2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Lovely! By lizzielou A simple and beautiful story. A great and quick read that leaves you wishing you could stay in that place a little longer.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. An excellent fable! By Bill I loved the clean writing style - you don't get overly detailed descriptions of locations, for example, but fill in the blanks mentally - nice that the author has faith in the reader. And I loved the characters even more - a good book doesn't require you to memorize who's who - you should just know from what they say and do and that happens in FOLD. But what I loved the most was the unpredictable and poetic story. Beautiful.

Beautiful, Just Beautiful By TooManyHobbies I got the 2015 Secret Garden calendar last year, and I was so pleased with it I bought the 2016 version without a second thought. And I wasn't disappointing, the photos in 2016 version are just as pleasing. The colors are bright, and the composition is tranquil and soothing. If you love gardens, this is the perfect calendar to have.

33 of 36 people found the following review helpful. So disappointed this year! By Ohio Woman This calendar has the most obnoxious and annoying purple prose.Example: January: dried hydrangea that retains "their color and fulsome shape like a well-preserved ingenue hitting middle age".How sexist!Instead of identifying all the plants in the picture (which they do not), which is what gardeners want, we have unnecessary garbage written like: "the memory of the last fragrant blooms bidding adieu to summer is a refuge in the darker days to come." Oh, how cheerful to read every day in September. That writer must suffer from depression.Gardeners want to know 1) the location of the photo and 2) all the plants identified, not read nonsense.Workman Press needs to save themselves wasted money and fire these writers that are a liability.I have bought this calendar for years but will no longer. I will recycle the photos of years past, stuck on free calendars that I receive, so I don't have to read for 30 days what I don't want to, like the quote for September 2016: "There were crimson roses on the bench; like splashes of blood."I don't want to read that every day in September and have that image in my brain. I get enough of that in the news.

If you love gardens, their design, vibrant greens and lovely flowers of all colors, this calendar is a delight to look at and I look forward to each new month to savor my next Secret Garden.I bought this calendar for myself for a few years in a row and have even used some of the photos as inspiration for color pallets when decorating and painting the inside of my house. Last year, I bought this calendar for my mother, who was born and raised in England, and is quite discerning when it comes to gardens. She feel in love with the beautiful photos in this calendar too. Simply lovely.

30 of 30 people found the following review helpful. Better than expected! By Amazon Customer I looked at a lot of options before I decided on this one. I was not disappointed. It comes with tons of stickers and tear off notes and to-do slips. There's also a monthly overview from August 2015 to December 2016. Plus, there's a page for every week from now until then. Plenty of space to write everything and anything you might need. I also loved the strap and outside pocket. Wonderful, great brand.

12 of 12 people found the following review helpful. Great for work/life balance By Jessica N. Outstanding weekly planner! It breaks down each day in blocks of time (which you can specify, it isn't predetermined). I'm a mom and a wedding photographer and this planner helps me organize both worlds in one place. I can organize my weekdays of soccer practices and play dates around my weekends of wedding ceremonies and receptions. It's neither too "mommyish" nor is it too sterile or businesslike.I especially appreciate that, when laid open, the planner is broken down by the week (left to right) instead of the typical day-calendar that gives you a few lines to write on or a month calendar that gives you a tiny box to write in. I'll include a photo of the calendar.I also love the 340 tiny stickers at the front that you can add anywhere to remind you to pay bills, go to the gym, date night, nails/hair appt and birthday parties and national holidays. It's a cute and easy way to prevent you from having to write your weekly chores 52 times each.Breakdown: it begins with a pouch for lists or notes. Also, three pages of tiny stickers.Next are full-page months in standard calendar format (the tiny squares to write in). Good for bdays or important events through Dec 2016.Next begins the weekly calender starting July 27th, 2015 and ends finally at Sunday January 1st, 2017.Then a yearly view on one single page for quick reference ("What day of the week is my so-and-so's birthday?") Then a single page list of every holiday imaginable.Next is a front and back page for 12 contacts. I wish it had room for about three times that but oh well, that's what cell phones are for I guess.Next is a page for emergency and medical contacts. A page for service contacts. 3 front and back pages for Notes. Finally, you have 20 front and back pages of tear out shopping lists and To Do lists! Extremely handy if you're a frequent list maker. The inside of the back cover had three skits for business cards. Another extremely useful idea as I'm always getting cards at weddings or from other parents and they end up in my wallet or lost in a pocket. The planner stays shut with an elastic bungee cord :)

