Dancing with Molly, by Lena Horowitz

From School Library Journal Gr 10 Up—The narrator of this story is a self-professed "band geek" who is tired of being overshadowed by her popular and beautiful younger sister. At the beginning of this narrative, she is excited to go home and tell her family that her school band will be marching in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, but all of that is overshadowed by her mother's enthusiasm over the younger sister's prom invitation. When she goes over to her best friend's to commiserate, she is given her first taste of MDMA, or Ecstasy. Written in journal format, this story is about a teen's gradual slide into heavy drug use. Although the parents, especially the mother, are drawn a little too shallowly, the story itself is fairly believable. There is plenty of information about how Ecstasy works and its side effects. Horowitz sets this cautionary tale against the backdrop of raves and luxury homes, with no parents around. The story's resolution may come as a surprise to many readers, and even the popular younger sister is affected in unexpected ways. The mature sex scenes and heavy drug use make this a suitable title for older teens. VERDICT A quick read for mature high school students who liked Ellen Hopkins's "Crank" trilogy (S. & S.).—Deanna McDaniel, Genoa Middle School, OH

About the Author Lena Horowitz was born and raised in New York City, where she became familiar with the party scene at a young age. Now she lives in Brooklyn with her husband, two young daughters, and a playful cat named Hope. She’s no longer in the party scene (unless you count princess tea parties), but she still enjoys the occasional EDM dance session.

