Crisp hornbeam hedges lining a country drive and throwing geometric shadows on the gravel below. Decadent cascades of fragrant wisteria spilling over a stone pergola. Rustling leaves along an allée of delicate crepe myrtle trees. Waving blossoms of roses, sage, and hydrangeas—along a salty shoreline. Edmund Hollander Landscape Architects creates gardens filled with unexpected textures, colors, and sounds meant to appeal to all the senses, inviting us to truly live in the landscape. This volume presents dozens of gorgeous estate gardens throughout the Northeast, approached thematically; individual sections reveal how components such as gateways, paths, pool terraces, bosques and groves, walls, and borders contribute to lush garden rooms, windblown seaside gardens, calming meadow gardens, intricate formal gardens, and shady tracts of woodland. Over 300 color photographs of beautiful properties in the Hamptons, Connecticut, and upstate New York provide glimpses of the best garden design happening today while breaking down its ideas for the home gardener.  Evocative text by New York Times and Landscape Architecture columnist Anne Raver details how the firm works to envelop visitors in landscapes that feel entirely whole: plantings near architecture create a dynamic entry progression; hardscape features that lead out into a broader garden gradually cede to more natural, living elements; pools are surrounded by gracious swaths of flowers that bloom in sequence as the season progresses to provide privacy for bathers and a sense of quiet seclusion. The ideas presented here will help owners of gardens of every size enjoy their land to the fullest.

The Good Garden: The Landscape Architecture of Edmund Hollander Design, by Edmund Hollander, Anne Raver

Review "These two landscape architects had served as ever-patient mentors in my early days of garden writing for Newsday, on Long Island, when I hardly knew a perennial from a petunia, and later for the New York Times, when I was stretching out into writing about public parks, environmental restoration and landscape architecture. No question was too small. No time too busy. For the months we were working on The Good Garden, we three spent a few hours every week talking about the essence of good design. For instance, they may plant an allée of Natchez crepe myrtles marching down to a Hamptons beach because these icons of such Southern cities as Charleston and Savannah are tolerant of salt winds and lean soils. Or they may use a single London plane tree, with its high spreading branches, as an airy ceiling for a summer terrace. And they’d be loath to bulldoze a cluster of wild cherry trees, their trunks and limbs sculpted by the wind, as other designers might do in order to create an uninterrupted lawn."—Anne Raver, 1st Dibs' Introspective Magazine"Known for his prolific work on the estates of New York's Long Island, Edmund Hollander creates grand gardens to embrace the palatial homes that dot the enclaves of the Hamptons: majestic oak allées leading to shingled manses, sharply sculpted hedges ringing sleek contemporary piles. In The Good Garden, Hollander explores the alchemy that connects landscape to residence. The volume, helpfully divided into sections by element—such as borders, hedges, and pool plantings—offers verdant insight into the poetic ways nature can improve and enhance architecture. It's lush, leafy escapism of the highest order." —Veranda"Large or small, a pool under the sun is the quintessence of summertime in the Hamptons. In his new book, The Good Garden, Manhattan- and Hamptons-based landscape architect Edmund Hollander has gathered some of the memorable pools and adjoining gardens he and his firm have created during the past several decades. From an infinity-eddge masterpiece with a glass wall overlooking the ocean to a simple in-ground pool, Hollander stresses 'understanding the human, natural, and architectrual ecology of a site.'" —Hamptons Cottages & Gardens"Flip through for breathtaking examples of their layered, nuanced approach, whether the subject is a gorgeous allée of cherry trees supplying seductive cover for a house, a clipped privet hedge providing an architectural backdrop for a large sculpture, or a dreamy profusion of flowering plants enclosing a swimming pool."—Town & Country

Without a doubt, these are some of the best contemporary landscapes in existence today. They are easily comparable to the Wirtiz Gardens in Europe. That being said, the book itself is sadly inadequate. There are FAR too many TINY photographs making it difficult, if not impossible, to appreciate the details. Just as bad, if not worse, MANY of the larger photographs have unfortunately been positioned so that the image is split, part of it on one page and part of it on the facing page, leaving the reader wondering what important part of the picture may have been lost in the binding. There is very little that can be more frustrating !!!Hollander's Landscapes deserve FIVE STARS. To bad the book only deserves THREE.

