Best Ebook Rational Points on Elliptic Curves (Undergraduate Texts in Mathematics), by Joseph H. Silverman, John T. Tate

The theory of elliptic curves involves a pleasing blend of algebra, geometry, analysis, and number theory. This volume stresses this interplay as it develops the basic theory, thereby providing an opportunity for advanced undergraduates to appreciate the unity of modern mathematics. At the same time, every effort has been made to use only methods and results commonly included in the undergraduate curriculum. This accessibility, the informal writing style, and a wealth of exercises make Rational Points on Elliptic Curves an ideal introduction for students at all levels who are interested in learning about Diophantine equations and arithmetic geometry.

Most concretely, an elliptic curve is the set of zeroes of a cubic polynomial in two variables. If the polynomial has rational coefficients, then one can ask for a description of those zeroes whose coordinates are either integers or rational numbers. It is this number theoretic question that is the main subject of Rational Points on Elliptic Curves. Topics covered include the geometry and group structure of elliptic curves, the Nagell–Lutz theorem describing points of finite order, the Mordell–Weil theorem on the finite generation of the group of rational points, the Thue–Siegel theorem on the finiteness of the set of integer points, theorems on counting points with coordinates in finite fields, Lenstra's elliptic curve factorization algorithm, and a discussion of complex multiplication and the Galois representations associated to torsion points. Additional topics new to the second edition include an introduction to elliptic curve cryptography and a brief discussion of the stunning proof of Fermat's Last Theorem by Wiles et al. via the use of elliptic curves.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Great entry ticket into the subject matter for the non-graduate level mathematician By RKL In theory, I should be pretty good at math... but I chose CS as my calling instead of math. Alas, given the importance of elliptic curve cryptography, I thought it is about time that I read up on the subject. Not having gone into any graduate level math of any type, this subject proved quite challenging -- until I discovered this book. OK, so it isn't rigorous in terms of proving everything. But for the reader interested in self-study and looking for an entry ticket, this book is the answer. When I finish, I will decide whether to pursue a more rigorous treatment. But to get started, this is a great "intro". (I put that in quotes because it still requires quite an investment.)

Intuitive explanations and examples make it an extremely quick, efficient way to gear up for Logic X's new and improved features. Along with the cogent support offered on Logicprohelp.com's forums, David's contributions to the Logic community are highly appreciated.

6 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Great Book, bad timing on the new version release By -tg The content is super great and the presentation is also. However, 10.2 came out just as I received the book and there are a lot of updates to be made to perform 10.1 drills with 10.2 on your computer. The author has created all of the errata to update the book, and there is a lot of updating, but I'm left wishing that there is a Logic Pro X 10.2 book instead. In all fairness, if a 10.2 book is available, 10.3 may be released and we may be back where we started. It seems that Logic Pro X version releases and How-To books are just not well coordinated.

The Southern States were settled by three great waves of emigration, -Cavalier, Scotch-Irish and Huguenot. - These types retain their characteristics to this day, perhaps, largely, because groups of relatives, friends or neighbors settled in one section and gave a dominant tinge in creed, and church, and custom. The sons and daughters of these families married, and creed and custom grew stronger from year to year. Thus the Scotch-Irish, a people of Scotch origin, though living in Ireland for many years before the American emigration, settled in certain parts of Virginia, North and South Carolina, and, what is now, East Tennessee, in great numbers and impressed their Presbyterian faith upon their posterity. In the chapters of this book examples will be given of each of these groups-Cavalier, Scotch-Irish and Huguenot. The early history of these well-known Southern families is here presented, being published, at least in collected form, for the first time. The compiler takes no credit for authorship, as genealogy is not a science of invention. The facts, however, are clearly stated, and in the case of each family each line may be brought down to the present day from the earliest settler in America. The Colonial, Revolutionary, War of 1812 and War Between the States record of each family is set forth succinctly. No space has been given to tradition, though many traditions in the families mentioned are interesting and doubtless could be followed up and proved. Many histories have been consulted and many family documents studied, only reliable records being used. Though the chief endeavor of these chapters is to show the Colonial or Revolutionary settler and his posterity, a brief line of his progenitors is given in some cases, as the origin of name and family is always interesting. Hundreds of histories, court records and family documents have been examined in the preparation of this volume, and the following family authorities have been consulted: Robert A. J. Armstrong, Mrs. Martha Turnley Armstrong, Mrs. Penelope J. Allen (who prepared the Deadrick and VanDyke data), Pearson Banning (who prepared the Banning data), Mrs. Virginia E. McNaught (who prepared the Gaines data), Mrs. Louise Sevier Giddings, Mrs. J. F. Alexander, S. G. Heiskell, Calvin M. McClung (who prepared the McGhee data), John A. Kelly, the late Parmenas Taylor Turnley, John Bell Brownlow (who prepared the Brownlow data), the late Oscar K. Lyle, and many others. This volume, Volume I, includes genealogies of the following families: Armstrong, Banning, Blount, Brownlow, Calhoun, Deaderick, Gaines, Howard, Key, Luttrell, Lyle, McAdoo, McGhee, McMillan, Phinizy, Polk, Sevier, Shields, Stone, Turnley, and VanDyke.

[[VIDEOID:58fd3a3eb537e72ef81df022bf3dac7f]]A big fun book filled with all sorts of colorful projects that are doable by every level of crafter. There is an extensive tutorial section that shows how versatile the Mod Podge line of products are. I am especially excited about the tutorial on how you can create a sheet of Mod Podge and paint that can be cut and applied to glass. Whatever your style of home dec or personal accessories you will find a wealth of inspiration in these pages.