My dad gave me this journal for my birthday last year when I was a sophomore. I couldn’t even remember if I still had it or not, but I saw it when I woke up this morning. I can’t believe it’s just been sitting on the bookshelf by my desk for over a year now, but I remember when he gave it to me I was like, what am I supposed to write in this? Nothing very exciting ever happens around here. So, I kind of can’t believe I actually have something worth writing down. I also can’t believe I’m really about to write it down, because Mom and Dad would freaking flip out if they ever read it. And while we’re on the stuff I just can’t believe, I sort of can’t believe that I’m sitting upright writing anything at all because when I woke up this morning I felt like the bottom of a shoe. It was like my head was in a vise, and I wasn’t entirely sure I could move my arms. All the energy in my whole body felt like it had leaked out of my spine and dribbled onto the floor. I suppose the ecstasy had something to do with that. (Spoiler alert: That’s the crazy thing that happened last night that I can’t believe I just wrote down in this journal.) My grandma likes to watch reruns of this old cop show on Netflix. It’s called Dragnet, and the detective on there is always saying: Just the facts, ma’am. So, here are the facts: I did ecstasy last night for the very first time. At Jess’s house. With Brandon and Pete from school, and Jess’s friend Kelly. Also a fact: I am NOT the type of girl who would even CONSIDER doing ecstasy. Usually. But last night sort of tested the limits of what I consider usual. So, those are the facts. Here’s why: Jess called me after I got home from marching band practice last night. (Yes, we still have marching band practice in April. More on that in a minute.) Anyway, she told me to come over and spend the night at her place. We do this a lot, so I didn’t really think anything of it. I was especially glad that she called me because at the exact moment the phone rang, I was standing in the kitchen setting the table for dinner while Mom tossed a salad and Dad was going in and out to the deck, checking the salmon he was grilling on a cedar plank. I was really excited because after we all sat down I was going to bust out my big news: Our band is going to the FREAKING MACY’S THANKSGIVING DAY PARADE THIS FALL. So, I was really excited to tell everybody this, especially my mom, because she’s sort of horrified that her oldest daughter is a band geek. She’s always heaving these big soap-opera sighs about how ugly the uniforms are. (“I mean, really, polyester? In the twenty-first century? Couldn’t they give you kids something that breathes a little?”) Anyway, I was hoping that by GETTING ON NATIONAL TELEVISION with my clarinet I might put some of Mom’s epic band shame to rest, but could I do that? Oh no. No, no. Because before I could get the table set, Ashley came screaming in the front door with news of her own. She was in full-blown squeal mode: I’M GOING TO PROM I’M GOING TO PROM I’M GOING TO PROM AND I’M ONLY A SOPHOMORE. God. It makes my head hurt just remembering the decibel level of her voice. Needless to say, my mom started crying. CRYING. Tiny tears of joy streaming down her cheeks. She and Ashley were actually hugging and jumping up and down, my mother still holding the salad tongs and flinging baby spinach across the room. I just stood there, holding the forks and watching this until my dad came in with the salmon and looked at me like, What is going on here? I just shrugged and finished setting the table while Ashley and Mom came back to earth and we finally all sat down to eat. The irony of the situation, of course, is that I’m a junior this year and I have not been asked to prom. Not that I’d go if I was asked. In fact, it hadn’t really crossed my mind that I’d even want to go. But of course Ashley has been asked as a sophomore. By Reid Boston. The freaking quarterback of the football team. Ashley and my mom talked nonstop about this the entire meal like they were in seventh grade at a slumber party. It sort of made my stomach hurt, but I choked down my salmon and salad and then just sat there staring at them while Ashley squealed on and on about Reid and how handsome he is and how he’s got all of these football scholarship prospects and how she wasn’t sure if he even knew her name before today. Finally, she took a breath, and my dad looked over at me and said, How was your day at school, and I shrugged and said, Well, we found out that the band is going to the Macy’s parade this fall. Even Ashley was excited by this—which is one of the reasons I can’t hate her, even as much as I want to sometimes. She started squealing again and jumped up and gave me a hug and my dad was really excited and asked about all the details. Mom, of course, stayed quiet, just munching her baby spinach and smiling and nodding. Dad was trying to encourage her to get more excited for me, which I appreciate but have learned is a losing battle. He looked over and said, Isn’t that EXCITING, Kathleen? And Mom nodded again and said, Oh yes. It’s great. I just looked at her and said, Well, it’s not a prom date or anything. There was this awkward pause and I got up and was carrying my plate to the sink when mercifully the phone rang and it was Jess saying I should come over. I had no idea what she was planning. I didn’t even know that there were other people coming. I certainly didn’t think I’d be doing a tab of ecstasy. Jesus. Who am I? This is not to say that I am a prude or something. I have a cosmo every now and then when I’m at Jess’s house. She likes to make them when she forces me to watch complete seasons of Sex and the City. Not a couple episodes—Complete. Seasons. And her mom doesn’t really care if we have a drink or two as long as we don’t drive. Her mom would TOTALLY care if she knew we were also smoking weed, but we only do that when our friend Brandon is around. He and Jess used to have this weird crush thing going in junior high, but that was before Jess became the big girl in our class the summer after eighth grade. She got boobs and a lot of curves that summer and sort of never looked back. I drove over to Jess’s place in my crappy little car. I guess I should be grateful for it, but I wish I drove something besides an eight-year-old hatchback. It’s just like one more thing—you know? One more way that I’m a little less cool than the other girls in my class. I feel like there are all these ways that I don’t measure up, starting with my weird curly brown hair and small rack and big hips. I mean—none of these things are things I have control over. I can dress it up and I used to try really hard, but after a while it just became exhausting. All the hair straightening and eyelash curling in the world just doesn’t matter when you show up in a Fiesta with a dent in the side. At a certain point, I just decided I couldn’t give a shit anymore. But still, sometimes I wonder what it would be like to look like Ashley and step out of a cool car and turn heads in the parking lot. Instead I’m just this girl that nobody notices. At least when I stopped with the makeup and the outfits, the cool girls stopped making fun of me. They just ignored me instead. I was just one more band geek in jeans and a hoodie. Is it better to be mocked because people feel threatened, or just ignored because you don’t even register? Am I not even worth making snide remarks about anymore? And why do I care so much? Jeez. I have to go get some more Advil.

I felt that it was interesting enough, but that it just made drugs seem cool and would encourage teens to try them. While it does make molly sound quite fun and exciting in the beginning, the rest of the tale shows how horrific it can be. I couldn't stop reading as I began to see the character starting to spiral out of control. She can't see how it's affecting her life negatively and what danger she's putting herself in. Even with all of the bad decisions and scary things that happens, she still refuses to accept that the drug could be a problem.By the end of the book I was completely engaged in the story and emotionally attached to the character. I couldn't put the book down until I knew the outcome.I would definitely recommend this book to anyone that enjoys an emotionally charged story that delivers a clear message. I think every teen should read this book, and every parent as well.

