The Cruise of the Nonsuch Buccaneer is an interesting title for a book written in 1914 by Harry Collingwood. The story is an old fashioned adventure, however, one that takes place in 1569. Though originally intended for young adult audiences, this tale of high-seas adventure is a captivating read for readers of all ages. Here is brief story summary. Young George St. Leger has returned from a sea voyage, only to discover that his brother is in peril and has been captured by the Spaniards, somewhere in the West Indies. Desperate, he begs the owner of a newly built vessel, the Nonsuch Buccaneer, to undertake a risky rescue mission. Will he pull off his daring plan? The story takes place at a time in history when the major European powers are colonizing the Americas. The powers are after the natural resources. In this story Spain is pulling gold and jewels from the South American, Caribbean Basin and defending her homeward bound merchant fleets with a vengeance. The story has many twists and turns and will keep you turning the pages.Harry Collingwood is the pen name for William Joseph Cosens Lancaster (1851-1922). Lancaster was a midshipmen in the British Navy but due to defective eyesight, resigned and spent a long career as a civil engineer specializing in the construction of ports and harbors. As a result he traveled a lot. He was also a prolific writer of nautical and piratical fiction.I would have rated this book a "five star" except for the writers use of what I would call the slang or 1569 "period appropriate" English language spoken at the time. This is the first book I've seen this writer do that. The writer does not do it often but there are several quotes of crewman, spoken in the language of the time that take a little interpretation of the reader to understand. This is not a major stumbling block but indicates the writer was trying to use the exact phrases of that period. The other thing that is predominant in all of Coolinwood's writing is the use of nautical terms describing a sailing vessel. Having read 5 or 6 of his nautical books, I am slowly learning the sailing terms and use the built-in Kindle dictionary feature less and less.I highly recommend this book. I find it interesting the original audience was teens. Books written by this author can be read by all ages. They contain no sex or gore. If you have not read anything by Collingwood yet, you might want to try his "Harry Escombe" book as it is about 98% on land and a good story.

She was ahead of her time. I have never seen nor read a more thorough gardening book. I don't think there is a topic not discussed. I am also surprised at how many garden practices today are actually very old. For example cold frames, raised beds, and window boxes have been around for years. Until reading gardening books from the late 1800's to early 1900's I did not know this. So many books and magazines today tout all these garden ideas like they are the latest and greatest.I find I really enjoy reading the older garden books much more. There is a sincerity and richness to the books of old that is very difficult to find in books written today. And when you consider many plants and herbs have been around for several hundred years its no surprise that gardening techniques have not changed much.I sure wish I would have found more books like this when I first started gardening. Sure would have saved a lot of money! And the wealth of information along with the detail in the older books is really hard to beat. The author of this book writes very fluent and graceful which makes this such and enjoyable read.

She is full of information that might take us a lifetime to come up on our own. She has an elegant way of writing, poetic and informative, her enthusiasm catching. I truly enjoy this book.

Christians around the world recite the "Lord's Prayer" daily, but what exactly are they praying for—and what relationship does it have with Jesus' own context? Jeffrey B. Gibson reviews scholarship that derives the so-called Lord's Prayer from Jewish synagogal prayers and refutes it. The genre of the prayer, he shows, is petitionary, and understanding its intent requires understanding Jesus' purpose in calling disciples as witnesses against "this generation." Jesus did not mean to teach a unique understanding of God; the prayer had its roots in first-century Jewish movements of protest. In context, Gibson shows (pace Schweitzer, Lohmeyer, Davies, Allison, and a host of other scholars) that the prayer had little to do with "calling down" into the present realities of "the age to come." Rather, it was meant to protect disciples from the temptations of their age and, thus, to strengthen their countercultural testimony. Gibson's conclusions offer new insights into the historical Jesus and the movement he sought to establish.

