RESISTANCE IS ALLFor years, writers and filmmakers have speculated about the possibility of the Earth being invaded by aliens from another planet. But what if the aliens have been watching us, infiltrating us via human collaborators, or even surgically altering themselves to look human?Occupied Earth is a groundbreaking anthology that explores the idea of what the world would look like years after its conquest. 20 years after a successful invasion by the Makh-Ra, humanity still exists, only it has become subservient to a race of occupiers who govern the devastated planet. But, as much at things continue with some sense of normalcy, something has happened in the Mahk-Ra’s empire. Earth, once considered a strategic beachhead of major importance to the Empire, has been downgraded in its value. Things are starting to degrade. Our planet is the last place any self-respecting Mahk-Ra officer wants to be assigned. Yet, despite everything, life continues. These stories bring us face to face with annihilation — and show how we can pull ourselves back from the brink. Featuring Rachel Howzell Hall, Lisa Morton, Matthew V. Clemens, Howard Hendrix, Nathan Walpow and more, OCCUPIED EARTH is coming. Stay safe. Stay strong. Survive at all costs.

Review Praise for OCCUPIED EARTH“Alien occupation has never been so dark and sexy. Occupied Earth is The Fifth Wave meets Robopocalypse, in the best way possible.”—Michelle Gagnon, author of the PERSEFONE series"Plenty of applicable social commentary. We get to read tales of heroes and martyrs, as well as traitors and collaborators, although the lines are often blurred. A fantastic collection of short stories that deliver in a cohesive narrative. Highly recommended."—SF Reader"The narrative universe feels cohesive and genuine, making it easy to invest yourself in the champions and villains alike. Occupied Earth is collaborative sci-fi done right."—Manhattan Book Review"Clearly, these writers know what they're doing. The stories range from brutal and R-rated to straight-up sci-fi action. One neat thing about the book as a complete entity is the presence of hope. It's not dystopia and misery. The oppressed plan to rebel. The good guys aim to fight. That's good stuff."—RevolutionSF"A unique and impressive anthology that deserves to be brought to the attention of science fiction fans everywhere...a terrifically entertaining read with deftly crafted short stories that will linger in the mind and memory long after this outstanding anthology is finished and set back upon the shelf. Very highly recommended."—Midwest Book Review"Fans of “alien invasion” sci-fi, near-future dystopia, post-apoc (though this isn’t strictly that), and good old classic science-fiction will find much to engage in this diverse yet unified collection of quality sci-fi stories."—The Blood-Shed

