From the Author I have a seven year-old daughter who is the center of my world. I also see the proverbial "writing on the wall" about where we are headed environmentally, and I worry about my daughter's future. About the Author Dawn Gifford is a Master Gardener and Master Composter, horticulture teacher and Cooperative Extension agent, as well as a certified arborist and Permaculture designer. She founded one of the first greenroof companies and social enterprises in the nation (D.C. Greenworks), and spent 15 years developing award-winning workforce training programs for "green-collar" environmental jobs in tree care, greenroofing and bioretention, and urban agriculture. Turning her interests to home and hearth after becoming a mother, she created the popular eco-blog, Small Footprint Family, to share her experience in sustainable living with a wider audience. Although a Washington D.C. native, she now resides in Southern California with her daughter.

Butler I thought I was already doing a lot to live a green lifestyle - recycling my rainwater runoff, making my own deodorant, using cloth bags for my grocery shopping, giving used clothes to the thrift store, etc. But Dawn's book blasted open my mind to all kinds of further opportunities to live green and save money. In a country where 40 percent of our food goes to waste, it was heartening to learn how to manage my food (don't store vegetables near fruit or they will spoil more quickly! Put an apple in a paper bag to ripen avocados!). This well-written book - a page-turner, really - is full of fascinating factoids like these, as well as inspirational suggestions such as joining a food co-op, leasing solar panels and otherwise becoming the green citizen you've always longed to be. Thank you Dawn for this wonderful service! I'll refer to your book for years to come.

My wife and I are buying property in Costa Rica right now to create a sustainable living situation. I think a lot of people in the US and around the world are feeling the importance of having more control over everything from reducing our carbon footprint to getting away from our dependance on other people growing our food. We are really feeling called to move off the grid, get some windmills and break our addiction to the way life has been that is now destroying the planet.I don't know a lot of experts on the topic, but Dawn seems to have an unlimited supply of knowledge on the subject.Go green. Great read.

By Joe Rigga When people make the decision to live more consciously and sustainably, they're immediately met with an overwhelming amount of marketing and greenwashing. Having a clear, practical and no-nonsense guide is essential. "Sustainability Starts at Home" is that guide. Dawn Gifford is a gifted writer. She has taken a topic that can be paradoxically complex, yet potentially bland, and created a profoundly important book that is fascinating to read. Dawn writes with incredible passion and empathy so the reader feels empowered and ready to take simple but meaningful steps to reduce their own personal footprint. The time for debate is over and the time for action is now. If you're concerned about our planet and future generations, this book is an absolute must read.
