This is an extensive how-to book for anyone interested in tiling a bathroom, kitchen, outdoor area, or virtually anywhere. This is not a project book, in that it doesn't teach you "how to tile a table" and then "how to tile a shower." Instead, it methodically moves through pretty much everything you need to know about working with every kind of tile in every situation. If you've read any of these Black+Decker books, you know that they include many staged pictures of a guy and a gal doing DIY repair and enhancement jobs around the home. The pictures are a bit cheesy and staged (like, outdoor shots look like they were taken on a set), but the images are also very helpful and instructive. There are also plenty of diagrams, which I find helpful.STRONG PARTS OF THE BOOK:- great overview of different tile-cutting and tile-clipping tools; I've used some of these but not all, so appreciated the depth of coverage about cutting tile- lots of time spent talking about layout; I've gotten myself into a few jams while laying tile because I didn't plan ahead enough; the authors do a good job of teaching you how to avoid this- the book also encourages ambitious tile work, which is nice to see; the tile counter jobs are particularly impressive- the use of wood structures that are then tiled is also pretty cool and the way to go, in my experience with kitchen and bathroom remodel workWEAK PARTS:- the weakest part of this book, I think, is that the images look a little dated (see at least one of my images for evidence of this); I say this because many modern, minimalist homes utilize tile, but the images in this book are more about cluttered-feeling earth tones; if you get this book, I'd suggest also looking at some images of modern tile design just so you don't end up creating a tiled time capsule of the pastOverall, I think anyone can learn a lot from this book. Above all, tiling techniques are emphasized, which will make any job you do look more professional..................This product was not given to me as part of any promotion. This review is entirely the result of my own opinions and use of the product.

Does not answer any of my questions or address any of my particular needs in a tiling job I was about to start.Example #1- I'm using quartz (silestone specifically) backsplash tiles to tile a whole countertop in a laundry room. I wanted to know what type of grout or if grout is even necessary if the tiles are butted up smooth with eachother. Book never goes into detail about choosing grout per your tile choice or by where the tiles are located, etc. It makes mere mention of grout choice by tile size. If I had to use grout with my tiles, I don't know if it should be sanded or not, epoxy or resin based or not, how thick or thin my spacing should be, etc....Example #2- Same job listed above, I needed to know if adhesive tile mat would be an appropriate choice for my job versus old-school messy mortar. The book never once even mentions adhesive tile mat; as though it doesn't even exist!Example #3- Book says for countertops that you have to put down 3/4" outdoor grade plywood, then vapor barrier, then cement board, then fiberglass tape, then finally mortar before laying your tiles on a frickin countertop! Not once did any of the people I've asked (tile installers, home improvement store employees, kitchen and bath store employees, etc) say that I'd have to have so many dang layers. If my tile is laid correctly and with proper caulking around the sink I can't possibly see why anyone would need that many layers for a flipping countertop in a laundry room!Example #4- This book makes almost no mention of choosing the right saw and blade for your needs. My tiles are 7/8" thick quartz! I'm probably going to need something pretty beefy but what?! How do I know what to choose?Example #4- Book never even addresses installing precut backsplash and sidesplash pieces that may have come matching with your precut vanity counter. They say that backsplash pieces are rarely the same length as the tiles themselves and to save yourself the trouble when lining up grout seems just to avoid buying the backsplash pieces in the first place, then go into how to build up the wall/backsplash and cut your counter tiles to lay on the fake backsplash you just created! Seriously, how about work smarter not harder?! That's like 15 extra steps when I could have just been given instructions on how to use real backsplash pieces! The only thing this book had going for it in my situation is that they mentioned you don't have to buy specific "counter" tiles when laying a tile countertop. Just about any tiles will suffice, while some choices are better than others for this application.Needless to say, this book is going back post haste. I thought because it said "Complete Guide" and "4th Edition" that I'd find the answers to my questions in this book but boy was I wrong! The fact that it never even mentions some newer tiling products on the market might be what miffed me the most though!

[[VIDEOID:5b7e20116b775e506cf6472c31a05181]]If you want to install tile on your own this book is for you! My favorite thing about this book is it extensively covers how to remove old flooring and fixtures. This can often be the biggest obstacle in a home improvement project. Often tile needs to be fitted around plumbing which this book covers all sorts of ways to cut and shape different types of tile in different ways. It also features a wide variety of styles and designs for inspiration.
