Gently they come, to the man who waits, the children unknowing, of their dreadful fates... Everyone knows the story in Oldstone. Of the local myth that parents tell their children to make them shiver. Of a headless man who rises from the lake bed every 66 years and takes a child. Takes their head for his own. When Carl was a young boy, his older brother went missing. Surely the story can't be true? The need to find out the truth will become a lifelong obsession...

It freaked me out and I was happy that I had the lights on while I read it...I love anything scary but I'm not into too much graphic gore and this story had just the right amount to scare me but not gross me out. I'll be comfortable sharing it with my teens (they love a good horror story too).

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. somewhat sad, and creepy in some places By Rebecca L. Treadway Every town has an urban legend of some sort with neighborhood kids playing that game of "dare to find out what's inside that creepy house". (I think every neighborhood everywhere has at least one creepy house! :p) ) In this case, such a dare results in truth and tragedy (won't spoil it) of a character - who then spends a lifetime coming full circle to confront the town's legend. It's a bit spooky, somewhat sad, and creepy in some places. Nice to read something that relies on atmosphere instead of blood and guts. It has British slang but wasn't hard to figure out - and the feel of the place was conveyed nicely. Though I grew up in a small city - we had spooky stories too, and kids around the block who would roam around looking for the boogey man. This story carries a certain nostalgia to that end. :-) Really liked it!

I would definitely recommend, especially if you are looking forward to something a little shorter than usual. Read it with the lights on!

A Tale of Tournai Legends tell of large cats defending the principality of Tournai, but such creatures have been lost to time. Or have they? Prince Philip inherited the throne at a young age, and since then, his life has centered around ruling his country and resisting those pressuring him to take a wife and conceive an heir—forcing him to hide his attraction to men. When kind-hearted Amory is offered to the prince in exchange for more time for Amory’s father to complete a commission, both Philip and Amory are horrified. But Philip agrees to keep Amory at the palace, where they gradually become friends, then lovers. For the first time in his life, Philip is free to share not only his heart, but the magical shape-shifting ability that runs in the royal bloodline. Neither Amory nor Philip imagined falling in love, and they certainly don’t expect the lengths those who oppose their relationship will go to keep them apart—maybe even resorting to murder.

