I found a few typos but nothing to interfere with the stories. It was a good book to read to pass the time. I liked it for that

Quiltmakers in the mid-nineteenth century made quilts for many of the reasons we make quilts today: to celebrate a wedding, a new child, or a special event for a loved one. They also made quilts to represent and support the events, struggles, and ideals of their lifetimes, especially in turbulent times -- and no time in our history was more turbulent than the Civil War. Members of the American Quilt Study Group accepted the challenge to study a quilt from the Civil War era,1850 to 1865, and create a modern quilt of their own that in some way reflects or reproduces the original. How would the modern quilter interpret a quilt from 150 years ago? This book showcases the fifty study quilts created for the Civil War challenge, along with images of the antique quilts that gave each quilter their inspiration. AQSG invites you to enjoy and reflect on the finished products, and follow each quiltmaker’s journey from inspiration to creation, through the thoughts and reflections they have shared about the history, process, and significance of quilting from 1850 to today.

The quilts showcased were beautiful. I was disappointed that the civil war original quilts were displayed in such a small photo..was hoping to see the original civil war quilt in a full size photo along with the reproduction.

7 of 8 people found the following review helpful. some were very basic and none were as good as the antique ones By Virginia Pascall Disappointing. I was hoping it would have large pictures of antique quilts but instead it had very large pictures of today's people carrying out an interpretation of the antique quilts. Some were reasonable, some were very basic and none were as good as the antique ones. The microscopic pictures of the antique quilts make this book hardly worth buying if that is what you want. It's a pity because I wanted to support the Quilt Study Group but I think they missed the mark with this one.

He told me that I need to study wines and I am thankful that I found this book because everything we need to know about wine was well explained here. This book broadens my mind about wine and it helped me know the history of it. I learned here how I can choose the perfect wines and how to differentiate them. This book taught me what I need to look on wine labels. I also learned here about aroma and balance. Good job!

By Frankie Wine makes me happy, and I never once thought about what makes it good until I stumbled across this book. The detailed breakdown of grapes used, regions and proper aging has become a cool parlor trick when I want to surprise my friends with my wine knowledge, such as stay away from California wines if you don't particular care for the oakier tasting wines and sweet wines should be ages less than two years to maintain maximum sweetness. This guide has also made me better at reading the wine labels so even on my cheaper bottles I know the higher quality wines for my price point. Unlike some other guides, this book doesn't try to convince you of what wines are "good" or which ones you should like. It instead chooses to informs you on what your favorite wine type ( Riesling for myself ) is made from, the region, grapes and aging of it. From there it simply suggest ways to get the most wuality from your wine without overthinking it. Not all the information here is mandatory to enjoy the wines you love. I would flip to my favorite types, find what to look for then take that information with me when grocery shopping. I've picked better wines that is normally pass over with the information I found here! I'm happy for my new favorites and I'm sure if you read this book you'll find some new favorites too!

I am a complete newbie to wine and this book explains it very well. From explaining the different types of grapes to explaining what to look for on the label of the bottles. I recommend this book to all wine newbies.

Inspired by the pioneering naturalist Gilbert White, who viewed natural history as the common study of cultural and natural communities, Mark Laird unearths forgotten historical data to reveal the complex visual cultures of early modern gardening. Ranging from climate studies to the study of a butterfly’s life cycle, this original and fascinating book examines the scientific quest for order in nature as an offshoot of ordering the garden and field. Laird follows a broad series of chronological events—from the Little Ice Age winter of 1683 to the drought summer of the volcanic 1783—to probe the nature of gardening and husbandry, the role of amateurs in scientific disciplines, and the contribution of women as gardener-naturalists. Illustrated by a stunning wealth of visual and literary materials—paintings, engravings, poetry, essays, and letters, as well as prosaic household accounts and nursery bills—Laird fundamentally transforms our understanding of the English landscape garden as a powerful cultural expression.

A Natural History of English Gardening: 1650–1800 (The Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art), by Mark Laird

