The teachers were not amused and wrote no recommendations. Einstein’s parents anguished over their son’s attitude and his inability to get a good job as almost all his classmates did. Mostly this book is meant to make it clear that science is not just for scientists. It’s a story that stretches through human history impacting all of us. Scientists want to know how the world and its inhabitants function. Over time their inquiries, experiments, and hard work have brought us to the astonishing world we live in. The 22 stories in this book provide a peek at the people and processes that have helped make our universe understandable.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Directed to children but fun for adults By Steve G I received this book for free via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. The purpose of the book, I gather, is to interest younger people in science and I think that it will do this very well. Author Joy Hakim wrote a series of fun, intelligent and very conversational stories that will surely interest children in science. Hakim’s writing is very friendly and even though I have formal science training, I still enjoyed the stories. The major gap in the book is the lack of stories on biology. I know that this book is derived from a series of three books and it can’t have everything in it, but since evolution is central to all of biology, it’s absence is notable. Hakim mentions that unlike physics, biology has no set of central equations, but evolution comes remarkably close. Nonetheless I recommend this book for anyone interested in science who would like a light read or for parent and teachers who want to interest their children in science.

It took a while (we were still adjusting to a recent move) to use it, but I was so happy when we did. The stories are fascinating (even for me) and my kids have loved having it as part of their education. I use it for the 3rd grader (who asks me a ton of questions about the stories-fortunately almost every question is answered by the book), the 6th grader (who asks to do those stories first and will frequently draw pictures to describe the stories), and my 8th grader (who took my kindle fire and read all of them during the first weekend we started it!). I'm so thankful to this book because I feel like it's really important to make children love science for the process and the people and this book gives them this.
