Enjoyable period piece By John Bonavia If, like me, you enjoy everything to do with the sea and ships, and especially the Royal Navy and associated seagoing vessels of the early nineteenth century, you will love this book. It was published I think in 1865 but is set somewhat earlier. My copy is undated but has owner's inscription dated 1897 - part of "The Boy's Own Favourite Series."Young Neil D'Arcy, the hero, from an Irish family, is orphaned at an early age, but fortunately his care was provided for and he is raised mostly under the care of Larry, the ancient seaman who serves as butler and "general factotum" and his uncle, a Dublin barrister. Determined on a seafaring career, he at first ships on a revenue cutter chasing smugglers in the English Channel - then goes on to many nautical adventures. Romantic interest he has none except a faint "palpitation" in the presence of one attractive young lady - it is supplied vicariously by his friend Vernon who finally marries the woman of his dreams after many separations. The seafaring characters and incidents are well drawn in the simple style of a book for younger readers - that's the difference between Kingston and, say, Captain Marryat.Since the Boys' Own series was considered to be for the "improvement" as much as for the pleasure of its readers, every now and again we are treated to long and earnest philosophical dissertations on the importance of living one's life in accordance with all the Christian virtues. But it is an enjoyable read nonetheless.