7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Reading the prayer afresh By Loren Rosson III I’ve waited a long time for this book. Its arguments were gestating back in the early days of the Crosstalk mailing list, and according to the preface even years before. Those arguments are now marshaled, and scholars who are attached to traditional views of the “Lord’s Prayer” will need impressive rebuttals. Jeffrey Gibson’s reading is not only better but strangely obvious at points, as if we just needed someone to take a hard look at the people who first prayed it.Which is why he calls it the Disciples’ Prayer. The disciples were those first people (not Jesus, who taught them the prayer), and they operated out of an austere remnant theology that had little to do with what Christians today pray on their knees. The prayer, as Gibson argues, was designed to secure them as the faithful elect, and to keep them from apostasy.**Jesus, not John**But let’s start at the end, with the book’s appendix, since it represents Jesus’ starting point. Gibson asks if there is any merit to the claim that Jesus inherited the prayer from John the Baptist. I’ve long been sympathetic to this view since it avoids “great-man” fallacies, but also because Luke 11:1 shows the disciples asking Jesus to teach them to pray “as John taught his disciples”. The Greek wording could mean the disciples are asking to be taught to pray “just as” or “exactly as” John’s disciples were taught, though not necessarily. Gibson thinks not, and his strongest reason is that some of Jesus’ disciples had been John’s, and thus unlikely to be part of a group-request to be taught a prayer that was already known among them (pp 169-170). I applaud Joan Taylor’s attempt to align Jesus closely with John (against Crossan’s ilk), but on the point of the Disciples’ Prayer I’m afraid Gibson is right. The text doesn’t lend the greatest support for John as its author.**Matthew, not Luke**Q-skeptics will be happy that Matthew’s version of the prayer is given primacy. Gibson never actually brings up Q, relying on arguments that don’t depend on the question of its existence. Jeremias’ confidence in Luke is shown to be empty (pp 15-20), for Luke betrays a heavy editorial hand. The parts he omitted are organic to the prayer, and his version reflects a general effort to divest it of Jewish themes and make it more Gentile-friendly (p 27). Farrer advocates could obviously make Gibson’s case stronger. Not taking a stand on Q might be shrewd tactics, but that’s a two-edged sword, since some Q-believers may charge that Gibson is sidestepping an important part of the debate. Q-skeptics like myself will be convinced in advance. Then comes the deeper question: Does Matthew’s version go back to Jesus? Gibson thinks yes, but arguing anything about the historical Jesus these days is speculative business. He nicely refutes Goulder and Crossan (pp 20-25), but just because their arguments are weak doesn’t make a case for historicity strong. Gibson’s case is that Matthew’s writing style and characteristic vocabulary “might be be a reproduction, albeit in Greek, of the style and vocabulary of Jesus” (p 26) and that the Didache, which mirrors Matthew’s version, is likely independent of Matthew (p 27). The first is conjectural, the second questionable. I’ve no idea if the Disciples’ Prayer goes back to Jesus, but in the absence of a compelling case against it, I can go along with Gibson and assume so to see where it leads. And on this assumption, Matthew’s version is indeed the better candidate.**The Meaning of the Prayer**Gibson’s thesis is on whole compelling, though some of his supportive arguments are either problematic or unnecessary. He basically dismantles the eschatological reading under the influence of George Caird. The prayer, he says, isn’t about praying down blessings from the end-times. I think he’s right about this, though part of his reasoning depends on what I take to be an unwarranted skepticism about literal apocalyptic imagery: “The whole scholarly notion, rampant in New Testament studies since Johannes Weiss’s (re)discovery of apocalyptic, that Jews expected any kind of cosmic catastrophe, let alone an imminent end of the world, as part of the outworking of any divinely grounded hope for Israel, may be a false one, since it may be based in an overly literal reading, and misunderstanding of the nature, of ‘apocalyptic’ texts.” (p 138)I strongly disagree. In a page-by-page decimation of Tom Wright, Edward Adams proved (beyond reasonable doubt) that Jewish apocalyptic pointed to the universe’s literal destruction, followed by either its re-creation or miraculous transformation. Wright’s insistence that cosmic disaster language was a metaphor for purely socio-political events is refuted by a thorough assessment of the literary evidence. Even worse is the way Wright abuses George Caird to support his pseudo-historical view. Caird at least maintained literal elements alongside the metaphorical, though I think Caird could also push the metaphorical envelope a bit far.But that’s an aside. Just because I’m confident that Jesus was a literal apocalyptic doesn’t mean everything he said had to be about the apocalypse. That would be absurd. Some of his parables were apocalyptic, others not at all. He spoke directly about the kingdom, but he also said things that were kingdom-related without focusing on the issue — not least in the Disciples’ Prayer. Gibson makes a strong case that the prayer isn’t “about” the kingdom. It’s about resisting apostasy to make oneself worthy of it.