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. I am so happy with this planner! By Tonya B I was looking for something that could accommodate my family, blogging, and personal schedules all in one and this did the trick! The segmented weekly pages make it so easy to organize my day. Each weeks' pages are a different color and have an inspirational quote. It's flexible enough to change as my needs change. There is lots of room to write in information on each of the weekly pages. The monthly pages are not as roomy, but it's enough to jot down the big events at a glance. The perforated shopping/to do lists found at the back of the planner were something I didn't expect to use, but they have been SO handy for shopping trips... now I wish there were more! The design is fun and eye-catching. They even included stickers for special days, appointments, and holidays. I suspect I'll be back December 2016 for my next planner! :)

The magnetic is very strong and stays securely on any metal surface; however with the stand, you may have to slightly hold the frame when you tear each page. The saturday and sunday are combined. It has good quality, beautiful puppies pictures, I smile everytime I look at it. However, please note that its very small, approx 3.5 x 3 inches.

Ward I had the kitten calendar for 2015, and had given one as a gift also. I am reordering for 2016 because it was so cute and also so much fun to see each day's picture, and cute sayings on certain pages. I put mine on my refrigerator where I saw it EVERY time I went there. The pages pulled off easily, I only had trouble in that I almost pulled 2 days at a time, but being careful, had no more trouble. I would definitely recommend this for cat or dog lovers......although it IS small, the pictures are good quality. it says Mini (about 3") but worth the money ($4.99 at Amazon).

The classic history of Western civilization By A Customer Gibbon's work is simply the best history of any period ever written in the English language. His prose is fluid and musical, his research into the authentic source materials exhaustive and complete, and his mastery of the elements of structure and pace make his exposition eminently lucid. In short, his history combines all the elements required of historical prose: it is precise, accurate, and readable. And in addition to all this, Gibbon has given us a history of one of the most important, but least well understood periods of transition in Western civilization: bridging the gap from the end of classical antiquity to the beginning of the Renaissance. I highly recommend this masterpiece to anyone interested in the history of Europe. Whether you are an expert or a novice you will find this work both greatly entertaining and informative. A must have in any serious library!

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Among the best prose in the English language. By Patrick Shadrick I am still on volume one, and am astonished by the quality of prose. Keep an open internet connection handy to google words however. Some are antique and not currently in usage. This fellow is among the best writers I have ever read. Clive James, Hitchens, Orwell, Huxley, and any historical writer is in debt to Gibbons.

A book called, "How to Not Have Your Eyes Glaze Over While Not One But Two Husbands Talk About Ancient Rome." That's right. I've been through this twice. You know, I ought to write that book. I bet it'd be spectacular. Wowza, I better call Random House--I've got a winner. Maybe I can do it cosmetics-cop emoji rating style with smilies, frowns, and maybe that little thing that looks like poo but not tacky like real poo. Like Caligula, he would TOTALLY get one of those little crappy emojis.Honestly, this is the one you want. Cause my husband said so. He is The Man. He knows. He says Womersley is the best editor. And when he gets done reading this, he works on his Lego collection. It's the ying, and the yang. Dead Romans, little plastic stormtroopers. Livin' the dream, baby.

Fifteen years have passed since mankind discovered its first portal, a type of wormhole capable of instantaneous travel between two distinct points around the globe. No two portals had ever appeared in the same location twice and predicting where or when one would appear proved impossible. But despite their inexplicable appearance on planet Earth, portals were quickly embraced by those powerful enough to discover and maintain control of their awesome potential. Harnessing them without thought to their origin or worry over the consequences of their use, sects of humanity prospered while others faltered. Empires fell, empires grew more powerful, and newcomers were welcomed to the world stage. The geo-political, social, and military landscape across the globe shifted as portals opened new avenues for travel, trade, and warfare, but only those able to hold a portal prospered. Everyone else was left behind. Thus began the Age of Portals. Today, portals are accepted by humanity as unassumingly as concepts such as gravity or oxygen. They are ubiquitous all across the world, yet additional portals are always sought after. New portals mean new opportunities, but just as no one foresaw their arrival, the world will not be ready for what is still to come. One man, whose sole desire to discover new portals is the only thing left that drives him, stands alone along this oncoming path, but is unprepared for what he, and the rest of the world, will soon face. Review "I felt that Rachael was even stronger and wiser in this book and I love how protective she is of her brother." - Iva Kenaz (author of My Melancholic Diary)