12 of 12 people found the following review helpful. A Surprise Worthwhile By ShinyNickel ** READER WARNING: At the end of my review (there will be a warning before it appears) is a mild spoiler but I feel it should have been mentioned in the description as it is a very surprising/polarizing addition to the story that may affect your wish to continue. Personally, it was an appreciated addition that I would have enjoyed seeing more heavily featured and to me, was the best part of the storyline**3.5 Stars"The Prince's Consort" was something of a boredom-fueled purchase- I'd never read anything by this author before nor was I exactly overcome with the "must-read-right-now"s by the summary. But, it was a Dreamspinner's Press book and I've found they are consistently satisfying...so, I went all impulsive and gave it a shot (yessss, revel in my rebel spirit!).And, I am glad I did.It isn't a flawless book, but it was super enjoyable. The MCs, Prince Philip and Amory, are very likeable. No secret pasts or dramatic dark sides lurking about, and against-all-odds they are both genuine, honest and faithful individuals. It's an instant relationship that burns gently into devotion and love. There is sex, but just like our heroes, it is pretty tame.It does run a bit long and seems to suffer a bit of an identity issue- is it a romance? Definitely. A shifter story? Barely. Magical with sorcerers and the like? Surprisingly. A crime mystery? Yeah, but a pretty obvious one. That isn't to say a book can't contain so many elements and be successful, but it sometimes felt like things were added to further along the plot, like more of a device rather than an organic progression. Even being aware of this, I liked it. It needed a clearer understanding of its own intended plan, but it didn't truly take away from liking it. Basically, I'm looking forward to the next book. Maybe by then the author will have hit her stride, defined her objective and stuck to it.Also, I felt it was strange how Amory's father's ambition was the catalyst to Philip and Amory meeting one another and yet his storyline was never realized. He made one half hearted effort of being a big bad and then sort of chickened out...I guess it's just another example of all these half formed tangents.*Now the spoiler and my favorite element*So, this is an mpreg story- you know, dudes who have babies. For some absolutely unknown reason, I relish these so I was stunned AND thrilled to find it in "The Prince's Consort." I think part about what is so appealing about mpreg books are that they are radical and racy, but also that they imbue the character with a mixture of vulnerability and strength that is titillating and touching. And, sadly, a good mpreg m/m book is the rarity. For the most part, this is one of the rare ones. So, in this, the author was tremendously successful. She presented an entirely plausible scenario for how such a thing could occur and even why it should. It resolved many issues for our MCs and made me insanely happy. So, yeah. This was good stuff.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. A few things... By Em So, let me first by saying that this book is closer to a 3.5 than a 3, but I did not like it enough to give it a 4 star rating. While I did enjoy this book enough to read and finish, there were certain issues I had, actually several issues I had that made warranted the 3 star rating.1. The instalove. And not just "maybe I love him, maybe I don't" instalove. It was like Phillip met Amory and then decided he needed to be with him. Willing to anger his family, and possibly dishonor his name for a complete stranger? I'm sorry. But no. Then Amory decides within the first day after deciding to be a complete strangers lover that he has to make their relationship work in order to be there for Prince so he won't be lonely anymore. Really? REALLY? Never mind the fact that Amory actually states that he's in love with Armory 3 weeks later. By the time Philip asked Amory to marry him I'd already accepted these two were delusional.2. The pacing. So, usually when an author sets a pace, they're consistent. Not the case here. We went from a day to day play by play, to skip a few weeks, to skip a few months, to back to day to day. Maddening. I wouldn't mind it so much if long periods of time were covered. But this books covers a year's time span. LITERALLY. They met, had sex, mosied around for like 3 months and then Philip was asking Amory to marry him. Days later they were talking about children. Ok. Sure.3. The m-preg. I actually enjoy reading m-preg. It's something that isn't done very often or very well, so when I see a book with a decent star rating, I take a chance and purchase. While the reason behind the m-preg was plausible in the magical world, the pacing during the actual pregnancy was so warped I barely had time to blink and the baby was born. I guess what I'm saying is, there wasn't much of an actual pregnancy. I thought, okay, well maybe she'll let us see some family life once the baby is here. Nope. Fade to black as they're holding the baby together for the first time. Sweet, but not fulfilling as far as an m-preg is concerned. At least not for me.There are many good things about the novel as well. The characters were interesting. The side affair between Tristan and Philip's cousin intrigued me as well. I liked the easy relationship the characters had. No over the top agnst. I usually like novels with sexually explicit scenes, but honestly, the writing was so fluffy I was glad they were glossed over. Most of the adversity came from the outside rather than within. I usually read more dramatic romances, but this was light, cute and fluffy. Read it in two days though I probably could have finished sooner had the pacing been better, but I still enjoyed it.

This is the most romantic romance (if that makes sense!) I've read in quite some time--candles, castles, gorgeous rides through the countryside--all the good stuff! Phillip and Amory fight to overcome the social obstacles presented by those around them while their love deepens. This couple is absolutely dedicated to one other and have the kind of relationship most of us can only dream of. :)

By Robin Ramsey I used my Kindle dictionary for some of the more archaic words, so I learned about an interesting story from Egypt and increased by vocabulary at the same time. This is a story of foolishness, jealousy, power, and sacrifice.

