Review The 13 quilts start with a ready-made precut packs but add extra fabric to make different colour arrangements. Each quilt has alternative fabrics to make a unique color selection. Most of the quilts have traditional repeated blocks but occasional quilts use asymmetrical layouts to create a bold design. Some blocks are made larger than necessary and then cut to size. It is advised to spray starch bias edges before cutting to prevent stretching. The instructions and diagrams are easy to follow. There are ideas for enlarging the quilts with extra borders. A gallery shows the quilts with different colour combinations. (British Patchwork and Quilting, December 2015)"Smash Your Precut Stash!" (C&T Publishing), by longtime quilters Kate Carlson Colleran and Elizabeth Veit Balderrama, shares 13 quilts that give purpose to quilters' collections of precut squares and fabric strips. My mother used to tell me that if I was not up to the task, then my lonely toys would get up and play with each other while I slept. Freaked me right OUT. Now I am a (slightly) older kid with far too much fabric. (And a sleep disorder, but that is another book review ...) I desperately wish that all those yards and yards would unfold themselves, intermingle in pleasing color combinations, and produce hands-free completed quilt tops for my next awakening.Right.In the meantime, there is Smash Your Pre-Cut Stash by Kate Carlson Colleran and Elizabeth Veit Balderrama. Their 13 projects are also ideal for scrap collections. No fancy tools are needed, but a large right-angle triangle ruler may be helpful. The tips and suggestions are not all that abundant or ground-breaking: add more borders, substitute non-match-y for match-y. But the projects are worthy of cutting into your precious "don't touch that!" hoard. The smallest project is "My Favorite Fat Quarter Runner" at 15"x45". It is the only runner, and would look particularly nice with a small-scale Asian floral. The largest is "Big Wayne" at 104"x104". Its easy construction adds borders to the smaller (and manly-hued) "Wayne's Quilt". There is a nice blend of contemporary and traditional designs, with lots of opportunities for unique color combinations. The quilting lines stand out on only a few quilts; the piecing is too busy to feature the quilting on most of them.To my eye, there are 2 standout quilts. "Picturesque" (67"x89") is a garden of 48 flower blocks. They are grouped and sashed in a way that brings to mind Delft tiles. The clever flower block looks like a tulip, then a maple leaf, and morphs into something like a poinsettia in the Gallery section. Consistent use of color keeps this busy quilt from getting too jumpy. "Mediterranean Mosaic" (64"x64") is a serene oasis of watery blues and seagrass greens. The Le Moyne Star center does not use any set-in seams. It has strong linear features that make it seem to radiate, like a seashell dropped into a tidal pool. The quilting is exquisite, but is so finely detailed that is can only be appreciated with the close-up inset shot. What sets this book apart from all the others is the authors' sensitivity to the plight of the overwhelmed quilter. They "get" it, and they do not judge, chastise, or nag. They understand that you loved that day-glo zig-zag print when you saw it, but now it makes you tremble and shield your eyes. There is a brief section on color theory that will help you mix it in with other fabrics for best effect. The final section is a 6-page gallery showing 11 projects in different colorways. ("Galleries" are essentially porn for quilters). What's missing are topics like using up scads of pre-cuts in a pieced backing and speedy techniques such as fast flying geese blocks. Or creating lots and lots of half-square triangle blocks from just 2 pieces of fabric placed right sides together. But no matter, this is a fun book with a great attitude. The irony is you might want a bigger stash of scraps and pre-cuts. REALLY big .

By PAULA C SCHAUER This is the best book I've ever found that offers designs specifically made to use up your precut stash, but also includes details about using yardage you have on hand. Most of the designs can be completed quickly, but look like you spent a great deal of time on them. It's a MUST for your quilt book collection. I'm in the process of finishing my fave, Down the Garden Path, a simple design with braids I've made using a batik jelly roll. Next will be Dance Party, another wonderful pattern. Don't let this one get away. (I'm including a photo of the braids hanging on my design board. I love batiks!)

Wonderful quilts for both experienced and novice quilters By Sue Allen Clayton I am a big fan of pre-cuts and this book provides lovely options for using your stash -- whether your a novice or experienced quilter. Several of the quilts (such as "Dance Party") would be easy for a novice quilter. My favorite quilt, "Picturesque," looks like mosaic tiles and would be more suited to an experienced quilter. The quilts also range from modern to traditional, and there's even a masculine design (called "Wayne's Quilt). This book was clearly well thought-out and provides many creative options for using your precut stash.

