14 year old Katie Sullivan has vanished from modern day Atlanta and appears in 1197 A.D. Europe. Captured and taken as slave Katie makes a desperate wager with the king: If she can teach him how to fly, she won't only go free - she'll be rich! But if she fails she will die. As a valued but distrusted advisor she counsels the monarchy on famine, bandits raiding the villages, emergency first aid, Black Plague, saves a woman from burning at the stake, and much more. Could you convince a king in 1197 A.D. that you're worth more as an advisor than as a slave?

I find the story line to be creative, suspenseful and full of twists. He does a clever job merging the two years of 1197 and 2015 together, using the wit and sharpness of lead character Katie Sullivan, who has been thrown back in time but still holds all of the knowledge she learned in the future. Being that she is only 14, it is amazing how the author portrays the use of her knowledge. You would think teenagers with their "I don't care attitude" and who have a hard time paying attention, can actually remember things that they have learned in their lifetime and apply that knowledge in pressured situations. We watch Katie Sullivan transform from a fear stricken teenager in a foreign land to someone who has the quality, nobility, humility and bravery of a Queen. This was a fast read for me as I could not put the book down and finished it in a few days time. I look forward to reading the future books in the series.

I finished the whole thing in just over a day. There are two issues that weren't really addressed in Book 1: first the heroine is 14, but has the knowledge of someone much older. Secondly, there is a complete lack of regard to how her changing history might impact anything. Nonetheless, I loved this story, and highly recommend it!
