I was looking for something a little different - but not too different - and I got it. While the basic premise is pretty standard (Earth is running out of space and corporate corruption is rampant) it was handled in a unique and refreshing way. The characters all had their own story arc, the plot was complex enough to keep me guessing until the end (with a little twist there, too), and the storytelling was done very well. The author is well written, and while I found a couple of minor editing issues (I think two?) they weren't any worse than what is typical in a traditionally published "blockbuster" novel. Granted, I probably wouldn't have purchased this book normally, but it was definitely worth taking a chance on with Kindle Unlimited, and I'm very glad I did.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Blown away! By Jennifer Parker I really thoroughly enjoyed reading this, I enjoy reading a lot of different kinds of books but I am not often completely knocked of guard and surprised by a book. This one got me and I loved it! Can't wait to see where the writer goes next. I'm hooked!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Great first book of a series. By Dacy Earth is corrupt, overpopulated, and in terrible shape environmentally. The government has sent ships full of people to live on other planets in other galaxies in an effort to ease the overpopulation of Earth. This story follows several people on their journey towards a new life and the trials and tribulations they face along the way.Typically stories with several main characters fall flat to me, but I was invested in them all throughout the book. Peters also has a knack for building up the suspense with one character and then switching to another character's story line at the highest point of suspense. Thanks, Peters. (Do you detect my sarcasm?) Be warned that if you read this book (and you should) that you'll want to read it one sitting, so make sure you have a good bit of free time before you start it.This book was written as the first in a trilogy, and I can't wait for the next one. The story is exciting, surprising, depressing, and hopeful all rolled into one book. I highly recommend it.

Most of us understand the value of eating and buying local. Taking back our food, goods, and services from multinational corporations and sourcing them from small growers, producers, artisans, and entrepreneurs benefits our families, our environment, and our communities. Heal Local argues that "100-mile healthcare" can be equally valuable in terms of how we treat illness and injury and maintain wellness.

This innovative guide demonstrates that by harnessing multifaceted whole plants, we can rely on homegrown or regionally produced herbs rather than importing exotics and non-natives. Based on the small apothecary model, author Dawn Combs explains how to:

  • Maximize the benefits of homegrown first aid, from increased freshness, potency, and effectiveness to community resilience and local economic growth
  • Make home herbal healthcare less intimidating and more attainable, by focusing on twenty herbs to effectively treat most common injuries and ailments
  • Implement a local medicine culture safely and sustainably, while protecting and respecting wild plant populations

Many herbals overwhelm their readers, presenting a list of hundreds of herbs, each with a different purpose. Heal Local empowers readers by showing that you don't need to know everything about every herb on the planet to create a complete home apothecary. Anyone can be self-sufficient with their wellness, regardless of their previous knowledge, experience, or available space.

Dawn Combs is a homestead herbalist with over twenty years' experience and author of Conceiving Healthy Babies. As well as training others in herbal home healthcare, she treats her family's common illnesses and minor injuries with natural therapies, herbal remedies, and appropriate foods.

Killing the Model Minority Stereotype comprehensively explores the complex permutations of the Asian model minority myth, exposing the ways in which stereotypes of Asian/Americans operate in the service of racism. Chapters include counter-narratives, critical analyses, and transnational perspectives. This volume connects to overarching projects of decolonization, which social justice educators and practitioners will find useful for understanding how the model minority myth functions to uphold white supremacy and how complicity has a damaging impact in its perpetuation. The book adds a timely contribution to the model minority discourse.

By Lori Martin Killing the Model Minority Stereotype: Asian American Counterstories and Complicity is an important collection of scholarly essays addressing the diverse experiences of people of Asian ancestry in the U.S. and beyond. The contributing authors tackle a host of historical and contemporary issues, including: sports, education, gender, and media, and inform ongoing debates surrounding the myth of post-racialism beyond the traditional black/white dichotomy. The edited volume should be required reading for anyone interested in understanding the tangible (and intangible) dangers of so-called positive stereotypes.

