The plot is sufficiently convoluted (hmm that word sounds bad... whats the good version of it?) to be very interesting, the characters have interesting struggles and flaws, the ups and downs were fun to read and in no way paint-by-numbers or telegraphed 100 pages in advance. It truly felt like there were six or so main characters, all fully flushed out and well crafted to stand on their own. I pray theres a sequel!Best of all, my goodness do you get won over by the lizardman culture. it is so alien to our own, but it comes to life, in a consistent and highly believable fashion. I dont know if Mr Jones patterned it after Mayan or who knows what on earth, but it is so believable and yet clearly alien to "human" culture that it is worth the read just by itself. Its internal logic is clear and, as you learn about them, all of their actions make perfect sense under their foreign set of values of what is important and unimportant.Great story, great characters, and all set with a clash of cultures - how many books can you say had you on the edge of your seat as two characters discussed the meaning and purpose of a legal contract? Haha!Its fantastic, a must-read for any fantasy fans.

Being based on the Pathfinder Roleplaying game, this book was a bit of a stretch in regards to my normal proclivities. The description was interesting enough to make me overlook the game ties and give it a shot, I'm glad I did. The characters are engaging, the settings unique, the creatures fantastical, the spells magical, and the story line easily draws you in. Pick up a copy and step into a world of magic, pirates, treachery and adventure!

Enjoy the Lunar prison break by a one Dirk Haston determined to leave with his entire family. He's against the tough prison director, Soren Zolnai.

Other movies that have come out in a similar genre were something else that related to it. I liked it. It was well written, mixing dialogue and narrative. By Tom Sales I've read all three of Kevin's books--two of which are apocalypse stories. His first book "The Storm" seemed unlikely, but just today I heard Dan Rather talking about a possible attack on our electric grid and how people wouldn't survive it long ... exactly the scenario in Kevin's first book. Let's just hope the zombie apocalypse described in "Terra Mortius" isn't also a viable scenario.As in all three of his books, we jump around to different points of view in each of his short, readable chapters. At the end of many chapters something shocking happens and then we jump over to the events from a different person's perspective to catch up on what had just happened. Kevin beautifully weaves these different chapters together as the story plays out. By meeting different groups who are converging on the small island of Terra Mortius, we also learn more about the zombie plague that has consumed the planet. But the focus here is not on the zombies as much as the impact this danger has had on first three families, then an individual, and finally a fourth family who are all thrown together to survive.As was the case with Kevin's other stories, this is a fast read. Not so much because it is short (168 pages) but because it is consuming. Survival stories are always captivating as the players use MacGyver-like planning and ingenuity to cheat death (or in this case something that's worse than death). Kevin does a great job of laying out those plans to use what is available without making everything feel like a set-up. From Booklist The emphasis here, as in Moore's last book, The Soul's Religion (2002), is on suffering, and that book's mission of counseling readers on how to deal with suffering is extended more practically here--that is, provided you are primarily a seasoned reader capable of being consoled by others' written testimony, which Moore would have you consult. His advice for coping with "dark nights of the soul"--itself a literary framing of a concept, derived from the writings of the Spanish mystic, St. John of the Cross--draws habitually upon literature, though he cites movies now and then (his consideration of Humphrey Bogart as an actor who used his childhood suffering to create positive characterizations is most intriguing and persuasive--and ultimately dependent on Eric Lax's biography of Bogey). The book's parts expand upon the different dark nights of the soul arising from three different kinds of experiences: life "passages," "disturbances" of normal or optimal states of being (chiefly in relationships), and "developments" in life that provoke emotional, mental, and physical suffering. In the last section in particular, Moore dispenses less literarily mediated therapeutic advice, but he keeps intact throughout the soothing tone that, ever since Care of the Soul (1992), has powered his books regularly to berths on the best-seller lists. Melillo John of the Cross's writings show the total intensity and detachment of one who has reached a point of union with God that is a sheer gift of grace. The Dark Night of the Soul is among the greatest writings of mystic theology and experience, and highly recommended for those who have some understanding of the concepts of which he writes. The total turning of the will to God, to a point where nothing on earth can satisfy the lover except union with the Beloved, is a marvellous and deeply moving "sight" - and the exquisite poetry here is one of the best expressions in the history of Christianity.This said, it is essential that one have background in order to understand this work. (More easily understood introductions, such as Thomas Dubay's "Fire Within," should precede reading the Dark Night.) John is by no means writing of depression or misery, nor is his path one which is common to all (or indeed many) Christians. Let the serious Christian seeker approach this work with humility - it pre-supposes knowledge and an openness to divine love that is far from universal. And, above all, take John's cautions against self-deception to heart as much as he did.

