We are caught up in the cycle of so-called "holy wars" In The Jihad of Jesus, Dave Andrews argues that while this inter-communal conflict is endemic, it is not inevitable. Depending on our understanding, our religions can be either a source of escalating conflict or a resource for overcoming inter-communal conflict; and for our religions to be a resource for overcoming conflict, we need to understand the heart of all true religion as open-hearted compassionate spirituality. In the light of an open-hearted compassionate spirituality, we can reclaim the word "jihad" from extremists who have (mis)appropriated it as a call to "holy war" and reframe it, in truly Qur'anic terms, as a "sacred nonviolent struggle for justice" and we can reconsider Jesus, as he is in the Gospels, not as a poster boy for Christians fighting crusades against Muslims, but as "a strong-but-gentle Messianic figure" who can bring Christians and Muslims together. As this book shows, many Christians and Muslims have found Isa (Jesus) and the Bismillah (celebrating the mercy, grace, and compassion of God) as common ground upon which they can stand and work for the common good. The Jihad of Jesus is a handbook for reconciliation and action: a do-it-yourself guide for all Christians and Muslims who want to move beyond the "clash of civilizations" join the jihad of Jesus, and struggle for justice and peace nonviolently side by side.

Ideas I (have been) tentatively considering, he has already been living for years. I've seen the beautiful things he has been doing in a particularly challenging neighborhood. You'll see in Dave's writings that he is highly knowledgeable, not only from an academic standpoint, but also from a grass-roots, experiential level. His writing on these subjects grows from what he has done on the ground. He speaks to my soul in a way that nobody else does.''--Brian McLaren - Prominent Christian Pastor, Activist and Author of Why did Jesus, Moses, the Buddha, and Mohammed Cross the Road? ''Dave Andrews is a man whose life reflects consciousness of God. His personal piety, kindnesses to others and service to the needy are manifestations of Dave's God-consciousness. Dave's reflections demonstrate that Muslims and Christians have much to teach to and learn from each other in respect to navigating a path towards God and living according to God's will.''--Dr. Halim Rane - Associate Professor, Griffith University, and Deputy Director, Griffith Islamic Studies Research Unit (GIRU), Brisbane, Australia.''Dave Andrews speaks and writes as a committed Christian actively engaged in the lives of people of all faith traditions, especially those marginalized by dominant cultures. His book situates Christian-Muslim dialogue not in abstractions or dogma, but in the practical concerns of people seeking dignity, respect and fullness of life. I encourage all who are seeking to follow Jesus beyond the bounds of institutional ''Christianity'' to read and discuss this important book.''--Wes Howard-Brook, Seattle University, Author of ''Come Out, My People!'' - God's Call Out of Empire in the Bible and Beyond. --Wipf and Stock Publishers''Dave Andrews is already known for his positive work with both (Muslim and Christian) communities. Dave's concern undoubtedly stems from compassion, that which the Qur'an refers to when it declares: '… After those [messengers] We sent Jesus the son of Mary: We gave him the Gospel and put compassion and mercy into the hearts of his followers…' (57:27). There is no doubt in my heart that the best way of building bridges of understanding is through respectful dialogue. Meeting people and allowing for genuine and respectful engagement helps us to grow and nurture our humanness. Dave's approach will surely help us get closer to this noble end.''--Dr. Mohamad Abdalla - Associate Professor, Griffith University, Director, Griffith Islamic Research Unit (GIRU) and Director, Queensland node of the National Centre of Excellence for Islamic Studies (NCEIS), Australia.''Dave Andrews is that rare mix - rigorous intellect, passionate activist, theologian and artist, theorist and practitioner - committed to real life at the sharp end. The Jihad Of Jesus is an essential read for anyone curious about ''the central conflict of our times'' - about how two great Abrahamic faiths, rooted in traditions of justice, love and peace, have motivated such violence, wreaking havoc and destruction from ancient Crusades to 9/11, 7/7 and the War on Terror. Dave digs deep into the history, culture and tradition of Islam and Christianity and the implications of ''the struggle'' for both Christian and Muslim are explored in detail, from the global story, right in to your neighborhood. Dave works hard to rebalance distorted perspectives, rediscovering the rudiments of faith and bringing fresh insights (that) bring contrasting traditions and distinctive world-views together, to inspire peace and development. This book (is) highly recommended.''