Since 1941, Rudolf Bultmann's program of demythologizing has been the subject of constant debate, widely held to indicate Bultmann's departure from the dialectical theology he once shared with Karl Barth. In the 1950s, Barth referred to their relationship as that of a whale and an elephant: incapable of meaningful communication. This study proposes a contrary reading of demythologizing as the hermeneutical fulfillment of dialectical theology on the basis of a reinterpretation of Barth's theological project. As such, the volume argues that dialectical theology is fundamentally governed by a missionary logic. Bultmann's hermeneutical theology extends this dialectical, missionary theology into the field of interpretation. Contrary to many critics, the message of God's saving work in Christ, and not modern science, funds Bultmann's hermeneutical program. Like Barth's own revolution, Bultmann's program addresses a false relation between gospel and culture. Negatively, demythologizing is a program of deconstantinizing, opposing the objectifying conflation of kerygma and culture that he calls "myth." Positively, demythologizing is a form of intercultural hermeneutics, composed of preunderstanding and self-understanding. Demythologizing is therefore a missionary hermeneutic of intercultural translation.

The Mission of Demythologizing: Rudolf Bultmann's Dialectical Theology, by David W. Congdon

Review "This book is one of the most important and perceptive studies on Rudolf Bultmann and his often misunderstood program of Entmythologisierung (demythologizing) ever written in English." --Michael Lattke, Emeritus, The University of Queensland, Brisbane, Australia"In this substantial work, David Congdon has produced the most creative and scholarly study of Rudolf Bultmann's theology for more than a generation. In refuting the standard charge of a capitulation to modernity, he shows how Bultmann's demythologizing project is rooted in a robust set of convictions about God as subject and the act of faith as existential and practical. This reassessment of Bultmann as a dialectical theologian is long overdue. In an increasingly secular culture which too readily dismisses Christian faith as 'believing six impossible things before breakfast,' Congdon's work promises to rehabilitate Bultmann as an important resource for theological understanding." --David Fergusson, University of Edinburgh"The Mission of Demythologizing systematically deconstructs the slogans with which New Testament scholars have long caricatured Rudolf Bultmann's hermeneutic. Yet this is no mere demolition job, as David Congdon replaces the stereotype with a Bultmann fully invested in a missiological hermeneutic on behalf of dialectical theology. This book and the discussion it generates will be with us a long time." --Beverly Roberts Gaventa, Baylor University

About the Author David W. Congdon earned a PhD in theology at Princeton Theological Seminary and is associate editor at IVP Academic. He is coeditor of Karl Barth in Conversation (2014) and the author of Rudolf Bultmann: A Companion to His Theology (2015).

Travis McMaken In this massive and massively important study, Congdon has overturned the myths about Bultmann and his work that have accumulated over the generations since his death. By introducing us to the real Bultmann - a Bultmann who was obscured even in his own lifetime in no small part because of Karl Barth's failure to understand him - Congdon has also provided a fresh vision of mid-20th century dialectical theology. Consequently, this is a must-read volume for anyone working on 20th century Protestant theology. - Congdon gives us a new Bultmann - This is perhaps the most important thing that Congdon accomplishes. Reception of Bultmann, and especially of demythologizing, has been obscured by polemics from the very start, and this problem is especially pronounced in English-language scholarship. This problem is further compounded by bad translation, as well as overshadowed by Barth’s own misunderstanding of Bultmann. David cuts through all this noise (he does this throughout, but see especially section 8.5 where he addresses the criticisms that Moltmann, Bayer, and Jenson lodged against Bultmann), drawing upon the best German scholarship but also going beyond it, to articulate a compelling account of Bultmann’s thought. And it is an approach that (1) maintains continuity with the dialectical theology movement of the 1920s, and (2) is driven by the engine of mission. That Congdon has given us a new Bultmann is especially important for all those, particularly those of the “Barthian” persuasion, who have heretofore written-off Bultmann. These folks have rejected a bogeyman (bogeywoman? bogeyperson?) that does not exist. The only proper response is to tolle lege! anew. - Congdon gives us a new Barth - Barth scholars will perhaps find this point most surprising, but I’m convinced that it is now impossible to discuss Barth’s development without recourse to Congdon’s work. His excursus on Barth’s development (p. 123ff) is valuable on its own, but his most important contribution is to clarify the impetus for Barth’s turn from the liberalism in which he was trained. The usual story is that an “Appeal” of 93 German intellectuals, including many of Barth’s teachers, in support of World War 1 gave Barth the critical nudge. Congdon, however, identifies another “Appeal” that appeared a month earlier, also signed by Barth’s teachers in support of World War 1, and that proved more critical. This appeal made the case for war on missionary grounds, which repulsed Barth. Consequently: “Dialectical theology, in the sense defined by Barth, was forged in the crucible of a theopolitical dispute between the pseudo-mission of Germany and the genuine mission of God, between the mission of a ‘No-God’ and the mission of Jesus Christ” (p. 258; see all of 3.1, beginning on page 237). - Congdon brings Barth and Bultmann together - I don’t mean to suggest that Congdon argues for the position that Barth and Bultmann are identical, because he does not make that argument. Real differences remain. However, Congdon does show that they are much closer together than even Barth ever recognized. Barth famously likened their relationship to that between a whale and an elephant who can never meet and, if they could, would have nothing to say to one another. Congdon calls this “The Myth of the Whale and the Elephant,” and he sets out to demythologize it and gain a proper picture of where Barth and Bultmann disagree.

