From School Library Journal Gr 9 Up—Kranz's debut novel immerses readers in the lives of two young adults overcoming tragedy. Rachel's loss of her brother, Curtis, leaves her searching for answers. When the police come to speak with her, her curiosity intensifies. She needs to know if it was his Down Syndrome, her decision to have him ride alone, or a malfunction that caused Curtis to die on that roller-coaster. Ethan lost his brother, Jason, to the sea, supposedly after falling into the ocean. While tagging property gives Ethan a purpose, he needs more. Like Rachel, Ethan is trying to find the truth or a reason why this happened. Through their own adventures and the friends they make along the way, the protagonists are able to find the answers they desperately crave. Kranz introduces many characters and story lines and ties them all together. Some confusion may occur because the identity of the narrator is unclear for a while, but it all makes sense at the book's conclusion. VERDICT A great read for teens who enjoy mysteries and intriguing, well-developed characters.—Jessica Strefling, Pepperdine School of Law Library, CA
Review “A dry mystery, an interracial relationship, and a quiet struggle against provincial tyranny make for a choppy-but-promising debut.” ―Kirkus Reviews

Summer is a Promise That Can't Be Kept By Tilia Klebenov Jacobs Jonathan Kranz's debut novel pushes together two teenagers, Ethan and Rachel, who both lost their brothers in connection with Happy World, the ironically named seaside amusement park in their town. As they search for the truth about these seemingly unrelated tragedies, they uncover guilt and complicity, truth and cowardice, and the true nature of the town they thought they knew. Kranz's sharp characterizations and adroit plotting make this a masterful read.

By Mark Irving As a teacher of teens, I seek to find books with strong characters, intricate and skillfully planned plot development, and prose that carries the readers into the world described among the pages. I was more than pleasantly surprised to find my requirements within "Our Brothers at the Bottom of the Bottom of the Sea". I also found a sensitive look at human relationships in an aptly described friendship of the two protagonists; and sensitivity to issues ranging from disability to death and grieving. The mystery is enough to keep any teen intrigued from beginning to end and the description of the oceanside small town carnival setting feels tangible. My students will be reading this novel.

You Haven't Been to this Jersey Shore By Juleen Gantley Every magical place, like this novel’s Sea Town, New Jersey, has a story below the surface—in this case, behind the theme parks, beneath the water. Like a false front, the theme park conceals real lives and real tragedies. People and place make this story both real and surreal by revealing the secret thoughts of some and the scurrilous motivations of others. Lives come together through tragedy in Our Brothers at the Bottom of the Bottom of the Sea. The deaths of two young people, which are seemingly unconnected, are central to this novel; the two unrelated siblings who investigate the tragedies grow closer together as the mystery unfurls. In Our Brothers at the Bottom of the Bottom of the Sea, the notion of family stretches—the reader sees that “family” can even be comprised of a group of vulnerable teens. Tragedies are not forgotten and closure proves impossible and even unimportant. But investigation and answers help these brave young people move forward, toward recovery. Grief is just one theme in Our Brothers at the Bottom of the Bottom of the Sea—maturation, tenacity, emergent young love, hope, and justice round out the themes in this beautifully written, often poetic, young adult novel. As a coauthor of a book on adoption, as a mother and grandmother, I highly recommend this novel.