In this first-of-its-kind strategy guide for current high school students and anyone else who plans to attend a public university, students get the know-how they need to tackle college the smart way—before they even set foot on campus. With the ratio of students to academic advisors at public universities averaging around 300:1, new college students can’t expect much help on campus with academic planning. It’s critical for them to arrive for their first semester with the know-how they need to navigate college successfully on their own. But they usually don’t. Numerous resources exist to help students gain admission to college, but managing the transition from high school to college is a different story. Until now, it’s been largely up to students to figure out the rules of college academics through trial and error after college begins. As a result, many students make serious mistakes in their academic decisions that hurt their GPAs, prevent them from graduating on time, increase college costs, and limit their opportunities during and after college. Acing the Public University tackles head-on the crisis of inadequate academic advising for students at public colleges. It shows public-university-bound students in a do-it-yourself, paint-by-numbers manner how to be their own academic advisors. First, students get the background knowledge they need to navigate college academics successfully by themselves. They learn the ins and outs of college-level grading, degree plans, fulfilling degree requirements, “professor shopping,” and much more. The book then sets out step-by-step, easy-to-follow strategies that students can use on their own to develop a custom-tailored college completion game plan and select courses. In the course of Acing the Public University's 250+ pages, students get the tools they need to make smart academic planning decisions on their own. After acting on what they learn in the book, they can start college with a game plan and on track to: • Maximize their GPAs • Graduate on time • Complete college more cost-effectively • Use college as the springboard to the future they want With more than half of all college graduates under 25 jobless or underemployed, and with education costs at record highs, it’s more important than ever to do college right. Use Acing the Public University to get the edge for success in college … and beyond!

The GPAMaxx Guide to Acing the Public University, by Jeff Gimpel

From Kirkus Reviews

A stunningly comprehensive manual designed to help public university students maximize their GPAs and their college experiences.

Most college instructional guides focus on application strategies but provide little advice on how to excel at a college once admitted. Gimpel’s first book provides meticulous advice for succeeding academically at a public university. The problem for the average student is essentially twofold: in an increasingly competitive economy, grades have become an object of scrutiny for prospective employers. Also, tuitions have never been higher, saddling students with piles of debt in exchange for a potentially unmarketable degree. The author provides a detail-rich blueprint for both scoring high grades and completing a degree as quickly as possible, diminishing costs. As far as the speedy completion of a degree is concerned (the author finished a four-year degree in three years), the key is to test out of college courses (“credit by examination”), which allows a student to complete requirements more cheaply and quickly. Using transfer courses can accomplish this as well while simultaneously boosting one’s overall GPA. Much of the guide focuses on getting better grades, which involves carefully applied strategies for appraising and picking both professors and courses. Besides demystifying the sometimes-nebulous nature of college grades, Gimpel also makes a compelling case for their postgraduate significance, especially in a chapter entitled “Your College GPA and the Big Picture.” He also furnishes a sobering lesson on the real costs of a college education and the shocking surcharge attached to graduating late. Sometimes, the advice can be unyieldingly practical, emphasizing grades over education and personal development. The section devoted to “professor shopping” surely contains helpful tips, but it neglects to acknowledge the value of learning from a notoriously difficult instructor and succeeding (or even not) and the possibility of mentorship. Nonetheless, this is a savvy tour of the college experience that rightly makes the case that a disciplined, goal-oriented plan for university may benefit the student more than a more meandering approach.