--Andy Turner - Community worker and Chair of Greenbelt - 'Creating Spaces Where Arts, Faith And Justice Collide' - UK.''I honestly believe (Dave) has the character that we should be embodying - (better than a majority of Muslims) - and I think that's why he has this affect on us (not being Christian). Surely refinement of character only comes with purifying one's understanding of religion. I've always been perceived by some as 'conservative', but throughout his reflections (on the Bismillah) I was in awe, because it was as if he was either reading my mind or taking the words off my tongue. May Allah grant him eternal happiness. Ameen.''--Riffat Gurdezi - Northside Da'wah Revival, Brisbane Australia. ''The Jihad of Jesus is an engaging book which tackles honestly and courageously some of the thorniest issues around religion and political violence. It translates scholarly works into fluent and moving language, provides a critical history of Christianity and Islam, and encourages a re-reading of the original intentions of these religious traditions which has the potential to inspire many to move away from violence in their moral and political struggles.''--Dr. Alexandre Christoyannopoulos - Lecturer in Politics and International Relations, Loughborough University, Leicestershire, UK.''This book pulls no punches. It explains clearly some of the difficult history of violence carried out in the name of Christianity and Islam throughout the centuries. It should be read by all those who want to dedicate themselves to the path of peace.''--Andrew Pratt - Advisor and Coordinator, Inter-faith Work, Blackburn Diocese, and Former Chief Superintendent, National Community Tension Team, UK. --Wipf and Stock Publishers''This is a greatly needed book. If Christians and Muslims could do more struggling together for mutual understanding and for genuine peace, the 'War against Terror' could actually be won. Dave's book is one of the very few books available today that promotes a solution right at the problematic root of the bitter fruit of terrorism and counter-terrorism. This book gives us insight into what types of blindness, ideology and cruelty underpin the clash between the self-righteous overpowering global dominance of the West, and deeply wounded Islamic piety. The West, and Western Christians, must face our own demons and renounce of our global imperialism and violence, and the Islamic world must likewise face the fact that aiding and abetting the one-eyed violent fanaticism of religious extremists simply keeps the cycle of horror going. The common resources for genuine peace are already there, in Christianity and Islam, in the non-violent struggle for justice of the Messiah or Masih - known as Jesus to Christians and Isa to Muslims. In The Jihad of Jesus, Dave Andrews points out how both faiths have entrenched histories of rejecting Jesus/Isa as an example of nonviolence whilst perpetrated horrifying violent atrocities in the name of God. Equally, both Christians and Muslims have astonishing exemplars of the kind of the radical, sacrificial, non-violent reconciliation modeled by Jesus/Isa. The Jihad of Jesus points us away from the ongoing cycle of violence perpetuated in order to gain some illusory 'total victory' over 'the other', and towards reconciliation, collaboration and transformation'.''--Dr. Paul Tyson, Hon. Assistant Professor, Theology and Religious Studies, University of Nottingham, UK, and Author of Returning To Reality.''Jihad is a much abused term but most Muslims know that the greater Jihad is not to use force but to use what Gandhi called 'Soul force' to resist temptation and evil. In The Jihad of Jesus, Dave Andrews gives us some important and tested observations on the sources of violence and both the reason and the means for resistance, and he does so by drawing on the wisdom of both Muslim and Christian scholarship and experience. Dave Andrews books come from the heart but also from open and hard-working hands: from his own experiments in compassionate resistance to the violence of this age. For purposeful interfaith engagement with the world as it is I very much recommend this book.'' --Dr. Keith Hebden - Editor of A Pinch Of Salt, Author of Seeking Justice, Pioneer Minister and 'Seeking Justice' Advisor, Mansfield, UK. ''The Jihad of Jesus is a manual for waging jihad. And make no mistake; Dave Andrews wants you to wage jihad. Not the violent jihad of extremists; but a 'strong yet gentle nonviolent struggle'. Dave's model for this is Jesus: the jihad of Jesus. Drawing on the teachings of both Christian and Muslim scholars and faith examples from both traditions he presents Jesus as the supreme example of jihad. This is challenging stuff. Dave does not shy away from the litany of horror perpetrated in religions name. But just as you want to turn away and scream 'enough!' Dave leads the reader towards a deeply compassionate and nonviolent reading of jihad, teachings which are found in the Qur'an as well as the Bible. This is a book that proceeds with that rare combination of care and urgency. With Jesus as his guide Dave argues that the meaning of jihad is to transform ourselves into living examples of love and to fight injustice with the tools of nonviolent action. This is the jihad that threatens tyrants and empires of all stripes. This is the jihad we need.''--Dr. Jason MacLeod - Religious Society of Friends, Academic Advisor for the International Center for Nonviolent Conflict, Washington DC, USA. --Wipf and Stock Publishers