Each story is a slice of life and what it's like living under alien occupation By Frank Errington Every now and again I like to step away from the horror genre and read something different. I saw this one and thought it might be a nice change of pace. It was exceptional. Occupied Earth: Stories of Aliens, Resistance and Survival at all Costs is a shared world anthology where the earth has been conquered by an alien race and is now under their rule. Each story is a slice of life and what it's like living under the authority of the Mahk-Ra.There weren't a lot of familiar names in this anthology, at least they weren't familiar to me, they may be to you, and they certainly are to the writers themselves. Each writer manages to tell a solid story of life in the aftermath of an alien invasion, and at the same time keep the overall mythos of the new Earth consistent throughout. Kudos to editors Richard Brewer and Gary Phillips who, no doubt, played a big part in pulling that off.Hunter X – Parts 1-3 by Richard Brewer and Gary PhillipsRichard and Gary are the editors of the anthology. Richard is a native Californian, has always been a lover of stories and storytelling. He has worked as a writer, actor, bookseller, story editor, book reviewer, movie and television Development Executive, and audiobook narrator. Gary has family roots in Texas and the Mississippi Delta, he's a native of L.A. and was editor of the bestselling Orange County Noir. His graphic novel about a money launderer, The Rinse, has been optioned for television. The Hunter X story is split into three parts. It starts and ends the anthology and there's another piece about midway through the book. In this story FBI Special Agent, Paul Hunter, and his partner, JoHannas-ra, make up the first Mahk-Ra-human investigative team. "...a shining symbol of interspecies cooperation. Harmony among the species and all that." Told with a touch of humor, this story sets the stage fort the rest of the anthology.Do No Harm by Rachel Howzell Hall and David W. HallRachel Howzell Hall is the author of the critically-acclaimed mystery series featuring LAPD Homicide Detective Elouise Norton. David Hall is the Design Director for the digital arm of the Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN). This is his first story collaboration with his wife writer Rachel Howzell Hall.Years after the Mahk-Ra occupation two EMTs just doing their job stumble upon a scene which will change their lives again. Just because the Mahk-Ras can do whatever they like doesn't make it right.Pike Street Pick-Up by Adam L. KorenmanAdam Korenman has been dabbling in writing for most of his life, but only recently began spilling the crazy thoughts down on paper. Adam is also a Captain with the Army National Guard, serving with a company of tankers in California.Pike Street Pick-Up is a fine story of a street urchin and pickpocket who lifts more than he bargains for from a Mahk-Ra official.Union Day by Lisa MortonLisa is a six-time winner of the Bram Stoker Award®, a recipient of the Black Quill Award, and winner of the 2012 Grand Prize from the Halloween Book Festival. She also knows more about Halloween than just about anyone in the world.Union Day is a Halloween story, of sorts, set in this shared world of alien domination. How the Game is Played by Rob HartRob Hart has been a political reporter, the communications director for a politician, and a commissioner for the City of New York. His debut novel, New Yorked, was published by Polis Books in June 2015.How the Game is Played shows how even with the occupation it's politics as usual.Strange Alliance by Cliff AllenCliff is a lifelong fan of the space program, and that has led to an avid interest in science fiction as a literary form.Strange Alliance features clever storytelling and good writing. It's about a merciless human who rises high in the ranks of the Mahk-Ra.Hope by Matthew V. ClemensMatthew V. Clemens is a long-time co-conspirator with Max Allan Collins, the pair have collaborated on over twenty novels – including CSI and Criminal Minds TV tie-in books.Hope is another well-told story of occupation and resistance and how one should never jump to conclusions.Location, Location, Location by Howard V. HendrixHoward Hendrix is the award-winning author of six novels, as well as numerous non-fiction books and short stories.A prime example of how life goes on after the occupation. The story of an ex-astronaut turned real estate agent working to make a sale of a movie making property to the Mahk-Re.Letting Go the Ghosts by Marsheila Rockwell and Jeffrey J. MariotteMarsheila (Marcy) Rockwell and Jeffrey J. Mariotte have written more than 60 novels between them. They’ve also written dozens of short stories, separately and together. For the Occupied Earth anthology they've written a powerful story of the Taovayan native Anerican tribe continuing to make their way under Mahk-Ra occupation. Now comes an offer for the mineral rights to their land that the Taovayan cannot refuse, but not everyone believes they should sell.A Day in the Life by R. M. JohnsonRichard M. Johnson is a screenwriter, copywriter, playwright, and poet. His short stories can be found in several anthologies. He is also a performer and photographer and uses both avocations as excuses to occasionally get out of the house and into the sun.Another solid story. He is President of Mystery Writers of America SoCal chapter, a member of the board of Sisters in Crime LA, and an active member of the Writers Guild of America and International Thriller Writers. This was my personal favorite story in the anthology. Quite an original tale. I would love to see this given a longer treatment someday. The Devil You Know by Jessica KayeJessica Kaye is a partner at Kaye & Mills (www.kayemills.com), a law firm specializing in publishing and entertainment. She is an audiobook producer of hundreds of audiobooks, more than a few of which have been nominated for Grammy Awards.Another well told story of Mahk-Ra and humans working together, with a nice twist.Johnny and the Warehouse Women by Nathan WalpowNathan Walpow is a prolific writer, a past president of the Southern California chapter of Mystery Writers of America, and a five-time Jeopardy! champion.A simple warehouse robbery uncovers a prostitution ring involving Mahk-Re women. From there, things get a bit complicated.Traitor by Adam Lance GarciaAdam Lance Garcia was raised on comic books, movie serials, and lightsabers. In addition Adam has also worked as a full-time television producer and a part-time screenwriter.A brilliant story of revenge.Occupied Earth: Stories of Aliens, Resistance and Survival at all Costs is out now from Polis Books and is available in paperback, e-book, MP3, and Audible formats.Recommended.