**Paraphrasing the Prayer**Here is Gibson’s paraphrase of the prayer (p 28). Again, this isn’t a plea for God to make his kingdom arrive, but to help the disciples maintain an obedience which the kingdom demands. “Our Father, the one in the heavens, ensure that we hallow your name ensure that your reign comes ensure that your will is done on earth just as it is done in heaven; do indeed give us today our daily bread and forgive us our sins in the same manner in which we have forgiven our enemies and keep us from subjecting you to testing but rescue us from doing evil.”Thus, the “Our Father” segment is a confession of God’s sovereignty and pledge of disciple-loyalty, whatever the cost. “Hallow your name” asks that the disciples not dishonor God through disobedience, even at the cost of their lives (pp 114-120). “Your kingdom/reign come” asks that God shape the faithful remnant of believers and enable them to do his will (pp 109-114). “Forgiveness” has in view the principle of non-retaliation and constraint to love one’s enemies, and is the condition upon which God forgives the disciples (pp 126-132). “Lead us not into testing” asks God to keep the disciples from putting him to the test, not the other way around (pp 135-160). That last needs special attention — Gibson devotes an entire chapter to the “testing” segment — and I’ll return to it shortly. All other prayers which Jesus urged on his disciples (Mt 9:38/Lk 10:2; Mt 24:20; Lk 21:36; Mk 14:38/Mt 26:41/Lk 22:40,46) were aimed to keep them on the right path (see pp 90-96), and so Gibson’s reading of the Disciples’ Prayer naturally follows suit. He also discredits comparisons to the Amidah, Kadish, and the Morning Prayer — the eschatological Jewish prayers from which the Disciples’ Prayer supposedly derives. The datings of these prayers are uncertain (later is more likely), and they were doubtfully prayed in synagogues before the liturgical introductions of the second century (see pp 54-58). First-century synagogues were places of Torah recitation and instruction (per Horsley and Sanders), and any prayers uttered in them were private and spontaneous. Taken together, the evidence reinforces Gibson’s reading of a prayer that aligns more with the stringent demands of remnant theology, and less with the liturgical hopes of later catechisms.**Who Puts Whom to the Test?**The final chapter on the “temptation” petition is the book’s strongest. For starters, the word is a poor translation. The Greek word πειραζειν peirazein, like the Aramaic nisan (which likely stands behind it), wasn’t thought to convey what “temptation” conveys to us today; “testing” is the better translation (p 33). But the real question is who is testing whom? Most assume that the petition means something like “Please God, don’t tempt (or test) us too harshly”, but Gibson argues that the disciples are asking God to keep them from putting him to the test. It’s ironic that the apocalyptic crowd (of which I’m a vocal member) views this part of the prayer as lending strong support to the standard reading. The assumption that devout Christians would be assigned a prayer that begs to be spared temptation, testing, suffering and/or persecution makes nonsense of NT theology. Gibson grinds this point home (see pp 141-146), and cites Moule: “Why should anyone pray to escape testing — even if it is testing by the Devil and constitutes temptation [enticement to evil]? If one knows that testing and temptation are inevitable; if one knows that, before the glorious climax of God’s final triumph, there will be inescapable testing of an exceptionally severe kind; if, moreover, one knows that testing can be salutary and that the Lord himself has pioneered the way through it to spiritual effectiveness — then what is the logic of praying for exemption?”To which Gibson answers in agreement, none at all (p 144). The faithful elect expected to be put through the grind; they wouldn’t pray to be spared the badge of honor. As a brief aside, this is a similar point made by some of the more sane fundamentalists when they refute pre-tribulationist doctrine: the NT is replete with the idea that believers will be persecuted, oppressed, robbed, starved, slaughtered — have their faith put to the test in horrendous ways, especially during the tribulation. (Certainly the “rapture” spoken of by Paul in I Thess 4 was never understood to avoid this, against pre-tribbers). Christians were committed to suffering for their cause. Disciples invited martyrdom as proof of their allegiance. They faltered and got terrified and had doubts like anyone, but the remedy for this wasn’t a petition to get out of jail free. The prayer should read, as Gibson says, “Lead us not into testing you”, which basically says, “Please God, keep us from doubting you and renouncing all that you have deemed fit for us to follow” (p 150) — in particular, the constraints of non-retaliation and loving one’s enemies in the face of lethal hardships (p 159). That’s a difficult thing to do in any time and place, but especially in the honor-shame cultures of the Mediterranean.**Verdict**Gibson’s book is more than an argument. It’s an aesthetic, especially for the way it evokes seminal moments in Israel’s history: the wilderness generation, who hardened their hearts and put God to the test (Exod 17; Num 14; Psalm 95); the bread from heaven they received (Exod 16); Moses’ command to hallow God’s name, do his will, and not put him to the test (Deut 6:10-19). All of this lends more support to the apocalyptic model than Gibson realizes (I don’t think it’s possible to have a “new exodus” without literal end-times, unless your name is Tom Wright), but that’s a small matter when his thesis doesn’t suffer for it. This famous prayer, as he shows, doesn’t pray future blessings down into the now. It wards against evil by keeping people constrained under hard demands — loving enemies; shunning families; rejecting violence; inviting martyrdom. If Jesus believed the world was about to end (as I think he did; Gibson less so), he also insisted on intense commitment and unconditioned loyalty in preparation. He was like any millenial leader, but he crafted a special prayer to reinforce allegiance. For modern Christians, the book almost functions as a dare: To consider what Jesus demands, instead of what God will bring — and how the first disciples feared God’s wrath if they couldn’t meet those demands. Not all religious martyrs are pacifist, and the path of non-violence is a hard one. Violence is in our nature, and a perennial question is whether our savagery is fueled or reined in by religion. Muhammad fueled it. Jesus reined it in, and for him, “to profess God as Father,” says Gibson, “entails taking a stance, and to pledge oneself to demonstrating and proclaiming this certain way of being in the world” (p 164). Biblical scholars are at their best when they force relevant questions in view of original intentions, and that’s exactly what Gibson does in The Disciples’ Prayer.