Worth a read but ultimately unsatisfying By KahnaKuhl Full disclosure: I received a free e-book of The Jihad of Jesus through Mike Morrell's Speakeasy website on the understanding that I would provide a fair and even-handed review. So here goes...I admire what Dave Andrews is trying to do with this book - to bring Christians and Muslims together by identifying where their peacemaking traditions intersect. I admire even more that Andrews is more than a theoretician - as a radical Jesus-follower he actively engages with Muslim leaders and lives a simple and compassionate life in close contact with the urban poor and disadvantaged in Melbourne, Australia. But while this book is informative - I discovered a couple of new peacebuilding heroes while reading it, as well as finding out more about those I already admire - I found Andrews' contention that a life of faith (Muslim or Christian) based on a central theme of "Bismillah" or "the jihad of Isa" clever but too cerebral and in the end, unconvincing.Andrews' account of the histories of both Christian and Muslim violence is unflinching and a worthwhile read. But I found the quality uneven. For example, the Jewish holocaust perpetrated by the Nazis is included in Andrews' catalogue of Christian violence - yes, shamefully the churches stood by and even embraced "German Christian" theology, but they were not the chief actors in the violence. The Nazis should not be seen as a Christian movement - they were inspired by Northern European pagan mythology and tended to despise Christianity as weak. On the other hand, there is no mention of the expulsion of Muslim Moors from Spain, which might have made a better example of violence inspired by Christianity.Andrews sets out very particular criteria for "holy war" but then only seems to apply it to violence by Muslim actors. He also fails to engage with the Christian "just war" traditions in his discussion of nonviolence.I guess it should be seen as a compliment that reading this book just left me wanting more - a more thorough approach, a more carefully edited book, more facts, more stories. Yes, read it, but not as the final word on the subject.

As a Christian I didn't really need to be convinced that we should treat Muslims as brothers and sisters or seek peace, but I was heartened to read the "Reframing Jihad" chapter which quotes various Islamic teachers who feel the same, and also the practical examples of both Christians and Muslims who have done just that. It's easy to feel despairing or angry in our current environment, so thanks for the encouragement to keep on hoping!

By Keith Giles In many ways, this book would make a great follow-up for those who have already read “Muslims, Christians and Jesus” by Carl Medearis, which I highly recommend.Medearis’ book is a great place to start, especially for Christians who need to have their illusions shattered about who Muslims are and what they think of Jesus [or “Isa” as they know him best].This book, by Dave Andrews, is a great book to read after you’ve read “Christians, Muslims and Jesus” because it takes a more academic approach – where Medearis takes a more personal and anecdotal approach to the topic.Another reason I would recommend this order of reading the two books is that Dave Andrews’ book doesn’t take the time to demonstrate what we have in common with Muslims – other than to point out that both Christians and Muslims have been guilty of bloody, war-mongering and various atrocities in the name of God.So, for me, Andrews takes a more negative approach, whereas Medearis takes a more positive one. This isn’t to say that I didn’t find Andrews’ book enjoyable. Far from it. I underlined and highlighted nearly half of the book which typically indicates that I was being challenged by something he said, or that I was marking areas that I wanted to come back to later and reconsider more in depth. The book is broken up into two parts. The second part of the book is really what I found the most fascinating and insightful. He kicks this section off [in Chapter 4] with “Reframing Jihad as a Method of Nonviolent Struggle”. This chapter unpacks an excellent overview of another book called “On Killing” by Lt. Col. Dave Grossman about how men are not really “natural born killers”. On the contrary, it is the pervasive tendency for men to avoid killing others that motivates the military to systematically re-train [read “brainwash”] their soldiers to overcome.[from the book]How Soldiers Are Conditioned To Kill:*Frame killing as protecting or saving lives - The only way to save lives of those you love is to kill others.*Portray the enemy as sub-human - It’s easier to kill people if you don’t identify with them or if you think of them as “evil” or as animals.*Demand obedience to leaders - Men will do almost anything if they are under strong social pressure to comply.*Develop the capacity for collective violence - Accentuate their fear of letting their squad down. Diffuse responsibility across the group.Increase the distance between the trigger and the target - It’s easier to kill from a distance with drones, missiles, bombs, etc. Talk about firing at targets, not people. Speak of sinking ships, not of drowning sailors.*Frame the violence so it is an object being destroyed, not another human being.*The book goes on to point out how these same methods are being employed by our media to socialize us towards the redemptive qualities of violence.Violence is an almost inescapable part of our culture today. So, it’s no wonder that most of us view violence as a means to solve problems or to achieve a better world.Andrews hopes to awaken us to this deception of the age, and I am in complete solidarity with him on this point.Later on, in this same chapter, Andrews goes on to say:“Separating religion from politics does not mean we do not bring our faith and the ethics derived from our faith to bear on our politics in terms of our discussions about politics. To the contrary, all real believers cannot help but bring their faith and ethics derived from their faith to bear on their politics…But separating religion from politics means not using our particular religion for party political purposes as a means of manipulation or exploitation to gain or retain power. For our faith to be “non-political” means for it to be “non-partisan” and “not-imposed”.”I couldn’t agree more! His conclusion is a masterpiece, in my opinion. Having built a strong foundation for us in the previous chapters which provided details about how both Islam and Christianity have been polluted by those who seek to manipulate the faithful and circumvent the peaceful aspects of their founder’s teachings in order to reframe faith and nationalism as a singular idealogy, Andrews ends with a look at the Sermon on the Mount. He suggests that Christians should return to the manifesto of Jesus if they truly seek to accomplish the will of God and to become peacemakers who follow the example of Jesus. It was a personal thrill for me to see that Andrews even quoted Erica Chenoweth’s excellent study “Why Civil Resistance Works” to validate the effectiveness of nonviolence as a means to disarm oppressors and end conflict. [Fans of the “Pacifist Fight Club” take note].Overall, the book was a refreshing and much-needed exploration of Islam and Christianity, without all the over-emotional nonsense that typically permeates most discussions these days.If you’re willing to lay aside your prejudices about Muslims and enter into a thoughtful study of how followers of Jesus might actually reach out and bring peace to our world today, I think “The Jihad of Jesus” is an excellent place to begin.-kgFULL DISCLOSURE: I was provided with a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

