By Kismeta It had been a long dry spell without much mention of Edward Abbey, then BAM!...2015 comes along. Of the three (!) books that have been published about the ol' desert rat this year (All the Wild that Remains by David Gessner; Finding Abbey by Sean Prentiss), this is the clear standout. It is a collection of insightful work by various authors, from scholarly types to independent writers to friends and acquaintances of Abbey's. For the most part each essay is roughly 7 to 8 pages, so the reader finds himself easily engaged throughout. Each writer within has his or her own style and perspective on Cactus Ed. As it is, the editor, John Murray, has the lengthiest essay, as well as a review of The Fool's Progress, which, at 528 pages, is Abbey's biggest tome. Still, Murray is a great writer and his are, in my mind, the most engaging chunks in this wonderful book. The only unfavorable remark I can think to say about this great oeuvre is that, at $36, it is mighty expensive. Too expensive (the same can be said for the Kindle version, which is also $36!). I shall only be buying it when I can find a clean, cheap used copy. I was happy the local library purchased it on my recommendation, and happier now that I've read it, but I really shouldn't pilfer it from the poor old ladies. All told, this is a MUST for any fan of Ed or for those who would like a great introduction to him.