About the Author Born into a military family, Deidre bounced around a couple states in her life before finally settling in the one she grew up: Washington. Her many passions are torn amongst writing, urban fantasy, mythology, true crime, and spending quality time with her temperamental cat. Without video games, she would probably have lost her mind years ago. Currently she works full-time and can only write on the side, but she pursues it in what free time she can scrape together.

By Medusatroll --Free book in exchange for an honest review--This story follows Rachael, a precocious young woman who's brother has finally returned after having been turned in to a lycan. Because her brother, Jackson, is still in the training stage, some of his more horrifying lycan abilities are still yet uncontrolled and he is being blamed for the death of a young girl, and several missing children in the town. But before he can be ceremoniously killed by the head lycan, Aaron, Rachel pleads for time to find evidence in her brother's favor. She is given a week, but its not a lot of time, and much of it is spent separating Aaron and her love interest, Holden, from gnawing at each other's throats. This novel is a very good character development read. Though I do find there was more action and definite page turners in her first novel "Howl of the Sequoia," this book allows the reader to delve deeper in to her characters.I really wish there was an option to do four and a half stars, because its very refreshing to read a novel where you are always unsure who the bad guy is. Each character is fully developed, and has both sadness, anger, a grudge, or things that happened in their past that fully justify the way they are acting now. So the tension is always palpable because you're never sure who you are rooting for, because they all have redeeming qualities or hindering qualities. The clan of lycans hold strongly to their beliefs and i'm reminded of the deep moral complications that plague them and such mythological creatures that have a different mindset in a human world. The only reason I removed a star was because of the pace of the story. It definitely drags, but this isn't uncommon with a story that tries to inform you in depth of the characters, and it does have a killer ending that leaves you waiting for the next installment. All in all, if you are a fan of stories like 'Interview with a Vampire' were the book brings you in to the mind frame of a society that has different rules and regulations that might be construed as terrifying or immoral, than this story will definitely appeal to you!Regardless of your preference, you'll still really like this book!

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. I also like that the main antagonist By SacredGeometryBlog Having read the first book of the series, I was very curious to continue with this story. The Secrets in the Fade starts off two years after the end of Howl of the Sequoia. After Rachael’s mom passed away and her brother Jackson became lycan and disappeared, Rachael’s father is angry with him, thinking he has abandoned his family in the hardship. But Rachael knows what he’s been going through and worries about him. After Jackson finally returns, Rachael is grateful to Aaron, who has been taking care of him, despite the fact that he caused the trouble in the first place. Tension between Aaron and Rachael’s love-interest, Holden culminates, and even more so when they all find Jackson beside a dead body in the woods…The situation between Rachel, Aaron and Holden seems to develop into a love-triangle, but on a very subtle level, which I find interesting. I also like that the main antagonist, Aaron is such a multidimensional character. On one hand he’s still the bad guy, but on the other he’s nice to Jackson and Rachel…He has depth to him, and good heart, or so it seems. However, as Holden said at one point, maybe he’s fooling the other characters and us, the readers alongside? Who knows who the enemy really is here...Nevertheless, I hope they’ll all do the right thing in the end.I felt that Rachael was even stronger and wiser in this book and I love how protective she is of her brother. I think the author did a great job with this installment and I look forward to read another book in the series.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Gads By J You know the heroine that cries all the time and wines? That kind that wants her own way and is considered pushy with not much intelligence? Rachel is this type. She so annoys me. I gave the first book in this series a four star rating even though Rachel was a cry baby because of the interesting storyline and characters this SQL did not captivate me and I eventually skipped around to speed it up. Where Rachel love interest towards the end is not the way I'd like it to be. I'm not reading anymore but I hope Rachel grows up fast and annoys readers less.