With summer school well underway, he’s starting to feel like he’s getting the hang of this teaching gig, particularly since he’s pretty sure his students are the most awesome kids ever. When a suspiciously high number of students and teachers don’t show up one day, Sam is thrown into a situation he can’t believe. Nanites have saved many lives, but now it’s all gone wrong and people are going crazy. Trapped inside the school, Sam has to ride out the wave of insanity sweeping across the land. There’s one thing he’s very sure of…no one is going to hurt his kids. He’ll get them to safety, no matter what comes between them and the road home. The Book of Sam is a prequel to the Between Life and Death series. Go back and experience the nanite apocalypse from the beginning with Sam, a character favorite of readers in the first book, The In-Betweener.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Tears and cheers. By Deb Robbins I read this wonderful book in very short order. I usually read a couple of books at a time, until I find one that captivates me and requires all of my attention. The Book of Sam did that from the first chapter.Sam is a true hero, a person who does something only because it’s the right thing to do. Disaster brings out the best in some people, and that is certainly true of Sam. There’s no doubt that he could have survived better on his own, but the thought never crosses his mind. None of the kids that he sheltered could have survived without him. Each character in the book has a wonderfully individual personality, which is not an easy thing to do with kids of varying ages. Jeremy and Veronica are the best developed characters, after Sam, because they are the oldest. I’d adopt Jeremy if I could. Sam’s fear of teenagers is hilarious, and Veronica’s attitude is perfect. Piper is beautifully depicted, without glossing over the difficulties of a special needs child. I felt like I got to know each of them.I loved reading Sam’s story. It made me both laugh and cry, for him and for his small tribe. It also makes his part in Emily’s story that much more remarkable. This book is a complete story and can be read as a stand-alone, but it’s a great addition to Ann Christy’s Between Life and Death series. I highly recommend all three books in that series. Sam plays a crucial role in the first book, and this is the story of how he got there.I received an advance copy of this book from Ann Christy, because she does cool things like that.

By Cheree~For Love of Books4 The Book of Sam, a prequel for Between Life and Death series by Ann Christy is just….freaking epic!! We meet Sam in The In-Betweener, book 1 in the series, and you can tell how big a heart he has in the little bits of him we get to see there. But in this book, you grow to love and cherish this man and the size of his heart. He is a selfless, kind, giving, piece of wonderful! I found that the more I read into this book, the more I could feel my heart constricting, knowing what was coming. Little things that shouldn’t have been a big deal, made me break down into tears! I also love that with this book we get to see Ann’s version of the apocalypse from the first day it goes down, and how it all starts. We get to see how he meets Veronica, who is the main character of books 1&2 in this series, and how they managed to survive for 2 years before Emily finds them. I found myself hoping and wishing that the ending would change, but, this is no fairy tale.I absolutely love this series, and didn’t think it could get any better, until I read this book. All I can really say is this is a series that MUST BE READ!!!

They were unbelievably real to me...which makes it worse when the author crushed my dreams. I shouldn't have read this first before the other books, because now, my heart hurts for Sam. I won't put spoilers, just know, that my heart is filled with sadness and hate. (Ann, really? My two favorite characters? Really?)

