Fiction. Robert's two protagonists flawlessly portray the immutable bonds of friendship, relationships that survive decades, and the collapse of families and societies. Robert captures the silent helplessness felt by children under their parents and by citizens—especially the elderly—under their governments. Whether in modern suburbia or near-future dystopia, Robert perfectly renders what it is to be human.

Reader 1 Tracy Robert’s skillfully crafted paired novellas, published together as Flashcards and The Curse of Ambrosia, should have six stars, were they available on this rating. Robert’s two primary characters are revealed in a shared friendship that endures across years from childhood to old age. Told in the distinct voice of two women, the stories tell of lives that move from not-so-idyllic days in California in the nineteen fifties to a sadly believable period in the twenty-first century. Her figurative language is so beautifully drawn that pages abound with “favorite lines” now highlighted to savor again at length. I wouldn’t dare reveal the conclusion of their shared journey, but I will say the reader will likely find dismay at the circumstances and hope in the triumph of human spirit. I await more from this masterful writer.

By alitodd The book consists of two wonderful novellas that explore a friendship from different times -and angles - in the characters' lives. The author's use of language, lyrical and poetic, makes this a book you'll want to read over and over again. I'd dog ear pages so I could go back and reread passages that were particularly beautiful and I wanted to read aloud. However, I stopped marking the pages halfway through the book because I realized that the whole book would be marked off. Instead, I went back and read the book a second time. Robert's depiction of life in Southern California is so rich and descriptive, and her story telling so masterful, the scenes played out in my mind like a Hollywood movie, and I was up on that screen as a part of that world. Bravo to Tracy Roberts for writing a powerful and evocative read.

These novellas deserve wide recognition By David Studhalter Evocative, poignant, vivid writing that reflects a keen sense of what growing up human on the Earth is like. These novellas deserve wide recognition. Unqualified recommendation. Full disclosure: I knew the author as a kid, and the setting of one of these long stories felt like almost like my own life. But the writing is so good that's almost immaterial.
