On the southern tip of the Yelar Peninsula, towering over the beach cliffs of the Desi Sea, lies the Defender Academy, the highly advanced military complex of the country of Zedric. Near the top of the ranks is Izzy Gildspine, Golden Guardian of the Zyearth Defenders. Izzy’s not sure she deserves her title. Her healing powers are strong, though they’re nothing compared to the elemental powers of her partner, Matt Azure. But she can’t let her doubts get in the way of her job. The Defenders hold up the Golden Guardians as legends and she has to make sure she lives up to that expectation. However, Izzy’s fears come true after a routine flight spirals into an out-of-control crash on a contaminated island campground, crawling with invincible monsters. To make matters worse, she and Matt find a friend and fellow Defender in the woods, half mad after being hounded for days by a foreign invader controlling the strange creatures. The horror becomes personal when Matt is enslaved by their foe, forcing Izzy to make a terrible choice. Should she follow her heart and save him, or perform her Golden Guardian duty and kill him? The fate of all Zyearth hangs in the balance and she must decide soon before the choice is made for her.

The Stolen Guardian (The Zyearth Chronicles Book 1), by R. A. Meenan

About the Author R. A. Meenan was born in London during the golden age of science fiction, but somehow time traveled to the Modern Era (some say a mad man with a blue box was involved). She was dropped on the doorstep of a house owned by anthropomorphic cats and though they were disappointed she didn't have furry ears and a tail, they took her in to teach her the ways of elemental magic. After setting fire to her furry cat friends' tails one too many times (final score – fire: 2612, cat's tails: 0) they called an exterminator and sent her out on her way. Now an adult (physically, not mentally), she ride-hops intergalactic military spacecraft, combing the outer reaches of space and time, writing science fiction and urban fantasy stories based on her experiences. She's also hoping to find the perfect cup of coffee and a better way to grow dinosaurs. Humans kind of look at her funny, but she's managed to make herself an honorary ambassador for furry and anthropomorphic aliens and space dragons. She careful feeds and brushes her wonderful husband Joe and the pair have four furry children (which are really cats, but don't tell them that). She also spends her spare time teaching essay-writing haters, molding them into people resembling Actual Students and Lovers of English. She may not win the hearts of stiff military men or students who want good grades for no effort, but she certainly captures the spirit and imagination of time travelers, magic users, nerds, Students-In-Training, and fantasy lovers.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Both Straightforward And Convoluted By Kristopher M. Schnee I'm on the fence between 3 and 4 stars on this. (If you've seen my other reviews, I gave 3 to a book I barely finished, out of a misguided desire to avoid being too negative.) Short answer is, "Yeah, it's all right and you might enjoy it." Here's my thinking:It's a straightforward action story in the sense that there's a bad guy on the loose and some good guys team up to stop him. It's convoluted in that, in one fight, we see several flavors of gem-related magic plus a rare boosted version, plus summoning of seven or so phoenixes with names and elements, plus a mental/physical fusion, mind control, magically enslaved blobs, plus (spoiler) magic that introduces a whole other level of complexity. I sometimes got the sense that the plot was needlessly complicated by characters not talking. "Would the plot change," I ask, "if these people had a sixty-second frank conversation?" In this case they fail to confer until halfway through the book, about things like "Where is this bad guy from? Who's controlling him and why?" And even then, half the time the answer is "Hmmph! I refuse to compare notes." There are also many moments where characters repeat "That's impossible!" There's also a bit of obfuscation because of the villains' titles; if they'd been translated then the heroes probably would've been more alarmed. The fusion between several characters is a tough thing to write well, because it means constantly tracking who's controlling the shared body and how they conflict or cooperate. The author pulls it off, partly with cues like changing eye color. There's some world-building and I always like that, but we mostly see one military organization and hints of a conflict on another planet. The appendix says that this military, part of a "small country", occasionally does "intergalactic missions". Fortunately that silly detail doesn't show up in the story itself, in which space travel exists but seems rare enough that visitors from a particular planet haven't been seen for a long time.My understanding is that this book originally grew from, of all things, "Sonic the Hedgehog" fanfiction. I can't make fun of this (especially if you know my own work) but should comment. The bad: the characters' species isn't relevant to the story, other than one character having a racial vendetta. Also, sometimes it becomes obvious, as when a humanoid with quills is clutching a fist-size magic gem and saying vague things about channeling its power. The good: the author grows the story beyond those roots, showing a different world.I liked the twist about why the villain is using this particular henchman, and would've liked to see more done with that information. Unfortunately it seems meant for a sequel, as implied by the "book 1" subtitle. I didn't feel like the central conflict actually ended, which leaves the story feeling incomplete. The difference between a complete story that has a sequel, and a story that's been chopped into several books (as by Tolkien's publisher) is whether the main problem is solved and a new one comes along, or whether the heroes have only won a reprieve. This book is mostly in the second category because while the villain ends with fewer powers, he could probably snatch the critical one right back and get on with what he was doing. (I now feel a bit guilty of writing this way myself.)So, overall: You might like this story. I have some problems with it, but it passes the basic test of "did I enjoy this?". I will give it a 3 to dissent a bit from the 5-star ratings -- but the 1-star one is off base too, because it's readable and competently done.