Of course, this isn't a new concept. But new concepts are overrated. This one has worked since or before "War of the Worlds," and clearly, these writers know what they're doing. That's obvious from the intro, which references occupied-Earth stories I'd never heard of (I bought a couple already.)Sidebar: That's the beauty of an anthology. You find new writers to acquire and consume. End sidebar.None of the stories provide info-dumps about the setting. They just start the characters up in the world and reveal it through dialogue. That's excellent. The stories range from brutal and R-rated to straight-up sci-fi action. My favorite is Lisa Morton's "Union Day," which says that the alien occupiers don't allow Halloween. I gasped. There, I said it. That's how the story starts. One neat thing about the book as a complete entity is the presence of hope. It's not dystopia and misery. The oppressed plan to rebel. The good guys aim to fight. That's good stuff. ( reviewed by Joe Crowe, RevolutionSF.com, http://www.twitter.com/RevolutionSF)

Even though I dislike short stories and hate science fiction, especially post-apocalyptic settings, I found myself unable to put the book down. Kudos to all contributors.

Viking Patterns for Knitting is the result of years of research by Swedish knitwear designer Elsebeth Lavold, who explored patterns of ornamentation found on Viking artifacts, such as swords, buckles, combs, and rune stones. Now, by means of clever knitting innovation (which makes it possible to start a knitted knot in the middle of a sweater), she has adapted these richly intricate knots and braids into gorgeous, fully modern garment designs. The 14 Knitting projects include a hooded sweater with interlaced half-hitches; a cardigan with delicate figure-eight knots; an elegant tunic with serpentine ropework; and father-and-son pullovers inspired by rune stones. Sixty motifs are clearly presented in pictures, text, and charts, including the entire runic alphabet and a striking collections of Viking artifacts. Viking Patterns for Knitting is an adventure in Nordic forms with roots a thousand years deep.

Viking Patterns for Knitting: Inspiration and Projects for Today's Knitter, by Elsebeth Lavold

From Library Journal Lavold is a Swedish knitwear designer who combines her interest in archaeology of the Viking period with her delight in patterned, structured knitting to produce the 14 projects in this book, including jackets, cardigans, pullovers, caps, socks, and mittens. More than simply a pattern book, this work provides valuable insight into the mind and methods of a master designer as she analyzes Viking artifacts and adapts their essence to knitting. For each pattern, photographs and charts of knitted motifs are shown adjacent to line drawings and photos of the Viking designs that inspired them. This is a "high-end" knitting-pattern book of classic garments that will appeal to experienced knitters looking for projects at once challenging and fascinating. Highly recommended for large public libraries and academic textile collections. Copyright 2000 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Review “The patterns in this book use an old technique in an entirely new way. … If you enjoy the twists and turns of knitted cables, you are about to be inspired.”—Examiner.com

About the Author Elsebeth Lavold has devoted her life to knitwear design and to exploring just about every imaginable aspect of knitting. Very early in her career she was drawn to cable knitting, “Because,” she claims, “I am lazy.” With now over thirty-one books on knitting patterns and techniques to her name, her self-proclaimed “laziness” may be a bit exaggerated!Lavold’s career really took off when she developed a technique that enabled her, as well as other knitters worldwide, to knit the intricate interlace patterns of the Vikings. Her third book, Viking Patterns for Knitting, was an instant success and published in six languages. This in turn led to her being asked to create her own yarn line, Elsebeth Lavold Designer’s Choice for Knitting Fever, Inc. More than twenty yarns have been launched with Lavold’s name on them, and she has to date created twenty-six books with design support for her yarn line.Lavold works closely with Anders Rydell, who describes himself as “Elsebeth’s photographer, graphic designer, general helper and, when workload allows, husband.”

But it is not a book for every knitter, and certainly not for the new or casual knitter. For one thing, much of the book is taken up with archaeological discussion -- interesting, but those who buy the book just for the patterns may not feel they're getting their money's worth. Second, you really have to learn new skills to use it. I am a very experienced knitter, and can use both charts and traditionally-written directions, but it took me a while to grasp this new system (I wrote the code for the charts onto the page of each chart I used, and that helped). And, third, the sweaters themselves are not adaptable, simple, sized for everyone, or even necessarily suited for daily wear. All are very special, unusual designs -- the ball gowns of the sweater world -- and friends will say "Oh, you're wearing your Viking sweater!" every time you do.That said, let me also say that I submerged myself in Viking knitting for months after buying this book. The stitch patterns are like Aran cables, but they do not go from the top to the bottom in the usual way. Lavold has figured out how to get cables to twine all over the place -- even into medallion-ish closed shapes. I practiced the techniques and designs on slippers and hats and other small projects before attempting a sweater, and found them very usable for alll kinds of projects. If you knit enough to adapt patterns, you will find that the Viking designs will add interest to many other projects and patterns. And if you are a medium-sized person with dramatic tastes, you will love the sweaters, too. There are more than 14 projects altogether, including a cushion and afghan, one child's sweater, some coats, unisex and women's sweaters, and a number of smaller things like hats, socks, and mittens. All are beautiful and unusual.