Weaks Dr. Gibson has done a tremendous amount of intentional work in this monograph, the kind that offers the results of years of research and reflection. As such, it is thorough and frames questions in the right way. Gibson's arguments are clear, and this writing clarity offers a great opportunity to engage with his work, and be convinced or at least challenged by his conclusions. As such, the book provides several points with which those studying the Disciple's (Lord's) Prayer can engage—how historical might the different gospel versions be, what were the prayer's origins, how would Jesus' historical audience have heard the prayer in its context.

JUST GO! Leave the Treadmill for a World of Adventure, by Gabrielle Yetter, Skip Yetter

From the Author We wrote this book after being asked numerous times how we'd moved across the world and how and why we let go of "traditional" lifestyles by taking a leap into the unknownHaving decided we wanted more from lives (after we were inspired during our honeymoon in Thailand in 2007), we moved to Cambodia three years later and, in doing so, discovered magic, adventure and new experiences every day.Our book is not just about moving overseas, starting a new life, change, volunteerism or retirement. It's about discovering new directions and new passions It's about embracing potential and pursuing whatever is important in your life.Just Go! is filled with information about how to make that change. It contains tips and inspiration from a variety of people of all ages and from all walks of life and our one desire is that may inspire at least one person to realize their own potential.

From the Back Cover In 2010, Frank (Skip) and Gabrielle (Gabi) Yetter quit their jobs, sold their home, gave away most of their possessions and bought one-way tickets to Cambodia.   Settling in Phnom Penh, they volunteered with non-governmental organizations, traveled throughout Asia, wrote articles for local publications, made friends with tuk-tuk drivers and royalty, learned to speak Khmer, hiked throughout temples and jungle terrain and discovered how to live without most of the "stuff" they'd had back home.   They changed their lives and it all came about because of their honeymoon in Thailand in 2007 which set in motion a plan to step away from their 9-5 existence.   For Skip, it meant disembarking from a 30 year career in journalism, publishing and business. For Gabi, it meant drawing on her decades of experience in packing up and moving across the world.   The change didn't come overnight. It took three years of researching, planning and organizing before they were able to disentangle themselves. What inspired them? The desire to see more, do more, experience new things and break out of what most people consider "a traditional lifestyle".   Along the way, they met dozens of people like them. Individuals, couples and families who'd decided to opt out of conventional lifestyles and travel to other parts of the world.   Just Go! is about that journey. It's about discovering ways to make a change - whether it's quitting a job, moving across the world or finding a new direction. It's about developing tools, plans and checklists so you can re-chart your life.   Written by two career journalists, Just Go! is both a workbook and a true-life storybook for anyone who may have been considering, procrastinating, researching or thinking about stepping off the treadmill and exploring new horizons.

About the Author Gabi and Skip are former journalists, freelance writers and business professionals. They met while working for an international newswire company in the U.S., fell in love and combined their passions for writing, adventuring and travelling.Gabi is British. She was born in India, raised in South Africa and moved to the U.S. "on vacation" more than 20 years ago. She worked as a journalist on The Star (S. Africa's largest daily) and continued to freelance throughout her life. Skip worked as a journalist in Massachusetts, published a string of small newspapers and raised two children. They moved to Cambodia in 2010 and realised they didn't want to go back. While in Phnom Penh, Gabi wrote two books - The Sweet Tastes of Cambodia (about traditional desserts) and The Definitive Guide to Living in Southeast Asia: Cambodia). Skip consulted with NGOs and international firms based in Cambodia. They are now house-sitting around the world, writing and exploring the planet, step by step and hand in hand.

