude to finish the work. I'm hoping that this author just ran out of money and couldn't afford to have this book proofed or edited, but Good Lord, I found my self not only decrying the poor grammar, but also the stilted style of the writing. There was lots of telling and very little showing, the characters for the most part were like stick figures and I just couldn't care for them very much. The premise was promising, but the execution was shallow. If this was a start of a series I hope the follow up book is at least edited better. At least learn the difference between "there. their, and they're" and "your, and you're" please. One or two instances of the misuse of these words is almost expected, but it was consistent throughout the book. It's like he ran spellcheck for the edit.

This is a very good depiction of what to expect in the coming years By Amazon Customer I've been studying The New World Order, Agenda 21 and every atrocious thing The United Nations, The Mason's, The World Banking system, The League of Nations and The Commuinst Party has been doing. This is a very good depiction of what to expect in the coming years. Edward A. Bowman Jr. Chairman of The Colbert County Rainy Patriots Tea Party.

Spinoza's heritage has been occluded by his incorporation into the single, western, philosophical canon formed and enforced by theologico-political condemnation, and his heritage is further occluded by controversies whose secular garb shields their religious origins. By situating Spinoza's thought in a materialist Aristotelian tradition, this book sheds new light on those who inherit Spinoza's thought and its consequences materially and historically rather than metaphysically. By focusing on Marx, Benjamin, and Adorno, Idit Dobbs-Weinstein explores the manner in which Spinoza's radical critique of religion shapes materialist critiques of the philosophy of history. Dobbs-Weinstein argues that two radically opposed notions of temporality and history are at stake for these thinkers, an onto-theological future-oriented one, and a political one oriented to the past for the sake of the present or, more precisely, for the sake of actively resisting the persistent barbarism at the heart of culture.

Spinoza's Critique of Religion and its Heirs: Marx, Benjamin, Adorno, by Idit Dobbs-Weinstein

Review "For Idit Dobbs-Weinstein, Spinoza is neither the secular liberal he is for Jonathan Israel and Steven Nadler, nor the anatomist of power he is for Antonio Negri and Michael Hardt. He is, rather, the first critical theorist. In support of this interpretation, she places Spinoza in a materialist tradition that privileges praxis over theoria. This tradition includes Aristotle, Averroes and Maimonides on the one hand, and Marx, Benjamin and Adorno on the other. At its centre is Spinoza's critique of religion, the political significance of which lies, for Dobbs-Weinstein, in the resistance to all forms of teleology rather than in the establishment of a public sphere." Andrew Cutrofello, Loyola University Chicago"This signal intervention demonstrates Spinoza's profound significance for Marx, Benjamin and Adorno. In a striking tour-de-force, Dobbs-Weinstein shows how many of the critical motives in Marx, Benjamin and Adorno gain their full thrust when seen in the context of the seminal role Spinoza plays in Marx and how the engaged and intense discussions between Benjamin and Adorno bear out the critical force of this legacy. Dobbs-Weinstein's book is an engagingly argued study that highlights the deep and hidden but decisive presence of Spinoza's thought in critical theory." Willi Goetschel, University of Toronto

About the Author Idit Dobbs-Weinstein is Associate Professor of Philosophy and Jewish Studies at Vanderbilt University, Tennessee. She is the author of Maimonides and St Thomas on the Limits of Reason and coeditor of Maimonides and his Heritage (with Lenn E. Goodman and James A. Grady). Her work has appeared in such journals as Epoché and Idealistic Studies.

2 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Not to be summed up... By Scott Carden This is an extraordinary book. If you are committed to secularism but frustrated by its contemporary impotence, theoretical and otherwise, reading this might point you in the direction of occluded sources capable of modeling a secular political philosophy still capable of a little something. It is a rare example among scholars who write about these thinkers of one who also practices what they taught: to look to singular things and avoid abstractions. Because of this, it will leave you with more questions than answers, which is perhaps as it should be.

Can't wait for the next book, I give it 5 stars!"Grandma Peachy says, "I enjoyed the book and recommend it to readers who enjoy paranormal or crime novels. I give it a five star rating for the excellent writing plus good character and plot development." Beta reader Gary Seaton says of Markie Madden: "You are going to be the next J.D. Robb!" Author Sharon K. Miller comments: "I would never have read in this genre if you hadn't given me the opportunity! Fantastic, you really pulled it off."

From the Author The concept for The Undead Unit series and this book (actually the concepts for the first 4 books!) came to me in that twilight moment just before sleep. Since I was treated with chemotherapy a couple years ago, my memory hasn't been the best and I'd taken to keeping Post-It notes on my bedside table. And the coffee table. And in the bathroom (well, that's an exaggeration but you get the idea)! So I jotted down notes for this series using the light from my cell phone (I didn't want to wake the husband).Fang and Claw was extremely fun to write! There were times when the characters just took over and I could pound out 5,000 words a day or more! And I really enjoyed watching the characters and their relationships begin to evolve. I hope you'll enjoy the story and come back for more. Book Two of the series is called Souls of the Reaper and I'll be hard at work on that one very soon!