A useful handbook, especially for those who view college primarily as a conduit to a future career.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. An essential guide for thriving at a public university By Cole I rarely leave reviews on Amazon or Yelp or the likes, but I feel I’ve stumbled on a real gem here and wanted to share. My daughter is a junior in high school and as she gets closer to college, increasing tuition headlines have certainly caught my attention. Bookshelves are saturated with tons of books on getting into college and maneuvering the fiercely competitive financial aid world, but until now, nothing really guiding students on how to actually thrive in college. After reading Acing the Public University, I now feel like I am armed with a real game plan to not only help my daughter tackle college smartly, but cost efficiently as well. The underlying mantra is simple – graduate on time (or ahead of time) with a rich college experience and the highest possible GPA. What more could a parent (or student) ask for?The author provides strategies and philosophies that once you read, you’re like “of course ... that’s brilliant … why didn’t I think of that?” Three chapters that come to mind:Dissecting Degree Plans explains the different parts of a degree plan and pitfalls to avoid that can derail students from graduating on time. An interesting analogy is presented. Think of your degree plan as a contract with the University. Deviate from the contract and there are consequences.Finding Your Inner Student focuses on the student recognizing which format of class presentation and grading style they do well in and do poorly in … which all ties directly into Professor Shopping.Professor Shopping provides a tips and tricks tutorial for finding out how particular professors approach teaching their courses and how they grade. By knowing “your inner student”, you can then make more strategic decisions in picking classes that you might do better in ... thus raising the GPA.I’m really happy I found this book. The author brought so many things I never thought about to my foreground. I didn’t know that less than a third of students graduate in 4 years or that half of all college students take 5 years. That’s an extra year of tuition the vast majority is shelling out. Acing the Public University has completely changed my game plan for my daughter’s college education. It’s a great book for both parents and student to read. I will certainly be asking my daughter to read it as the book is filled with smart ideas that will serve her well not only in college but in all areas of life.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Practical guidebook, valuable idea, credible writer ... By Boris I bought the book for my nephews upon the suggestion of an academic advisor and I loved it: A) It is practical, concise and to the point; B) I like the idea of maximizing your GPA at a (relatively) affordable 4-year public university, which, I believe, may get you a leg up when applying for a job on Wall Street or in Management Consulting (i.e. every decimal above a 3.0 GPA may be worth thousands of dollars in future earnings); C) The author seems credible: He successfully tested his recommended methods during his college years (I started with the bio first and switched to the introduction.)I had never heard about books highlighting GPA-maximizing strategies. I found many books about how to ace the SAT but, to my knowledge, nobody asks for an SAT score on a job application.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. I’m very glad that I did so By Michael Bauer I ordered Acing the Public University after reading the glowing 5-Star review of the book by the San Francisco Book Review. Having now read it, I’m very glad that I did so. I will be working closely with my daughter to make sure she heads off for her first semester of college with a college completion game plan in hand, thanks to this book. It’s no secret that most of us parents are focused on getting our kids admitted into a college. There are hundreds of books which we can choose from to help us with the college admissions process. There are, however, precious few books that help students with the next step once they get admitted to a college: successfully transitioning from high school to college. To the best of my knowledge, there are none designed with students in mind who will be attending a state university. Until this book, that is!Given that state support for state universities has declined by more than 25 percent over the last three decades, students today cannot assume that they will get quality academic advising on campus. On most state school campuses, there are hundreds of students for each academic advisor. As a result, students need to make sure they arrive for their first semester able to be their own academic advisors and make well-informed and strategic academic planning decisions independently. As parents, we therefore owe it to our children to ensure that they have this ability before they head off to college. Fortunately, Acing the Public University gives students the tools and acumen that they need to advise themselves and make strategic academic planning decisions on their own. It shows students in an easy to read and systemic fashion how to develop a comprehensive college completion plan. It lays out exactly how students need to go about doing this (Step 1, Step 2, etc.). It provides, in short, a blueprint for college success. If you expect your son or daughter will be attending a state university after high school, this book can help you help your child. A great investment in your child’s future!

Very Informative and Easy to Read and Remember By El Chupacabra I needed to learn a lot about ancient Rome in a short amount of time for a project I was working on. DK Books are usually really good and showing a lot of pictures and getting a lot of information across in the least amount of technical text. This book did not disappoint. You're not going to find a lot of history on different emperors, but you will find tons of information on roman lifestyles, and that is what I needed. I was able to read it all in a single sitting.

She loved being able to point out the items she had learned about.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Quite repetitious By K. Howard This book was a very good price, and I liked the subject matter. The pages were very thin. As you turn the pages, you can see the design through the page. However, the pictures are printed only on one side, so you can use whatever medium with which you prefer to work. My main problem, however, was that the pictures were very repetitious. There was a particular star design that was used over and over. I got tired of it. So many moons were exactly the same, as well as a certain sun face. The total design on each page was different, but the elements composing the pictures were overused. Still, for the price it is a fun book.

I have not yet consulted the second edition, and will not until it becomes available in a library near me. I will never pay so much for any book in this series ever again (prices right now are hovering around $120, print or digital). For the last few years I have been working on my own bibliography and correspondence index, so when I do get the chance to consult the second edition, I should be in a position to comment on its value relative to the first edition. I can guarantee, however, that it's not worth what they are charging for it, unless one has money to throw away. When my own bibliography is more or less complete, I will make it available online. Since I made the review below, I have become more and more aware of how inadequate the first edition was, so inadequate that the second edition could easily be a massive improvement and woefully inadequate at the same time. [/update]It took me a long time to decide I needed to buy this book, because the price was so prohibitive. Now I'm not sure it was worth the money. Most of the articles and books listed can be found easily with a simple search in any good library database. Of course, this technology was not very advanced when the book was published, and the recent developments might be part of why no updated and corrected edition of this book has been released. For example, the correspondence index in Chapter 7, while useful to an extent, is riddled with careless and unscholarly errors. The book is worth 3 stars because the organization of pre-2000 Chopin literature is helpful, but in the 21st century, we should strive to make this sort of index-type information available to students online for free. It is not that difficult to do, especially in the context of a format that can be continually updated with little effort and no cost. And yet, anyone who now desires to do so must take copyright into consideration.