Not only have Gabi and Skip Yetter done just that, they’re more than happy to share their trials and tribulations as they moved from a typical American two household working professional couple to a pair of self-sufficient globetrotting nomads. And they couldn’t be happier. From sharing the joy of a life of complete freedom to providing practical tips on things such as health insurance, packing and maximizing your resources, Just Go! is your complete resource guide to a new life on the road. And, even if you know darn well that you could never “do that,” Just Go! is worth the read for its travelogue of fascinating people and places that most of us only dream about.

Must Read By Stephen LaBonte "Just Go" is thought provoking and informative .This compilation of anecdotes, interviews, observations and personal enlightenment brings to reality an alternative lifestyle only a few get to experience. If you have ever wondered if you could get off the "treadmill" you must read this book. The authors discuss the issues, fears and concerns one would face in letting go of the security and drudgery of jobs, bills , taxes and ownership of "things". They share the risks and the rewards of "taking the plunge". The wonderful adventures and friendships throughout the world they have been able to experience as a result of proper planning and a little courage. No matter if you are considering selling everything and traveling the world or just retiring a little early this book will help you sort it out..

Goldman Although I know the authors, this book was fascinating and inspirational. It reaffirmed we have the power to live our dreams and not settle for a life that is unfulfilling. It also gave great advice as to how to make a drastic change in your life . In addition it reminded me what is really important in life and what is superficial. Even if you have no plans to change what you do, you can find tools here how leaving your comfort zone can actually put you in an even better zone of life. Lastly, it gives you great insight into many wonderful places in this world and why they will be great places to visit or live in .

Human beings built an incredible world of technology reaching even to the stars. Then they destroyed it and drove themselves to extinction. Now, all that remains of mankind are their ravenous corpses, zombies on the eternal hunt for fresh meat and brains. The humans were long gone, but the animals have survived--and evolved. The cats have ruthlessly ruled over Middle Park for a thousand generations, keeping each species in their allotted place with a bloodied, iron claw. The squirrels man the Kingdom’s great airships and protect the Wall, keeping the eternally hungry zombies at bay. The rats toil in the mines and the fields, supplying Middle Park with precious resources. The dogs are little better than slaves working in spots no animal will go. And the rabbits serve only one purpose. They are food for the cats. The animals of Middle Park are sure they are the only living survivors in a world overrun by the dead. But when the Kingdom comes under attack by a mysterious necromancer known only as the Sleeping Man--a creature who can control undead animals--those illusions of safety are destroyed forever. Four animals--a warrior squirrel who’s lost everything, a slave dog, a rat from the deepest sewers, and a rabbit escaping the butcher’s block--must band together and go where no animal of Middle Park has ventured for a thousand generations. The mystery of the Sleeping Man lies at the heart of the ancient city filled with the walking dead—and should the four fail to solve it, Middle Park will fall.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Cute, comical, violent, patriotic, endearing allegory-- great characters! Epic military adventure & Revolution By Carol Kean Great characters, hilarious scenes, great dialogue, classic themes -- take an epic story of rebellion, brotherhood, soldiers, enemies becoming allies, replace the humans with squirrels, dogs, rats, cats, bunnies and mice, and an old story becomes fresh and new.The pigeons. The gorillas. The pandas. The Great Wall of.... not China, but Central Park, now known as Middle Park. A dictatorship of cats, somewhat like the pigs in "Animal Farm." An underdog, like Fiver in "Watership Down," who rises to the an occasion and becomes a great leader. The rats in this clever allegory remind me of WWII Germany.Ever see a documentary on the Messerschmidt factory? Warbirds built *underground* - those Germans! The dirty rats! - brilliant engineers. So much of this novel is rich in military history and tradition. Fans of Michael Reisig's "The Hawks of Kamalon" should flock to this story. All the makings of a literary classic are here, or would be, but for one thing. The author tends to repeat himself. Too many words, too many details. How many times do we need to read that the cats killed the parents of the two squirrel brothers? And yet, and yet, the story was so engaging, and so cute, I kept reading. I sped past some of the battle scenes (unlike hordes of zombie fans, I cannot bear to see a dog with a sword hacking up zombies). This is so engaging, and it would make the cutest movie ever, but kids may not be able to handle the downside of great military epics: heroes die.Did I mention the zombies? I'll never understand the fascination of the book-buying, movie watching public with zombies. This long, long, long story ended abruptly on a cliff hanger. This is sure to set off all the one- and two-star bandits. So will the typos and other errors on almost every page. A round of editing, trimming, tightening, and pruning would make this a first-rate tale that generations of readers could love. As it is, it's a great story, and I enjoyed reading it. Just check out how many Kindle Highlights I shared (if you can find the page: hello, Amazon! Why is it so hard to find if one is not on the Kindle?).

