Recently I transitioned from the military into a civilian career. During this time I was worried about being able to describe my experiences and skills effectively to employers with no military background. After reading this book though, I found myself very confident in not only WHAT I was going to say during interviews, but also HOW I was going to say it and the reasoning behind it. The author just goes back and tells the beginnings of the characters. While the author is great she needs to keep in mind that people enjoy this series and may be disappointed to find out they waited this long for the story to continue and it doesn't . I'm very disappointed that this was all there was to the book. I won't be preordering anymore of her books and most likely won't buy the next in the series if there is one. I pre ordered and counted down the days to find out what happens and all I got was back story?? REALLY?? The author thinks that's what we wanted? So disappointed!

Jessica Meigs definitely succeeds in doing that. I love her characters and enjoy the development of them. The story has just the right amount of suspense to keep you turning those pages. I favorably recommend this book for those of you who enjoy this genre.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Complex world building and great romance By Caillean Without a Front I - The Producer’s Challenge is a very well written mixture of several genres. The setting on an alien world with a very complex empathic culture is obviously science fiction, but it feels more like epic fantasy to me, just with modern and sometimes strange, but always interesting, technology. Part of the story is a political intrigue, we follow the world leader in the process of making her decisions and implementing them and a conspiracy against her is hinted at from the beginning and keeps the reader guessing. But there is romance as well and that part is central for the storyline. Some authors might have cut several subplots out of it and concentrated on one of them to market it better in a certain genre, but I really enjoyed reading such a complete story.I can’t really list all the aspects that make this novel a great read, but I try to mention the most important ones for me.- The world building really stands out from the masses with great detail and original ideas. I’ve seen books with empathy before, but never so elegantly implemented in all aspects of the culture. This part reminds me of Marion Zimmer Bradley’s Darkover Series, but I think that Fletcher Delancey is actually a technically better writer.- Lancer Tal is a fascinating character and I enjoyed reading about the political and private facets of her life. (And I helps that she is hot.)- The writer doesn’t ignore difficult ethical questions (caused by events in the prequel “The Caphenon”) and their practical applications.- The romance is heartwarming and at the same time surprisingly fast and deliciously slow.- The book is long, really long. You can spent hours getting lost in Alsea and this is only the first half.Thinks to consider before buying this book: - There is a prequel (The Caphenon). Some details about the world building might be easier to understand if you’ve read it first, but I believe you can enjoy this one without it. But why should you? It’s great as well. - This is part one. The second part is scheduled for November and the cliffhanger is close to torture. But I’m sure the waiting will be worth it.I’ve tremendously enjoyed reading this book and immediately started rereading its prequel and this one again to shorten the wait for the next one.

"The Caphenon" was no fluke for Ms Delancey and reading this book was frustrating only in the sense that I was busy and could not devour the story as I wished.World building: She's done the creating with zeal and seemingly has thought of everything when it comes to describing a world that is similar to ours, but with the vital difference that everyone is in a caste of some kind, and everyone, to varying degrees is empathetic. This empathy is not described as 'mind reading' but comes fairly close in this.Ms Delancey has also created another miracle: a book detailing politics on a world scale, as the main character is the world leader of Alsea. Much of this describes the petty stuff to which we are accustomed, in the US anyway, but the side explanations and the background stories to the politics brings a familiarity to this world of Alsea. Nothing is wasted in any of the characters or their dialogue and impact.So, the Lancer of the planet, Andira, begins a relationship and what pure magic that becomes in this writer's hands. The concepts of 'joining' and 'sharing' are remarkable and left me envious. This Andira is the whole package of adjectives and her Salomen is left to the imagination, for now, as far as her true potential, but we know she is a MATCH for Andira, and a powerful Tyree.The author has men and women on equal footing and placement in the story. There is no walls between the sexes and they are not limited as to what they can do with their lives except for their level of empathy.I loved this story and think Fletcher Delancey is a gifted writer.

I enjoyed it immensely, hence the five stars. However, of the three books in the trilogy, this is my least favorite. I couldn’t escape the frustration that something very important was missing.Where was Salomen’s point-of-view?I realize the story is restricted to a limited third-person - namely, Andira Tal - with only occasional, brief trips into another secondary character’s mind. But Salomen is by no means secondary. She is a sweeping, essential protagonist. I needed to see her thoughts. And I did not - not really.I watched Andira’s image of Salomen evolve in wonderful detail. I watched the self-righteous, disagreeable and unattractive Raiz Opah transform into the oh-so sympathetic, beautiful and alluring Salomen. Watching Andira fall in love with Salomen was simply perfect. But it was always Andira’s view, her bias, regardless of the empathy.I wanted to see that triumph of discovery from Salomen’s perspective, to watch her thoughts as the facade of impervious grandiosity that is the Lancer of Alsea falls away, and watch her as she finds instead a lonely, idealistic heart in desperate need to love and be loved for who she truly is.The thoughts from Andira about what Salomen feels is a facsimile. No matter how empathetic she is, we are still seeing Salomen’s thoughts and emotions through Tal’s interpretations of them. I wanted to know Salomen’s mind from the inside, not through a tyree conduit. I felt a bit cheated. It just did not work for me.Call me too Gaian.

By Jon This book is written very well and covers great topics that are usually absent from similar programming language books. However, I cannot recommend this book as it is already outdated. Professional Swift was released just two months ago, and with Swift 2.0 released around the same time, many of the book's examples are now full of deprecated code. I believe the author could post updates that would make the code in the book usable, but as of now he has not done so.It should be stated again that the book is very easy to understand and well written. It is just already outdated. Save yourself the frustration and buy a book that is specifically about Swift 2, or wait for this book to be updated.