Full text, original illustrations though in black and white and additional essays for adults By Lady Fancifull This is not a review of the well loved children's classic, more a review of this particular digital version. As I'm engaged in a particular project, I was keen to see the original illustrations by W.W. Denslow, rather than an updated modernised take on illustrations. Hence my choice of this version. However, what this version lacks is the fact that Denslow's illustrations came in colour, something quite novel at the time (1900) in a children's book.If you want a digital version with the original illustrations for children to look at, whilst you read to them, I would suggest this The Wonderful Wizard of Oz (Illustrated by William Wallace Denslow)What THIS one has is a wealth of additional background material on the book, analytical literary criticism theories, plus details of stage and screen versions and various links for accessing audible files, and information about other children's book. I would have loved all the essays and information geared towards adults, and the gorgeous colour illustrations too

The third book in the bestselling Mars Journey series was just released… So catch up and experience this suspenseful thriller for yourself: “This story is more than a story, it's an experience! I really felt as though I were there travelling around the world, recruiting the astronauts, and learning more and more about the Mars Journey program. My heart was literally pounding in the later scenes (I don't want to give anything away), and I can't wait for the next one!” -Allen After the suspicious death of his wife, Brent Carlson, a brilliant but disgraced former astronaut, is called upon to lead a dangerous international mission to Mars, before a powerful mega corporation gets there first and claims the Red Planet for itself. Mars Journey: Call to Action is the first novella in bestselling author Bill Hargenrader's epic science fiction action and adventure thriller series set in the near future. The Mars Journey series delves into the science, technology, drive, and determination of the human spirit to come together to overcome our greatest challenges, explore space, and become the first martians to colonize the Red Planet. “Short enough with so much action that I could not quit reading until I finished rather late at night!” -Hank “Finally got a chance to read your book! I LOVE it. We need more books like this and series of stories like this would be just awesome. My son recently read it too and he loved it too. He is into all things Space and he told me there should be more books like this!! “ A. Elliott *** Atlas Force Dossier: Person of Interest Bio: Brent Carlson As an astrophysicist child prodigy with an IQ regularly tested over 180, Brent Carlson at 13 years old, instead of naming constellations like other kids his age, was discovering galaxies. At 18, in part to rebel from what he considered the “pointless pondering” of scientific institutions and the “bottleneck of the hierarchical academia elite,” he dropped off that path and joined the US Army where he became one of their top combatives fighter. After 8 years of meritorious if a bit reckless service, he applied to join the NASA Astronaut Corps. His application essay stated he didn’t want to waste away just sitting on the sidelines and watch history unfold at a snail’s pace. Instead, he was going to accelerate the creation of history. He was accepted, and quickly rose to the head of his class. Though his scores and performance on missions to space were exemplary, his psychological assessors were concerned for his growing disdain towards those in charge of the current pace of space exploration. He was dangerously close to a dismissal from the Astronaut Corps… That is until he met the future Mrs. Shayla Carlson who helped him see the world in a new light. Their joint effort on the Unified Mars Path project, and their iconic Human Race to Mars speech given at the UN served as a galvanizing moment for the growing Mars Now movement. Unfortunately, with Shayla’s recent suspicious death at the hands of REDACTED REDACTED REDACTED, Brent has gone over the edge. His sanity has been questioned, and his hatred for those in power has been publicly stated… Despite that, we still desperately need him. We need to leverage his high profile as one of the most recognized astronauts on the planet, and we need to utilize his singularly unique skills to ensure the Mars Journey mission success. To that end we are sending our best to bring him in. We anticipate he won't come willingly.

By HKZL My daughter read the preview copy before I had a chance to do so – she gave it a clear 5/5, and is eager to read more. She told it was easy to read (even for someone who has German as basis language, so English is already a foreign one), had ‘drive’, and so captured her to the last page - and she read it without interruption until finished.Having finished myself now, I agree with her, completely – full house of points.

8 of 10 people found the following review helpful. Three stars By Jessy Halen This was one of the most thrilling and clever apocalyptic books I’ve ever read. The characters really stand out, the story is fast and believable, the action in overdrive and the ending is definitely not predictable, but there’s one huge, glaring error that keeps me from giving this five stars: The author left the Florida reconstruction storyline on a cliffhanger. I get that it’s a subplot and all attention is on the main story, but it’s still disappointing. I won’t add any spoilers, but the grand finale battle between all these different factions is really hyped up and then just left hanging for the next book in the series. What gets me is that the cliffhanger was completely unnecessary. It was a great story and I would have bought the next book any way. I probably still will, just to find out how it ends, but please, no more teasing!