By Brandi Leigh Kosiner 3.5 stars (liked it a lot) I wanted to read Dancing with Molly because I can relate with that all American normal feeling. I have always felt like I can just melt into a crowd, that there isn't much that distinguishes me from others, or worse, that I may be the butt of a joke. So I could relate with her on that. Although I normally want to get to know the character before something big happens that changes their lives, Dancing with Molly was okay for me to start in the after. She is writing in a journal but it never felt forced to me, or hard to read. I honestly just felt like a normal past tense 1st person POV. Which is good, because sometimes the journals or poetry isn't for me and gets in my way of enjoying a story. Her family is talked about a lot. She feels like she is a disappointment to her Mom who favors her sister. Her sister is going to the prom as a sophomore, and will giggle and share secrets with her mom, but she always feels like her Mom wishes a different life or personality for her. I was glad that her dad was enthusiastic about her marching band though, and that she at least seemed to have that haven. I liked her friends, even though they are in on taking the drugs and drinking as well. They never pressured her per say, but she was definitely a follower, and on the night she first took it, she wanted to break out from the normalness. Oh and this is not a subject I really know much about, and to prove it to you, I thought that molly was the name of the main character for an embarrassingly long percentage of the book. I did like how by the ending, she has realized a lot about rolling and the cost of it, and I even think that it went to a bit of an extreme after the close calls she witnessed but I guess that it finally got heavy and hard enough for her to want to stop. And I think that probably makes it realistic, because if all people who have tried or are thinking about trying to stop or didn't do drugs because of close calls, then we would have a drug free nation.Bottom Line: Allure and dangers of taking drugs from a teen easy to relate to.

How did a former mob enforcer become a compassionate advocate for animals in need of loving homes? How did his hardened heart open up to the plight of abused and abandoned pets?James "Head" Guiliani was an unlikely candidate to become a passionate animal rescuer. Raised in a religious family in a blue-collar neighborhood, James became involved in street gangs at a young age. By his mid-twenties, he'd become a 6'2" 250-pound enforcer for the Gambino crime family during the reign of infamous mob boss John Gotti. But after years of worsening alcohol and drug use and a stretch in the Riverhead Correctional Facility, James finally hit bottom. It was then that he met Lena Perrelli, who helped turn his life around, providing the love and support he'd rejected in the past. And when the couple rescued an abandoned and abused shih tzu, the second phase of James's salvation began. Lovingly named Bruno, the small dog opened the former enforcer's hardened heart, and James discovered a new purpose in life as a devoted animal rescuer.Dogfella tells how this onetime altar boy from Queens became a gang member, a mob confidante, an an addict and convicted felon—and how he found redemption by dedicating his life to animals. Alongside his personal journey, James shares stories from his rescue missions with Keno's Animal Rescue Shelter in Brooklyn: saving pit bulls from a dogfighting ring, driving through six-foot snowdrifts to reach 200 cats stranded in a blizzard, taking in homeless ducks from Staten Island, and many more. Sometimes scary, sometimes funny, and often poignant, James's story shows how the love of an animal can bring even the most hopeless cases a new purpose and a path to redemption.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. surprisingly well written and hard to put down, interesting stuff. By ChaplinF I was recommended this book by a friend and although its not the sort of thing I normally read (I have very little interest in criminal types OR dogs) I was told it would cheer me up and was a good read. Well I certainly needed both! After having rather a horrid time of late (won't go into detail) but my mood was instantly lifted reading this book which I found to be very well written, certainly from the heart and was the kick in the pants I needed to start thinking more positive. Its very life affirming and the writer not only comes across as being very human, down to earth and easy to relate but is also able to show no matter what life throws at you, its in your grasp to change things for the better. I highly recommend this book, certainly a little gem of a read!

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. A Dog To The Rescue By Gloria Keeley An amazing story about a man who was at the end of his rope, almost literally. A life gone wrong, terribly wrong, until it looked like there was no hope. Until Bruno. Hard to believe that an abandoned dog can change a man's life so drastically, but that's exactly what happens. I love any story about a rescued animal, especially a dog. But what adds to this story is the background of the rescuer. I highly recommend this book, you won't be sorry.

By malvina Granovskaya I have always been interested to learn more about the Etsy business model and what it entails. I am a stay at home mom, so having the ability to start up a small business and work from home is something that I have definitely considered. I have also shopped on Etsy and wanted to know more about what starting up an Etsy business entails and how to turn a profit. This book did a nice job giving a brief history of Etsy. This book is geared toward the person who has a serious business model in mind and is ready to expand their shop. While I appreciate the detail that the authors took to outline the importance of being motivated and having a clear idea and goals in mind. I felt that too much time was spent on that. I also found that the chapters were lengthy and provided grand visions rather than more of a "how to." In today's world I think many people look for a quick fix and after reading most of this book, I learned that setting up an Etsy shop may be simple, but having it stand out from the crowd requires lots of work with regards to marketing, social media, etc. I would have loved a more simple and concise book. I received this book in exchange for my honest and unbiased feedback.

