This anthology collects the twelve winners of the 2013 Best American Newspaper Narrative Writing Contest, run by the Mayborn Literary Nonfiction Conference. The event is hosted by the Frank W. Mayborn Graduate Institute of Journalism at the University of North Texas. The contest honors exemplary narrative work and encourages narrative nonfiction storytelling at newspapers across the United States. About the Author GEORGE GETSCHOW teaches in the University of North Texas’s Mayborn School of Journalism and is the writer-in-residence for the Mayborn Literary Nonfiction Conference. He was a reporter at the Wall Street Journal bureau in Chicago and also chief of the Dallas and Houston bureaus. Getschow was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize.

Twelve Outstanding Stories By eric If you think that the craft of writing had died in American journalism, The Best of American Newspaper Narratives, Vol. 2, gives you 12 reasons why it just isn't so. The 12 stories, penned by writers for papers ranging from The Washington Post and The Boston Globe to the Philadelphia Inquirer and the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel Online, prove that great feature writing still exists.George Getschow, a former Wall Street Journal bureau chief and also a Pulitzer jurist, has written in the introduction to the book that, "no matter how many robots show up in the newsroom, it still takes an actual human being to tell a story that intrigues, delights, surprises, haunts and touches at the deepest core of our being." In my opinion, that's what these 12 stories do. One of them describes the last voyage of The Bounty, the tall ship that ran into the teeth of hurricane Sandy and sank, taking several of the crew to their deaths. Another puts us in the seat of a Mercedes with two of the Boston bombers, as we experience the ordeal of the young man whose car had been hijacked by the two extremists. A third story describes how a mother struggles with the schizophrenia of her son.These are not ordinary news stories because they are written using the tools of fiction: dialogue, description, scene setting, and such. The form is called narrative nonfiction. Getschow reminds us that this kind of journalism is not new: It goes back at least as far as the muckraking newspapers of the 1890s, when many editors pushed narrative writing onto their front pages.The stories in Volume 2 are all prize winners--selected from hundreds of narrative nonfiction stories submitted by nearly every major American newspaper to the Mayborn Literary Nonfiction Conference in Dallas. As such, they are not only examples of great writing, but a reminder that in this age of instant fact-distribution, storytelling is as necessary as ever.

Stellar collection of literary nonfiction By harpermi This anthology gathers together a dozen long form narrative nonfiction articles that first appeared in prestigious newspapers such as The Washington Post, The Los Angeles Times, The Boston Globe, and The Wall Street Journal. While reading through the selections, I sensed the writers’ passion for their subjects and their skill as storytellers. In each narrative, the writers revealed in-depth research, their commitment to showing multifaceted characters, and they developed stories filled with tension while staying true to their own voices. The subjects vary from chasing down the Boston Bombers, to teaching medical students respect for cadavers, to the heartache of parenting adult mentally ill sons. While the top three winning narratives display remarkable sensitivity and literary skills, my favorite selection was the “Last Voyage of the Bounty” by Michael Kruse featured in the Tampa Bay Times. Kruse captures the spirit of the captain and sailors who steered a replica of the historic Bounty into Hurricane Sandy. His story is the classic narrative of man battling the sea and the perils of weather as those forces destroy a tall ship and two lives. Although readers know the outcome of both the ship and the crew, the writer’s passion for the story drops readers into the flooded lower decks of the ship, and the minds of the sailors as they zip up their survival suits and tumble into the sea. In addition, Getschow’s introduction to the book reveals the magnificent history of nonfiction storytelling and prepares the reader to spy the richness of past writers within contemporary talent.