An Insight Into The Mystical By James Gallen "The Collected Works of St. John of the Cross" consists of the writings of this 16th century Spanish Mystic and Doctor of the Church. St. John was a Carmelite friar and friend of St. Theresa of Avila. A valued spiritual counselor, many of his works were written as instruction to religious who sought his guidance.The book consists of four major works and many minor works. The major works are "The Ascent of Mount Carmel", "The Dark Night", "The Spiritual Canticle" and "The Living Flame of Love". Each of the major works consists of a poem, written by St. John, and an extensive, word by word, explanation. In the explanation, St. John reveals his own theology, supported by verses from Scripture.The minor works consist of letters written to his contemporaries as well as a collection of St. John's poetry.This is definitely not light reading. The reader must concentrate on his the text in order to appreciate what he is reading. I am glad that I read it from two perspectives. From an historical perspective, it provides the reader with a good introduction into the world of mystical writing. More importantly, from a spiritual perspective, this book gives the reader an insight into God's call to all Christians to draw themselves more closely to Himself. The spirit of this book is difficult to explain. It is a classical book which is better experienced than described.

As a spiritual guide and deeply religious man, trained in theology at the best Spanish universities of his day, he was able, as few others, to elucidate scripturally and doctrinally the ways of the Lord.Primarily, though, he is a poet, and his poetry speaks for itself in deeply symbolic language, the language of love. He is also a man of his country and era. His two poles Toda-Nada, All-Nothing, no doubt were associated for him with the rugged beauty of Castile--the blazing Spanish sky above arid ground, with the sun glinting upon walled cities, the freezing night with brigands concealed in the darkness.John and Spain speak the language of extremes, just as St. Francis of Assisi was a man of the Umbrian hills set with flowers and vines among shaded valleys. There is a tendency to contrast the harshness of one with the sweetness of the other, but this is to do a disservice to both. Both at heart are similar because they see the way to God as the way of giving all-desiring nothing but him, and letting the rest go: "My God and my All."In this, Jesus Christ is the model, and there is no spiritual growth apart from the earnest imitation of him. "Be continually careful and earnest in imitating Christ in everything, making your life conform to his," John writes in The Ascent of Mount Carmel, almost as a key sentence. Only in this light can we understand his insistence on the denial of desires.What he has in mind are all those selfish and self-seeking ways we go about trying to have God and what we want as well. It is not that other people and other things are not lovable and desirable, or that God wants the way to him to be miserable. It is that the only true joy is found in Jesus, and having him we have all else besides.John's writings sound demanding. He understood in an experiential way that God is not to be had on the cheap. Perhaps in our own day Bonhoeffer's works could be profitably re-read on the cost of discipleship, which John well knew--his had not been an easy life.In the journey of the soul to God as John depicts it in the Ascent and the Dark Night he points to faith as the guide, and faith is dark to the understanding. We must just trust God and go forward with no assurance apart from his word.The saint probes the causes of why many begin this journey but make no progress. It is that self-love insinuates itself, and this must be eradicated by persistent effort in action and loving attention to God in humble prayer, no matter if we feel dry or empty of inspiration: John reveals the way of prayer as a way of great self-denial. We must not rely on anything we can see, feel, taste, experience, for God is more than all these. Only dark faith touches and holds him, and in this there is nothing to delight the senses or boost the ego. By purifying the soul of all that is not God, God strips us in order to clothe us anew in Christ. Nothing gives place to the All, sorrow is turned into joy.In The Spiritual Canticle and The Living Flame of Love, where John treats more explicitly of union with God, he does so in terms of lover and Beloved. In the former he bases his poem and commentary on the Song of Songs, in the latter upon the imagery of the Holy Spirit as flame, wounding and burning as it prepares the soul to be consumed in the fire of love's ecstasy.But perhaps in his letters most of all we see John as an understanding counselor, warm and loving, yet allowing no compromises. The way of the Christian can only be the way of Christ and his cross, and John puts the Gospel demands before us in all their unadulterated strength.His is not a path of visions, ecstasies, abnormal phenomena. Rather, he rejects all these as diverting us from the God whom we can only know by faith, not by the "spectacular" which many so-called spiritual people seek. Union is not felt bliss but "the living death of the cross," as he says in the Ascent. God has spoken his final word in his Son, we have no need to seek anything but him as he is revealed to us in his life and teaching. To want other words, other revelations, is to seek self...."Seek and you shall find, knock and it shall be opened to you." The words of Jesus are as true today as they ever were. Those who want God and seek him singlemindedly will find him to their everlasting Joy--as did St John of the Cross.

