By darkguardian2 I wanted to read this book ever since seeing the infomercial of Scott doing his thing on tv. I couldn't afford or justify the expense to buy the big commerical package so this book had to do. The methods are easy to follow and Mr. Flansburg does a good job expressing his mind set in how he mentally did the problems. The basic addition and multiplications methods are good but the examples were insufficient when dealing with mixed numbers of different lengths. There were also exceptions to many of the rules that weren't expressed. Finally, the last part of the book with special rules were so numerious it would take a year to effectively learn and apply them all from memory. This leads me to believe that Mr. Flansburg didn't tell everything he knows, like the quick way to determine change -- by changing say ten bucks to 9.99 and subtracting that from the amount owed; then add one cent to get the correct change. It's easier to subtract 9 since its the highest value you can have in each column. This was presented by him on a night time radio show he was a guest on. I do give him prasie for getting people young and old to stop depending on calculators and learn mental speed math.

26 of 29 people found the following review helpful. a good place to start learing mental math By DONOVAN wayward dix This book does not give a system of how to use the the various short cuts.It does not say when and where each short cut is most useful.Thereby,trying to remember all or any of them leads to confusion.However,i found the chapters on "using zeroes to hold places", addition,subtraction,and "cross multiplication" to be superb!If you are a concerned parent,student ,or adult ; i recommend SPEED MATHEMATICS SIMPLIFIED by edward stoddard as the most comprehensive manual of shortcut math available anywhere! Learn the simple truths about the japanese and german approach to basic arithmetic . Then on the opposite side of the coin(READING) i recommend :HOW TO READ A BOOK ,by mortimer adler /charles van doren.

This book is terrible By John Springer Anyone who has seriously attempted to use Scott Flansburg math strategies will find out that his methods simply do not work outside of the examples in his book. The problem solving techniques are engineered to work only with the examples that he supplied. For instance, in his chapter on solving cubed roots, his method will work for the exercises in the book, however when I applied these to real world numbers, his methods flat out failed. Hey Scott, try solving the cubed root of these numbers 11111111 or even 123456 using the method described on page 153 - your methods are flawed.

Initially I didn't think my daughter (2.5 yrs) would like it as much as it doesn't have the repeating catchy text as that one did. But she does - if anything I think she likes it a little bit more.

Their actions and emotions are not vivid enough to see character at all. They see someone die and they're kind of like," well, he's gone. Let move on." The humans and their "mortal enemies" the Seneecians become friends in just minutes. Somehow they're suddenly ok with each other. And it's hard to know how much they were supposed to hate each other without any background story to why they were at war to begin with. They're all kind of stuck on a planet and they all seem to accept it. Nobody talks about home, or family, or loved ones. None of the characters have a realistic reaction to loss. It's only been one day stuck on a desolate planet and already the girl is attached to the Seneecians hip but she never thinks or seems to mention a home life. A passed lover, or anything realistic. I tried reading on to somehow find some kind of personality in anyone of the characters, but halfway through the book, I have up. Ugh forget it. I really wanted to like the novel because the plot was great! It had a good world description but no depth. It could've been great!

Enjoyable Read By Kindle Customer Stranded on an unknown and somewhat hostile planet brings bitter enemies together in survival but not everyone agrees. Hostility and bias run deep. Can they overcome their years of programming? The planet is mysterious filled with mazes, dangerous plants, creepy crawlies and secret agendas. Two find Solis with each other but being from different sides can be deadly from their own. Great read and interesting characters that keep readers glued to surviving along side them.

"Embrace your differences" must be her motto. And she can craft some pretty steamy embraces. Actually, there is just one truly fan-worthy scene in this 148-page novella, just to be clear that the sexy times don't overwhelm the exhilarating adventure. The attraction evolves pretty quickly between former mortal enemies Kelen and Kyber, but the action is almost non-stop.There is an exciting space battle, a harrowing trip through a wormhole, a crash-landing on a desolate planet, a difficult journey, and scary monsters. The adrenalin rush hardly ceases. Too often romantic sci-fi authors take it easy on their heroes and heroines who crash land, plopping them down in the middle of a lush jungle filled with water and easy access to food. Mooney took a different tactic by having her soldiers slam into a desolate place where they are compelled to explore in order to find basic shelter and sustenance. Mooney does an outstanding job describing the planet's terrain and the places the Terran/Seneecian contingent survey and encamp. She expends real effort bringing these places to life in a rich and unique way.Kelen and Kyber are likable and level-headed. Little is revealed as backstory; there is an immediacy about the situation that doesn't really lend to reflection and small talk, so Mooney doesn't indulge in it. Surrounding the H/h are a host of secondary characters, who add intrigue, conflict, humanity and intellect to the plot.This is billed as Rim of the World Book 1, so clearly the author is planning to continue the adventure. However, it does not end on a frustrating cliffhanger, but rather a closed story arc.