The chapters are short, and the pose flows nicely. It still remained detailed and clear, which made the story easy to read. The characters are believable and most are likable, as well. Mrs. Meenan has created a unique world and has filled it with species that are just as unique. One thing I would like to know more about is how the gems are assigned to those that used them. What I found confusing was towards the end of the book, but, as I posted in the beginning, I won't post spoilers in this review. I just had difficulty keeping the characters straight. This does bog the plot down towards the end, but it picks back up. There are a few typos, mainly on how “Cast” is spelled in the book. There are a few times where it's spelled “Kast”. I'm not sure if it's been changed at the time of this review, though.Overall, I found this a nice blend of Science Fiction and Fantasy. Despite the flaws I saw in the story, I still enjoyed reading it and I would definitely recommend it! As far as I know there is short story coming out soon, and I'm looking forward to that, as well!

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. I really fell in love with the strong emotions By Karen Rees Zyearth is an edge of your seat thrill ride. R.A. Meenan is an imaginative writer that pulls you into her world. The story is deep enough for adults but clean enough for teens. The alien world and variety of characters and species is both intriguing and lends itself well to the story. Her characters are very 3d and memorable. I really fell in love with the strong emotions, morals and personalities that each character carried. Izzy, Darvin, Lance and Aric are my personal favorites. The short chapter sizes make it an easy read on the go as most chapters are 3~6 pages in length. I look forward to getting to know more of her loveable characters and see them continue to grow in strength in future novels of this series.

Unfortunately it's raining, so her more-practical family members all refuse to participate -- until Lana moves her parade indoors and begins marching up and down the hallway. She's having so much fun, how can everyone not join in?The text has a nice rhythm, and the illustrations have a fun, lively feel that really brings the story to life. While it's difficult to figure out exactly where Lana's imagination begins and reality ends, that's fairly typical for children her age, so it's easier to roll with the uncertainty. Fanciful children who've ever felt hemmed-in by more grounded elders are especially likely to relate to Lana's plight.

We first got this book from a library rolling reader at daycare. We have a 28 month old that we read to her. It's very catchy and you find yourself repeating the main part of it over and over. Our daughter of course can't read yet but she'll turn the pages and try to make the same sounds that we do when reading it.Ratta tat tat!.

Dogs are part of a family just like humans, which makes it even ethical to feed the dog properly. Luckily I found the book Dog Food Recipes to help me out with some homemade food.It could be hard for the average dog owner to make sure dogs get the right amounts of protein, fats, vitamins and minerals, which is where this book arrives for help. The different ingredient sources are clearly categorized so it's easy to put together a food package for your dog by using the guidelines in the book. Most importantly, the book also contains a section with "no-no" foods you never can feed a dog with. Great! The recipes are easy to follow and realize, which is a plus. And your dog will have a diet with variety, not just the same food all over again. The book is excellent for fresh dog-owners and those who want to change the dog's diet to a healthier direction. Dog Food Recipes is a great and doggy-friendly book, which your dog will certainly appreciate. Woof!

This isn't a problem with me but ever since some of my dogs have matured and have puppies, I realized that I need to find new healthy foods to feed the mother and their puppies. There are so many things which I liked about this book. First thing is that it starts with the question why make our own dog food which is of course, very important for dog lovers like me.The second thing I like or should I say, I love about this book unlike any other book for dog foods is that it highlights how often we should feed our dog depending on their ages. The last but not the least is that it includes all the foods I should avoid. Moreover, I also like how the author was able to include some healthy foods for newborn puppies which can be made my simply mixing some recipes mentioned into the blender. The recipes were so easy to prepare which is very efficient for me.I have attached a picture of my asleep dog. She just finished eating her meal and feeding her puppies.