Dead and Kicking (The Harry Russo Diaries Book 1), by Lisa Emme

About the Author Lisa has been a storyteller from practically the day she was born. Known to have told a tall tale or two as a child, she has always had an active imagination. A voracious reader, Lisa has been preparing for this adventure in writing since she first became hooked on Fantasy novels at the age of ten. After reading hundreds, if not thousands of books, she finally felt it was time to put her thoughts on paper. The Harry Russo Diaries is one of the first ideas to battle its way out of the deep dark crevices of her mind.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Chapter by Chapter's Review of Dead and Kicking By MaryAnn Dead and Kicking by Lisa Emme was a read that had me chuckling pretty much throughout the whole book. With a quirky main character and a gruff sexy homicide detective, and a world filled with supernatural beings to satisfy your craving, Dead and Kicking was a solid book 1 in The Harry Russo Diaries.Harry Russo has a gift. Not only is she a witch, but she’s able to communicate with the dead AND another gift that comes to light later in the book. A pretty kick ass gift if you ask me.Unfortunately for Harry, her blind date winds up dead and contacts her for help. Harry ends up mixed up in a whole lot of danger, and winds up making deals with one of the most feared vampires around. And as if things couldn’t get any worse, throw in some zombies into the mix and a little shock and awe twist at the end, and I would say you’ve got a pretty good recipe for pretty intriguing supernatural read. The opening chapter to Dead and Kicking by Lisa Emme was actually done so well that it would draw in many readers to continue. I liked how it was revealing teaser of what to expect from main character, Harry Russo. Harry Russo is a character that I feel people can relate to, and it always helps that she has some great one-liners. My thoughts on the male lead, Cian Nash, is still debatable. There’s no question that he’s a sexy brooding character, but he was way too grumpy. Like, irritatingly grumpy. It’s a good thing that he seems to arrive right at the nick of time, and does something/says something utterly sweet that makes up for SOME of his grumpiness. I’m still waiting for him to make me swoon, folks. The storyline was attention grabbing and progressed quite well. I enjoyed the supernatural elements in the book, and parts kinda sorta reminded me of HBO’s True Blood. Vamps, witches, werewolves, zombies…Dead and Kicking by Lisa Emme pretty much had it all.I will say though that the way in which some of the story was written was confusing. For example, the character is speaking directly to the reader, but some of it was in the past tense. So I was waiting for the point in the book where the character would say something like “…and so now here I am”, and then change to present tense. It was like a lead up to a current event. With a little tweaking, I’m sure that The Harry Russo Diaries will become an instant hit with fans of True Blood or Supernatural. A solid intro to the world of Harry Russo, author Lisa Emme will easily find a following with fans of supernatural reads. Grab a copy, and check it out for yourself!

It's got witches, vampires, and shifters with just the right touch of romance and a good bit of humor. I am looking forward to the next book in this series.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Can't wait for the next book By Lehria Harry, the female lead, amused me, although a few times I wanted to smack her upside the head for ignoring some obvious things. I loved that she was loyal and did the right thing even when it landed her into trouble. She didn't cower away from it. Plus, she wasn't a bitch! Some people feel that making a woman strong means she has to be a bitch. Ugh.And Nash... well hello. Now there's someone I want to wake up next to. While he was overbearing, he was still surprisingly sweet. And Harry, well, she didn't put up with his shit. The world building was decent. It slowly unwrapped without overwhelming or giving major info dumps. I want to learn more about Isaac, the vampire, as well as the Magistrate. Now there was one scary dude.Overall, I enjoyed the story, I loved the characters, and I can't wait to read more.