By Amazon-Kunde That is not my first book concerning this topic, but it is definitly worth to read, you find a lot of concise information in it. The author shows with every page, that she really knows the problems of the topic and how to avoid all the pitfalls, she shows solutions for the agile manager and how to sell it to the higher management.Short and up to the point, I recommend to read it for every manager, product-owner and scrummaster (and not only for starters).

A pragmatic approach to estimating indeed By Steve Johnson One of the big questions in organizations is “How much will this project cost?” The other question is “When will this project be done?” In fact, the bigger the project, the more the people in the organization want to know. The problem with these questions is that they are predictions. How do you deal with requests to estimate what will be delivered by what date? Johanna Rothman’s excellent book Predicting the Unpredictable gives you answers. The title basically gives it away: how do you predict the unpredictable? Rothman gives clear recommendations on how to make, revise, and communicate estimates using proven techniques. The book is filled with loads of good quotes:* “Since software is about learning, and we rarely, if ever, do the same project twice, we are always estimating the unknown.”* “In many ways, estimating project budgets or dates for agile projects turns out to be irrelevant.”* “Some managers want you to estimate the budget as well as the date. And now, you’re off into la-la land.”Many readers will find the final chapter most rewarding: Troubleshooting. Rothman explains the dangers of the common practices of multi-tasking and team switching, how to use spikes, how to estimate testing time, and the three big estimation traps.A must read for product leaders, product managers, and project managers.

Great summary of current estimation thinking By Hans Samios This is a great book for those that have the feeling that their estimates are wrong, especially in an agile context. The tools here, the approach to thinking and the hidden things that really effect estimate accuracy (eg context switching) are all covered.

The first manned mission to Mars tragically ends when the crew capsule crashes into the Red Planet – a fiery comet that kills all aboard. Except one. A survivor, marooned millions of miles from home, fights to survive the most hostile environment ever encountered. Sinclair Bosco struggles as authorities deny his very existence all in the name of politics and greed. Millions of dollars were made when the mission failed, all thanks to one person disabling a parachute. Sinclair’s survival creates a chaotic whirlwind of activity on Earth. Join him as he fights sandstorms and sabotage to find a way to tell the world what he’s discovered: We are not alone. There’s a conspiracy creeping through the White House seeking to cash in on the disaster and the government relentlessly hunts the few who know the real story – including NASA engineer Andrea Meyer. She discovers what happened and barely escapes Mission Control with her life. She leads FBI and Homeland Security agents on a cross-country race for the truth. Teaming with former NASA scientists and a couple high school kids along the way, she tries desperately to help the astronaut release the biggest news story in mankind’s history. Deep in the Martian caves he discovers the key to humanity’s survival and the secret of man’s existence on Earth. And also in those caves he finds ancestors of the first humans – those who seeded our planet with life millions of years before. Abandoned by the rest of the world, Sinclair seeks the means to send his message to the masses. . And in his search, he may have found his own way home. “A great idea for a story,” featuring “consistently good use of language…enjoy watching the characters unfold.” See what The Martian Dawn brings…