From School Library Journal PreS—Like Katz's ABC, Baby Me! (Scholastic, 2010), ABC School's for Me! uses the alphabet to carry readers through the rhyming text. A preschool class of young bear friends learns the alphabet, colors, traces, hears stories, plays, crafts, and cooperates throughout the day. Colorful yet soft illustrations convey warm, friendly, and fun thoughts about school. Adult readers can help young children explore the details of the illustrations to uncover various activities, emotions, and personalities that they may experience in preschool. VERDICT A furry and fun introduction to the preschool experience.—Lindsay Persohn, University of South Florida, Tampa

I got it for my nieces and they're completely in love with the illustrations, and with the rhyme. It's rare to read rhyme that doesn't sacrifice fluidity for fun, and this book's got both, and then some. A beautiful read, and a truly wonderful way to introduce the alphabet to little ones. GREAT WORK to both Ms. Katz and Ms. Munsinger.

By Dianne Foster I bought this book a while back when my granddaughter Rita became interested in Conures. I thought we were going to get a Conure for her, but we ended up buying a Cockatiel and Grandma got the Conure. I have four Cockatiels and they are the sweetest birds, so I thought the best pet for a child (Rita is a responsible 12-year old) might not be a Conure, as they are described as being somewhat vocal.I discovered a Blue-Crested (Crowned) Conure in need of a home at my local bird store and became fascinated with him. Vinnie, as he is known, had been previously owned by an older woman who could no longer care for him. He is a sweet bird and he talks, so I having read Ms Watkins book decided to give it a whirl, and I brought him home. Now I can honestly say that a Conure can be as sweet as a Cockatiel. He makes some noises like a Crow, but I have three barking Poms, so he is mild in comparison (and he's learned to bark).THE CONURE HANDBOOK by Anne Watkins has proved a goldmine for this impulsive bird owner. Watkins explains how to choose a new baby or do what I did, and look for an older Conure who exhibits good traits (including healthy). The idea that the only bird you can have is a newborn ain't necessarily so. Some older birds for sale or adoption have been put into care because their former owners simply could not take care of them anymore.MY new Conure Vinnie is getting along well with my "shelter" Cockatiels, and I use Ms Watkins book to inform me about foods Vinnie can eat as well as other requirements. The book is filled with easy to read text and many photos of the various members of the Conure species. Based on my experience, I am thinking I may purchase more and different buddies.

Therres This is a very informative book on conures that explains everything that you will ever need to know about conures - from what to feed - how to treat them - how to tame - how to teach them to talk. I would use these book over any other book. I ordered other books and wouldn't use any other. This is the book to use.

The information given was on the basics like feeding, housing, illnesses; what to watch out for. Foods, do's and don'ts....DON'T feed your conure avocado, it will kill your bird! I wouldn't have known this if I didn't research. I highly recommend this book if you are considering owning any type of conure!GREAT BOOK with GREAT INFO!

In this coloring book, they offer a fun history of the paisley design and then show examples of the designs in the book in color for inspiration. I enjoy coloring in it while I watch television or before bed at night, I find the patterns to be soothing and it’s always really relaxing for me. There are also color bars in the back to help prepare a palette before moving forward. I like that each page has the design just on one side and they are all perforated for easy removal. I also love to give these books as gifts with a pack of colored pencils or gel pens.

I spent a ridiculous amount of time at Barnes & Noble flipping through every adult coloring book they had. I wanted something with pretty designs that weren't too childish and was neither too simple or complicated. I wanted a book with perforated pages and nice, heavy paper as I use watercolor paints. This book was perfect! To make it even better, it has a brief history of the designs in the front, small samples of the designs colored for inspiration (although I thought most of their color combinations were a bit drab) and an area in the back of the book designed to test out color combinations. It seems they've thought of everything. I definitely will be purchasing other books in the series! On a side note, the pricing for these books is pretty much the same anywhere - on-line or in the store everywhere I've seen them.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. okay, not awesome By dodoburd I love paisley patterns which is why I purchased this book. I am a little disappointed in the quality of the paper though. I usually buy hardbound adult coloring books with heavy weight paper...which is what I will continue to do in the future.