I found dirty spot on the book By Miss Liattie The book is new but dusty, I found dirty spot on the book, nothing major but still I am disappointed, it seems like they just threw the book on the box and ship it. I paid a lot of money and I got pretty upset receiving the box (...) Cause they can do better.I love buying on Amazon, I have been so happy with all my orders before but this time this order deserve 3 stars.Anyway, the access code for OWL was inside of the book, and it is a good looking book too!

If it is hard for you to distinguish your colors at night or in low light areas in your house when you try to color, purchase a Day Light bulb, this is a type of bulb that provides a brighter light and mimics daylight and colors are true.

If only it could be transferred as temporary tattoos, what fun it would be! This is my 11th book in this Creative Haven Series by Dover Publications so you know I love to color! As with all the editions of these books by different artists, they are aimed at the adult who uses coloring as a creative outlet or just to de-stress.The designs by Marty Noble are very intricate and in many cases require a lot of fine motor skills to color very many tiny, detailed spaces. I personally like using colored pencils but since the pages are individually perforated, one can tear out a page to color with other mediums; pastels, pens, markers or even watercolor, if you dare.A side note: be careful using watercolors since the paper weight (measured by how much a ream or 500 sheets weigh) I'm guessing, is between 24-28lb, so it's pretty porous; unlike water color paper which can be anywhere between 90-300lb! There would be increasing penetration of color through the paper based on the water content of the medium you use, as previously mentioned, with pencil having the least " leak-through" and watercolor having the most. In fact, I wouldn't suggest watercolor unless you dry paint but then it sort of defeats the purpose of water color. I digress...There are 31 patterns/designs that the book describes as being "derived from the ancient art of henna body painting" and "based on authentic Indian, African, and Middle Eastern sources." There's something for everyone: animals like elephants, peacocks, camels as well as intricate paisleys, a few faces, several medallion/mandala shapes and some flowers too. In terms of the abstract geometric designs using straight lines, like you find in some Middle Eastern tiles for example, you won't find that in this book. Still, very detailed, good time-consuming, de-stressing pictures to color! I think Dover tapped into a new niche with these publications!