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Well, We're done here folks. Time to let someone else take over By The Infamous ElJay I picked this one out of a hat. Just one of the many books that thread through my amazon suggestions. It's wonderful. In the current zeitgeist, the zombie apocalypse is always about us. The humans. This time we screwed it all up. We're gone and our furry companions and the rest of the animal kingdom are left to fend for themselves in the broken world we left behind. Oh sure, our zombies are still hanging around (the animals call them "Hungry Men") but we're toast as lord and master of all we surveyed.John Burks gives us a marvelous story about the squirrels, the dogs, the rats and the cats that inherit the world from us. And it seems that some of our less sterling traits have manifested . There is still racism (true racism in this case) and class warfare and pride and privilege. Some uneven editing and some grammar fails along the way but nothing egregious. There is also honor, duty and sacrifice. And a barbarian dog named Bonan. That in itself makes this book worth reading. I can hope that the next book in the series comes soon, because I require this.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Awsome Reading By Kindle Customer I love zombie apocalypse books, but this one is in a class by itself. This is a different take on zombies, and I must admit I LOVE LOVE LOVED it!! This is both fantasy and science fiction at their finest . I couldn't put it down and can't wait for the next!

Boland doesn’t just politely announce his presence to the urban fantasy party… he kicks in the doors and blows the windows out! The House and Hemlock draws you into a magical world that is so carefully woven into a backdrop of Americana, and so beautifully anchored by blue collar characters, that believability is never in question. One gets a sense of Stephen King as the bridge between fantasy and reality builds throughout the pages. And though a relative newcomer, Mr. Boland employs a mature writing style and perfect tempo that keeps the reader engaged and the story moving. He also avoids many of the pitfalls of the genre. Instead of bombarding the audience with back-story complexity or sweeping landscape descriptions, A.P. develops a world through character close-ups and authentic dialogue. The result is a highly enjoyable read and an amazing story. The Kept and the Keeper series is indeed off to a strong start.

I am easily distracted, regularly reading multiple books at once and forgetting to finish, however, this story kept me fully engrossed the entire time anticipating what would happen next. The storyline is easy to follow, yet complex enough that it is stimulating. Boland is an extremely talented author and I cannot wait for the next one!

Fun, quick read that's an interesting take on the genre By John E Really interesting spin on a classic creature (the gnome) and commentary on responsibility (both as an individual to his family and society to our environment). Quick read. Well worth your time even if you don't like fantasy.

By exposing the structure of objects such as glossaries and tables of contents and including code examples, transforming existing XML (including XHTML) to Flare XML becomes very straightforward. I couldn't find this information anywhere else so it was especially gratifying to discover that this book is also very well written.

The Earth is suffocating under toxic skies and there’s only one way for those left behind to escape – the space elevator that sits atop the massive structure known as the Reach. Knile Oberend has returned from exile and faced the demons of his past. Having climbed to the top of the Reach, he now faces his toughest challenge – finding a way to save those he left behind. For years Talia Anders lived alone and in poverty. Now as she makes her way toward the Reach to rescue an old friend, a mysterious man shadows her movements and threatens to destroy her dreams of escape. Meanwhile, disgraced cop Alec Duran has reached rock bottom. Alienated by his own colleagues, he finds himself at the mercy of a group of vigilantes who may turn out to be his only chance at salvation. And, in the habitat far above the Reach, a discovery is made that will impact all of their futures in ways they could never anticipate. Landfall (Book 2 of the Reach) chronicles the continuing saga of the last days of Earth and the characters whose lives become intertwined as they try to escape.

