About the Author Ty Foster grew up in Connecticut and began his career as an insurance underwriter. Much to his dismay, there were no photographer positions in that field. He soon quit and began photographing anything he could get his lens in front of, finally settling on animals. From Publishers Weekly Drawing on poker's concept of the tell, a mannerism that can yield clues to an opponent's cards, and numerous behavioral studies in which he has been involved, psychologist Hertenstein has produced a study that is lively and engaging yet unremarkable in its conclusion that both environment and genes influence our decision-making. For example, he reveals that we're able to predict ways an adult might behave by looking at early tells; thus, infants that have insecure attachments to their parents are more likely than those with secure attachments to develop some form of psychopathology later. Various studies have found that facial features can be useful in predicting aggression or lying and cheating: In carefully controlled studies, men with wider faces were three times more willing to lie than slim-faced men. In dating, women choose men based on facial attractiveness, symmetry, smell, and masculinity, while men choose women who are attractive, youthful, and display signs of fertility. About the Author Matthew Hertenstein is an associate professor of psychology at DePauw University in Indiana. Kashdan This is the kind of book that is filled with the interesting, bizarre research findings that you feel compelled to share with someone. Hertenstein even uses a literary device where at the end of each chapter, he gives you the 3 best findings to share at a party.What behaviors help in the early detection of autism in children? and which are myths? p.19How do unhealthy parent-relationships influences the puberty development of girls? p. 36What does a man's face tell us about their potential to be violent? p.62How can you get better at detecting lies? p. 118Why can 5-year old kids predict who wins an election better than your favorite political pundit? p. 164the list goes on in terms of simple cues that can help us predict extremely important behavior. the first few chapters were the best, as Hertenstein does a masterful job describing some of the most interesting findings about early attachment relationships.Because the writing is smooth with ample use of headings and subheadings, I was able to polish off this entire book in a 2.5 hour flight. Its a testament to good content and excellent writing.All this being said, let me list two minor problems I had with the book.1. excessive apologizing and caveats about research limitations. you will find apologies littered throughout the book and in Chapter 5, when the focus is on predicting sexual orientation ("gaydar"), it becomes tedious. If it is too uncomfortable to discuss "the tells of sexual orientation", you should skip the topic.2. several of the examples in the book will be overly familiar. For example, I was surprised to find the 1960 Kennedy-Nixon debate dissected. This event is a mainstay in psychology books and textbooks.It's a good book with a killer overarching theme. From the knowledge in this book, you will be a better judge of yourself and other people.

Informs like the literature; reads like a novel By Angela Bergen This book is a fantastic read, full of knowledge that is very applicable to our everyday lives. Although written by an experienced psychologist the text is written in a very user-friendly way, achieving the goal of reaching the eyes of the general public. The reader does not need any previous literary experience with the genre, as the author inclusively presents all background information making it a standalone read.I can’t think of anyone who wouldn’t be interested in what this book has to offer, since it resonates with the very same rhetorical questions we ask ourselves all the time. How can you make a good first impression? How can you tip the scales in your favor in a job interview? What does our appearance say about ourselves? What verbal and nonverbal expressions really show that a person is lying? Will you have marital success and how long is your spouse likely to live? What kind of attachment style will your child have? What predicts a good teacher or CEO?This book answers these questions and then some. The author more than amply supports his writing with findings from prominent researchers, and summarizes them in to-the-point statements that leave you with the “Wow, really?!” reaction. The findings he shares are astonishing. You will find that your predictive intuition is, in fact, much more accurate than you thought...and for statistically-supported reasons that will certainly surprise you.This book is a quick and enjoyable read. Having finished it, I feel more confident in my predictive abilities as well as feeling privileged to now know some “secrets” of my own tells and the tells of others.

Oversold By Edward Durney On page 4 of his book, Matthew Hertenstein says that "we humans have an uncanny ability to accurately predict a variety of outcomes based on fleeting nonverbal cues." The back cover of the book outlines in more detail what those predictable things are:----- Election results: Kids can predict the outcomes of national elections in a different country based solely on candidates' photos----- Adult personality: With only 45 minutes of observation, one can predict whether 4-month-olds will grow up to become outgoing and bubbly or introverted and anxious----- Corporate success: The profits of Fortune 500 companies can be predicted by nothing more than a CEO's face----- Autism: The chances of your child developing autism can often be predicted long before he has his second birthday party----- Divorce: Expressions in childhood and college yearbook photos foretell whether people will be married or divorced years laterSound amazing? It did to me. Imagine if investors could learn how to determine if a company is going to be profitable by looking at the CEO's face. Before buying a company's stock, just look at CEO pictures. Then choose what stock to buy. Same with politics. If you want to know who is going to win an election, just get photos of the candidates and ask kids in another country to tell you who is going to win. Simple.Trouble is, it's not that simple. Read the book The Tell, and you'll find no amazing secrets like those above that have been revealed by science. Instead, you'll get some personal anecdotes, some superficial studies, and some "party-worthy findings" that you can amaze people with at parties. This is not a serious book. It's more magazine or television style fluffy features that are oversold as something significant.If you like that kind of thing, great. If you like something that is more substance than fluff, take a look at Mindwise: How We Understand What Others Think, Believe, Feel, and Want. That book too delves into the subject of what we can tell from other people, but comes to a different conclusion. In Mindwise, the author thinks that it's very hard to tell what people are thinking from visible clues. In fact, he feels that the best, and really the only reliable way to know what someone is thinking is this: you ask.

Generally, I can take downbeat plots, but nothing worked for me here. The style was choppy. The plot was needlessly coverly complex. And the characters didn't win me over. All in all, this didn't satisfy at all. I don't really think everything can be blamed on the translation, but that might easily be at the root of the problem.