Vampires, werewolves, shifters, zombies, and other supernatural beings have revealed themselves and integrated into human society. Two of those beings, Lacey, a vampire, and Colton, a werewolf, are police officers in the Dallas, TX Police Department's Major Crimes Unit. The powers that be decide they need a unit dedicated to crimes committed by supernatural beings, but they don't take into account the cultural differences between the types of supernatural beings when they appoint Lacey as the lieutenant of the new unit with Colton as her second in command. The two officers are left struggling to work together professionally when neither trusts the other. Unfortunately for them, there's also a new criminal in town who is committing crimes that are right up their alley. Can these two good cops overcome their differences to save innocent lives? You'll have to read to find out! :-)I really enjoyed this book. It was fast-paced and well-researched and the characters were interesting. I especially enjoyed how the author demonstrated how easily even innocuous actions can be misinterpreted as malicious when we refuse to look at things from another person's point of view. The world Ms. Madden created was also really interesting, and I think the advances she imagined are well within the realm of possibility given the time frame. All-in-all, this was a really fun read and I'm looking forward to the next book in the series. :-)

Imagine a vampire detective and a werewolf detective working together to solve crimes. Intrigued? Well, that’s what you’ll get with the first book in Markie Madden’s The Undead Unit series, Fang and Claw. What I LikedLacey Anderson: She’s the vampire in the detective partnership, and she is one tough cookie. She battles serious trust issues since only she survived a massacre of her coven, a fact that has driven her to reclusiveness. However, she is one of the best detectives on the Dallas Police force and she demands respect from her coworkers.Colton Scarber: He’s Lacey’s partner and a werewolf. He’s a huge family guy, and the scenes where he’s with his family are my favorites. The mystery: This is a case of “who dunnit?” There are several twists and turns, and they kept me on the edge of my seat. The supernatural beings: In this novel’s world, supernatural beings are simply another race in the United States. They interact like humans, with humans. What I Didn’t Like I couldn’t read this book at night. It is so well-written and entertaining that it literally invaded my dreams. I dreamed that situations happening to the characters were happening to me! I wanted to read it at night, but knew I better not if I desired peaceful sleep. It was frustrating because I didn’t want to put down the book! If you are a fan of detective mysteries, vampire/werewolf lore, or you simply want a different, well-written work of literature, then I highly recommended Fang and Claw. You will not be disappointed.

The writing is excellent and I look forward to more from this author By Barbara Chioffi Colton and Lacey, one a wolf shifter, the other a vampire, begin their relationship as elite members of the newly created Undead Unit for a Texas police department. The search for a killer who leaves no trail leads to frustration and intrigue as the two become accustomed to each other. That journey is filled with bumps and potholes, and as you read, you experience the emotions that both are feeling. Colton and Lacey have intertwined pasts that threaten to destroy the working relationship. Will they be able to find the killer or will they abandon the partnership before their task is completed?I found the details of this story mesmerizing. Experiencing the emotions of both characters draws you into their developing relationship, not to mention the fascinating details of police work...DNA evidence, filed reports, and hours of leg work that it takes to gather information.Everything about this book will hold your attention. You are there with Colton and Lacey as they try to fit the pieces of the puzzle together. The writing is excellent and I look forward to more from this author. Well done, Ms. Madden. 5 stars

A poor devil's unsuccessful encounters with the facts of life By Phutatorius The title of this review is taken from Bernard Shaw's preface to "Major Barbara." Writing in 1906 Shaw was pleased to see that Lever's serialized novel was back in print after fifty or so years, but he only claimed only to have read scraps of it back when he was a child, but that it had left a lasting impression. Here's Shaw again: "The hero was a very romantic hero, trying to live bravely, chivalrously, and powerfully by dint of mere romance-fed imagination, without courage, without means, without knowledge, without skill, without anything real except his bodily appetites." Shaw's recomendation led me, fifteen or twenty years ago, to locate an ancient, disintegrating copy of the novel and to attempt to read it. I got about halfway through before I gave up. It is just that painful to see someone botching every opportunity that comes his way. In that respect I'd compare it to Thackeray's "Barry Lyndon," at least Kubrick's movie version of Thackeray's novel. Well, I'm happy to see that "A Day's Ride: a life's Romance" is back in print again nearly one hundred years after Shaw gave it its best advertisement. Even though I only made it halfway through many years ago, it made a lasting impression. Perhaps you too would like to give it a try.
