Review

"This book is simple, well organized and inspiring! The projects are fresh and fun and any non-sewing parent would enjoy teaching their child the basics of sewing while learning how to sew themselves. The instructions are clear and supported by loads of fabulous and brightly colored photos. I am so glad the authors chose to begin by teaching the basics of hand sewing as this is where it truly all begins in the world of sewing. The years of combined experience between the authors is evident in the organization of the projects and the skills they teach. Kudos to Janith and Christine! Seacoast Sewing will certainly be using this book in our kids' classes." - Jill Patsfield, Seacoast Sewing and Quilting

"Starting with hand sewing and moving up to machine stitching, the 15 projects are designed to gradually increase a young sewer's skill set. Initial projects are a needle case and a tooth fairy pillow, both made by hand. Then, as confidence builds, the final project is a poncho with a separating zipper. It's guaranteed sewing satisfaction!" - The American Sewing Guild's Notions magazine

Melillo I found this guide to provide excellent background in sewing (and I speak as one who is an experienced seamstress, and who began sewing at the age of 12.) Several friends of mine, who were trained dressmakers, have given private lessons in sewing, and they had to deal with the myth, common to those who never have sewn, that one goes in for a lesson or two and comes out with a finished outfit. In truth, to have any real abilities in sewing, one must understand all of the materials, techniques, and fabrics, and what I found outstanding in this book is that all of these concepts are introduced in detail.Adult sewing students are not exempt from the misconception that one can become accomplished very quickly - in fact, they can most easily become frustrated, and consider their teacher to be incompetent because they didn't learn to 'run up two seams and have a ready-made dress.' But children, in particular, often do not have a clear picture of steps one must take, and background that is necessary, to develop real facility. Another plus for this book is that, as each chapter introduces another item to learn, there also is a recap of 'what you already have learnt.' It gives a very positive flair, with focus on the sum total of skills one is developing at every stage. The writing style is thorough and engaging. If someone has any interest in sewing, I would say the text would capture and encourage the new student in each chapter. Illustrations are detailed and attractive. Where kids could become bored, were someone to explain zips and threads without allowing them to participate in any projects, these necessary explanations include using what one has just learnt. This is not a 'do-it-yourself' manual, where someone with no-one more experienced at hand could develop as a seamstress. But it is a good guide, both for those new to sewing and those seeking to teach them, which could take them through steps in a positive, interesting, and encouraging manner. By the time one completed the steps in this books, a young student would have a strong background, sufficient to move to relatively advanced sewing.

By Bless Their Hearts Mom his is a great book! it takes you, and your child, from the basics of hand sewing to machine sewing, with plenty of photos to explain EACH step in the process of making an item. And the projects are ones that kids will love to make, either for themselves, or to give as presents! The machine sewing section starts off with paper sewing, to master straight lines and how to pivot with a needle (templates included). This is a very important step. I can remember my grandmother having me do the same thing (only she drew lines on a piece of paper with a ruler- no printers then! LOL). Then it is on to simple projects like a pot holder, frame, bag and cape. All of which teach basic skills. Then the projects get a little more time consuming and harder. Each project is noted with an hour glass on the first page, telling you how long the project takes- helpful when you have a limited amount of time. These projects include sewing pockets for a bedside organizer, sewing a quilted bag and a pillow with a secret zipper compartment (for their diary!). Again, the sewing skills progress based on what they have already learned. The last section allows for the creativity to come out and for kids to sew clothes, like shorts, a kimono and a poncho, that again stretch their skills, teaching them to follow simple patterns, learning to cut/sew on curves, and how you can alter patterns. The appendix then follows up with sewing machine basics, and Tool Kit and Fabric explanations. personally I think those last 3 should be in the beginning, and we started with them after we finished hand-sewing. it's up to you, but we wanted to make sure the kids knew the basics before they started sewing projects.

It starts out with simple hand sewing projects and progresses to more advanced machine sewing projects. Each project showcases a sewing technique. The directions are clear and concise. The illustrations are beautiful and extremely helpful. This is a great go-to-book for techniques and a fabulous gift for those just delving into sewing. Enjoy!