Wonderful Christmas-inspired designs and great heavyweight perforated paper By iiiireader This is a wonderful set of coloring designs by a company that is new to me, Peter Pauper Press. Based on the quality of this book, I will certainly be purchasing more of their books in the future. There are 31 Christmas related designs with lots of Santas, stockings, ornaments, poinsettias, candles, birds, and even a figgie pudding! The designs range from fairly easy to color to much more complex. The pages are a wonderful heavyweight of bright white. This is fantastic as my pencils, gel pens, and ultra fine markers (except for Sharpies) do not bleed through on this paper. The designs are printed on only one side with the back side left blank, so if you are using alcohol based markers or watercolors, you can put an extra page in between just in case some color leaches through. The pages are perforated and are extremely easy to remove. The paper is also acid-free which means that the paper will not turn colors with age and all the work you put into coloring the designs will be safe. Additionally, the binding easily lies flat and gives you access to make coloring in this book and easy and fun thing to do.It is a lovely book that puts me right in the holiday spirit. It will be fun to pull this book out and color into the evening – with maybe some spiced cider close beside to make the holidays a fun part of my relaxing coloring time.

Some of them are a little TOO intricate for me, but I know for some people that would be a plus. Thick, one-sided paper with perforated edges, so you can color in the book or tear the pages out.

The only con is many of the lines are extremely bold. This may not be a problem with those who use markers or gel pens. I prefer colored pencils which will get lost in all the black.

From New York Times bestselling author Rachel Vincent comes a richly imagined, provocative new series set in the dark mythology of the Menagerie…

When Delilah Marlow visits a famous traveling carnival, Metzger's Menagerie, she is an ordinary woman in a not-quite-ordinary world. But under the macabre circus black-top, she discovers a fierce, sharp-clawed creature lurking just beneath her human veneer. Captured and put on exhibition, Delilah is stripped of her worldly possessions, including her own name, as she's forced to "perform" in town after town.

But there is breathtaking beauty behind the seamy and grotesque reality of the carnival. Gallagher, her handler, is as kind as he is cryptic and strong. The other "attractions"—mermaids, minotaurs, gryphons and kelpies—are strange, yes, but they share a bond forged by the brutal realities of captivity. And as Delilah struggles for her freedom, and for her fellow menagerie, she'll discover a strength and a purpose she never knew existed.

Renowned author Rachel Vincent weaves an intoxicating blend of carnival magic and startling humanity in this intricately woven and powerful tale.

I loved it, and look forward to much more in the future from this talented author."-New York Times bestselling author Heather Graham"Compelling and edgy, dark and evocative, Stray is a must read! I loved it from beginning to end." -New York Times bestselling author Gena Showalter on Stray"This is the kind of book that ups the ante in teen literature. The characters are true to life in a way not often captured by YA authors; Vincent writes dialogue as if she spends her days haunting the hallways of her local high school. The love triangle is fantastic... This plot is driven by more relatable impulses: love, friendship, jealousy."-RT Book Reviews on My Soul to Steal"Vincent does a nice job of balancing all the various species of character...with dollops of humor and enough backstory to keep readers new to the series engaged, without dousing the pace for those already in the know."-Booklist on If I Die"A well-thought-out vision of werecat social structure as well as a heroine who insists on carving her own path, even if it means breaking some of her society's most sacred taboos."-Library Journal on Rogue"Blood Bound offers a little something for everyone: a convincing magical system for urban fantasy fans; for romance readers, a love that time and distance can't break; and a twist-and-turn plot for mystery buffs."-Shelf Awareness on Blood Bound