Captain Sinclair Bosco has just survived 9 months on a trip to Mars only to have it end in a crash landing. He is the sole survivor, he wakes up wondering if Mars Heaven would be different than the one on Earth. Meanwhile, there is no news on Earth for his family and others watching the Mars mission. The story evolves with an attempted cover-up by NASA of the events on Mars. Bosco is sending messages and getting no response from NASA. Finally, he is contacted by Andrea Meyer, a NASA employee on the run because she knows there is a survivor on Mars. The story line alternates between Earth and Mars and it's possible there is life on Mars...but I shouldn't give that away. I admit I was more interested in the Mars storyline and would like a sequel or prequel. Give this book a try!

Review "I believe it is written well for an honors-level freshman chemistry course; i.e. it covers all of the basic material but in a way that is more thorough and intelligent than other introductory texts.""Excellent discussion of the basics from a scientific viewpoint and good illustrations of the principles. Excellent figures and example problems. Excellent homework problems.""The traditional coverage of atomic and molecular theory has always been a strong point of Principles of Modern Chemistry. My opinion this is the ONLY text on the market that so methodically demonstrates an underlying connectivity between chemical processes, molecular structure, and energetics.""My opinion this is the ONLY text on the market that so methodically demonstrates an underlying connectivity between chemical processes, molecular structure, and energetics.""The greatest strength in this book is the mathematical rigor. Students learn in many ways and some need the mathematics. Too many of the general chemistry textbooks (even honors) seem to be taking out mathematics as a way to 'make the chemistry more understandable' instead of keeping the mathematics in and then describing the mathematics in an intuitive manner. The authors have worked on integrating the mathematics and the qualitative description. This has greatly improved the understandability of concepts."

About the Author David W. Oxtoby became the ninth president of Pomona College on July 1, 2003. An internationally noted chemist, he previously served as dean of physical sciences at the University of Chicago. At Pomona, he holds a coterminous appointment as president and professor of chemistry. Before coming to Pomona, he was associated with the University of Chicago for nearly three decades, with brief interludes to serve as a visiting professor at such places as the University of Paris; the University of Bristol in Great Britain; and the University of Sydney in Australia. Oxtoby is a fellow of the American Physical Society and a member of the American Chemical Society and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. After earning his bachelor's degree, summa cum laude, from Harvard University, he went on to earn his Ph.D. at the University of California, Berkeley. As a research chemist, he is author or co-author of more than 165 scientific articles on such subjects as light scattering, chemical reaction dynamics and phase transitions. In addition to co-authoring Principles of Modern Chemistry and Chemistry: Science of Change, he has received fellowships from the Guggenheim, von Humboldt, Dreyfus, Sloan, Danforth and National Science foundations.H.P. Gillis conducts experimental research in the physical chemistry of electronic materials, emphasizing phenomena at solid surfaces and interfaces. Dr. Gillis received his B.S. (Chemistry and Physics) at Louisiana State University and his Ph.D. (Chemical Physics) at The University of Chicago. After postdoctoral research at the University of California-Los Angeles and 10 years with the technical staff at Hughes Research Laboratories in Malibu, California, Dr. Gillis joined the faculty of Georgia Institute of Technology. Dr. Gillis moved to University of California-Los Angeles, where he currently serves as Adjunct Professor of Materials Science and Engineering. He has taught courses in general chemistry, physical chemistry, quantum mechanics, surface science, and materials science at UCLA and at Georgia Institute of Technology.Laurie J. Butler received her B.S. at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and her Ph.D. at the University of California, Berkeley. After postdoctoral research at the University of Wisconsin, she joined the faculty at The University of Chicago, where she has been a professor since 1987. Professor Butler's research investigates the fundamental inter- and intramolecular forces that drive the course of chemical reactions. Much of her recent work investigates classes of important chemical reactions where the breakdown of the Born-Oppenheimer approximation (the inability of the electronic wavefunction to readjust rapidly enough during the nuclear dynamics) near the transition state alters the dynamics and markedly reduces the reaction rate. She has been an Alfred P. Sloan Fellow and a Camille and Henry Dreyfus Teacher-Scholar, and was awarded the Llewellyn John and Harriet Manchester Quantrell Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching at The University of Chicago.