Awesome designs, sketchy directions By A Customer Viking Patterns for Knitting is a beautiful, inspiring book that should engage both hand-knitters and other artisans interested in Viking design work. The sweaters Lavold has designed are, for the most part, glorious -- attractive and challenging even for an accomplished knitter -- and she shares the artifacts that inspired her designs. She also gives charts for variations on the different cabling patterns to lead the reader to design her own sweaters or to amend Lavold's.Unfortunately, the book often gives away the fact that it's the first translation from Lavold's native Swedish. The text could definitely have used a more detail-oriented editor both for the descriptions or the projects and the background on the Viking designs as well as for the directions for the sweaters -- in my first perusal, I found one mistake in a pattern. If you're interested in knitting cabled works of art, this book will appeal to you immediately -- I can't wait to get started on several of the sweaters -- but be prepared to spend some time deciphering the directions. The pattern directions are terse and often require a lot of interpretation by the knitter, which may mean that this book is intended for someone with advanced skills. That said, the ambitious new knitter shouldn't be turned off, as long as she's game for some trial and error as she figures out how to make all of the cable charts work together.I heartily recommend this impressive book.

64 of 66 people found the following review helpful. Inspiration for the designer By Sara Benson In "Viking Patterns for Knitting", author Elsebeth Lavold presents 54 unique cable patterns she created based on extensive research into Viking ornamentation. While the Viking were not knitters, the patterns the Vikings created in metal bear a strong resemblance to Aran patterns and other cabling patterns. Lavold has chosen patterns that could be adapted for knitting, and has devised several techniques to enable smooth transitions between cabled and non-cabled areas. Many of the Viking patterns are incorporated into 14 sweaters, primarily for women. Directions are presented in standard knitting notation, with charts for all patterns. Photos of all sweaters are in color. Examples of Viking artifacts and cable patterns are in black and white. The strength of this book is in the cable patterns themselves, providing a foundation for the designer to create unique textural pieces. The information on the cable patterns is interspersed with the sweater directions, without clear indications of where the directions end and the history and patterns start. A good index of the patterns and a solid table of contents help minimize the confusion.

Brodnicki In the interest of full disclosure, I'm the person who designed the layout for this book. But in all honesty this book helped me a LOT. In the process of setting all of the type for the articles and patterns I actually read the text. I mean, I had knit lacy things before this, but usually with heavier yarn and never anything more complicated than a simple lace pattern for a scarf. After working on this book I was brave enough to pick up needles and knit a lace scarf with lacy edging on each side; then I worked two triangular shawls, each having a lace edging, an inner border, and a center. I'm on a roll! The patterns are mainly smaller version of larger shawls -- enough to get a person familiar with the structure and techniques from a simple triangle to the more complex Shetland squares. (No, I haven't been brave enough to move beyond triangles, but I'm getting there!) There is one pattern for a full-sized shawl toward the end, and there are instructions in the back for enlarging most of these without making your head spin. I won't comment on the design and layout -- obviously I am biased on those aspects of the book -- but I love the content! I think this is an excellent teaching tool, and I recommend it highly.

But the city life just didn’t allow me to do it anymore and this has always been a pain. I was then intrigued when I saw this book and thought I might take a peek inside. What happened next caused me to be very excited for what I am going to be doing for the foreseeable future, gardening. The writer introduces a dynamic gardening technique that I just love from the words that describe it. There are so many benefits and features to this form of gardening and there are so many that suit my lifestyle, I love it.

But for other people who aren't so lucky who are stuck with frozen veggies as the cheapest option, this book provides great alternatives. Once you eat fresh food, you will never go back! Great tips in this book and I recommend it for anyone thinking about starting a garden to save money and also better their health.