Review “With humor, wit and compassion, Mark Laird presents human-biological life in and around the garden: the charm of natural creatures, the heartbreak of weather, the thrill of the bloom. His manuscript is a monumental achievement in its command of historical data. He has unleashed archival material from diverse sources never brought to bear on the complex world of eighteenth-century gardens and landscapes.”—Therese O’Malley, associate dean, Center for Advanced Study in the Visual Arts, National Gallery of Art (Therese O'Malley 2014-09-18)Winner of the 2013 David R. Coffin Publication Grant, given by the Foundation for Landscape Studies. (2013 David R. Coffin Publication Grant Foundation for Landscape Studies 2013-01-25)‘Not only is it visually gorgeous – a rich cabinet of curiosities with watercolours of magnolias in voluptuous flower, intricate engravings of butterflies, the imperious head of an American flamingo – but is also meticulously illustrates Mark Laird’s scholarship… His text is as grandly miscellaneous as nature itself and he lightens erudition with wit.’—Kate Kellaway, the Observer.  (Kate Kellaway The Observer 2015-06-07)“Filled with stunning visuals, from watercolors of wildflowers to the narcissus and thistles stitched on a satin petticoat worn to the Prince of Wales’s ball in 1741.”—Mieke Ten Have, Vogue (Mieke Ten Have Vogue)‘Mark Laird, the great landscape historian, gives a superb narrative about the plants, events, people and studies that form the backdrop of English gardening, from John Evelyn to Gilbert White. Exquisite contemporary illustrations support his prose.’—Jane Owen, Financial Times.  (Jane Owens Financial Times 2015-06-27)“Gorgeous . . . the absorbing illustrations support an unexpectedly engrossing text. Laird divertingly explores the dramatic lives of the great and often pioneering gardeners of the day . . . Filled with inspiration. . . . [and] the kind of information that will blossom in your mind as you deadhead or weed, linking your own speck of the planet to the long ago and the far away.”—Mitchell Owens, Architectural Digest (Mitchell Owens Architectural Digest)“Sumptuous . . . highly accessible . . . Much more than a natural history, this book is a magnificent horticultural opus.”—Eryn Carlson, Boston Globe (Eryn Carlson Boston Globe)‘Laird’s mammoth book is magnificent in its own terms, written with wry elegance and a warm heart, its scholarship never overwhelming the telling detail.’—Richard Mabey, New Statesman.  (Richard Mabey New Stateman 2015-07-31)‘Mark Laird’s sumptuous book, beautifully illustrated and produced… is a trove of scholarship, packed with new research’—Jenny Uglow, TLS.  (Jenny Uglow TLS 2015-07-31)“[A] magnum opus . . . carefully crafted and well-researched, replete with extensive full color illustrations, plans, paintings, journal entries, correspondence, and notations . . . I bought two copies, one for myself and one as a gift for a colleague who is a horticulturist. She also was delighted, and revealed that she had always wanted to be a botanical artist, and this book has perhaps given her an incentive to fulfill that ambition, perhaps going back to school to do so. She had taken courses and excelled in them at Harvard's Arnold Arboretum. She is a brilliant young Irish woman who took her degree at Dublin University and knew and admired Mark Laird's writings. So that was a hit.I was also pleased to find mention of my ancestor, Maria Sibylla Merian, the seventeenteentheighteenth-century

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Lupin versus The Tiger By Karen Amrhein Arsene Lupin (as Don Luis Perenna) is out to solve a series of murders -- and prevent another -- in "The Teeth of the Tiger". This seems to be the conclusion of Lupin's adventures, and it's a clever tale, if a bit dark -- darker than is my preference for Lupin stories, but well-told, nonetheless. If you enjoy Lupin tales, or Raffles, or Sherlock Holmes, or The Saint, I wager you'll enjoy "The Teeth of the Tiger".

Marjorie Merriweather Post was one of America's most powerful women, a director of General Foods, Inc., philanthropist, patriot, and internationalist, with a keen interest in art, and a magnificent wardrobe collected over seventy years. Ingenue to Icon is a beautifully illustrated new volume dedicated to Post's love of fashion and how she used it to create her unique style: the luxurious, embroidered dresses; exquisite shoes dyed to match her gowns; and fabulous jewels that defined her style offer glimpses into a life of exceptional elegance and wealth.

Post worked closely with fashion designers across Europe and the United States to create her distinctly elegant appearance over the course of her adult life. More than just a catalog of her wonderful evening gowns, Ingenue to Icon illustrates a spectacular collection of costume, combining numerous images of accessories—shoes, hats, handbags, fans and parasols, and related portraits and photographs of Post wearing them—with a wealth of printed ephemera and personal letters, to put them in context. Four chronological chapters chart the progression of Post's development into an icon of elegance during a century of huge change in fashion.

This book will appeal to all those interested in fashion and style of the twentieth century.

Crisp photography with lots of detail shots and good color reproduction. Readable and informative text giving information on some lesser known (at least to me) fashion houses as well as well known firms like Callot Soeurs and an even distribution of attention across the years make this book a keeper. Reminds me of Style and Splendor: The Wardrobe of Queen Maud of Norway, which is a very great compliment.