Outstanding Getting started Guide for Python, Data Science and Machine Learning for wanna be practitioners & hobbyists By Adnan Masood, PhD Are you a Beginner who would like to learn python, in context with a specific area, and tired of using syntax focused books sans practical examples? ORAre you exploring data science landscape and want to see practical examples of how to actually use machine learning algorithms in data science context? If you answer in the affirmative to either of the questions above, "Python for data science for dummies" is the perfect book for you. Luca Massaron is a practicing data scientist, and a prolific author of several books including Regression Analysis with Python , Machine Learning For Dummies, Python Data Science Essentials, Regression Analysis with Python, and Large Scale Machine Learning with Python. He is also a leading Kaggle enthusiast, and you can see his 'practitioner fingerprints' all over this book; especially in later chapters about data processing, ETL, cleanup, data sources, and challenges. This book starts with the fundamentals of Python data analysis programming, and explains the setup of Python development environment using anaconda with IPython (Jupyter notebooks). Authors start by considering the emergence of data science, outline the core competencies of a data scientist, and describe the Data Science Pipeline before taking a plunge into explaining Python’s Role in Data Science and introducing Python’s Capabilities and Wonders.Once you get your bearings about the IDE setup, chapter 4 focuses on Basic Python before you get your Hands Dirty with Data. What I like about this manuscript is that the writing keeps it real. Instead of giving made up examples, authors talk about items like knowing when to use NumPy or pandas and real world scenarios like removing duplicates, creating a data map and data plan, dealing with Dates in Your Data, Dealing with Missing data, parsing etc; problems which practicing data scientists encounter on a daily basis.Contemporary topics like Text mining are also addressed in the book with enough details of topics such as working with Raw Text, Stemming and removing stop words, Bag of Words Model and Beyond, Working with n‐grams, Implementing TF‐IDF transformations, and adjacency matrix handling. This is also where you start getting a basic understanding of how machine learning algorithms work in practice.Practical aspects of evaluating a data science problem are addressed later, with techniques defined for researching solutions, formulating a hypothesis, data preperation, feature creation, binning and discretization, leading up to vectors and matrix manipulation, and visualization with MatPlotLib. Even though the book does not discuss theano, DL4J, Torch, Caffe or TensorFlow, it still provides an introduction to key python ML library Scikit‐learn. This 400 page book also covers key topics like SVD, PCA, NMF, Recommendation systems, Clustering, Detecting Outliers, logistic Regression, Naive Bayes, Fitting a Model, bias and variance, Support Vector Machines, and Random Forest classifiers to name a few. The resources provided in the end are definitely worth subscribing to for every self-respecting data science enthusiast.I highly recommend this book for those beginners interested in data science and also want to learn and leverage Python skills for this rapidly emerging field.

Easy book to help you start understanding Data Science By Bryan Nosar I was taking Data Mining at my University when I decided that I wanted to get a bit of help and get an edge on the subject so I was ahead of the class. This book helped explain everything and even had the output of the code to show what each code block would do. I ended up searching around on the author's website and he does have all of the source code in a zip file. Easy book to help you start understanding Data Science.

Forced into an arranged marriage, warrior princess Lynx is on a crusade to destroy her betrothed...but will her steam-powered technology be a match for his supernatural abilities? Or will he destroy her first? Warrior princess Lynx was helping her brother through a rite of passage into the raiders—the band of rebels who protect their nomadic tribe from imperial guardsmen—when she received a summons to marry her sworn enemy, Crown Prince Lukan. The command cannot be denied. Not when it’s backed up by one thousand superhuman guardsmen stationed near her tribe’s desert encampment. With nothing but her wits and her mundane fighting skill to aid her, Lynx is now on a crusade to destroy Lukan and his evil empire. If she fails, she forfeits not only her own life but the lives of every person in her tribe. Unbeknown to Lynx, the only thing the beautiful, brooding Lukan fears is the curse that says Lynx will destroy him and his world-conquering empire. Armed with secret but diabolical, mind-controlling technology, Lukan is confident he’s safe from her threats. Unfortunately, no high-tech device can protect him from his lust for her. And it’s his lust that will trigger his downfall. Rebel’s Honor is an intrigue-filled, romantic steampunk adventure. Warning: Don’t start reading at bedtime. Rebel’s Honor will keep you turning the pages all night.

Review "I loved this book and found that it was a great page turner with a great mixture of romance and adventure." Kindle reviewer.

