In this first-of-its-kind strategy guide for current high school students and anyone else who plans to attend a public university, students get the know-how they need to tackle college the smart way—before they even set foot on campus. With the ratio of students to academic advisors at public universities averaging around 300:1, new college students can’t expect much help on campus with academic planning. It’s critical for them to arrive for their first semester with the know-how they need to navigate college successfully on their own. But they usually don’t. Numerous resources exist to help students gain admission to college, but managing the transition from high school to college is a different story. Until now, it’s been largely up to students to figure out the rules of college academics through trial and error after college begins. As a result, many students make serious mistakes in their academic decisions that hurt their GPAs, prevent them from graduating on time, increase college costs, and limit their opportunities during and after college. Acing the Public University tackles head-on the crisis of inadequate academic advising for students at public colleges. It shows public-university-bound students in a do-it-yourself, paint-by-numbers manner how to be their own academic advisors. First, students get the background knowledge they need to navigate college academics successfully by themselves. They learn the ins and outs of college-level grading, degree plans, fulfilling degree requirements, “professor shopping,” and much more. The book then sets out step-by-step, easy-to-follow strategies that students can use on their own to develop a custom-tailored college completion game plan and select courses. In the course of Acing the Public University's 250+ pages, students get the tools they need to make smart academic planning decisions on their own. After acting on what they learn in the book, they can start college with a game plan and on track to: • Maximize their GPAs • Graduate on time • Complete college more cost-effectively • Use college as the springboard to the future they want With more than half of all college graduates under 25 jobless or underemployed, and with education costs at record highs, it’s more important than ever to do college right. Use Acing the Public University to get the edge for success in college … and beyond!

A stunningly comprehensive manual designed to help public university students maximize their GPAs and their college experiences.
Most college instructional guides focus on application strategies but provide little advice on how to excel at a college once admitted. Gimpel’s first book provides meticulous advice for succeeding academically at a public university. The problem for the average student is essentially twofold: in an increasingly competitive economy, grades have become an object of scrutiny for prospective employers. Also, tuitions have never been higher, saddling students with piles of debt in exchange for a potentially unmarketable degree. The author provides a detail-rich blueprint for both scoring high grades and completing a degree as quickly as possible, diminishing costs. As far as the speedy completion of a degree is concerned (the author finished a four-year degree in three years), the key is to test out of college courses (“credit by examination”), which allows a student to complete requirements more cheaply and quickly. Using transfer courses can accomplish this as well while simultaneously boosting one’s overall GPA. Much of the guide focuses on getting better grades, which involves carefully applied strategies for appraising and picking both professors and courses. Besides demystifying the sometimes-nebulous nature of college grades, Gimpel also makes a compelling case for their postgraduate significance, especially in a chapter entitled “Your College GPA and the Big Picture.” He also furnishes a sobering lesson on the real costs of a college education and the shocking surcharge attached to graduating late. Sometimes, the advice can be unyieldingly practical, emphasizing grades over education and personal development. The section devoted to “professor shopping” surely contains helpful tips, but it neglects to acknowledge the value of learning from a notoriously difficult instructor and succeeding (or even not) and the possibility of mentorship. Nonetheless, this is a savvy tour of the college experience that rightly makes the case that a disciplined, goal-oriented plan for university may benefit the student more than a more meandering approach.
A useful handbook, especially for those who view college primarily as a conduit to a future career.

An essential guide for thriving at a public university By Cole I rarely leave reviews on Amazon or Yelp or the likes, but I feel I’ve stumbled on a real gem here and wanted to share. My daughter is a junior in high school and as she gets closer to college, increasing tuition headlines have certainly caught my attention. Bookshelves are saturated with tons of books on getting into college and maneuvering the fiercely competitive financial aid world, but until now, nothing really guiding students on how to actually thrive in college. After reading Acing the Public University, I now feel like I am armed with a real game plan to not only help my daughter tackle college smartly, but cost efficiently as well. The underlying mantra is simple – graduate on time (or ahead of time) with a rich college experience and the highest possible GPA. What more could a parent (or student) ask for?The author provides strategies and philosophies that once you read, you’re like “of course ... that’s brilliant … why didn’t I think of that?” Three chapters that come to mind:Dissecting Degree Plans explains the different parts of a degree plan and pitfalls to avoid that can derail students from graduating on time. An interesting analogy is presented. Think of your degree plan as a contract with the University. Deviate from the contract and there are consequences.Finding Your Inner Student focuses on the student recognizing which format of class presentation and grading style they do well in and do poorly in … which all ties directly into Professor Shopping.Professor Shopping provides a tips and tricks tutorial for finding out how particular professors approach teaching their courses and how they grade. By knowing “your inner student”, you can then make more strategic decisions in picking classes that you might do better in ... thus raising the GPA.I’m really happy I found this book. The author brought so many things I never thought about to my foreground. I didn’t know that less than a third of students graduate in 4 years or that half of all college students take 5 years. That’s an extra year of tuition the vast majority is shelling out. Acing the Public University has completely changed my game plan for my daughter’s college education. It’s a great book for both parents and student to read. I will certainly be asking my daughter to read it as the book is filled with smart ideas that will serve her well not only in college but in all areas of life.

By Boris I bought the book for my nephews upon the suggestion of an academic advisor and I loved it: A) It is practical, concise and to the point; B) I like the idea of maximizing your GPA at a (relatively) affordable 4-year public university, which, I believe, may get you a leg up when applying for a job on Wall Street or in Management Consulting (i.e. every decimal above a 3.0 GPA may be worth thousands of dollars in future earnings); C) The author seems credible: He successfully tested his recommended methods during his college years (I started with the bio first and switched to the introduction.)I had never heard about books highlighting GPA-maximizing strategies. I found many books about how to ace the SAT but, to my knowledge, nobody asks for an SAT score on a job application.

I’m very glad that I did so By Michael Bauer I ordered Acing the Public University after reading the glowing 5-Star review of the book by the San Francisco Book Review. Having now read it, I’m very glad that I did so. I will be working closely with my daughter to make sure she heads off for her first semester of college with a college completion game plan in hand, thanks to this book. It’s no secret that most of us parents are focused on getting our kids admitted into a college. There are hundreds of books which we can choose from to help us with the college admissions process. There are, however, precious few books that help students with the next step once they get admitted to a college: successfully transitioning from high school to college. To the best of my knowledge, there are none designed with students in mind who will be attending a state university. Until this book, that is!Given that state support for state universities has declined by more than 25 percent over the last three decades, students today cannot assume that they will get quality academic advising on campus. On most state school campuses, there are hundreds of students for each academic advisor. As a result, students need to make sure they arrive for their first semester able to be their own academic advisors and make well-informed and strategic academic planning decisions independently. As parents, we therefore owe it to our children to ensure that they have this ability before they head off to college. Fortunately, Acing the Public University gives students the tools and acumen that they need to advise themselves and make strategic academic planning decisions on their own. It shows students in an easy to read and systemic fashion how to develop a comprehensive college completion plan. It lays out exactly how students need to go about doing this (Step 1, Step 2, etc.). It provides, in short, a blueprint for college success. If you expect your son or daughter will be attending a state university after high school, this book can help you help your child. A great investment in your child’s future!