Best Ebook PDF Reading Science Stories: Narrative Tales of Science Adventurers, by Joy Hakim

Reading Science Stories is a book meant to celebrate nonfiction reading, especially narrative nonfiction, as a vehicle for understanding the world around us. We live in what is the greatest scientific era in all of human history, it also happens to be an Information Age, and nonfiction is a great medium for explanations, but many of our schools and book clubs are still mostly focused on fiction. That is changing with the understanding that narrative nonfiction can be as gripping as a novel. In this book Joy Hakim provides a series of stories about some of history’s great explorers: mathematicians and scientists trying to discover how the universe works. There’s Archimedes, tasked with figuring out if the king was cheated when he gave his jeweler a chunk of gold to make a crown. Did the jeweler mix silver with the gold so some would be left for his own use? Read the book and you’ll know what happened. Then there is Vesalius who dissected mice as a kid and expects, as a medical student, to cut into human cadavers. But that isn’t done in the med schools of his time. What does he do? Read his story and find out. Or you can learn about Einstein, who wouldn’t do what his teachers expected, whether he was in high school or graduate school. The teachers were not amused and wrote no recommendations. Einstein’s parents anguished over their son’s attitude and his inability to get a good job as almost all his classmates did. Mostly this book is meant to make it clear that science is not just for scientists. It’s a story that stretches through human history impacting all of us. Scientists want to know how the world and its inhabitants function. Over time their inquiries, experiments, and hard work have brought us to the astonishing world we live in. The 22 stories in this book provide a peek at the people and processes that have helped make our universe understandable.

Reading Science Stories: Narrative Tales of Science Adventurers, by Joy Hakim

Review Misunderstood. Ostracized. Passionate. Determined. These are just some of the traits of the scientists portrayed in Joy Hakim's e-book entitled Reading Science Stories: Narrative Tales of Scientific Adventurers. Hakim, a well-noted author whose previous works eloquently demonstrate the intersection of science and history, provides middle and secondary school readers with captivating stories about both the accomplishments and struggles of significant scientists. Middle and secondary science teachers who are seeking resources to support content-area Common Core ELA and Literacy standards and add a human dimension to discussions of scientific discoveries will find this book quite useful. Quotes from or about the scientists start each chapter, providing an opportunity for analyzing and interpreting text. What "certainties" are students learning today that will be seen as naive by the next generation? A final message of this book is how discoveries were often under-appreciated, or their value even unknown, during the lives of the scientists to whom we now give such significant accolades. Sometimes the scientists were ostracized, ridiculed, or even condemned to death because of their seemingly outlandish ideas, and yet their determination and passion for understanding thankfully did not waiver. Our students today will be the scientists who continue this exploration, and they can greatly benefit from reading the stories of the scientists on whose shoulders they will stand. - Kristin Rearden, NSTA Recommends

The purpose of the book, I gather, is to interest younger people in science and I think that it will do this very well. Author Joy Hakim wrote a series of fun, intelligent and very conversational stories that will surely interest children in science. Hakim’s writing is very friendly and even though I have formal science training, I still enjoyed the stories. The major gap in the book is the lack of stories on biology. I know that this book is derived from a series of three books and it can’t have everything in it, but since evolution is central to all of biology, it’s absence is notable. Hakim mentions that unlike physics, biology has no set of central equations, but evolution comes remarkably close. Nonetheless I recommend this book for anyone interested in science who would like a light read or for parent and teachers who want to interest their children in science.

It took a while (we were still adjusting to a recent move) to use it, but I was so happy when we did. The stories are fascinating (even for me) and my kids have loved having it as part of their education. I use it for the 3rd grader (who asks me a ton of questions about the stories-fortunately almost every question is answered by the book), the 6th grader (who asks to do those stories first and will frequently draw pictures to describe the stories), and my 8th grader (who took my kindle fire and read all of them during the first weekend we started it!). I'm so thankful to this book because I feel like it's really important to make children love science for the process and the people and this book gives them this.

