1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Inspiration for the Hornblower series By Gregory Chalik This is not a fictional "boys own adventure" described by another online reviewer. So far as I have checked all the historical individuals, events and ships or vessels mentioned in the book did exist, and did happen as described. The naval descriptions are highly technical, and in a language of the period, so bring a dictionary if you are not VERY familiar with the structure of the square rigged warships, and the language used by their ship's companies. It seems to me, based on 25 years of military history research, that descriptions of Midshipman Ralph Chester's "adventures" are actually the sort of events that were expected to occur as part of a naval officers duty and service at that time in the RN history, and are NOT fictitious. The language used is very early 19th century, so the writer, who lived in the second half of the 19th century, was very familiar with the pre-Victorian style of English, which to me suggests he was conversant with someone from the period, and that perhaps this book is intended to be biographical, perhaps of his father who served in the RN during the period.A Lieutenant Robert Daniel Lancaster was mentioned for a gallant fight with an American privateer and being taken prisoner in 1814, though perhaps a relative rather than the author's father since the events in the book describe a midshipman in 1794.Anyone who loves naval history of the Napoleonic period would hugely enjoy this book, and I was compelled to write this review while still only half way through it!
