Jeanne-Marie Bouvier de la Motte-Guyon (commonly known as Madame Guyon), was a French mystic and one of the key advocates of Quietism. Guyon believed that one should pray all the time, and that in whatever one does, one should be spending time with God. "Prayer is the key of perfection and of sovereign happiness; it is the efficacious means of getting rid of all vices and of acquiring all virtues; for the way to become perfect is to live in the presence of God. He tells us this Himself: "walk before me, and be thou perfect" Genesis 17:1. Prayer alone can bring you into His presence, and keep you there continually." As she wrote in one of her poems: "There was a period when I chose, A time and place for prayer ... But now I seek that constant prayer, In inward stillness known ..." Like St. Augustine, St. Thomas Aquinas, Calvin, and Martin Luther, she thought that a person's deliverance can only come from God as an outside source, never from within the person himself or herself. Accordingly, God is supposed to decide who is to be saved, regardless of anyone's efforts or industry. He then, as a result of His own free will, bestows his favor as a gift. This predestination was opposed by the Pelagians, who considered it to be irrational in that God would favor a wicked sinner over a good person.

I am not from this world. I don't know where I was from originally. When our pod landed, I was the only one to survive, and my memory was damaged. That day, I lost the man I think I must have loved. I don't age, and I'm far too strong compared to these humans around me, but even so, I fear their finding out the truth about me. I try to protect the ones I can, but I am weak when it comes to saving them — or even just not hurting them by my ignorance and strength. And now for the first time in decades, I've met a man like myself from another world — the world where we both hatched. I wonder what he can tell me about myself . . . and what I dare ask without giving away the fact that I remember nothing? Length: ~34,000 Science fiction gay romance

It’s either a long novella or a short book (121 pages), but it’s packed with meaning, allegory and love.I seem to be running into a lot of alien gay fiction lately, and I know why. When I was just a boy and first aware of my “errant” sexuality, I invented my own personal Alien. He was a beautiful young man with long, flowing blond hair who radiated absolute acceptance and validation. Though just a fantasy, he allowed me to believe that our world could be a better place, that tolerance, respect and love really would, someday, triumph over stupidity and bigotry. That’s exactly what Ms. Shiloh is telling us in “All the Things I’ve Lost”. Her main character is an alien, an alien who crash-landed on Earth more than 80 years ago. Lee never seems to age, is remarkably strong, impervious to disease, and seems to care passionately about the humans he lives with, interacts with, and saves from mayhem and murder on the streets. The problem is that he can’t remember. Apparently, as a result of the crash (which only he survived), he has forgotten where he came from, his language, his past, even his name. He’s spent the last 80 years constructing a human life, a human persona, someone who fits into human society, but without the hatred, intolerance and anger of too many of the people of the Earth. Over those 80 years, he has also saved a lot of money – his needs are minimal – and used it to relieve the suffering of many of the people around him. Then, one day, everything changes. He comes home to find a total stranger, a beautiful young man, has taken up residence in his apartment. Dion was like him, someone from his planet, someone who might be able to fill in the blanks. He is immediately physically attracted to the elegant man, and more important, he has been so lonely, for so long. He had stopped trying to be with human men when he accidentally killed the first man he tried to be intimate with. He didn’t understand his own strength, at first, nor the delicacy of the human body, and his passion was so intense, so physical, that it crushed this innocent young man. He held him in his arms as he died. Lee never forgave himself, and for 80 years, he never touched another person intimately, out of guilt and fear. Now here’s this gorgeous man, just as strong as he is, someone upon whom he can unleash his pent-up passion without fear of damaging or killing him. They make love, non-stop, for more than a week. They can’t stop touching each other. But, in fact, he doesn’t know Dion and, after a while, wonders what he’s doing, giving over his life to this man he knows nothing about, a perfect stranger. As it turns out, they were “paired” for life by virtue of those first days together. Lee is not happy. Somehow, he seems to have been tricked into gaining a husband, tricked into making a lifelong commitment, one he never intended. As the years move along (just the blink of an eye for men who live for centuries), Lee finds himself drifting away from Dion, trapped by this kind, but needy man he never chose. It breaks Dion’s heart. With the assistance of crystals that came to earth in Dion’s pod, Dion helps him locate debris from the site of Lee’s crash, in the hope of finding any scrap that might tell Lee a little more about who he was, where he came from, and whom he loved. It turns out that Lee was pretty well known on his home planet, where he was a member of a religion with radical beliefs – that all living beings are equally worthy, including men who love men, a novel concept on his planet. It takes so long for his people to reproduce, and reproduction is so rare, that anyone who refuses even the attempt, by pairing with a person of the same sex, is deemed inferior and unacceptable. As Mark Zubro recently wrote in his own alien epic, “Stupidity appears to be universal across the galaxies”.Ms. Shiloh’s main character obviously agrees, and though he came to earth seeking freedom, tolerance and kindness, Earth turns out not to be the paradise he hoped it might be. But still, he makes it his business to practice his beliefs, dedicating his life to helping others anonymously. Lee is often convinced he’s failed, but Dion reminds him that he has changed people’s lives, for the better, in countless ways over the years. Though changing the world might not be possible, trying counts, and that’s a big part of Ms. Shiloh’s message. These are both good men, and though they won’t be able to eradicate hatred and suffering on their own, they can make a dent in it, which is all that can be asked of all good people, both human and alien.A lot of the book revolves around the aliens’ love story. Their relationship is on-and-off-again as Lee sometimes feels trapped by Dion, at other times grateful for his concern and love. It’s only when they travel home again that Lee realizes that they have grown deeply in love, are truly paired, and that he has not been the best husband while he grieved for a past he couldn’t remember. What Ms. Shiloh makes abundantly clear, without preaching or political rants, is that love is love, has nothing to do with gender, and that its core is kindness, concern, caring, consoling and celebrating, whether here on Earth or in some alien galaxy. And she does it beautifully, through the attitudes, dialogue and thoughts of her two main characters, through their native desire to help and to prevent pain and suffering, and through their compulsion to bring love, safety, security and laughter to children. At a time of right-wing religious hate-mongers, a U. S. Presidential primary where all the candidates vie to out-hate each other, in order to pander to the worst elements of the electorate, in which religious groups in the Middle East imprison, hang and throw gays off the roofs of tall buildings, it is important to remember and treasure the author’s profound and beautiful message. This is a small book with a big theme, as only Hollis Shiloh can write it. She is an extraordinary writer, whose heart bleeds at injustice and exalts at love. She is a writer much to be admired, as is “All the Things I’ve Missed”. Don’t miss it. I gladly give it my highest and most heartfelt recommendation.Alan reviews gay fiction for the Sinfully Addicted... blog.