4 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Not an EMP story, but still pretty good By L. Well-written survival story with believable characters and witty dialogue, but the description is misleading. This isn’t an EMP book. The EMP knocks out power and a few other things at the get go, but it’s basically just a mild inconvenience for the rest of the book. I don’t even think it’s mentioned again after the first chapter. There was also a scene where ammunition “cooks off” in a fire and shoots up their car. Seriously? That just can’t happen in real life. Rounds may explode, okay, but a box of burning ammo isn’t going to fire off in every direction like a Wile E Coyote cartoon.Other than that, the rest of the book seemed well researched. Definitely worth the read and I even learned a few things.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. I'm not sure this has been done before By Bill Reese Recently I was given a free review copy of "For Us The Living: Judgement Day" by R.A. Peters. While there has been a move to do less and less book reviews, I still like a good story and definitely a good book. The main problem I have is, like most movies, there is nothing new under the sun. You know, the world ends, people struggle to get home or back to their families, and for the most part survive. Most books and movies end with them thriving and not just surviving.Maybe that is just a fact that sells books and movies. This is not necessarily a bad thing, it is just a thing. A series, even though it follows the same premise, leaves you with enough to get you hooked for the next one. Well, that is just great because that is EXACTLY what happened to me with "For Us The Living: Judgement Day".I had been looking for a decent book, not series, that features a more military format simply because I like them. I do not mind the mother/father/sister/brother getting back to their home, but I wanted a little more tactical development in a book. R.A. Peters did not disappoint."Judgement Day" started off with an apocalyptic scenario and two main story lines. The first is of SFC Danielle Walker, part of the U.S. Army SOCOM (Special Operations Command) on a rescue mission in Yemen when an EMP (Electro-Magnetic Pulse) hit. This resulted in many systems not working unless they were truly EMP hardened under Military Specifications (MILSPEC).At the same time, her husband, Peter Dixon, starts off in Jacksonville Beach, Florida with Danielle's daughter Rachel. Even though chaos ensues, Peter has been somewhat preparing for things like this scenario. The issue is, he was not prepared for what was coming and did not seemed prepared to also have his stepdaughter in tow. Both Danielle and Peter try to continue doing their task at hand regardless of the strenuous and arduous journeys they both encounter. Danielle must help her team and encounter many other military groups to aid in this endeavor. Meanwhile Peter must insure that in all things, Rachel stays safe. After all, I cannot imagine what Danielle would say if something happened to Rachel on Peter's watch. My difficult task is not to spoil anything about the book. Other than what you can read on the Amazon website and any other reviews, I will say this, the facts are fairly well researched, there are exceptions, and the story has some good tidbits of takeaway knowledge. This book should be considered both post apocalyptic and... science fiction. As I mentioned earlier, there is nothing new under the sun, the exception is the concepts used within this story and hopefully the rest of R.A. Peter's books.

Playful and slyly original, Earth Still tells the story of Patricia, a museum curator and the mother of a young son, who falls for a new neighbor, Rennie, in the aftermath of an alien spaceship's unexplained landing in present day Los Angeles. The presence of the ship, along with the apparent absence of a pilot, precipitates a social crisis, while Patricia's affair with the mysterious Rennie creates its own tensions. Referencing art house film directors Chris Marker and Jean-Luc Godard, Italian Futurist writer F.T. Marinetti, and classic science fiction movies, Earth Still is a transfiguring love story, a meditation on the interrelationship of science fiction and visual art, and a riveting fantasy about our obsession with aliens.

Earth Still, by Annette Leddy

From the Back Cover Annette Leddy has written an ingenious re-imagination of the 1951 movie The Day the Earth Stood Still -- in a domestic key, with art-historical overtones.  Earth Still, like its alien visitor, unfolds its humane agenda with charm and grace.  Read the book, watch the movie, then read it again.        Carter Scholz, author of Radiance (PicadorUSA) and Gypsy (PM Press)     Leddy skillfully makes the extraordinary seem an everyday occurrence in the local life of Los Angeles. Its citizens manage to face the simultaneously dramatic and absent invading force with restraint and humor.         William Leavitt, artist and playwright, author of The Particles (of White Naugahyde)

About the Author Annette Leddy is a fiction writer and curator of art archives. Currently she is the New York Collector for the Smithsonian's Archives of American Art and lives in Manhattan.

