Didn't expect to like this but it pulled me in By Emma Rogers Just want to start by saying I'm not a fan of zombie fiction - or at least I didn't used to be. I had this idea in my head of what it would be and it was nothing that I thought I wanted to read. I blame it on too many bad movies in my teens, but I changed my mind when I came across the Love and Decay novella series and then this. It's a Zombie short that is surprisingly poignant, written in such a way that you see beyond the usual horror and gore to the people, the relationships, the hope for the future despite the hopeless situation. If you love Zombie lit then it's absolutely for you. If not then I would definitely recommend you give it a go because it will surprise you and may even change your mind and open you up to a whole new genre. It's free on kindle unlimited at the moment but still good value at the current selling price for those who've not got this.

A mother who was bitten by zombies a day ago is slowly turning into one herself. But who will care for her eight-month-old' when she turns? With no one else to rely on, she ventures forth out of her rural home, hoping to find someone to care for her child before she completely transforms into what she hates the most. As her body and mind slowly deteriorate, she struggles mightily, desperately trying to cling to her humanity to prevent herself from harming her son. It's a grueling and searing portrait of a mother willing to do anything to save her child while resonating with emotional power as she battles her increasingly primeval, baser instincts.I originally read this short story when it was published in The Z Chronicles (The Future Chronicles), an anthology filled with many more excellent zombie stories just like this one! =)