Word Detectives Volume 2 is the second of three workbooks that make Latin roots accessible to elementary students through stories, movements, and pictures. Many programs start with prefixes and suffixes. In contrast, Word Detectives begins with the "meatiest" part of the word. Prefixes and suffixes modify words, but the roots are the essence. These roots can form a foundation for vocabulary and spelling. Each root is introduced using a simple story. This story is then associated with a body movement that reminds students of the meaning of the root. Finally, the root is associated with a picture that reminds the student of the story, the movement, and the meaning. There are 4 roots per lesson. The lessons are designed to be short and simple. Intensive worksheets combined with a scripted instructor's guide teach students to identify familiar roots when they encounter them in words. First students study a list of words with a common root using fine discrimination to differentiate between similar words, and then students learn to infer the meaning of unfamiliar words using gross discrimination based on the clues provided by the roots, prefixes, and suffixes. This book is meant to be a tool. If introduced early (between third and fifth grade), Latin roots can be highlighted in spelling, reading, and vocabulary, but it is never too late. The story-movement-image combination impacts multiple learning styles and makes high level skills attainable for younger students. Let's become "word detectives." Word Detectives Worksheets Volume 2 is an optional companion workbook. It eliminates the need to make copies and keeps student work organized. Instructors may prefer to purchase one Word Detectives Volume 2 Workbook which includes the stories, movements, pictures, worksheets, and scripted instruction guide. 5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Not the Worst Book of the Year, but getting there. And definitely not in the LitRPG subgenre By Dave Ugg. Certainly not the worst book of the year, but definitely not one I would call good, or even average. Based on the title, and the advertising, and the description, you think this book is part of the subgenre known as LitRPG. It's not. It's two separate stories, one taking place in an MMO, and one taking place in a high school with teenagers, and the two stories are only very tangentially related, in that they have the same main characters. But the things that happen in the real world have no effect on the MMO world, and vice versa. For example, the main female protagonist has had a very difficult emotional event recently happen to her (death of her parents, and her twin sister). This gets brought up in the real world by a bully, and predictably (and rightfully so), the female protagonist has an emotional breakdown. Next time she logs in to the game (which is that same night), she is perfectly fine. Uh, no. Plenty of other things to show that the two plots are only barely tangentially related.Another hallmark of LitRPG is the stats of the characters and monsters/foes are referred to, and often shown, along with levels gained, etc... None of that is here. None whatsoever.Also, there are many character plotlines and thread that are just tossed out the window, left unresolved, etc... So much so that you would think that this was the start of a trilogy, but there is nothing to indicate that, other than the unresolved plotlines, and they appear to be unresolved not intentionally, but because the author just kind of forgot about them.Finally, even if this were actually LitRPG, with the various trademarks and such, the two stories (real world HS and MMO world) are just plain.......boring. Predictable, with very little (almost none) character development, one dimensional characters, and for lack of a better word, boring. The majority of fanfiction is better than this, and if you have ever read any fanfic, you would know how bad I am saying this story is. Like I said, not the worst in the world, but pretty bad.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. underwhelming By Bryan Lightweight mix of teen romance and litrpg. Characters are 2-dimensional cutouts that lack any kind of depth. The RPG aspects also lack depth and cohesion. I think that this author shows promise but does not take world building and character development very seriously. If you want the outline version of teen romance and rpg, then this book might be more to your liking. If you are looking for serious LitRPG, you may want to look elsewhere.

It had a hopeful mood with some darkness in the background.However there was one thing that completely destroyed any sense of realism for me. And that was that when we see the characters in the game, they don't acknowledge that it is a game. Which means that they break down in tears when one of their friend's character dies... What? Why? It's a game.

Pleasantly surprised, but needs an editor By Heather Tremko - Author of The DIY Spa Retreat I picked up this book during the free promotion, and honestly, I didn't want to like it. I think I've read everything Alison has written, and the obvious lack of editing in all of her books has gotten really tiresome to me. But I keep reading Alison because she has a unique voice - no, a unique soul. There are other copycat writers, but with Alison you really get the feeling that she is genuine. I expected The Art of HomeMaking to be old and tired, but it is not. Broken out into 30 days of thoughtful "homework" for the homemaker, it feels do-able and fresh even to those of us who have read approximately a zillion books on the subject.

Most of our class would try reading the chapters but then just look up the cases online or elsewhere to make sense of them. There is a lot of unnecessary banter in this book and it seems to never get to the point. I would read entire paragraphs that could have easily been reduced to a few sentences.

Highest Recommendation By A Real Greek Speaks Greek village life has been disappearing rapidly over the past 30 years as the actual villagers have died off. But this study was made over 100 years ago, when villages were thriving with thousands of people, and the direct connections between their religious and cultural practices and their ancient ancestors as shown in this book make it an incredibly important and truly invaluable historical document.

By suzanne ruthven Bought as research material but what a refreshing change to find a 'forgotten' text that really gets to grips with the subject. This is certainly an 'everything you ever wanted to know about modern Greek folklore and ancient Greek myths but didn't know where to look' book! Starting out by flicking from subject to subject and then got so engrossed that it was gone midnight when I finally closed down for the night. Modern readers might be put off by Lawson's purple Victorian prose but personally I think that this merely adds to the mystique of ancient Greece. Highly recommended

By Amazon Customer I can't just say that my house was filled with clutter but reminders of cherished moments and memories that I didn't want to lose. The stuff was neither comforting nor relaxing but so overwhelming. After reading the book I tried to get rid of them one after the other. In the beginning I was skeptical about throwing them away but after starting to do so, so many ideas started sprouting in my head about redecorating or starting DIY projects or trying to keep myself busy with things that interests me. I found the strength to do it from the authors comforting style of writing. I hope my active participation in my latest actives help lose some weight as well. I appreciate it.