From the first stock markets of Amsterdam,London, and New York to the billions of electronic commerce transactions today, privately produced and enforced economic regulations are more common, more effective, and more promising than commonly considered. In Private Governance, prominent economist Edward Stringham presents case studies of the various forms of private enforcement, self-governance, or self-regulation among private groups or individuals that fill a void that government enforcement cannot. Through analytical narratives the book provides a close examination of the world's first stock markets, key elements of which were unenforceable by law; the community of Celebration, Florida, and other private communities that show how public goods can be bundled with land and provided more effectively; and the millions of credit-card transactions that occur daily and are regulated by private governance. Private Governance ultimately argues that while potential problems of private governance, such as fraud, are pervasive, so are the solutions it presents, and that much of what is orderly in the economy can be attributed to private groups and individuals. With meticulous research, Stringham demonstrates that private governance is a far more common source of order than most people realize, and that private parties have incentives to devise different mechanisms for eliminating unwanted behavior.Private Governance documents numerous examples of private order throughout history to illustrate how private governance is more resilient to internal and external pressure than is commonly believed. Stringham discusses why private governance has economic and social advantages over relying on government regulations and laws, and explores the different mechanisms that enable private governance, including sorting, reputation, assurance, and other bonding mechanisms. Challenging and rigorously-written, Private Governance will make a compelling read for those with an interest in economics, political philosophy, and the history of current Wall Street regulations.

Private Governance: Creating Order in Economic and Social Life, by Edward Peter Stringham

Review "Private Governance is a masterpiece of economic, philosophical, and legal reasoning that will shake progressive ideology to its foundations, and, if read by enough young people, dispatch it to a waiting grave." Andrew Napolitano, Fox News

"Stringham dispels state-worshipping fiction with historical fact to show how good governance has preceded Leviathan, ignores it when necessary, and can surpass it when it fails." Peter Thiel, Entrepreneur

"If you read this book you will have to readjust what you think is possible. A masterful account that mixes history, theory, and a deep understanding of what contracts really mean." Michael Munger, Duke University

"The dominant view in economic and political theory is that markets can only exist in the 'shadow of the state.' This superb volume challenges this contention head on." Mark Pennington, King's College London

"Explains how private governance can work in theory and carefully details a series of real-world case studies to illustrate how it actually works. Stringham writes so well that this book should be appreciated and enjoyed by academics and non-academics alike." Bruce Benson, Florida State University

"The theory and practice of private provision of protection, security, and adjudication has a long and distinguished history. Private Governance is an extremely important contribution to understanding this issue." Leonard Liggio, Institute for Humane Studies

"Adam Smith brought us the 'invisible hand.' Now, Stringham brings us 'private governance.' Am I going too far in comparing Stringham to Smith? Maybe so, but it is because Smith does not deserve to be mentioned in the same sentence as Stringham. Read this book (that's an order!)." Walter Block, Loyola University-New Orleans

"Brimming with surprises and intellectual curiosity. Stringham turns the conventional wisdom on its head, in delightful and convincing fashion." Tom Woods, Historian

"Masterfully weaves economic analysis with little-known history and elegant storytelling to demonstrate the power of individuals to create order without law or government. Essential reading for policy-makers, academics, and anyone else with questions about the power of freedom." Marcus Cole, Stanford University

About the Author Edward Peter Stringham is the Davis Professor of Economic Organizations and Innovation at Trinity College, Hartford, Connecticut. Stringham is president of the Society for the Development of Austrian Economics, former president of the Association of Private Enterprise Education, editor of the Journal of Private Enterprise, editor of two books, and author of more than sixty journal articles, book chapters, and policy studies. His work has been discussed on more than 100 broadcast stations, including CBS, CNBC, CNN, Fox, Headline News, NPR, and MTV.

How is eBay like the Amsterdam Bourse? Do you believe that derivatives are a modern financial tool? Then prepare to learn. Ed Stringham weaves case studies in storytelling ways. He not only answers the above questions masterfully, but also makes the persuasive case that markets precede governments, markets help make people moral, and situations are more difficult just because of government.