No apologies. If you all were watching my Twitter and Goodreads feeds on Tursday (August 18th), you saw my slight meltdown/very strong reaction to what I had read so far at that point. At only a fourth into the book, I was horrified and disgusted, and very, very disturbed. I was on the verge of putting this one down for good (and I NEVER stop reading a book I start), putting a note on NetGalley explaining my failure to finish, and move on with my life.Obviously that wasn't the outcome with this book. I went one to read another 50%, and called it a night at 75%. I finished up this book on Wednesday at work. I've decided that I absolutely LOVED the second half of the book, but the first half really marred the book overall. So, three stars! This is my first Rachel Vincent novel (adult or YA), and while I didn't completely love it, I'm glad I stuck it out and muscled through this one.Delilah is a seemingly normal woman, with a boring boyfriend and great friends and a loving mom. When Delilah, her boyfriend, and two friends go to Metzger's Menagerie, the carnival of beasts, including a Minotaur, sirens, werewolves, etc. While there, she sees one of the handlers goading one a werewolf girl, and Delilah reacts. By sinking her claws into the handler. Claws? What claws? It turns out, Delilah is one of those creatures, though no one knows what kind. She is bought by Metzger's, and she is stripped of all human rights she used to enjoy. But Delilah starts to get to know the other "attractions" of the carnival, and she finds that she wants to help them, despite not being able to help herself. Delilah may be imprisoned, bruised, abused, but she discovers something about herself that she never knew, and will stop at nothing to get her freedom back and win the freedom of all the others.See my notes below on the first half of the book. It was ROUGH. However, once I got past the things that were disturbing and horrifying - human captivity, forced labor/slavery, sexual harassment, torture, abuse, etc. - I started to get into the story. I feel like a complete psycho for saying "once I got past _______" (i.e. horrible things), but at some point around the 50%, I guess I got desensitized? No, that's not true. At 75%, I was like, okay, things have gotten even more disturbing. But also really intriguing and slightly hopeful! The tone of this book is incredibly dark and hopeless, emphasis on the "hopeless" part for at least two-thirds of the book, maybe three-fourths. While I absolutely hated seeing Delilah tortured and abused the way she was, I have to say, Vincent did an incredible job of writing this tone and showing the brutality of this particular world. I felt just abut as enraged and panicked and filled with despair as Delilah, which shows how well Vincent dug into the character and the story! The world-building is incredible, though as I keep saying, it is disturbing. In this world, humans are afraid of surrogates, human-looking monsters. They're afraid of monsters and creatures in general. Delilah has no rights as whatever she is, not even to her clothes. One of the most disturbing scenes was when she had to strip in front of the handlers. Male handlers who were looking in more than one way - not just to see what she is. She is always chained, so any handler can do whatever he wants with her. You see what I'm saying about disturbing? I have to hand it to Vincent though, she really wrote this well. Disturbing, but the world-building is so exquisitely crafted. The carnival has all the mystique and appeal, but behind the scenes, it is a hopeless and cruel place.Again, the world-building is spot-on. Despite the fact that I struggled with how disturbing things were (see below), I have to say, the world-building was so well done. I couldn't have been so disturbed if the author had toned it down, right?I really like Delilah, so so much. She finds out she isn't human by sinking claws into his head, and then gets arrested, and then stripped, and then sold, and then has to do humiliating things like strip again, eat disgusting meat, live in a teeny tiny cage, hold her bladder for days. One handler takes every opportunity he can to abuse her in some way, and my heart broke every time. This is why I couldn't keep reading - I hated seeing Delilah suffer, her dignity lost, pride on its way. The thing is, Delilah kept struggling. She kept fighting. She never let them break her, though they hurt her over and over. Delilah is determined, even if she knows no way to escape. Her main handler is Gallagher, who was there when she was bought for Metzger's. He isn't cruel and abusive, and he goes out of his way to protect her and not to hurt her. Of course Delilah suspects the worst - how could she not? He wants something from her, right? Gallagher is actually a decent person. When you read this book, stay on his side and cheer him on! I lived for the scenes between him and Delilah. There is nothing romantic going on (yet???), no hints, but they seem to know each other without knowing, understand each other on some level. I love Gallagher and I love his role in this novel. He is critical to this story, don't underestimate him!The tone gets a little more hopeful as we slowly start to know Gallagher and his mind. I can't say too much, but I am happy with the direction of the plot after we finally figure out more and more about Gallagher - and Delilah. The two of them are a great pair, and I felt better about the story, knowing that they were on the same side. The ending is excellent! I am pleased with the ending, even if it ended a bit twisted. Maybe I really am a psychopath. In any case, the ending could have been much worse, so I appreciate that reprieve. I don't think my heart could have taken any more! What I Did Not Like:Clearly I liked a lot of things about this book. But it took me a looooong time to appreciate those things. The world-building? I HATED it initially. This book is disturbing on so many levels. I hated seeing Delilah go from average human to less than dirt. Suddenly, it doesn't matter if she's naked, or cold, or scared, or has a human appearance, or can speak. What matters is that she is a cryptid (creature), and once they figure out what she is, they can start breeding her (oh, yes). This part almost made me sick - but not to worry, this isn't a part of the story for Delilah. This is introduced with another character. There were so many disturbing scenes in this book. I wanted to shred Clyde (a handler) for abusing Delilah. She is always chained, and of course, it's really easy to do things to a person who is chained. Everyone treats Delilah like filth (with the exception of the other cryptids), so they think they can do anything with her. This broke my heart, over and over. You see why I was disturbed? One thing you don't need to worry about is rape, in terms of Delilah. Not ruling it out for other characters. There are mentions of forced breeding and rape, FYI. Also violence. Hence my adult warning at the beginning of the book. It's mostly because of the violence in this book.Still, like I previously said, Vincent did a great job with making this book so incredibly disturbing. But... it hurt. One of the secondary characters, Genni, is the absolute worst off. But if Vincent had made this book lighter on all the torture and abuse and captivity treatment and whatnot, it wouldn't have been as powerful a novel. One thing that I didn't understand was the newspaper articles and snippets, at the beginning of each perspective/chapter (by the way, there are many perspectives, all in third person, except's Delilah's, in first person). I don't know what they contribute to the story. They're about the scare with cryptids and surrogates that occurred years ago, but they don't seem to add to the plot. Perhaps foreshadowing? Or world-building? I'm not sure. I started to skip them after a while. So, once you "get used to" the disturbing stuff, you'll enjoy the story. The faster you can stomach it (and Vincent has it going for more than half the book), the easier the book gets to read. It was NOT an easy read, by any means. *clutches tatters of heart*Would I Recommend It:You know, despite my rating, it does seem like I enjoyed the book, right? I hope I can convince someone to read this one, and not dissuade (although, if you can't handle the disturbing stuff I mentioned above, definitely SKIP this book). I want you all to know my issues with this book, and while they marred the rating and enjoyment for me, I'm glad I picked up this novel. Vincent fans will probably like this one (how would I know, I've never read any of her other novels!), but anyone who doesn't mind dark, sinister, and disturbing fantasy set in a modern-day world will be intrigued and captured by this novel. ADULT BOOK, OKAY?!Rating:3.5 stars -> rounded down to 3 stars. Definitely on the positive end of 3 stars. But I can't give this novel 4 stars, knowing just how much I struggled with it for about half the book, even a little more than that. It is my first Vincent novel and hopefully the sequel will be my next one. Although I am totally scared of the sequel... if it's anything as disturbing as this book, I might need therapy!