Stranded alone on a foreign planet, with no memories of who he used to be, Lee spends 80 years finding a niche for himself on earth. Until Dion crashes into his life, sending Lee down a path of confusion, learning to deal with feelings from forgotten memories - until the day of a construction accident gives him back those memories, and the pain associated with them. Hollis does a great job of weaving the uncertainty caused by multiple events into a cohesive story of growth, acceptance, and what love really means.

A Good Gay Romance, but Not Science Fiction By Charles Ott I'm an old man and my expectations in love stories were formed a long time ago, in a shyer and less explicit age. Still, I bought a copy of "All the Things I've Lost" to expand my reading scope a little. This book is the moving and affecting love story of Lee, a young man who is doubly an outsider: he's not only gay, he loves humans but isn't one of them. When he finally meets an alien man from his planet, he is distraught to find himself turning into a jerk in the relationship he wanted desperately to find. He eventually works through his problems in a believable and non-dramatic way, and learns to live with the love he can't change anyway. As a gay romance, this book (if you can share the author's enthusiasm for explicit sex) is first-rate, well-written and engaging. I've given it three stars, however, because the science-fiction part of it is very weak soup, indeed. This book suffers from the "cowboys on Mars" problem -- that is, a science-fiction plot ought to be such that it couldn't be written any other way. Lee and his lover Dion are aliens, but nothing important would change in this book if they, like the Coneheads, were from France. Their alien culture is very lightly sketched in, and when they finally travel back to their home planet (which is not even named), it feels pretty much like visiting your lover's parents out in the suburbs. Overall, this is a likable, well-written love story between two men, but there's not much science fiction here.

But when I got farthe into it, I was thoroughly impressed. It had examples of old ancient coins that the author had bought and the different ways of cleaning them! For a coin collector and investor this was a great help. I'm thinking sbout buying some terrible quality coins like the ones in the book and clean them up after reading this.I hope you enjoy this book if you purchase it.:-) -NinjaBoy899