This book explores the wide variety of private governance solutions that exist By William Kiely Ed Stringham's "Private Governance" was the first libertarian / anarcho-capitalist book I have read in two years. My favorite book in the genre by far is still Michael Huemer's The Problem of Political Authority: An Examination of the Right to Coerce and the Duty to Obey, which I highly recommend if you're considering reading a book in this genre. (Note: I'm giving "Private Governance" 4/5 stars only because it doesn't live up to the high standard set by Huemer.)That said, Stringham's book provides a lot of insight that Huemer doesn't get to.As someone who is already a libertarian anarchist (and as a non-economist), the most valuable insights I got out of "Private Governance" were those related to seeing the extent to which private governance exists in all societies (even statist ones) to varying degrees and the extent to which legal centrism ("the idea that order in the world depends on and is attributable to government law") is false.Stringham writes: "Although not legal centralists in the traditional sense, many radical libertarians are legal centralists of a sort who simply substitute private enforcers for government enforcers of law. If a potential problem comes up, the libertarian legal centralist is prone to say, “That would be illegal in my ideal world.” Yet even the best private police or courts might not be able to solve a problem in a cost-effective way, so private parties may have to live with certain trade-offs or seek alternative solutions.""Private Governance" explores these trade-offs and alternative solutions--creative solutions that even many anarcho-capitalists and other free market thinkers (who now seem to me as well to give legal centrism too much credit) don't seem to be aware of or don't mention as much as they should.Education about these many kinds of private governance are important in part because the more that people learn about the large variety of possible private solutions to problems, the less likely they will be to assume/believe (like nearly everyone mistakenly does) that government intervention to try to solve these problems is beneficial or necessary.Stringham's book definitely increased my awareness and appreciation of private governance solutions to problems. This was not the first time that my beliefs about how well private actors could solve problems was changed in this direction. Rather, my views have shifted further in this direction a great deal over time as my views changed from default-statism to minarchist libertarianism to anarchist-libertarianism (and then even kept shifting further from legal centrism even after I became an anarchist). While my views on this hadn't changed much lately, this book definitely shifted my beliefs further. And then: In his last chapter Stringham claims to have just skimmed the surface of examples of private governance with his exploration in his book, and I believe him. Then he writes: "In many cases, solutions do not exist, or have yet to be invented. For example, cavemen, and for that matter the vast majority of people in human history, did not have the luxury of the New York Cotton Exchange or Chicago Mercantile Exchange acting as rule-enforcing clearinghouse. Such is the world. But innovations are always popping up, and a researcher can help document them rather than assume that markets are made possible by declarations of law."So now I am lead to believe that more voluntary, private solutions to problems currently exist (and and can exist--they just need to be invented) than I will ever be aware of. And further, to the extent to which I or others believe they don't exist, we are probably simply not looking hard enough or not being imaginative enough. This is an important lesson that "Private Governance" teaches.

A New Masterwork of Anarcho-Libertarian Thought By Rob A masterwork, which will take its place in the canon of Anarcho-Libertarian thought, and which people will be referring to throughout the ages. A thorough and cogent examination of the relative merits of private justice, with a fascinating review of private justice systems throughout history, which has the power to advance conversations of these issues. My sole complaint about the book is directed at Oxford University Press -- Why is the print so excruciatingly small? The manner in which this book is printed makes it very difficult to read, and if the content were not so fascinating might have led me to put it down. Please do a better job on subsequent printing. This material deserves a thicker volume.

In 1993, the nation exploded into anti-same sex marriage fervor when the Hawaii Supreme Court issued its decision to support marriage equality for gay and lesbian couples. Opponents feared that all children, but especially those raised by lesbian or gay couples, would be harmed by the possibility of same-sex marriage, and warned of the consequences for society at large. Congress swiftly enacted the Defense of Marriage Act, defining marriage as between a man and a woman, and many states followed suit. Almost a decade before the Hawaii court issued its decision, however, several courts in multiple states had granted gay and lesbian couples co-parenting status, permitting each individual in the couple to be legally recognized as joint parents over their children. By 2006, advocates in half the states had secured court decisions supporting gay and lesbian co-parenting, and incurred far fewer public reprisals than on the marriage front. What accounts for the stark difference in reactions to two contemporaneous same-sex family policy fights? In Below the Radar, Alison Gash argues that advocacy visibility has played a significant role in determining whether advocacy efforts become mired in conflict or bypass hostile backlash politics. Same-sex parenting advocates are not alone in crafting low-visibility advocacy strategies to ward off opposition efforts. Those who operate, reside in, and advocate for group homes serving individuals with disabilities have also used below-the-radar strategies to diminish the damage cause by NIMBY ("not in my back yard") responses to their requests to move into single-family neighborhoods. Property owners have resorted to slander, subterfuge, or even arson to discourage group homes from locating in their neighborhoods, and for some advocates, secrecy provides the best elixir. Not every fight for civil rights grabs headlines, but sometimes, this is by design. Gash's groundbreaking analyses of these strategies provide a glimpse of the prophylactic and palliative potential of low-visibility advocacy.

