"Be part of building a new kingdom, eh? Well, I admit that be an offer a man does no' get every day. What say ye, daughter?"

"We came looking for work. I say this fits the bill."

Broden and his daughter Riana have spent their lives as archers and hunters for their mountain village - and outcasts as well. When the infamous Court Wizard of Estole shows up, they discover they have the special affinity for magic he desperately needs. The two agree to his offer of becoming wizard-partners with him and his sister, but neither Broden nor Riana really know what to expect. Estole is a new country, only months old, and rife with problems as the new king tries to create a government, new laws, and fight off the old country he absconded from. They quickly learn that it will take every ounce of skill they have to keep their new countrymen alive and safe.

I totally lost interest when I discovered the main story is based on total lack of planning by the "king" and his mages. which seem to make up the whole kingdom. they run around doing everything, never mind delegating, or have a staff of workers. never mind putting all those new arrivals in your kingdom TO WORK. or maybe build an ARMY out of them. no just have the mages build a wooden wall, or guard the town. The lack of rules astonish me. they "with drew" from the kingdom because they didn't like the rules. so sure, march into the Kings main room and announce you are going to rebel and then be surprised when he tries to kill you. or sends an army to do so. really? I just can't wrap my head around this story. A teenagers view of how to make a world work. never mind, how do you feed thousands, economy, a justice system... oh and what do you do with all those homeless kids? hmmm ever hear of orphanages? school? how about training up some good citizens? I can see the plot on this story, no mystery, I see the romance, if you call it that. the story holds no surprises. and I can't buy into the teenagers world. could not finish this book

No betrayal, selfishness, no subplots; no real tension. There is also a dearth of sensory detail. We have no idea what their clothes(except those worn to sleep in) look like. Aside from two piles of garbage and some smoke and some fish, we have no idea what things smelled like. What did the new foods offered this previously raggedly poor father and daughter taste like. Few colors are even hinted at. Plot threads are left hanging...for instance at the begining of the rescue mission, one of the group is described as dancer-like and purportedly able to climb anything. She doesn't climb anything or really participate in the rescue at all. These characters and indeed the existing plot need a thoughtful rewrite, complete with subplots, bad guys and lots and lots of detail.

By Jay Dominguez I'm writing this review in response to the reviewers who gave negative reviews to this book because of its simplistic plot. They're right, the plot is pretty simple, and it meanders around a lot without a clear in-story goal or destination (one can argue that the 'formation of the country' is the goal, but that was not achieved in this book). However I didn't get the feeling that these reviewers have read many of Honor Raconteurs books. Raconteur is what I would call a 'character author', which is an author who writes solely for the characters in her books. If you read some of her end of the book acknowledgements or posts to fans about he books, you'll notice she talks about the characters of her books like they are real people who are telling her their story. Authors like this don't always focus on the plot like they should, so books that sort of meander like this one crop up every once in a while in an author's bibliography. Is that to say this is a bad book? I say not. I'm very much a character oriented reader, so authors who spend so much time writing fun, likable characters are the ones I gravitate towards. I like this book because the characters are interesting, their dialogue is funny, and they get into amusing situations. This is not a book that has a statement to make or a 'moral of the story', its just a light read to pass the time and get to know some of Raconteur's newest characters. If you need a story with a solid plot I would suggest reading Kingmaker or Deepwoods, but if you don't mind just sitting back and reading about twin magical siblings running around trying to help their brother run a country while towing confused archers then try this book out.P.S. Its actually the archers who are the main characters, buuuutttt I would argue that Ash and Ashlynn steal the show whenever their present, especially when their together.