By Bookreporter I will confess that any new book by Anders Roslund and Börge Hellström boldly shoulders itself to the top of my reading pile. Roslund is an award-winning investigative journalist, while Hellström is an ex-convict; one could not concoct a more intriguing writing team out of whole cloth if they deliberately attempted to do so. Roslund and Hellström have demonstrated time and again that they possess the ability to raise and discuss social issues, particularly regarding criminal justice, incarceration and capital punishment, within the framework of riveting crime fiction --- and to do so in a remarkably even-handed manner.TWO SOLDIERS, their latest novel to be published in the United States, brings their focus to the issue of juvenile gang crime in a way that will satisfy readers who have been on board with them from the beginning, as well as those who are experiencing their work for the first time.This is the sixth proper installment in the series featuring Stockholm DCIs Ewert Grens and Sven Sundkvist. The narrative is not told in chapters, per se, but is presented for the most part in short chops of a page or two, where point of view can change capriciously. This may take a bit of getting used to for the unwary, but it propels the story along very well and does not take long at all before things sort themselves out.The overall focus of the narrative is a street gang known as the Raby Warriors. The group takes its name from the town of Raby, where they are based, an all-but-forgotten hellhole of a place that moves to its own dysfunctional and dystopian rhythm. The gang is led by two toughs named Leon and Gabriel, blood brothers whose ambitions range far beyond the pitiful streets of their miserable suburb. They have gone far with the practice of recruiting children to carry out their criminal enterprises, but they plan to increase both territory and influence by carrying out a daring, all-but-insane prison break at the Aspas Maximum Security facility. Their nemesis on the law enforcement side is Jose Pereira, who is the head of Stockholm’s Organized Crime and Gang section in Raby.When the prison breach is successfully executed, Grens is tapped to lead the investigation into the matter. His efforts uncover the connection to the Warriors, and to Leon and Gabriel in particular. Pereira, already dealing with the fallout occasioned by the Warriors in Raby, joins with Grens in an attempt to shut down the Warriors for good, using methods legal and otherwise to do so.TWO SOLDIERS is not misnamed; it chronicles a war on the streets where the forces of law must often become what they behold in order to be effective. It is raw, brutal and real without being gratuitous in its presentation of violence. Even with all of this, however, Roslund and Hellström never lose control of the intricate plotting and pacing. And yes, that is true even with the choppy narrative and merry-go-round changing of point of view, both of which add to rather than detract from the book’s readability. Gorman To me, this book is very much a matter of taste, more than any other I have reviewed to date. I read the two prior translated books (Three Seconds and Cell 8) and enjoyed both of them, so I was looking forward to the next entry. There was very little this book had in common with the other two, and very little that I enjoyed. Obviously, I point these out based on my personal likes /dislikes and others may find more redeeming qualities in the story.The book was WAY TOO LONG... it moved slowly, and the beginning 100 + pages or so did nothing to "hook" me into reading the rest..though I struggled through it.I thought it lacked suspense, though others seemed to find suspense in the action.The book set the most depressing tone of any I've read...and I average over 100 mysteries, thrillers, action/adventure reads a year from a wide variety of authors. I assume the authors set out to create a very,very depressing environment, and if so, they were very successful. It just wasn't my cup of tea.Related to the depressing environment, the vulgarity was over the top, though I suspect the authors needed to use so much of it to create the proper atmosphere. I know prison and the backstreets are tough and vulgar areas, but enough is enough.Through most of the book I felt law enforcement was inept and frightened to act, and this band of young toughs controlled them at every turn. For me, this fact took away much of the suspense and made the action extremely predictable, but not very believable. I kept hoping the book would change direction, but it never did for me.In conclusion, I did not enjoy reading this book and would not recommend it. Others obviously felt differently. I am very glad it was on loan from the local library as a "free" read.If you enjoyed Three Seconds and Cell 8 and are expecting more of the same, be prepared for a noticeable departure in atmosphere, pace, and suspense when reading Two Soldiers.

Some focus on legal, others on ethical aspects of the new war with no rules except what the drone users themselves are willing to put in place. A must read for anyone whom this state of affairs unnerves.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. This is a great book to curl up with in front of the ... By Robert Loftis I was transported by "Climbing the Rain." One of the hardest things to do in science fiction writing is to create a world that is both exotic and believable. As I was reading this book, I could visualize the high rain forest at the center of the story: it became real to my mind's eye. The story develops smoothly with some interesting twists and turns that keep it from becoming predictable; the science doesn't overwhelm the fiction. And the characters are alive. This is a great book to curl up with in front of the fire with a glass of wine. Fans of science fiction will appreciate it; those new to the genre will find it a great introduction.

I highly recommend this book for anyone By reader1953 This is a compelling and completely absorbing story that transports you to an exotic planet in another universe. The world Cincotta creates is so real that it's a bit of a shock to put the book down and not be in a rain forest canopy 2 miles above the surface of a distant planet. I highly recommend this book for anyone, not just science fiction readers.

I may not be the best judge, science fiction/fantasy not being my usual genre, but after struggling for the first few pages to get into it, I was blown away by the complexity of the characters, the intriguing narrative and the sheer breadth of imagination needed to sustain the "other-worldness" of the setting. I suppose that's what it takes to write a successful entrant in this genre. "Climbing the Rain" is a quick, page-turning read that propels you to its climax.

The author is Sun Certified Java CAPS integrator and Oracle Partner Network (OPN) Certified Specialist for Oracle WebCenter 11g. He is also among the top 10 rank holders in India for ICFAI's GK national level competition. He has been recognized by Computer Sciences Corporation (CSC) with an outstanding performer award.