Landfall presents a whole new set of challenges for Knile and the other major characters, and touches every base with exciting action, great characters, and quality world-building.Knile Oberand survived his ascent of the Reach but opted to let Ursie leave Earth in his place. On his descent he must save Roman, who was captured in a human trafficking ring. On the surface, Talia receives the surprising news of Knile's decision and tries to reach him only to run into problems of her own. The disgraced lawman Alec Duran is left in complete despair after watching Knile escape a second time. A mysterious group of vigilantes save his life and try to give him new purpose. Finally, we get a glimpse off world on Habitat One where Ursie awaits an uncertain future. There is no shortage of action in Landfall. All the main characters face unique challenges trying to survive the slow dying Earth and the corrupt regime that controls the Reach and everything above it. There is little regard for human life, especially when you belong to the lower classes. Most live on with little hope for the future.Knile pledges to get Talia and Roman off Earth somehow after realizing he doesn't want to be alone anymore. Talia reaches the same realization after seeing Knile reenter her life in the first book. The strong character development is a great aspect of the series and separates it from many other sci-fi action novels. The world-building is straightforward, consistent, and plausible. Earth is dying and the only way off world is through the Reach. Unfortunately it is tightly controlled by the Consortium who isn't interested in saving the poor remaining people on Earth.Knile and Talia are great characters but at times seem to possess otherworldly clarity. In my experience people who grow up in such rough and impoverished conditions are rarely so stable. In times of stress, both are very articulate and focused. Roman, a teenager with a very rough upbringing, also seemed to mature rapidly. However, there are only two or three instances and they didn't really take me out of the story. Other readers may not notice or care. The story of Alec Duran and Ursie do not intersect with the other plot lines, and instead run parallel. Duran is trying to find a reason to live after his nemesis escaped and his career is ruined. Ursie is trying to escape Earth only to find space presents its own unique problems for her.Unfortunately Duran is not as strong of a character as Knile or Talia. Ursie is a neat character but her story in Landfall isn't particularly compelling. The real meat of this one is the Knile/Talia story line.A number of series do parallel storytelling with numerous POV characters, e.g. Game of Thrones. The drawback is the reader may feel like they are reading two or three novels simultaneously. Some may prefer to get fully immersed in one story and find it challenging to do it in several at a time. Healy does an excellent job keeping all the parallel story lines interesting but it is uneven in terms of strength. I believe Alec and Ursie will have major roles to play in the third novel.Landfall takes place in a post-apocalyptic dying world but it is more about personal journeys. Knile is a thief but his personal code of ethics is honorable. He is a reluctant hero in the mold of Logan/Wolverine or Han Solo. It is when he meets similar people of character that he sheds his cynicism and commits to something other than himself. The same goes for Talia, who realizes Knile and Roman were more than just criminal associates. Unlike her other contacts, they meant something to her. She becomes a hero in her own right.I would say the main point of the book is "people matter more than comfort or treasure." The importance of love, friendship, and resilience are at the center of the series and give it surprising dramatic dimension that many sci-fi novels lack.I highly recommend Landfall, and the series as a whole.

Cinematic Sci-Fi Thriller By MICHAEL KERSHAW This is the second in The Reach series of books and follows immediately on from its predecessor Earthbound. I said in my review of Earthbound that I hoped some of the less featured characters in that book would be featured more in this one and thats exactly what has happened. Whereas Earthbound focussed almost solely on the main character Knile and his interaction with others Landfall is almost equally split into 4 story streams. This works really well and It makes for a page turning and exciting novel. I've written before that Mark's books could easily be adapted into movies and this one is no different. Well defined characters in a story that never runs out of breath is an achievement indeed, especially in Sci-Fi and the writing is excellent.I am very much looking forward to the next part of this series (I think from Mark's comments at the end of the book there will be 4in total) and recommend these books to anyone looking for well written thriller/Sci-Fi entertainment

By J or G Hanson Landfall is the excellent 2nd book in Mark Healy's "The Reach" series. Landfall is a stand-alone book, but you might consider reading Earthbound first for the best Reach experience. Before I begin a synopsis of Landfall and tell you the myriad reasons you should read it, I want to congratulate Mark on delivering such a powerful sophomore effort in this series. Earthbound was a great introduction to an amazing world, but he hit it out of the park with Landfall. Mark honed his craft between the two books. The creation of his world, pacing, characters, dialogue and story have somehow improved even from the first installment. It's so exciting to see this development in an author whose work I already enjoyed-thanks for the hard work, Mark!In Landfall our main hero, Knile Oberend, realizes that there is more to life than selfish pursuits. He seeks to reunite with the family he almost left behind. Ursie, one of the protagonists from the first book, escapes Earth only to find new challenges. I enjoyed Ursie's character development and look forward to seeing how Mark brings all his characters together in books three and four of the series.Vivid character development is a consistent theme in Landfall. Aron Lazarus is a compelling character introduced later in the book. Lazarus is a fallen former member of the Crimson Shield-an elite group of soldiers who maintain order for the Consortium. The Consortium is the mysterious ruling class who determine what people can do on a dying Earth and who gets to go off-planet. Lazarus is a fighting machine , but also a deeply principled and religious man. Inspector Duran is our main protagonist once again. But his world changes in Landfall also. He seems to be trying on a hero coat when he joins the rebel Skybreach faction. But at the end of Landfall, I was left not knowing whose side Duran was on.Landfall is a book I found difficult to put down. There are multiple plot threads that are set down after a chapter and picked up later, but this writing style worked for me in Landfall. I became invested in all the characters and found myself guessing how their lives would intersect. I can't wait until Mark serves up Skybreach, the third installment of his excellent "The Reach" series.Mark provided me with an ARC copy in exchange for a review. Thanks, Mark!

