This book was a great read, and I recommend it to anyone who enjoys outdoor life. It covers a young man's journey as his family picks up and moves west. It contains many twists and great deal of action including many brushes with Indians and a good deal of hunting adventures. I'm now reading another novel by the same author.Read this; it's free anyway. I don't write many reviews, but this book deserves a good word and none have yet been written here.

The author fills in his lack of knowledge about the western expansion days of the United States with colloquial pictures he probably read in someone else's dime novels. It is just very difficult to translate American experience into British story telling. The eventual, prevailing hero is a Brit who shows those dumb Irish-Americans how to survive, time after time.

People seemed to get through some tough scrapes in those days, without much complaining. A very good window on life on the frontier from a man who lived it.