Rachel Vincent brings us a new and enchanting series that is bound to be epic beyond all reason! Menagerie is a unique blend of paranormal and contemporary and shows us the darker side of menagerie settings where the participants are nothing more than prisoners. The world here is also unique in that it's aware of the less than human residents hiding throughout. There was an event in the 80s that's touched on for history purposes and basically it results in all these paranormal beings being seen as monsters. Though they look human, none are treated as such. It's almost a blessing, for the paranormal, to be killed because there are far worse punishments than death. Other punishments involve being hunted down like animals in game parks, being used and abused in less than savory environments, or being sold to a menagerie.Delilah has never enjoyed seeing the cryptids, aka the paranormal beings, being abused in the ways that society inflects on them. At one point, she wanted to be a cryptid-vet and help to take care of them, but when she learned that that position involved more torturing and studying then caring, she quickly dropped her studies and resigned herself to being a bank teller. Going to a menagerie for her birthday wasn't the best gift her boyfriend could provide, but since tickets are expensive, she felt obligated to attend with him and her friends. It was at this menagerie when something unthinkable happened and Delilah is exposed as being a cryptid of some kind. We were aware of this prior to the event happening, though only in the vaguest sense of the word. And Delilah was completely unaware of her secret identity, and learning that she isn't quite human was a devastating blow. She loses all rights she had as a human, and her friends and boyfriend completely abandon her. Before long, she becomes the newest attraction in the menagerie where she was in attendance and she sees a different side to the way things are. The handlers who once seemed to care for the cryptids are abusive and cruel. Delilah sees all this brute torture happening around her and is even abused herself, but there's simply nothing that can be done.Delilah's handler, Gallagher, though, is different from the rest. He's a very mysterious sort of guy and I found him to be very intriguing. You almost expect to see a relationship form between him and Delilah a la Stockhom, but yet, it doesn't. I could see something happening farther down the line though. But for this book, there was zero romance involved. But there's definitely the potential for some to happen eventually. We'll just have to see how things go.I've always been a huge fan of Rachel's books and Menagerie was definitely one her most finest! It's far different from her past series, but that's what I found so intriguing about it. The pacing isn't as fast as I would've hoped for, but the slower pace allowed the characters to develop and the we also get a better understanding of our surroundings and the how serious the situation is. So despite a slower paced read, I still found myself enjoying every minute of it!One of the things that did make things a bit more complicated in it was the change of narrator. For the most part we get Delilah's first person point of view, but every now and then, we'd get to see the point of view from another cryptid or handler or occasionally Gallagher. While those were enjoyable, at times I felt the shift was so sudden. True, they were differentiated by chapter markers, but it did cause the occasional slip-up for me in where I stumbled to change tracks and see what this new character was seeing! The ending to this one was all sorts of chaotic! I don't want to give away anything, but it's definitely one of those things where the heroine's plans seem to be moving smoothly and then they all fall apart again and again! So simply put, chaos! I definitely wonder what those final outcomes will result in. Because there several unexpected happenstances that were the proverbial wrench in the plan! Needless to say, I am hooked on this series!! I can't wait to see what Rachel will do next with this new cast of characters! If you're looking for a new read filled incredible characters and a deliciously built world setting that really digs into the nit and gritty of the menagerie scene, then this is the read for you! Menagerie is a darkly, seductive read that will keep you captivated until the very end and left longing for the next installment!Overall Rating 4.5/5 stars