It seemed like a wonderful product to me that you could use for just about anything. The way this book defines it, is an “all-in-one glue, sealer, and finish”, which makes sense. The book starts out with an interesting history and product profiles of all the types of Mod Pdoge (way more than I knew they had) and what crafts they are each best suited for. They have gathered projects from many different designers, which results in over 90 varied projects and I enjoyed seeing the different styles and ideas. I love the glittery confetti bowls made using balloons, and I’ve even used it to add some sparkle to jeans. I want to make the dressed up Halloween pumpkins made with fabric in the Fall, they look amazing. There’s lots of ideas I can’t wait to try, I really like the casting technique, where Mod Podge is combined with paint and added to glassware to create a stained glass effect. So pretty!

Review Mrs. Twead wrote a marvelous prequel to her series, and yes, more are needed. It was so cool to read about her childhood and her parents. She is a wonderful writer, and I do enjoy reading her books.  -- Vine Voice.

About the Author Victoria Twead is a New York Times and Wall Street Journal bestselling author. In 2004 she nagged poor, long-suffering Joe into leaving Britain and relocating to a tiny, remote mountain village in Andalucía, where they became reluctant chicken farmers and owned the most dangerous cockerel in Spain.

Having several best sellers amongst her previous books, doesn't automatically mean that a new book (and a prequel at that) will have the same interest as the author's previous books. I have to say, this is definitely one to be enjoyed, prequel or not, as it holds it's own against the award winning books that preceded it. Memories are interesting things, are they our memories locked into our conscious recall or are they the memories planted into our consciousness by the discussion of the people around us, recalling people, events and places? It really doesn't matter. The author has a wonderful way of setting a scene with descriptive language that begins the step-building, with the full scaffold finally creating the scene in the reader's mind. The different personalities of the characters are portrayed with exquisite detail. The nuances of their actions and language leave the reader becoming fully empathic with their behaviours. To read a book and laugh out loud, much to the consternation of those sharing the same room, indicates that the author has achieved their goal of a fascinating insight into life, as a child, and young person and as an adult. The wonderful use of language making for brilliant descriptions and offering superb comic timing, is not something that many authors manage to achieve, especially in a Memoir. True to her previous books, I believe the author has another winner in her prequel. I highly recommend this book . . . the only discussion I am still having in my mind is which book should be read first, the Old Fools Series or the prequel. For me, I'm pleased to have read the Old Fools series in order as they were written but for others, make up your own mind. Whichever way you choose to read Victoria Twead's books, you will enjoy them all.

By Julie Haigh I received a free copy of this book to beta read-now that it's completed and released, I have eagerly bought the finished article. It is a very polished presentation with another wonderful cover painting by Nick Saltmer which marries up with the rest of Victoria Twead's Old Fools book series. I loved it-that same great winning formula, heart warming and amusing anecdotes, homely, childhood, regional and traditional recipes are included-they sound yummy! Black and white AND colour photos are included throughout the book, a real treat which really enhances the overall presentation for me. I really loved this book! Lovely, warm memories and so many chuckles! The homemade sun tan oil! The rabbit episode! Just perfectly put down in words-I kind of knew what was coming but it was just the perfect choice of words! And the expert comedy timing! Brilliant! My favourite quote from the book has got to be 'Romance blossomed over a carrier bag full of Mackerel'!!!! What a laugh! What great descriptions; for example, the 'Father Ted-like character'-oh my goodness! The 'chuckly bits, such fun, so many laughs. Every time, as Victoria Twead has now written five Old Fools books, I worry; what if I won't think it's as good? I think, what can she possibly keep thinking to write about to keep it fresh? Well, this book hooked me in right from the start with some really funny, absolutely priceless scenes. These were really just normal family life experiences-but put in her own unique entertaining way, so well observed. Again, here are a variety of writing techniques: I always like to see this-like in some of her other books, she has emails/texts/Facebook statuses and comments-in this book she includes a few of her school reports from way back when-lovely nostalgia. This is just like 'coming home'-I worried that it wouldn't be the same, not set in Spain; I had got to 'know' the people in her village in Spain in her other books-the Ufartes etc-I know I missed them in her 'Two Old Fools On A Camel' book. I needn't have worried-it's all good in this book, it has that same lovely style and expert scene setting and humour which just makes you chuckle so many times. She just writes what you want to read-and I want to read more!

I so enjoyed reading One Young Fool in Dorset. I am bias it's true because I adore Bournemouth, Poole and most of what that coastline has to offer. You don't have to be of a similar age to the Author to love the way she describes those times in her life between being young in Germany to becoming a teenager and living in Dorset with her Mum, Dad, Sister and Brother. I am, however of a similar age and so this beautiful Memoir did bring back some poingant memories for me. I love the way the Author's mum would drive them around in 'Ivy' the battered but fun old vehicle... Victoria's school days and her close friendships are just lovely - funny, emotional, a lovely look back to a childhood. I so relate with the daydreaming, love of reading & English - but Math No..... Lovely tales of childhood 'adventures' - Making dens, looking for fairies - that naughty rabbit, the escaping tortoise and bad-tempered Mr Pepper - I could go on and on.... I ordered this Memoir on pre-release and struggled to wait for some 'me' time to read it... I'm glad I did because it meant I was able to digest every word. Loved it. You don't have to have read the Old Fools Series to enjoy reading this Memoir as it is a prequel, well written - I don't know how this is possible but again you do feel as though you're there.... took me right back to things I thought I'd forgotten - thank you Victoria Twead.