About the Author I write high-octane steampunk fantasy. All my stories have an adventure at the heart with a liberal sprinkling of romance and intrigue thrown into the mix. To confuse things, I also write adventure travel books set firmly on planet Earth. Weird, I know, but it makes me tick. I am a South African, currently living in the UK with my husband, Andrew, my three daughters, a yapping Toy Pomeranian, and a fantastic farm cat called Pixel. When I'm not writing, I'm reading, traveling, herding kids around, taking dogs for walks, and avoiding all cooking.

By Amazon Customer Rebels Honor offers a great new voice in fantasy with the world building strongly reminiscent of Africa. Lynx is a strong and interesting heroine and the concepts of advanced tech fallen into misuse and largely forgotten is both intriguing and central to the plot. The opening chapters of the book are extremely strong and create a vivid and realistic view of a world divided, with Lynxes clan, village and ostrich hunting jumping out of the page at the reader. In the remainder of the book there is interesting misdirection and misrepresentation of characters which increases the sense of intrigue as well as anticipation - you as the reader know something about each character that the characters collectively do not and it is a heady experience. Axel is a wonderful and straightforward match to Lynx and you find yourself really cheering for him as the story progresses, but he is not as complex and layered as Lukan and this is definitely the character to watch! This was an easy and enjoyable read and comes highly recommended.

It's not a typical romantic story, though there is romance in the plot, and bonus points for it not being hard out political either. Timeline wise can almost be compare to the Shannara series from Terry Brooks in that it happens way into the future after a great war threatened the whole of civilisation; but in this case some technology still exits. The main characters are complex and well developed and continue to grow throughout the book and even in the second one which I am currently reading. Lynx, as a heroine, shows that complexity and growth really well as she goes from being a raider in the Norrin tribe to being the crown princess and future empress. She finds out that nothing is as cut and dried as she though and has to revise quite a bit of her idealism and learn to maneuver among all the greys.

By Kim Loved this book and will be adding Gwynn White as an author to follow! This is the first steampunk novel that I have read (and I have read a lot!) based in Africa, and the blend of the African theme in the Norin culture and names and the steampunk theme is unique to me. The story starts with an intriguing hunt and kept me turning the pages, with twists and turns and great scene and character building. The heroine, Lynx, is my kind of leading lady - strong willed, honourable, and because of that; a tiny bit predictable. Whereas the world she navigates and the characters she meets are anything but.As soon as I finished Rebel's Honor, I downloaded the next in the series, Warlords Wager, to carry on the story of Lynx, Axel and Lukan and I have not been disappointed. I'm really hoping the author is very busy on the third book!

A Sensual Bit of Paranormal Romance Fluff By PURPLE JEWELS Un-Witched was a sexy, paranormal romance fantasy with a dash of humor and young adult angst. Heavy on the fantasy so be prepared to suspend logic and disbelief. The writing was pretty good but the author needs to be more careful with her editing, spell-checking, etc. Elizabeth is liable enough by quite often she come across as too frustratingly and/or unbelievably naïve or as a spoiled selfish brat. I liked Gunther but found it just a bit difficult to swallow that he would wait a month or months for a woman he just met. Nevertheless, I enjoyed their love story and felt that it had a wonderful fairy tale romance meets erotica type of vibe. The character development was good and the story moved along at a constantly good pace. This is definitely an Adult read because it contains some very sensual and fairly explicit love scenes. It ended with a fairy tale HEA which was heartwarmingly cute. It's a very lite enjoyable read for those who enjoy a bit of paranormal romantic fluff with their erotica. I gave it 4 stars because under amazon's rating system 4 stars means "I like It" and I really did like it.BTW, the Chick on the cover is sexy and looks confident but she doesn't seem to represent Liz. Moreover, I think that the synopsis given for this story is misleading and/or just plain inaccurate. For example, Liz wasn't looking for her mate. At the beginning of the story she thought that she already knew who her mate was. Neither did Liz navigate a large city looking for her mate.