It’s a story quite like no other with its unusual array of interesting and exotic characters. It’s a story that will break your heart, will make you think, and will make you rail against the injustice toward, and inhumane treatment of, the beautiful and terrifying and extraordinary creatures that make up the menagerie.Author Rachel Vincent invites readers into a world that is dark and intriguing, strange and seductive and spellbinding, harsh and heartbreaking, vicious and cruel. And she gives them a glimpse of what life is really like behind the scenes of Metzger’s Menagerie for its reluctant performers. When Delilah Marlow first visited Metzger’s Menagerie she was both captivated and repulsed by what she saw. Years later when the show was back in town she found herself just as drawn to the beasts, the oddities, the spectacle. But an act of cruelty toward one of its young and helpless performers enraged Delilah in a way she hadn’t ever been before, revealing to her, her friends, and everyone who witnessed her transformation that she is not so different from the curiosities in the menagerie they’d come to gawk at.Finding out she was not human and that the life she had planned was no longer possible was devastating. Being taken into captivity and forced to make sense of a power she hadn’t even known she had in order to perform for the menagerie was an absolute nightmare. One without end, unless she could find a way to use her power to escape her captors and flee to a place where she could exist, undetected, and live free from persecution.MENAGERIE isn’t a story for the faint of heart. It doesn’t tread lightly when it reveals the barbaric conditions the captives are forced to endure. It tackles all of its very real and relatable issues head on. It will give readers plenty of food for thought - about human nature, about fear-based actions, about a human’s capacity for cruelty, about what makes someone human. It will give them characters to love, to root for, to sympathize with. It will show them how important that hope, the will to survive, and a fighting spirit can be in the face of heartlessness, insensitivity, oppression, barbarity.Rachel Vincent has proven herself a masterful and inventive writer with this brilliant and heartrending first installment in her new series. MENAGERIE is amazing and wonderful and disturbing and touching and an absolutely riveting and insanely good read.
