Tess of the d'Urbervilles: A Pure Woman Faithfully Presented is a novel by Thomas Hardy. It initially appeared in a censored and serialised version, published by the British illustrated newspaper The Graphic in 1891 and in book form in 1892. Though now considered a major nineteenth-century English novel and possibly Hardy's masterpiece, Tess of the d'Urbervilles received mixed reviews when it first appeared, in part because it challenged the sexual morals of late Victorian England.

Many of his books, not least “Tess,” shocked readers. Many of his protagonists are tragic figures, violating society’s preferences whether sexual, moral, or political; no comfortable bedtime reading here. Fortunately the condemnation some of Hardy’s novels evoked helped sales, and he continued to produce his enthralling and haunting works. This edition of “Tess” is well formatted and enhanced by the original illustrations. Truly a book to savor.

Tess and Thomas Hardy By Bookchild It is one of the classics but very readable, and I do admit that I liked it although it is dark, sad and depressing. It will not cheer you up, but it is a novel that should not be overlooked, How different he made the lives of his heroines, it is almost as if he liked the high-spirited woman, and provided her with better life experiences (Far from the Madding Crowd) better than the meek and humble Tess.

Every bit as wonderful today as it ever was By Alice in Wondland Tess Durbeyfield is a young, rural Englishwoman with no pretensions to wealth or power. However, when her beauty brings her to the attention of rich and important Alex d'Urberville, he lays his plans to use her for his own pleasures. But now, as a "ruined woman," any normal future for Tess is hopelessly compromised. So now, Tess must find a future for herself in an England that views her as an object of scorn...if she can.Written in 1891, this Thomas Hardy book has enthralled generations of readers. Yes, it's not a modern story, with modern sensibilities and mores appearing. Worse, it was written at a time of melodrama and the lengthy and ponderous writing style. But, for all that, the true power of the book always grabs the reader, as you follow Tess's attempts to find happiness in a world that sees her wearing a scarlet letter. This book is every bit as wonderful today as it ever was. I loved watching poor Tess, and felt as if I also died a bit at the ending.(Review of Tess of the d'Urbervilles by Thomas Hardy)