Very informative guide By Angie Bailey I found this to be an extremely informative guide for anybody with an Etsy shop or for anybody thinking about starting one. After reading this guide, you'll start thinking about yourself as a small business owner. This guide focuses on common mistakes and ways to avoid them, how to maximize sales, using tags and keywords appropriately, best ways to package and ship your products, best ways to promote via social media, and how to improve your customer service. You'll also learn ways to connect with the Etsy community. This guide also includes a few Q&A's with real Etsy shop owners where they will talk about their challenges and give tips, etc. A lot of the information is repetitive but it's presented nicely.*Disclosure: I received a free copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. No other compensation was received. All opinions expressed are my own.

By Colleen This book was well written and thought out. The information provided was really useful. The background information on the Etsy platform itself was really great, since that’s not really “common knowledge” type of stuff. The author also provided great insight on some really important things to know if you are starting (or have already started) your own online business, like using social media to boost sales and take your business to the next level, common mistakes sellers can make and even tips on how to avoid them! There were also sections on improving customer service and shipping, really important topics for business owners!I don’t sell on Etsy but I have purchased quite a few things, including a really cute engagement mug and more recently, I spent hours looking at wedding invitations and cake toppers. I can tell you that I bypassed some Etsy sellers (who were probably really great) based solely on their page. When there are other sellers, who are just as accessible, with the same or very similar product, you really need those great photos, DESCRIPTIVE descriptions, measurements as well as competitive cost. Without that, you get lost in the crowd. The author was dead-on with that section. The book was definitely an easy read, with a ton of information and I think it gives the reader a pretty good handle on what is involved. I would definitely recommend to someone who is looking to move ahead in their Etsy business. A friend of mine will be leaving her FT job to sell Etsy full-time and this would be great to give her, even if only to “remind” her of what she needs to do to be more successful!*Sample provided for review purposes*

The second book in the highly acclaimed Student's Series, and a must for any person studying the basic fundamentals of music. The handy-sized volume includes easily understood examples, exercises and an excellent section of harmony. A highlight is the brief section on transposition in a most usable, descriptive format. Perfect for individual or classroom use.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. It was good, I guess By Cindy Hagerthy But there were several things about it that turned me off. First, that he called her "little rabbit". A rabbit is known to be very easily scared and she was very brave. Calling her that was Very demeaning, especially coming from a wolf, who -eats- rabbits. She wasn't just a waitress, or store clerk. She was a medical doctor. He should've respected her more than to call her a rabbit. And then, at the end, he should've punched Caleb for sending them to Nova Scotia without any more information than he gave them. The man needed to be brought down a peg, Pack Master or not.Otherwise, it was a well written story with only a few typos. Engaging characters and plot. Not your typical shifter story. And effective enough to make me mad, lol, so there you go.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Daughter's Review: By twigstwinenvine Originally posted on verbositybookreviews.wordpress.com:Plot:The thing I’ve found most unique about both of the books in this series is that, while they’re definitely sci-fi (I mean, there’s spaceships and holotabs and other super cool things I wish I had in my life), the feel of the plot is much looser than most others in this genre, and the main character’s journey feels almost more like a contemporary experience rather than your average, plot-focused sci-fi. But I love that because it’s so unique. You get all the fascinating features of a futuristic world, while still having that special, human-experience aspect that usually only the best contemporaries can give. It’s not what I expected when I first got into the series, but the more I read, the more I love it, because of how perfect it is for this story. However, that isn’t to say that there isn’t a plot at all, or that there aren’t plot-oriented elements. For instance, the overarching stake of Belvun. We definitely get to watch as Arman lives his life and learns about the truth of humanity, but there’s also this looming knowledge that Belvun is dying always kept constant and important. Hovering just in the corner of the eye, so to speak, so we can never quite forget the fact that it’s there or that we’ll have to deal with it sooner or later.Plot: 4 1/2 stars out of 5.Characters:My favorite thing about this book is definitely the characters. I love how each one is crafted to be so special, that, even if they were only in the book for a few pages, their individual personality stood out so brilliantly, I couldn't possibly forget them. John and Kile, for instance, are barely secondary characters, yet I love them because so much of who they are just shines in the few scenes they're truly present on the page. So much of their hearts and just... their being packed into everything they did and every word they said. It was beautiful. Resonance (Recovery Book 2), by S. Alex Martin
