Here you will find everything from turning your initial ideas into story generation, from beating writer’s block, to keeping your writing moving forward from story concept to knowing where and how to end your story. The following is a sample. “WRITE THE CLIMAX FIRST It is said that the hardest paragraph to write is the first paragraph of any book. So, don’t start there. Remember rule number three? We don’t have to write a book in the same order we read the book. Write the end first. Then back up and get the characters to the end as quickly as possible. We became writers because we were readers first. Our natural inclination is to write our novel like we read a book, from front to back, beginning to end, start to finish. That just isn’t always the correct or only way. We write in any order that gets us writing and keeps us writing…”

About the Author Alan Black has been writing novels since 1997 when he started Eye on The Prize. His writing tastes are as eclectic as his reading preferences. Alan admits that he loves writing much more than editing and the whole publishing process. Alan was born in central Kansas and grew up in Gladstone, Missouri. He graduating from Oak Park Senior High School and eventually earning a liberal arts degree from Longview Community college. He spent most of his adult life in the Kansas City area. The exception came at the orders from the U.S. Air Force when he was stationed in Texas, California, Maryland, and Japan. He and his wife were married in the late 70s and moved back to Independence, Missouri, but now live in sunny Arizona. His desire to write started in the second grade. He was given an assignment to write a short story about Greek mythology. His teacher took the time to call his parents and express her appreciation of the story. Although neither of his patents remembered the incident, it had an impact on him, eventually leading him to write Eye On The Prize, taking two years to complete. He has gotten faster since then completing a recent manuscript in three weeks. Alan Black is a #1 bestselling author for Metal Boxes, a young adult, science fiction, military, action adventure. He has published ten novels to date. He is an indie multi-genre writer who has never met a good story he didn't want to tell. Alan Black's vision statement: "I want my readers amazed they missed sleep because they could not put down one of my books. I want my readers amazed I made them laugh on one page and cry on the next. I want to give my readers a pleasurable respite from the cares of the world for a few hours. I want to offer stories I would want to read."

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Humorous and instructive book about the craft of writing, specifically directed at the first novel. By Pat M I met Alan through at a book signing for another author here in the Phoenix area. I started to talk to him and decided to read his books "Chewing rocks" and "Metal Boxes", I enjoyed both.A couple months ago I started my second attempt to write a novel. The first I had written, rewritten, and re-rewritten so much that I gave up on the effort. I started attending writing seminars and now half a decade later, I decided to make another attempt with an entirely different novel.Half way through the writing I noticed Alan's book and purchased it. I was amazed at how all the things I had done wrong on my first attempt to write a novel, as well as others that somehow I had missed, were warned against in this book. Many of the suggestions I had learned the hard way or through various seminars. Many are entirely new to me.I have now completed my rough draft and am in my final editing. I have a group of friends, who have agreed to be my beta readers, a direct suggestion from Alan. This is not a book about grammar, this is a book about the craft of writing, written by someone with decades of writing experience. If you are a first time author like myself, you will find this book to be both entertaining and instructive. If you have already written a novel, or never quite finished one and got bogged down somewhere like myself, you will find yourself nodding your head, wishing you had read this before you started.Hopefully by the end of this year I will have more to say, as I intend to follow this through and get a novel published, using many of the suggestions in this book.

A Very Good "How To" book By Nadinez I bought this book thinking that I could finally take my wild fantasies and what if thinking from my mind and put them down on paper. while reading this how to book I started my first novel. I am currently writing it and well on my way to finishing it. This book is fun to read and is written in a casual conversational style that allowed me to feel like I was being personally coached through it. Thanks a lot.

It is full of helpful advice for first time authors. If you are thinking of writing a novel, this is a must read. Alan Black has 'been there done that'. He knows what he is talking about and good for him for being willing to share. I highly recommend it for any author. Thank you Alan Black.
