Author Jesse Vernon Trail crafted a fascinating discussion about plants. He covers a lot of ground (pun not intended) but doesn't get bogged down in the details. The book is logically divided into bite-sized chunks and is easy to follow. This is a descriptive book and what science there is, is very clearly explained. The photographs are beautiful. I recommend this book for anyone interested in botany, whether they have a science background or not. It goes well with, and does not overlap with, Thor Hanson's The Triumph of Seeds.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Excellent photos and loads of information marred by flawed writing. Most descriptions are quite brief. By lyndonbrecht This is an extremely frustrating book. The writing is mostly not very good, but sometimes gets a little better. The amount of information is amazing, and the photos are quite good. The overall organization is, to me. not particularly logical. Descriptions of plants are mostly quite short, and I think fewer descriptions and more substance to the ones covered would have made this a better book. It could have been such a good book, the idea is great and the author seems to know his material thoroughly. But the writing, consistently not very good. In this book at least, Trail has an irritating habit of using "we" as if we were on a tour. Might work in a video but not so well in the book. There's also one sizable error somebody should have caught: "During the building of the Suez Canal in Central America..." He also refers to the Indian pipe from the meadows of Greenland, which I think is an error but could not track down. The problem with such errors is that they tend to discredit other information.I found a couple of the photos to be wonderful. One is of a rock fig clinging to a nearly vertical cliff face. And the one of the quiver tree looks like Dali painted a Mexican cowboy's spurs. I found a couple of the chapters to be better than the others. One is the chapter on adaptations to the arctic, and the other is the chapter on "rocksplitters."Other readers may find other chapters interesting--the information really is interesting. There are chapters on vegetative reproduction, adaptations to the desert, adaptations to fire and defensive strategies.