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Non-stop adventure and discovery By Jody L Rose _The King of Shards_ by Matthew Kressel is a delightful fantasy adventure in the same vein as The Tales of the Arabian Nights -- with a bit of Edgar Rice Burroughs and Clifford D. Simack thrown in for good measure -- incorporating ancient Sumerian, Babylonian, Assyrian, Vedic, and Hebrew mythologies, and creates what is, at the heart of this novel, a coming of age story. That the protagonist, Daniel Fisher, is a young man in his mid-twenties does in no way disqualify the novel as Bildungsroman; one need not be a twelve year old boy or girl to undergo a rite of passage. Rites of passage are extant throughout one's lifespan or developmental stages, from infancy to old age: Matthew Kressel's _The King of Shards_ is exemplar.Daniel Fisher is abducted on his wedding day by the demon king Ashmedai and carried to another dimension far removed from modern day Earth. In fact, this other dimension is not even on Earth, but on another world altogether different, a populated "shard" or remnant from when the universe was first formed and then shattered into many pieces, shards which float, as it were, within the Great Deep or black void of endless space, all the while tethered to and dependent upon the Earth and her bounty to sustain them. Hidden on Earth are thirty-six saints who are pillars of the universe holding up the Earth and all the disparate shards. Theses saints are the Hidden Ones called the Lamed Vav, who, like the electromagnetic force within an atom, keep the floating shards from flying apart into the Great Deep and taking the Earth with them.Ashmedai believes Daniel Fisher is one of the Lamed Vav, even though Daniel himself is clueless, not unlike the happy fool going about his business in the world. But happy fool could not be further from the truth, for Daniel can only find happiness through helping others in need, and does so by volunteering for and managing a shelter for the homeless in New York. Daniel's other source of joy is his bride, Rebecca, whose appearance is deceptive. Rebecca has other, more deadly plans for her intended, and pursues him into Gehinnom, the shard to which Ashmedai has conveyed and concealed Daniel from discovery. There, Ashmedai tells Daniel that Daniel is a Lamed Vav, and that the demon Queen Mashit is systematically killing the Lamed Vav so that she can ultimately destroy the Earth and all the shards. What ensues is wild adventure in a desert landscape where strange golem like creatures eat human flesh, shape changing demons appear out of nowhere, lusty witches cast lurid spells, giant birds speak, and music that has the power to create or destroy life, reside and struggle against adversarial conditions.Readers who enjoy studying the Twenty-Two Letters of Sacred Text will enjoy reading _The King of Shards_, as will anyone who enjoys a rousing epic fantasy. _The King of Shards_ is written in past tense omniscient point of view and is Matthew Kressel’s debut novel, Book One of The Worldmender Trilogy.

By David Crane Knowing Matt as a writer from the old days, I must say that this is one of his best and most ambitious literary projects up to date. A trilogy is a very hard thing to write, but Matt Kressel is not afraid of the challenge and does just that. The First Book of the "King Of Shards," introduces a mystical realm that feels both magical and very real. The number and diversity of characters may seem intimidating at first, but once you go deeper into the story, you learn how this unusual world works and what rules its inhabitants must follow in order to survive and win. In this fantasy tale of good versus evil, nothing is black and white, and the characters face tough choices as they confront incredible challenges from both sides of the spectrum. Action, suspense, magic and unique prose offers the reader an incredibly fresh fantastic voyage into author's imagination. Well done!David Crane author of Price of Life and Die To Live Again

Matthew Kressel's writing, which is replete with captivating imagery, takes you on an amazing ride through the shards of a different, mystical universe while thoughtfully intertwining pieces of the old testament and Kabbalah. I'm really looking forward to the next book in the trilogy.

A riveting, action-packed, post-apocalyptic survival story from a master of SF When your life is based on lies, how do you hunt down the truth? Jerry Beche should be dead. Instead, he's rescued from a desolate Earth where he was the last man alive. He's then trained for the toughest conditions imaginable and placed with a crack team of specialists on an isolated island. Every one of them is a survivor, as each withstood the violent ending of their own alternate Earth. And their new specialism? To retrieve weapons and data in missions to other apocalyptic versions of our world. But what is "the Authority," the shadowy organization that rescued Beche and his fellow survivors? How does it access timelines to find other Earths? And why does it need these instruments of death? As Jerry struggles to obey his new masters, he begins to distrust his new companions. A strange bunch, their motivations are less than clear, and accidents start plaguing their missions. Jerry suspects the Authority is feeding them lies, and team members are spying on him. As a dangerous situation spirals into catastrophe, is there anybody he can trust?