Owing a pet is not only a chance for backyard games, but, a huge responsibility, too. My present will be accompanied by the puppy's house, a vet exam, and this great guide on what and how to feed your puppy. This is the basic information a new pet owner has to have, the first step towards growing a happy and healthy dog. As I take extra care of my eating routine, I take care of the feeding routine of my young animal.

(See scale photo next to Sharpie pen.) Very nice illustrations by a favorite artist of mine. (Find her on Etsy!) Oddly, there's an autumn quote sandwiched between the months of May & June (see photo). Still, I love it- great quality for a great price.

I'm picky when it comes to my planner but this is the 2nd year I'll be using them, I discovered them last year. It includes monthly calendar and then weekly calendars also so you can look at the month ahead but also makes notes every week. Super cute!

Clover By Janeifer Drew It is a shame that Susan Coolidge's books are either unheard of or out of print. If you enjoyed reading "What Katy Did", "What Katy Did at School", and "What Katy Did Next", you will love "Clover". In it, we read of our beloved Katy's marriage, and our nearly as beloved Clover's experiences in Colorado. It was an enjoyable read, although short, and I am hoping that "In the High Valley" (the final book in the series) will be re-published some time soon.

A book for all ages By akompano Publisher's note: Sarah Chauncey Woolsey (aka Susan Coolidge; 1835-1905): Her childhood and adolescence provided the background for her most famous work, the five books of the "Katy" series (each a complete story in itself). "Clover," first published in 1888, is the fourth book of this popular family series for adolescent and adult readers alike.

Farmer I purchased this book in paperback - I can't comment on any other versions - and there are SO many spelling, punctuation and publishing errors it is almost impossible to read. There are sentences that just end at the end of the line. We began to mark them and found oftentimes more than 15 errors per page. This book was obviously not proofread or there were errors in the final publishing. This review isn't against the book - it's a wonderful story. But against the publisher - General Books, LLC. Please ensure that you get an edition NOT from this publisher.

It offers real talk on how to approach the future, given the changes in the economic landscape that are often ignored, even by colleges. The authors address the new kinds of jobs that are available in a heavily technological era. I especially enjoyed the sections on how to build credibility outside of academics. This is a complex subject, but it's laid out clearly. In fact, it's so well written that even as a 38-year-old professional already into a couple different careers, I enjoyed reading it. All along, I was wishing I'd had a book like this to read when I was considering college. It's not that I wasn't exposed to this kind of responsible thinking, it's that it wasn't presented to me in the lively and realistic way that Jelski and George present it.

Park This book is a valuable resource for any prospective college student or recent grad, offering a refreshingly honest perspective on what it takes to be successful in today's--and tomorrow's--job market. Highly recommend it!

Wizard White Beard had a plan, but destiny had something else in mind . . . After 1,001 years of hostilities among the six—er—seven kingdoms, Wizard White Beard proposes a non-violent alternative to war—a scavenger hunt—to determine the fate of all! The rules are clear: no weapons and no bloodshed. Just clean, honest competition. Simple enough, if only the contestants would follow them. With the fate of the world at stake, it’s up to Mongrel, an orphan with an unconventional upbringing, to intercede. Joined by a hodgepodge group of misfits, including a gentle giant, a magically challenged elf, a feisty female dwarf, and a reluctant wizard’s apprentice, Mongrel just might stand a chance of winning—if he can survive! A hilarious tale of magic, mayhem, and misadventure that turns the classic fantasy universe on its head. A must-read for anyone who enjoys comedic fantasy.