In Japan, it is said that there are 8 million kami. These spirits encompass every kind of supernatural creature; from malign to monstrous, demonic to divine, and everything in between. Most of them seem strange and scary—even evil—from a human perspective. They are known by myriad names: bakemono, chimimoryo, mamono, mononoke, obake, oni, and yokai. Yokai live in a world that parallels our own. Their lives resemble ours in many ways. They have societies and rivalries. They eat, sing, dance, play, fight, compete, and even wage war. Normally, we keep to our world and they keep to theirs. However, there are times and places where the boundaries between the worlds thin, and crossing over is possible. The twilight hour—the border between daylight and darkness—is when the boundary between worlds is at its thinnest. Twilight is the easiest time for yokai to cross into this world, or for humans to accidentally cross into theirs. Our world is still awake and active, but the world of the supernatural is beginning to stir. Superstition tells people to return to their villages and stay inside when the sun sets in order to avoid running into demons. This is why in Japanese the twilight hour is called omagatoki: "the hour of meeting evil spirits." This encyclopedia contains over 125 illustrated entries detailing the monsters of Japanese folklore and the myths and magic surrounding them. This book was first funded on Kickstarter in 2013.

Perfect manual for discovering Japanese demon culture By EFEO Kyoto This book is the second volume of a series on Japanese y'kai folkolore, it illustrates Japanese demon (y'kai) folklore in a very accessible way. Edited like an old grimoire, on 2 pages each creature is presented in a concise yet very efficient way: in an image and text dialog. I would recommend it to any one as a perfect introduction to the fantastic world of Japanese demons.I have also read it on paperback edition, the format is also very well though, the size, the weight, the quality of paper, makes it very handy and practical to read. The size is very well adapted for a kindle format

By Jerra I picked up this book because it was cheap on Amazon, but now I find myself wishing I had paid more for it! It's a beautiful piece of work, well-researched, and to my surprise and utter delight, every single entry is gorgeously illustrated! Highly recommend, for anyone interested in folklore or ghost stories or yokai specifically.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Another incredible exploration into Yokai Mythology from Meyer. By Kenneth Wood Another incredible exploration into Yokai Mythology from Meyer.Much like his first book, "Night Parade of 100 Demons", Meyer goes into great informative depth on the various creatures of Japanese, and to a greater extent, Asian folklore.+The artwork is incredible, a lot of it is modern restorations from ukiyo-e artist Toriyama Seiken's series of 18th centuries bestiaries, brought to the modern day through modern art techniques combined with imagery and ukiyo-e stylization that really makes the artwork come alive. Meyer could probably take all of his Yokai drawings, put them all together in a hardback book and sell them as an artbook, it really is that good.+But thats not all, with each image comes a very detailed and lengthy exploration into the origins, legends, and nature of each Yokai or spirit featured. This is a lifesaver for would-be English Yokai-enthusiasts as most Yokai lore and stories have little to no information in English speaking regions of the world or even on the Web outside of famous Yokai like the Kappa or Oni, but Meyer goes a step further and showcases strange, little known monsters on top of the more famous ones. An example is the Ippon Datara, of which I was only able to get a mere sentence or two surrounding a boar god that turned into one without elaboration into what an Ippon Datara is, Meyer provides a face and very in depth description of a very strange, very unique folkloric critter which I am appalled at the utter lack of information that exists in regards to it in other English speaking portions of the web.+But he doesn't stop at just Yokai, in this book also contains a lengthy portion describing the Japanese Shinto-Buddhist Afterlife (both Meido and Jigoku) as well as Onmyodo practices and spells and even informative glances into Japanese Religion(s) and how the Sun setting and rising plays a role in that and how Yokai are involved therein. The Onmyodo information alone is something I could not find much else on in the english portion of the internet, making a huge bonus for a potential reader.+covers the "three great evil Yokai" (Tamamo-no-Mae, Shuten Doji and Sutoku) as well as the "Three Great evil Onryo" and several other individuals of both historical fact and myth and the legends that involve them, making for a good history lesson of Japan on top of of the mythological aspect of it.+Other myths of Asia are also covered from China, to Okinawa, to even India. Religions too from the Goryo Shinko, Koshin, and even Okinawan Shamanism.+/-For its price (almost as much as a college textbook) its a tough sell, especially as a paper-back book. However, coming from an artists' perspective, I understand given the amount of drawings and artwork Meyer has done himself in the back. Coming from experience, art isn't quick, easy or cheap. Its a time consuming affair and there are over a hundred images in the book the Meyer drew and painted (digitally) himself. So while the text content is lacking in terms of its price-tag, the art, in my opinion more than makes up for it.-If you are familiar with his website, Yokai.com or his blog, you will find that a lot of the entries and art in the book already exist online as well as his Yokai-a-day marathon where he uploads one Yokai entry + art per day, each day in the month of October. Furthermore, his exploration into Meido and Jigoku had already been extensively done on his own blog, which he admits there that his book won't cover much more than what he did there. Thus being a potential downside to a potential buyer, however, one misses out on his informative notes and additions he occasionally adds to entries such as explaining what "karts" has to do with a Kasha, which otherwise does not exist on his website. Something to keep in mind before you decide to spend fifty dollars on a paperback book. All in all, if you are really committed to learning about Yokai and Japanese Folklore/History be you a hobbyist or would be student of Japanese myth, this book is a must-buy and must-own for your digital or even physical collection. The art, the in-depth research and the amount of content is more than enough to justify purchasing it. However if you are not that interested in Japanese folklore, than I honestly, objectively can't justify some regular chap (especially if they don't care for art) spending 55 dollars on a book like this, they are best off going to his Blog or Yokai.com and sating their curiosities that way. However, for me personally, and my own love of Japanese folklore and frustration in trying to find more in depth information, this book has been a lifesaver for me. And I'm sure it will be so to other would-be English researchers of Yokai who can't yet speak or read Japanese. Meyer has truly done a service to the cause of increased knowledge and information about Yokai folklore.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. loved it!! By Abhishek Srivastava Its a great introduction to a awesome framework. I loved the book and I also loved the framework. This book provides good introduction and goes in depth as well.Only criticism I have is that this book did not talk about how to build Cascading apps using Maven, Gradle etc. This is a really important step when learning any jvm language technology these days.