Tort reform is a favorite cause for many business leaders and right-leaning politicians, who contend that out-of-control lawsuits throttle growth and inflate costs, particularly in healthcare. Less is said about how such reforms might affect the ability of individuals to recover damages for injuries suffered through another party's negligence. On that count, Texas—where efforts at tort reform have been energetic and successful—provides an opportunity to appraise the outcome for plaintiffs and their lawyers, an opportunity that Stephen Daniels and Joanne Martin take full advantage of in this timely and provocative work. Because much of the action on tort reform takes place on the state level, a look at the experience of Texas, a large and important state with a very active plaintiff's bar, is especially instructive. Plaintiffs' lawyers work on a contingency fee basis, collecting compensation for themselves as a percentage only if they win. Reduce lawyers' ability to use contingency fees as compensation, as tort reform inevitably does, and you reduce their economic incentive to do this work. Daniels' and Martin’s study bears this out. Drawing on over 20 years of research, extensive surveys and interviews, the authors explore the impact the tort reform movement in Texas has had on the ability of plaintiffs to obtain judgments--in short on private citizens' meaningful access to the full power of the law. In the course of their analysis, the authors explain the history and economics behind the workings of the plaintiffs’ bar. They explore how lawyers select cases and clients, as well as the referral process that moves cases among lawyers and allows for specialization. They also examine the effects of medical malpractice reforms on plaintiffs' lawyers—reforms that often close the courthouse doors to certain types of people—tort reform's "hidden victims." Plaintiffs' lawyers are the civil justice system's gatekeepers, providing meaningful access to the rights the law provides. Daniels’s and Martin’s thorough and fair-minded work offers a unique and sobering perspective on how tort reform can curtail this access—and thus, the legal rights of American citizens.

Tort Reform, Plaintiffs' Lawyers, and Access to Justice, by Stephen Daniels, Joanne Martin

Review "The authors, researchers associated with the American Bar Foundation, surveyed and interviewed numerous Texas attorneys. They also use data collected by the state bar. They conclude that tort “reform” has indeed harmed Texas lawyers—and consequently plaintiffs—and argue that all are harmed when legal rights are denied."—Choice"This book enriches conversations about consequences of changes in civil justice policies and ramifications of efforts to ‘reform’ tort litigation; adds to scholarship on trial lawyers as agents who must stay in business to serve civil justice in the United States; and illuminates issues surrounding lawyers’ fees. From the workaday realities of trial lawyers to the chronic complexities of making policy through lawsuits, the authors inform readers and make them more sophisticated thinkers."—William Haltom, co-author of Distorting the Law: Politics, Media, and the Litigation Crisis"In this masterful book, Daniels and Martin demonstrate how a sustained attack on the plaintiffs’ bar can deprive ordinary people of access to justice when they are injured by the negligence of others."Herbert Kritzer, co-author of The Oxford Handbook of Empirical Legal Research"Daniels and Martin give us a penetrating and alarming account of the most energetic and successful campaign to dismantle the legal protections that Americans gained over the course of the past century."—Marc Galanter, co-author of Tournament of Lawyers: The Transformation of the Big Law Firm

About the Author Stephen Daniels is a research professor for the American Bar Foundation. Joanne Martin is Director of Administrative Services at the American Bar Endowment.

This book should be on the bookshelf of every plaintiffs' lawyer By Willie Chapman This book is the culmination of over twenty years of academic research on the evolution of tort law in Texas and how tort "reform" has affected the plaintiffs' practice and access to justice in tort cases in Texas. Stephen Daniels and Joanne Martin capture the actual impact of the decades long attack by corporate and insurance interests on the civil justice system - and they tell the story in a very readable and interesting manner. As Communications Director of the Texas Trial Lawyers Association I was an informational resource for their research. From that perspective I gained the utmost respect for their work. The book should be a must-read for plaintiffs' lawyers not only in Texas, but across the nation.