Review "Based on a rich new history of debates surrounding civil rights struggles, Below the Radar revises the conventional wisdom that rights crusaders gained ground only by shifting from the court of law to the court of public opinion. Gash shows that low-profile legal advocacy proved an essential strategy for marginalized groups that might otherwise have faced crippling backlash, and inspires us to reconsider not just the relationship between the courts and social change but also the role of surreptitiousness in securing the promise of an open democracy." -- Jacob S. Hacker, Yale University

"A bold and innovative study of two crucial civil rights struggles, same-sex parenting and group home advocacy-wherein advocates largely intentionally avoided the sort of hostile reaction that often accompanies court decisions in civil rights cases-Below the Radar persuasively demonstrates that in some settings, low-visibility strategies may well be the most effective way to promote social justice."-Kimberlé W. Crenshaw, UCLA School of Law

"For decades, scholars of law and politics have studied how advocates use public interest litigation to bring visibility and public support to struggles for justice. Gash's outstanding book reveals the silent mirror image of this phenomenon, exploring how quiet but successful campaigns for legal reform can build the foundation for new rights structures-or avert a destructive backlash against the disempowered group these advocates represent." -- Julie Novkov, University at Albany, SUNY

"While same-sex marriage litigation was getting all the headlines, Alison Gash shows that a quieter legal campaign for the rights of gays and lesbians to adopt children was advancing almost unnoticed. With this well-written, incisive book, Gash has added a new dimension to the study of courts and social policy." -- Tom Burke, Wellesley College

"In this engagingly written book, Alison Gash lays out a thoughtful and provocative analysis of the politics of backlash. Her unwinding of this phenomenon is an invaluable contribution that should significantly influence how we think about using litigation to achieve social change." -- Stephen Engel, Bates College

"A groundbreaking study that compares the efficacy of high and low visibility legal strategies in civil rights struggles. Insightful, elegantly written, and powerfully argued, Below the Radar is essential reading for anyone interested in understanding the politics of rights, litigation , and social movements in the United States and beyond." -- Jeb Barnes, University of Southern California

"Below the Radar tells two important, interesting, and little-known stories, and it uses those stories to make an important theoretical contribution to a major scholarly debateEL The first deals with parenting-equality advocacy on behalf of gays and lesbians, the second with group homes for people with disabilities or recovering from addictions. Each is interesting on its own, and each is well told." -- Michigan Law Review

We hear so much about how people fight to oppose civil rights but we don't hear nearly as much about how people working for civil rights deal with the opposition. This book provides riveting facts about how LGBTQ advocates and people living in group homes handle opposition through first-hand accounts from those on the front line. A great book especially for those wanting some "behind the scenes" details about the road to marriage equality.

Gash serves as both historian and story teller, and her analysis can be valuable to any group fighting for its civil rights. An easily readable style, with real life examples and studies that bring the struggles and successes to life.

AlthoughI thought I already knew a lot about the issues, I soon realized that I only saw and understood the tip of them. Like an iceberg, the greater history of the advocacy for LBGT rights lay far, far below the public's awareness. In addition, Dr Gash's description of the Group Home movement to provide safe and life-affirming environments for individuals with mental and physical disabilities also struck home. Very recently one a group home established in my own small neighborhoodDr Gash provides the history and legal journey of both these topics in a rich, fact-based way that is very readable and informative for the general as well as the academic community. She lays out the rational for using the many structures available to us via the American constitution, the courts and pooling together the resources of disparate groups with overlapping goals, to sanely and quietly move us as a country that fulfills the promise of tolerant accepting and diverse nation.