Then each chapter helped build on the previous knowledge, and I found that a logical way to go. I was especially impressed when I got to chapter 8 which walked through a real life project from start to finish. The links to additional information, source code, utilities, libraries, and other content is very useful. This book is not a quick read! But it is clearly written from the perspective of practicing professionals. So it has a lot of helpful tips and suggestions to steer you away from pitfalls. Definitely has my vote.

The disparity between reality and their understanding may cause individuals who think they have a moral high ground to needlessl By Samuel Franklin We live in a time when the public has grave misunderstandings about the role of law enforcement. The disparity between reality and their understanding may cause individuals who think they have a moral high ground to needlessly endanger themselves while interacting with even the best trained officers. Likewise, the officers can be negatively impacted in both their professional and personal lives. There is an urgent need for the public to understand use of force as well as the person that is required to apply it. As if on cue in the farcical drama that has become current media attention on law enforcement, Mr. Bernoulli has drawn on research data, case studies and a lifetime, it seems, of personal experience to bring to the fore the challenges that every officer faces. He clearly conveys the emotional, social, philosophical and even spiritual introspection that most warriors and law enforcement officers of our culture must consider when either preparing for, or recuperating from, their use of force. While the uninitiated have the luxury to critique and blame from the safety that has been gifted to them, Mr. Bernoulli shows that the sentinel who makes their world possible is willing to pay the price of that gift. But the sentinel needs a little help. He shows us what that price might be. In doing so, the reader gains a wealth of understanding into the issues of deadly force in our modern, dangerous, and judgemental society. This is an essential read for anyone delving into the complexities of minds, weapons, and violence. Each topic is, by itself, a dark swamp of complexity. When combined, these issues can only be illuminated with the insight and art that Mr. Bernoulli displays in his recent publication, which is, by all means, reasonable, justified and necessary. I’m looking forward to this author’s next publication as I find myself continually returning to this one, because wherever I open it, I’m immediately engaged by its relevance.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A Must Have for Any Serious Student of Lawful Deadly Force By Andrew F. Branca STRONGLY RECOMMENDED: An informative, intellectual, yet entertaining exploration of the professional, physical, and psychological complexities of deadly force. This is a one-of-a-kind work by an author with exceptional experience in both the practical and theoretical use of deadly force, and he is known to me personally. He’s been there, done that, then studied it and reduced it to an easily accessible book that makes his invaluable expertise available to both the law enforcement officer and the armed citizen. If you’re a serious student of the dynamics of the use of deadly force in defense of innocent life, your bookshelf is not complete until this book is resting on it. — Andrew F. Branca, Attorney at Law, Law of Self Defense

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. One of the most important books for cops. By Amazon Customer As a 15 year veteran cop with over 10 years as a firearms instructor, I could not possibly have a higher recommendation than this book. The frank, real discussion within leaves no stone unturned in the pursuit of bettering the realistic knowledge base of those society asks to step into harms way. This ranks with Dave Spaulding's "Handgun Combatives" and Andrew Branca's "Law of Self Defense" as the three most important titles the should be in every police officer's library of reference material. If you're a cop or if you love a cop, buy this book.

A few pictures, and Q & A's don't go into detail and are written in big font. Very thin book. Daughter is a huge fan but finished it in like 10-15 minutes.