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. An unexpectedly low energy affair By Tghu Verd I've enjoyed all of Gibson's previous novels but this was a drab effort, lacking pace of plot, interesting characterization or even particularly challenging ideas. Indeed, the challenge I had was finishing it, so dreary was the mid-section of the novel. I was so disengaged that even though it's his "latest" novel, the lack of composure compared to those prior novels made me wonder whether it's an earlier work that has been dusted off and published on the back of his success.Whether that's the case or not, "Extinction Game" is essentially a POV thriller based on the premise that a shadowy "Authority" plucks the literal 'last man standing' from parallel Earth's that suffered some kind of global disaster and appoints them to a search and rescue team hitting up other apocalyptic Earth's from the apparently infinite multiverse. Add in hints of internecine politics within the Authority, a complete lack of "Why" any of this is happening plus the forced teamwork of a half dozen sole survivors, and Gibson sets the scene for what could be an interesting and complex sci-fi thriller.Instead, and despite a great opening sequence, it's almost drab. I feel that this stems from Gibson adopting that first-person viewpoint and especially because our protagonist, Jerry Beche, was not particularly engaging or likable for my taste. Gibson keeps him passive for at least half the novel and I find it difficult to really care when the main character fails to deliver much in the way of oomph to situations. By the time his dander is up and he starts punching above his weight, it was too late for me, I was by then merely plodding through to see what the story was about.Plus, the situations are pretty lackluster. Channeling our viewpoint through Jerry limits the tension. Sure, Jerry can surmise what the others are feeling, but that is not the same as being in their heads. Which was a shame because those hints of politics could have really ratcheted things up if we were privy to them rather than riding along with Jerry. In a similar vein, most of the parallel worlds that Jerry visits are used as the set up for the mystery, rather than triggers for the mystery. It seems a minor point of difference but in terms of plot tension and the inherent mechanics of a mystery thriller, it is a crucial difference and the sad fact is that you could strip out pretty much all of the multiverse day trips and it would not collapse the heart of the story. Finally, there was the science. Gibson typically skates pretty quickly over the 'how things work' aspect of his universes, but it seemed the ice was particularly thin in "Extinction Game". There are a few explanations later in the novel for some of the aspects of Jerry et al's hops between worlds, but for the most part I was left pondering things large and small. Gibson has written a few novels in a series - think the "The Shoal Sequence - so perhaps he'll continue Jerry's journey in a sequel, but I won't be buying it.So, for me, this was not a comparable effort to his other work. It's expensive, I found it sadly wooden in execution, and there wasn't really a point that I could find. Two stars and no recommendation that you purchase it, it's certainly not the outcome I expected when it hit my Kindle!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. a bit disappointing (weak four), but I'd be interested in a follow up By B. Capossere I was really looking forward to Gary Gibson's Extinction Game, as it combines two of my favorite concepts: parallel universes and post-apocalyptic settings. But while I found it a generally pleasant read, I'd be lying if I didn't admit it was a bit disappointing, perhaps because of those high expectations. The premise is so great I'm shocked that it hasn't actually been done before. Jerry Beche, one of the few survivors of an extinction-level, planet-wide plague, hasn't seen a person for years., so he is understandably surprised when he finds a set of footprints outside his home. He is even more shocked when the people those prints belong to abduct him and then explain they are from a parallel universe Earth that has also suffered its own extinction event. Even better, they work for a mysterious entity (is there any other kind of entity?) called The Authority, which is overseeing a kind of exploratory salvage mission through a series of post-apocalyptic Earths. Of course, being a "mysterious entity," hints soon crop up that the Authority might not be as benevolent as they want to seem, and and is in fact holding back some crucial information from their "Pathfinders," the group of explorers Jerry becomes a member of. It also turns out that some of what the Authority is hiding might have a more personal connection to Jerry. In many ways, then, Extinction Game, is less a post-apocalyptic novel than a conspiracy/murder investigation novel. That isn't to say we don't see a decent number of end-of-the-world scenarios, some of which are more original/interesting than others, including an asteroid strike (which actually becomes a tourist event by visitors from the Authority's Earth, a nuclear war, a rogue brown star (one of my favorites), and an engineered virus that left one Earth filled with strange bee-human hybrids (one of the most original and another personal favorite). The plot is solid, though I'd say large parts are pretty predictable. Gibson makes no bones about the Authority having some ulterior motives, but I wish they'd been a bit more surprising. Jerry's more personal mystery has an underlying premise I liked quite a bit (I'm avoiding spoilers here), but its resolution felt somewhat flat. The novel kept my attention for the most part, but unfortunately its weakest section came toward the end, where it devolved into too much talking, with too much plot being revealed not by action, but by second and even third-hand accounts through dialogue. And worse, dialogue that was more summary than anything else. I'd also say the plot was harmed by one of my personal pet peeves--people just not talking to one another (at one point, I wrote as a note, "Just tell them!").Gibson does a better job with the characters and their inter-relationships. Jerry especially is sharply formed, starting off with his introduction as a man nearly driven insane by loneliness (he spends a lot of early time talking to his dead wife). His Pathfinder mentor, Nadia, is also a strong character, and I liked his relationship with her quite a bit. I also thought Gibson did a good job presenting a diversity of characters, not just in the usual sense (racial, sexual), but also in the varied responses to the end of the world. On the downside, Jerry does fall a bit too quickly into a romantic relationship for my liking (to be fair, there is an explanation for this), and I wished for a stronger, better defined villain. The prose style was solid; if it wasn't noticeable for any particular richness or lyricism, than it also didn't distract for worse reasons. And if Extinction Game didn't quite meet my hopes for some wildly inventive and richly detailed apocalypse-Earths, Gibson has left himself open to revisiting this group of people and this universe (s). I'd like to see what he might do with a follow-up.(first appeared on fantasyliterature.com)

I really liked the set up of the dystopian alternate realities and the Author was ableto play around with them in interesting ways. The characters were somewhat text bookbut the main character was interesting and the way his background is revealed is wellpaced. There are a few rather large info dump chapters that I think could have beenhandled a little smoother. One chapter that is handled well is a flash back while therewere a couple later on that were just characters spewing exposition at each other. The plot twists were pretty well handled and although they were not super originalthey worked out pretty well. There are some plot threads left hanging for sequels but it is a complete story. I wasglad to not be left with a cliffhanger ending.

