“My candle burns on both ends; It will not last the night. But ah my foes, and oh my friends, It gives a lovely light!” It is now 30 days until Grace’s Deathday That is the fate on the red card Grace was dealt at age six on Dealing Day. A burner. Her twin sister, Millay, was dealt a white card. A People. No Deathday. For twenty years, the sisters have lived different lives. In different places. Then there’s the wild card, Ryker, a burner, who has no memories of his own past. In what was left of the world after the Chaos, mankind surrendered control to Dealer, a powerful computer that has kept society running for centuries. But truths don’t come easy. And everyone and everything is not as they appear. The mantra in following Dealer’s edicts: It is what it is. Until today. “Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold; Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world!”

Review "A crackling science thriller in the vein of Crichton that mixes action with science fiction." Kirkus reference Bob Mayer's The Rock.

From the Author The inspiration for burners came to us, several years ago, while we were living in Chapel Hill, NC, shortly after the birth of our first grandson, Riley. We were thinking of his future and what things will be like as science changes things, especially with regards to genetics and computing; and also framing that in terms of what's happening now with wealth inequality. The core question for us was: What's the most valuable thing a person has? And the answer was TIME. Our second grandson, Haydn, was born earlier this year and things just clicked and we dove into the book. We hope you enjoyed this book and we are working hard to ensure follow-on books are each published less three months after each one.  Join us for the ride and feel free to leave reviews (important) and email us at bobmayer@coolgus.com with comments, questions, and suggestions. You, the reader, are the most important person in publishing!

10 of 11 people found the following review helpful. Great idea but terrible writing and lack of ending sinks it. By Woolfhound I really wanted to like this more, because the story is really interesting and well paced, but the terrible writing was a constant irritation. I get the feeling the author thinks that writing in sentence fragments makes things edgier, but it doesn't work; it just feels like bad writing. The story kept me reading on a lazy weekend day I'm not trending through more bad prose to find out what happens next.Speaking of which: this is nit the first book in a series. It's part of a book that is apparently being published in serial form. It has no ending whatsoever; it just stops at a crucial point. Pretty disrespectful to readers.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. It definitely is. By Dalice Peterson “It is what it is.” A hymn to fatalism and hopelessness? Or resignation? Once I was thinking about that phrase, I noticed it being used all the time in ordinary conversations. Scary. Mayer and Cavanaugh have done an excellent job of world building in this story. From the use of "burner speak" to the dichotomy between the classes, the story stayed consistent, and believe me, chilling. The horrors of the world were clearly possible human reactions to the problems they faced, and that’s chilling too. No one in this story was who they appeared to be (except maybe Ace the dog) but they were still clearly defined and I ended up caring about what happened to them. There’s more to this story; stay tuned.I received a copy of ‘burners’ for an honest review, so it is what it is.

4 of 5 people found the following review helpful. I love finding a book that I just can't put down By Joseph I love finding a book that I just can't put down. Burners started off a bit slowly, as the characters and background are introduced. As the plot unfolds, I found myself looking for an excuse to read "just one more chapter". By the end of the book, I could not put it down. While the author has a military background and has written many military themed books, I always felt his best work was his Science Fiction. If you have read his Area 51 series, you know what I mean. His Wife co-authored this book, and I have a feeling she might be responsible for making some of the female characters in the book so three demensional. I have read some books in the past where the story was good, but the characters were somewhat forgettable. Burners is one of those books where, after you finish it, you feel you actually knew some of the characters. The Burners world is an interesting and puzzling place, slowly but surely revealing its secrets to the reader.I read a lot, and lately, I have been having trouble finding a book I just can't put down. Burners is one of the few that I could not put down, and may even reread. I am looking forward to the next book in the series.
