Across the ineffable expanse of the Great Deep float billions of shattered universes: the Shards. Populated with vengeful demons and tormented humans, the Shards need Earth to survive just as plants need water. Earth itself is kept alive by 36 righteous people, 36 hidden saints known as the Lamed Vav. Kill but a few of the Lamed Vav and the Earth will shatter, and all the Shards that rely upon it will die in a horrible cataclysm. When Daniel Fisher is abducted on his wedding day by the demon king, Ashmedai, he learns he is a Lamed Vav, one of the hidden righteous upholding the world. The demon Mashit has usurped the throne of demonkind from Ashmedai and has been systematically murdering the Lamed Vav. On a desert-covered Shard teeming with strange creatures, pursued by a fearsome demon army, Daniel and Ashmedai, saint and demon, must join forces to stop Mashit before she destroys all of existence. Daniel's survival means he must ally with evil Ashmedai. Yet who but a saint—a Lamed Vav—can save the world?

Review "Kressel draws heavily on Hebrew legend and biblical lore to build a robustly imagined fantasy world modeled on Gehenna . . . His skill at extrapolating traditional religious lore into the stuff of fantasy bodes well for future books in the series."—Publishers' Weekly"A unique fantasy cosmos."—Huffington Post"In every way a classic fantasy . . . with surprising twists and a deep and detailed universe."—Barnes & Noble Sci-Fi & Fantasy blog"The metaphysics of King of Shards are vast and staggeringly complex, a feast for hardcore fantasy fans.'—NPR"A surreal and exotic adventure in a unique mythological setting. Scary, exhilarating fun!"— N.K. Jemisin, award-winning author of The Inheritance Trilogy, the Dreamblood series, and The Fifth Season"A gripping trek across a unique desert world rich with Kabbalah-inspired magic and vivid demons builds to a whirlwind climax. Daniel, taken from our world, and Rana, uprooted from her life on hers, grapple with the power of their destinies, and its danger, to both our world and the entire cosmos."— Scott H. Andrews, World Fantasy Award-nominated editor of Beneath Ceaseless Skies Magazine"This is a world where the mysticism of The Kabbalah and Torah begin to seem like everyday commentary, where ordinary people attempt to live their lives despite the extraordinary turmoil of unending conspiracy, secret saints, scheming demons, and shattered universes. This novel shakes the foundations of everyday reality, and the ensuing chaos is pure pleasure."— Christopher Barzak, author of One for Sorrow and Wonders of the Invisible World"Matthew Kressel's King of Shards is an imaginative, intelligent, and soaring debut that mixes Jewish folklore/mysticism and modern-day social politics. The result is a unique spin on epic fantasy that is both timeless and timely, and a hell of lot of fun. You'll want to follow Daniel and Rana through the Shards. Trust me."— Paul Tremblay, author of A Head Full of Ghosts and The Little Sleep"With King of Shards, Kressel threads portal adventure through ancient mythos. His demons and demi-gods and his very human (or mostly human) characters have to work their way through the terrifying, violent, and often beautiful alternate planes he's built using his incredible imagination and traditional and Apocryphal knowledge as a tableau. You will emerge transformed."— Fran Wilde, author of Updraft"Kressel's rich landscapes sing with ancient resonance by the light of modern flair. He weaves compelling tradition with innovative high Fantasy; culture and creativity become foundations for new myths featuring heroes built to shine."— Leanna Renee Hieber, award-winning author of the Strangely Beautiful saga

Non-stop adventure and discovery By Jody L Rose _The King of Shards_ by Matthew Kressel is a delightful fantasy adventure in the same vein as The Tales of the Arabian Nights -- with a bit of Edgar Rice Burroughs and Clifford D. Simack thrown in for good measure -- incorporating ancient Sumerian, Babylonian, Assyrian, Vedic, and Hebrew mythologies, and creates what is, at the heart of this novel, a coming of age story. That the protagonist, Daniel Fisher, is a young man in his mid-twenties does in no way disqualify the novel as Bildungsroman; one need not be a twelve year old boy or girl to undergo a rite of passage. Rites of passage are extant throughout one's lifespan or developmental stages, from infancy to old age: Matthew Kressel's _The King of Shards_ is exemplar.Daniel Fisher is abducted on his wedding day by the demon king Ashmedai and carried to another dimension far removed from modern day Earth. In fact, this other dimension is not even on Earth, but on another world altogether different, a populated "shard" or remnant from when the universe was first formed and then shattered into many pieces, shards which float, as it were, within the Great Deep or black void of endless space, all the while tethered to and dependent upon the Earth and her bounty to sustain them. Hidden on Earth are thirty-six saints who are pillars of the universe holding up the Earth and all the disparate shards. Theses saints are the Hidden Ones called the Lamed Vav, who, like the electromagnetic force within an atom, keep the floating shards from flying apart into the Great Deep and taking the Earth with them.Ashmedai believes Daniel Fisher is one of the Lamed Vav, even though Daniel himself is clueless, not unlike the happy fool going about his business in the world. But happy fool could not be further from the truth, for Daniel can only find happiness through helping others in need, and does so by volunteering for and managing a shelter for the homeless in New York. Daniel's other source of joy is his bride, Rebecca, whose appearance is deceptive. Rebecca has other, more deadly plans for her intended, and pursues him into Gehinnom, the shard to which Ashmedai has conveyed and concealed Daniel from discovery. There, Ashmedai tells Daniel that Daniel is a Lamed Vav, and that the demon Queen Mashit is systematically killing the Lamed Vav so that she can ultimately destroy the Earth and all the shards. What ensues is wild adventure in a desert landscape where strange golem like creatures eat human flesh, shape changing demons appear out of nowhere, lusty witches cast lurid spells, giant birds speak, and music that has the power to create or destroy life, reside and struggle against adversarial conditions.Readers who enjoy studying the Twenty-Two Letters of Sacred Text will enjoy reading _The King of Shards_, as will anyone who enjoys a rousing epic fantasy. _The King of Shards_ is written in past tense omniscient point of view and is Matthew Kressel’s debut novel, Book One of The Worldmender Trilogy.

By David Crane Knowing Matt as a writer from the old days, I must say that this is one of his best and most ambitious literary projects up to date. A trilogy is a very hard thing to write, but Matt Kressel is not afraid of the challenge and does just that. The First Book of the "King Of Shards," introduces a mystical realm that feels both magical and very real. The number and diversity of characters may seem intimidating at first, but once you go deeper into the story, you learn how this unusual world works and what rules its inhabitants must follow in order to survive and win. In this fantasy tale of good versus evil, nothing is black and white, and the characters face tough choices as they confront incredible challenges from both sides of the spectrum. Action, suspense, magic and unique prose offers the reader an incredibly fresh fantastic voyage into author's imagination. Well done!David Crane author of Price of Life and Die To Live Again

Matthew Kressel's writing, which is replete with captivating imagery, takes you on an amazing ride through the shards of a different, mystical universe while thoughtfully intertwining pieces of the old testament and Kabbalah. I'm really looking forward to the next book in the trilogy.
