"Always be recruiting.” A must read for building a high-performance team in the tech industry By Nancy Chan I highly recommend this book for anyone who cares about hiring and managing a best-in-class, high-performance team in the tech industry. The book includes actionable recruiting tactics and explains the thought process behind creating an effective hiring strategy so you can establish one that fits your own specific needs. It's particularly useful to anyone who is responsible for taking an early stage company with traction to the next level of growth through talent acquisition. The last few chapters break down the essence of management in a very honest way. The personal stories will remind you that being a manager means making hard decisions, including when to fire someone, and you’ll work through a few exercises to help you understand whether or not that’s a path you want to continue down. Finally, the book reminds you that as a manager you work for your team rather than the other way around. Managers who understand this will set their teams up for success and then get out of the way. Managers who do not will create a layer of bureaucracy, which means a slow death to innovation. It’s a refreshing and inspiring read, and there's plenty to learn from it.

By John Stacey Building, managing, and leading a successful team is one of the hardest, yet most fulfilling pursuits in any realm of business. Josh Tyler's book "Building Great Software Engineering Teams" takes that pursuit and breaks it down into easily understandable and implementable lessons that are intelligently paired with real world examples. Accomplishing that alone is remarkable, but this book does so with both great detail and doses of humor, which made it one of my favorite management reads in recent memory. As the title indicates, this book is definitely geared towards more technical teams (and it does get detailed on that front at times). However, as a manager of a team that does not focus on engineering or design, I can say that this book was still tremendously helpful. Seeing things from a different perspective, and seeing examples from a different environment, can actually be very beneficial, as those different angles help you see and understand problems and lessons that you may not have fully comprehended before (or maybe you thought you did, but you soon realize that there was more to the puzzle).Overall, this book is a great read for anybody that manages, or aspires to manage, a team of humans (regardless of the industry). It is also a book that you can circle back to time and again to gauge the success of both yourself and your team, so I will most definitely be keeping it on my desk as a manual to remind myself of what needs to be done to successfully, and consistently, grow, manage, and lead a successful team.

Nakai Building Great Software Engineering Teams is a hands-on, comprehensive guide to recruiting, hiring, and managing. If you’re looking for candid insight and advice in any of those areas, this is your book. Tyler doesn’t sugarcoat the challenges you’ll face or the mistakes he’s made. He addresses pitfalls head-on and, most importantly, shares valuable strategies for acquiring the talent you want and growing them into the best team members possible.Anecdotes and a conversational tone make this a quick and enjoyable read. But don’t be fooled by the casual writing style -- you’ll come away with actionable items and a detailed strategy to start building a top-notch team.