About the Author Comedian. Blogger. Coffee junkie. Incurable nerd. And now, author. The titles she is most proud of are sister, auntie, and friend. Growing up in a small town surrounded by cornfields, Kylie had nothing better to do than fantasize about unicorns and elves. As an adult, she still refuses to grow up, and spends most of her time creating stories of comedic fantasy. When she is not writing, which is hardly ever, Kylie enjoys reading, drinking coffee, and spending time with her family and friends. She also runs, although she does not enjoy it so much. Kylie currently resides in Indiana with her sister, nephew, horde of cats, and one very silly dog. The Wizards Gambit pays off By Amazon Customer Book One, The Wizard's Gambit, from "The Six-er-Seven Kingdoms," is the second book by comedic fantasy author Kylie Betzner. This tale follows the adventures of a boy called Mongrel, whose outlook on life has been shaped by his experiences growing up in many of the different kingdoms of the realm. An orphan, Mongrel sees life through the eyes of many different points of view, enabling him to draw his own conclusions of how the world "could" be. Thrust into a heated competition, the winner getting to decide the fate of the realm, Mongrel must find a way to bring together the six-er-seven kingdoms, if he is to see his vision of peace come to light. In the first half of the book, Kylie pulls together a colorful, witty, and often times hilarious cast of characters, set in a colorful, imaginative world. Think Shrek meets Bedrock, meets Monty Python. Her cast of characters brings together a diverse representation of fantasy and farce, mixed with real-world views and attitudes. The stage is set for a fantastic competition to see who will reign supreme. Kylie takes great care not to give the reader too much back story on her characters, but just enough to leave you wanting more. The second half of the book takes the reader on a fantastic adventure filled with magic, witty banter, deceit, and treachery, as representatives from each kingdom will do whatever it takes to find the prize that will bring them the opportunity to decide the fates of the other kingdoms. We also witness Kylie's characters endure a journey of internal growth, as they are forced to question their life-long beliefs. While still very entertaining, and delivering a message that change is inevitable if the world is to grow, the second half of the book, at times, feels a little rushed. However, Kylie still finds a way to pull everything together in the end, leaving the audience ready for more adventures in the six-er-seven kingdoms. I give it 4 stars.

The grammar and spelling are perfectly fine. I didn't find any typos, sentance fragments, or paragraph problems. There were no issues in the formatting other than the fact that footnotes on Kindle iPhone are terrible. That's not the fault of the author.I had really high hopes for this book and it really disappointed me. I was so excited when I bought it, and by the end I was slogging through just wanting to be done. If all of the technical aspects were fine then why the two stars? The storytelling in this book was a disaster. To begin with, the characters are all caricatures. I get that this book is meant to be a comedy poking fun at fantasy tropes. It comes to a point, though, where it's overwhelming. The characters need some depth and complexity, even in a comedy. The protagonist, Mongrel, doesn't learn anything. He doesn't change. The only conflict in the story boils down to predictable bickering. The resolution of that bickering is completely predictable with no surprise. There is no real antagonist but at the end, one is tacked on just for good measure, I suppose. The resolution dealing with her is more like brushing the whole thing under the rug.The climactic sequence and resolution of the main problem is resolved by a contrived of event. It removes all purpose for the rest of the story other than to create the predictable outcome that resolves some bickering between a handful of characters. After pushing myself to get through to the end, it was the biggest let down of all. There wasn't a big surprise or twist. The only character who may have been interesting is Margo. If there was more focus on a character like her, it would add a great deal to this story. My other comment is on the footnotes. The fact that they don't work well on iPhone aside, the fact that they exist at all was saddening. First off, the gimmick of adding an aside that breaks the fourth wall is mimicry of Terry Pratchett. Perhaps Ms. Betzner is hoping to honor his memory in some way by using his gimmick. Maybe she hasn't yet found her own confidence and voice, which is likely considering the other issues in the book. Either way, they didn't add anything to the story that couldn't have been said in the narrative itself. It may have been better, in fact, to do it that way.I hope that Ms. Betzner does continue to practice her storytelling. She clearly understands how to structure a novel, she just needs more work on plot and character development.

By michaelwisehart If the eye-catching Cover Art and the mouth-watering Description weren’t enough to encourage you to click the purchase button then you might want to press two fingers to the side of your neck or front of your wrist. It oftentimes annoys me to read reviews where the entire description is nothing more than an overview or synopsis of the story, intertwined with spoilers that are sure to irritate any who haven’t read the book as of yet … So I won’t do that. What I will do is regale you with the quality Ms Betzner’s writing: The fluidity of her prose is sure to keep your eyes rushing across each line of text. Her wit and love of the humorous pores out of each page, threatening to drown the reader in laughter. There were times I didn’t know if I should laugh or cry at the masterful way she took fantasy tropes, which many of us have not only grown up with but have used in our own writing, and twist them about to make the obvious stand out like a sour thumb. Her book is a single daisy sprouting betwixt a tomb of granite. It is refreshing to be able to sit back and enjoy a good laugh at the expense of a genre so many of us have grown to love and call our own. With more and more of the fantasy type turning ever so dark, it’s nice to find these little nuggets of gold amidst a sea of pyrite.I highly recommend the Wizard’s Gambit to anyone looking for the lighter side of fantasy. I look forward to reading what Ms. Betzner has in store for us in the next book.