Though described as a remake of the well known "The Day the earth Stood Still", the take is fresh and insightful. The fleshing out of the characters, especially the odious and predictable Hugh, as the damaged love she thought she needed to work on showed writing that is nuanced and engaging. Who has not encountered this man, the passive aggressive damaged lover that one must take a life time to work through his mother issues with? He is at every dinner party and art opening just trolling for the Patricia's of the world to catch in their needy nets. The innocence and vulnerability of the boy Billy was also very well done, his fears echoing those of the public at large once confronted with the arrival of the mysterious space ship. The juxtaposition of the descriptions of the work place of a curator in the environment of of the rarefied museum air and the hullabaloo around the landing sight are a perfect metaphor. Just as the message that art is what is ultimately missing in the life of aliens. A meaningful message for us all.

Sci-Fi meets Futurismo By Matthew Flamm A lovely, highly original novel that updates the classic sci-fi film The Day the Earth Stood Still in contemporary Los Angeles and combines it with an art-historical look at the Italian Futurist movement--a tall order. Leddy's greatest gift is the ability to integrate the fantastical into ordinary life, giving us the sense that this is exactly how it would feel if a spaceship landed.

A Comic Gem By Ramsay Breslin Patricia, the protagonist of Earth Still, is a single mom and art curator, researching Italian futurism at a “rarified” art institution, while living in a lower middle-class Los Angeles neighborhood with her eight-year-old son, and dog. The book opens at the turn of the twenty-first century, two weeks after a spaceship has landed near Century City: Its doors “opened once then ceased to exist as doors.” Watching the news with her son Billy, Patricia “watches his thoughts shift from imagining an alien to imagining himself an alien.” Later, Billy asks a mysterious new neighbor, a “visitor” from Russia, why he left his home country. “Billy wasn’t at the point yet,” Patricia tells us, “where his mind could take in the systematic suppression of millions.”A wry sense of humor ripples this novel’s gently satiric episodes with sentences that seem to have a direct line to a perpetual sense of amusement. It’s how the book thinks. This does not mean it lacks gravitas. The protagonist is a widow with mixed feelings about her late husband, a war junky and photographer, who took “beautiful, lovely pictures of war” before being “blown to bits by a market bomb in Indonesia.” Like a movie cue, a barking dog interrupts Patricia’s “journey to the land of melancholy,” shifting her low mood into comic observation: Jack (the dog) was “thrilled to be getting the same walk he got every day.”There is little in this novel that escapes the author’s wit. The portrait it creates of Los Angeles is as down-to-earth as it is “deranged,” the word Patricia uses to describe her son’s smile—with the result that everything about this story feels original and understated, deadpan and warm. Moreover, this is a novel written by someone who really knows and understands Los Angeles. You don’t have to be a lover of film, or speculative fiction, to enjoy its ironic allusions. You can be a poet, a Marxist psychologist, or someone who thrives on Hollywood mayhem. Or like me you can be an art and film aficionado secretly drawn to quiet love stories.Like all good satire, the book critiques what it loves. Even if you miss its art and pop culture references (to Marinetti and the Jetsons), or its allusions to the 1951 sci-fi film, The Day the Earth Stood Still, upon which this story is loosely based, you can’t help but be engaged by its poignant domesticity and/or its smart cultural literacy. Yet for all its highbrow/lowbrow, this is an unpretentious book. It’s short; you can read it in a day. But then you’ll want to take another day to read it all over again—to see what you missed. Can’t wait for the sequel.

What is an idiom? An idiom is a word or set of words that have a different meaning than the usual & literal meaning of those words. For example, let’s look at the idiom, “get the ball rolling.” To start a game like bowling or billiards, you roll the ball. So this idiom gives us the idea we are starting something. When we say, “Let’s get the ball rolling,” we mean, let’s begin. You can use this idiom to begin a meeting, a class, or even a road trip. Why learn idioms? Idioms are commonly used in everyday, conversational English. You could being your meeting with “Let’s begin the meeting,” but starting the meeting with “Let’s get the ball rolling” will make you sound more like a native speaker, and more natural. I encourage you to study the lessons in this book, and begin using these idioms in your conversations. You will sound more natural when you do so!