By alina harajuku zombie Mike Evans+ fast Zombies+surviver orphans = a awesome read!If you reached book nr 3 Shaun, Ellie and the gang are laready part of the Family. The Family is expanding and there are some spirits heating up. It's not a good thing in a world dominated by zombies but for us, the readers, it's awesome, because more drama and action makes for a captivating read.If you are a fan of a fast paced and interesting Zombie read pls don't skip this one !

You find yourself becoming attached to a character, then worry whether or not they will make it through the book!

By MothersNghtmare Starting with the first book of the series I quickly became enthralled completing the first three books in less than a week. I went to purchase the fourth but found I need to wait. I don't want to wait and I don't want this to end. Very rarely do I find a series that I actually want to keep buying multiple books but this book will stick in my memory. If you are a fan of "The Walking Dead" then this series is for you. If you like thrillers and suspense then you should really read this. If you like mystery or the supernatural then you will most likely find this enjoyable. Lastly is if you are a "Prepper" you will seriously appreciate this book. You will come to care for many of the characters as well as loathe a few. It will make you sad and make you happy and may even make your blood pump faster but it will definitely not bore you. I am soon looking forward to book four and have marked it on my calendar.

From the Inside Flap The Lure of Sea Glass is a much-awaited sequel to the ever-popular Pure Sea Glass book released in 2004. This elegant compilation reveals extraordinary stories that will inspire readers to continue their quest for coastal treasures and broaden their understanding of the history within their collections. The artistry of Celia Pearson is once again featured with over 115 stunning photographs of sea glass from around the country. Her ability to capture the true essence and detail of these colorful gems has been recognized by several museums that retain a number of her sea-glass images in their permanent collections. In addition to stories of healing by the sea, collections from 14 regions of the United States are profiled with background on why certain shards are likely to be found in those areas. The reader is presented with more aspects on shard identification and exposed to the role history plays in what is found along their shores. A number of special, uncommon finds are profiled that should further entice beachcombers to renew their search for these rare collectibles. After exploring what really draws people to this wonderful pursuit, the book ultimately looks at the role of sea glass in our past, present, and future.

While the first book is the pre-eminent identification, classification and history go-to sea glass guide, this new book shares the personal beachcombing journeys of sea glass collectors. The shared stories of falling in love with the hobby and discovering nature's gems during poignant life moments, along with the stunning photographs by Celia Pearson, make this book a joy to read and enjoy.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Inspiration for the Hornblower series By Gregory Chalik This is not a fictional "boys own adventure" described by another online reviewer. So far as I have checked all the historical individuals, events and ships or vessels mentioned in the book did exist, and did happen as described. The naval descriptions are highly technical, and in a language of the period, so bring a dictionary if you are not VERY familiar with the structure of the square rigged warships, and the language used by their ship's companies. It seems to me, based on 25 years of military history research, that descriptions of Midshipman Ralph Chester's "adventures" are actually the sort of events that were expected to occur as part of a naval officers duty and service at that time in the RN history, and are NOT fictitious. The language used is very early 19th century, so the writer, who lived in the second half of the 19th century, was very familiar with the pre-Victorian style of English, which to me suggests he was conversant with someone from the period, and that perhaps this book is intended to be biographical, perhaps of his father who served in the RN during the period.A Lieutenant Robert Daniel Lancaster was mentioned for a gallant fight with an American privateer and being taken prisoner in 1814, though perhaps a relative rather than the author's father since the events in the book describe a midshipman in 1794.Anyone who loves naval history of the Napoleonic period would hugely enjoy this book, and I was compelled to write this review while still only half way through it!

As war spreads around the globe, every nation becomes entangled in its’ web of destruction. Editing mistakes like that are inexcusable and should be fixed before publishing. Hopefully the next installment in the series will have that sorted out as I really enjoy the plot.

The for s ebook, The Vanishing, was really good and I anxiously hoped the author would indeed write more. Part two is fast paced and really gripping! Given current events, it reads more like tomorrow's news than a work of fiction.Note: there are some annoying misspellings and a few instances where the character's name is w wrong, but nothing that really impairs the reader's ability to understand what is happening.Highly recommend it!

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Interesting treatment By Jody Maley I enjoyed the fast pace and action. The premise of a western mountain town holding out against invasion is believable. The characters grow in different ways as they accept God or still doubt. Dialog is a bit thin between characters. I do wish the book's editing was better. Seems to have been edited by non American English speakers. Annoying at times. "Since" instead of "sense", ect. Still worth your time as an exploration of what life in the end time might be while the earth waits for Christ's return.