An inspiring true story of a canine friendship that led one man from life on the streets to artistic success

For years, John Dolan had been living rough, trying his best to get by. Born and bred on the estates of east London, his early life was marked by neglect and abuse, and his childhood gift for drawing was stamped out by the tough realities outside his front door. As he grew older, he turned to petty crime to support himself and ended up in prison. On coming out, he soon found himself on the streets, surviving day-by-day, living hand-to-mouth. It wasn’t until he met George, a homeless Staffy puppy, that his life changed for the better. To begin with, George was a handful: he had been abused himself and was scared of human contact. Soon, John and George became inseparable. It was then that John decided to pick up his long-forgotten gift for drawing, sitting on the sidewalk for hours at a time, sketching pictures of George that he would sell to passers-by. With his best friend by his side, and a pencil in his hand, John suddenly found his life’s calling. 16 page color insert

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. a gut-wrenching and revealing story of a famous artist's descent into crime and of the saving power of a dog! By Ann An inspiring story of how the love of a dog changed a man's life. John's path into petty crime was the outcome of a very challenging childhood. John was in and out of prison for petty thievery until he became responsible for the welfare of a dog. He then became a fixture in the Shoredich, London High Street as he sat beside George initially begging then selling the drawings of George and of the locality. Now his large works sell for over $8,000 but you can still buy his small George drawings from him online for $80-120. His story is fascinating and gut wrenching. I couldn't put the book down!

Inglee While the story is compelling, the author's style of writing did nothing to make me want to keep turning the pages. I didn't feel pulled into the story or eager to see what happens next. The reader has to bring emotion to the reading for I found it lacking in the narrative.

By Jeffrey Scott Dixon I got the book today and have already colored 4 pages. As expected, the small amount of white against the black background makes every bit of color pop! I thought the pages would color very quickly because there's so little white space, but it actually takes a fair amount of concentration. Coloring the fine white lines worked best with markers (with a scrap paper behind the page I was coloring). It was kind of freeing that it didn't matter how much I overlapped the black because of course it doesn't show :)I think I will have the whole book colored soon, or at least the pages that I don't let my kids color (my 8yo already claimed one!Excellent purchase and something really unique to add to my small coloring book collection :)

This is not a book to use color crayons on as the lines are very small and delicate. I used gel pens and think that fine sharpie markers would be an excellent choice. The black background makes all the colors pop and with the gel pens it appears to be glow in the dark with morning light shining on it. So awesome looking! I will be buying the very reasonably priced book as soon as I get my paycheck. Thanks for your beautiful work Asma.

I let my artistic side take over. I thought highlighters would be perfect to contrast with the black background. It turned out gorgeous. I highly recommend these to relieve stress. I received this product at a discount or free for quality testing and in return I'm offering up to you to read, my 100% opinion and review - whether it be good or bad. My opinions are my own and I was not paid or compensated in any other ways.

Review “As Food Studies courses multiply and growing numbers of students are eager to reflect critically on all things food, this book offers stimulating ideas for topics, readings, and assignments to instructors, both veterans and new to the field. The editors have gathered thoughtful contributions that reach out well beyond anthropology, providing useful pedagogical tools to all those who want to teach about contemporary society with and through food.” —Fabio Parasecoli, The New School“Teaching Food and Culture offers exciting, innovative pedagogical approaches to topics across the spectrum of the anthropology of food. Firmly grounded in the authors’ respective specialisms, collectively these chapters demonstrate the vital importance in the study of food of connecting multiple perspectives, theories and methods. The volume will be an indispensable resource for teachers in the anthropology of food and food studies.” —Jakob Klein, Department of Anthropology and Food Studies Centre, SOAS, University of London, is co-founder of the SOAS master’s programme in the Anthropology of Food.