Divina Comedia (Spanish Edition), by Dante Alighieri

About the Author Dante Alighieri was an Italian poet of the Middle Ages, best known for his masterpiece, the epic Divine Comedy, considered to be one of the greatest poetic works in literature.

A native of Florence, Dante was deeply involved in his city-state s politics and had political, as well as poetic, ambitions. He was exiled from Florence in 1301 for backing the losing faction in a dispute over the pope s influence, and never saw Florence again.

While in exile, Dante wrote the Comedy, the tale of the poet s pilgrimage through Hell, Purgatory, and Paradise. To reach the largest possible audience for the work, Dante devised a version of Italian based largely on his own Tuscan dialect and incorporating Latin and parts of other regional dialects. In so doing, he demonstrated the vernacular s fitness for artistic expression, and earned the title Father of the Italian language.

Dante died in Ravenna in 1321, and his body remains there despite the fact that Florence erected a tomb for him in 1829.

Disculpame mis errors in escribir, el libro no necesita disculpos.

Since I'm blessed with the gift of forgetting plots, stories, characters and such, I could read those books featuring Arsene Lupin as many times as I wanted, and I always enjoyed them as if I was reading them for the first time.Leblanc was able to create the most spectacular character of all time. Better than Sherlock Holmes, better than Hercule Poirot, Auguste Dupin, better than anything I have ever read till today (I'm 25 now).Lupin is, to say little, complex. He is capable of loving and hating with the same passion. He can hate a friend and he can love an enemy with all his heart. Leblanc thought him as a Robin Hood of his time. Possessing a fine eye for art, books, women and deciphering secrets, Lupin has lived many lifes as different people, each one better than the other. In his bboks, Leblanc created the plots using parts of french history, including treasures, landscape, hidden tunnels, immortal characters, wars, etc. This collection of short stories is just an introduction to the wonderful world of Arsene Lupin and to his world. There are many books featuring Lupin, and in my opinion the best are, in order:813; The hollow needle; Crystal Stopper; Teeth of the tiger; The Comtesse de Cagliostro; The eight strokes of the clock; The Eunerville Secret. All these books are wonderful adventures, and should be re-edited in english as soon as possible.Grade 9.5/10

He robs from only the extremely wealthy, and usually, the most corrupt people who deserve it. His methods are playfull, and he will often send a letter to the police, the victims, and newspapers before he committs a crime to give them forwarning, which in turn makes his robberies even more daring and unique. Lupin has it all! This book deals with a tale about a Duke who is just returning from an Antartica Adventure only to find that his best friends house is about to be robbed by Lupin (and has in the past). Once the ball gets rolling, every new fact and clue twists the plot and changes the motives. How does Lupin do it? You'll Just have to find out. This is a great series by Maurice Leblanc. I would recomend reading "Homelock Shears vs Arsene Lupin" and "The Crystal Stopper" before this, just to get to know Lupin better.

9 of 9 people found the following review helpful. absolutely hilarious! By Arsene Lupin Having read both Chinese and English versions of this book, I'd first establish that the English translation has a much better woven plot and greater tension between the characters. No doubt, we all know that Arsene Lupin is one extremely charming gentleman burglar, with a soft spot for women (esp. beautiful women). What made this reading so enjoyable (perhaps it's because I'm overtly sentimental and like romantic novels) is partly because of the romantic 'subplot' involving Sonia and Arsene Lupin.Of course, I personally think that this is not really typical of Maurice Leblanc himself to write such a mushy lovey-dovey subplot and I wonder if Edgar Jepson co-wrote this book with him, or only after Leblanc had passed away. (Then again, it doesn't matter, since I did like the mushy bits anyway. They were absolutely hilarious!) Other Lupin books that I've read were certainly more capable of creating essential suspense, for e.g. The Extraordinary Adventures of Arsene Lupin, Gentleman Burglar (N.B. This book might have been revised and edited from Arsene Lupin, Gentleman Burglar. I'm not too sure, because this was written by the mystery writing team, Boileau-Narcejac.)I do agree that the pace of the novel is a little slow, but perhaps it feels slow because it requires length to be able to reveal the full implications of certain details which is necessary to create suspense and tension. Characters might have been made to look diabolically extreme, in that Arsene Lupin always seems to be the good guy, and poor Guerchard takes on the baddie's role. However, one has to read the other Lupin works to understand how intelligent our dear Lupin is, and certainly much cleverer than the average detective.I did thoroughly enjoy this book, but I have to give it only 4 out of 5 stars because I found it rather fairy-tale like, not quite characteristic of other Leblanc works which I truly adore and would rank them above Dolye's Sherlock Holmes.