Remembering to Believe By Colleen Horning On March 13, the lifestyle/entertainment television show I produced for three years in Dallas was suddenly cancelled. The glitz, glamour and talking to movie stars - gone without a warning. Only a few short weeks later, another star faded. We had to put our 14-year-old Pomeranian, Zoe, down. The feeling of being lost began to set in, and the tears began to flow. Ironically, an advance-copy of a book was passed on to me called, "Dogtology." I really liked the byline under the title: Dogtology… Live.Bark.Believe. The word that really stuck with me there was “Believe.” so I started to read it. As I read, there was an instant connection, reminding me why I believe in Dog. Jeff’s clever way of explaining this commonality many have with their four-legged companions was something I could relate to. A few tears continued to come, but they began to be replaced with laughter and a new understanding as I read. The chapter titled “Book of Bones,” talks about why we as humans seek something to believe in, and why we’re disappointed when we find imperfection. But, one constant can be our dogs. He reminds us we constantly get love, unconditional acceptance, loyalty, inspiration and courage from our furry friends. He also highlights that dogs live in the moment. It’s that revelation that brought me back to where I’m at in my life. Be ready however, Jeff is going to provide a few shockers and LOL's in this "dogtrine." I have a new insight into thinking with my heart and making the most of today like my sweet Zoe did. I’ve found a new sense of why dogs can save us when we feel lost… I am now an Editor for a newspaper and look forward to sharing Dogtology with my fellow Believers. Live.Bark.Believe. I couldn't even begin to believe how long it was, however. Mr. Lazarus is brilliant! First of all, his analogies will make you laugh until your cheeks and sides hurt from laughing so much. I don't know how he thinks these things up but they are amazing!Second, he REALLY. knows dogs and their "pet parents". I was blown away from the wisdom that he possesses to be able to include ALL dog lovers, and not just certain breeds. My Mom is an absolutely bonfied Dogologist. She will buy enough dog "chicken jerky" treats for a whole month (those things are very expensive), BEFORE she pays her bills. If there is no money left for groceries, "Well that's just too bad now, isn't it". And, there are so many things listed that define her as a Dogologist. So, I know firsthand that what Mr. Lazarus writes about is dead on true. You can't tell I am a Catakist, can you? I hope not.Third, he wrote some very profound things about traits dogs have that people lack. It almost made me ashamed to be of the human race. He really made his point loud and clear. Dogs don't scream and yell at people. People may even do that to dogs as well as other people. Dogs are forgiving, loving without expecting something in return, and are always by your side (even if you are sad). There is much more. And the way he tells it nearly made me cry.There are so many different things, that if you are any part of a Dogologist, you will recognize and then laugh!!! I am in that category. I grew up with many neighbor's dogs, that I wish were mine. There are myriads of books about dogs out there. Why should you buy this one? It is very comprehensive as far as talking about dogs and their "pet parents" go. It will make you laugh, may make you cry, and you get something out of this book which will stick in your heart, always. And, if you know a true dog lover, like I do, this book would make the greatest gift you could ever buy them.I was given an advance copy of this book to read and give my honest review.

Dogtology is such a book. It comically makes the point that our obsession with dogs amounts to nothing less than a “bone-a-fide” religion. It then proceeds to explore the tenets, rituals, and trappings of this newly named religion in hilarious ways. Dogtology is really a book about the bizarre behavior of humans around dogs. As a result, it mines comic turf that other dog humor books often miss. Beneath the author’s smart sense of humor and obvious doggy love are some genuinely thought-provoking ideas. I’ve found my new bathroom book!

This is Anne Lamott, for heaven's sake...and that means it's funny! As in, laugh- till-you-can't-read-the-words-through-the-tears-in-your-eyes funny. (Some call this therapy, and I'm inclined to agree.)Though aimed at writers, this book is full of sage advice and razor-edged honesty for the average joe. If you're a writer--and I claim to be one--it's more than a few anecdotes and good advice; it's a lifeline in the thrashing seas of rough-draftdom, a foothold on the sands of jealousy and vain ambition. Anne makes it clear that writing must be pursued for something other than mere publication. (Though, to be honest, I know she's just trying to let the majority of us down easy.) Writing is about letting go, growing, facing truths, and holding on.I'm hooked on Lamott. She slaps me in the face with her startling revelations, nudges me in the ribs with her unpredictable humor, and prods my frozen little writer's hands back into action with warm compassion. This book won't solve the mechanical aspects of my writing, or lead me on the path of structural excellence, but it will spark my creativity, free my characters to be true to themselves, and, ultimately, shake me from my doldrums back into the writing mode.In a society addicted to mindless facts and information, "Bird by Bird" reminds us--writers or otherwise--that it's all about heart. Funny, inspiring, & wise--but get your craft elsewhere By A Customer If there's a better book to read when you're doubting yourselfand your writing ability, I don't know what it is. IF YOU WANT TOWRITE by Brenda Ueland may be more profound, but it's not as funny... I don't think Lamott copied Ueland at all. Both books are wonders, Ueland's more spiritual or mystical--i.e. how to express your own unique self and write your truth--and Lamott's more worldy--how to get your rear in gear and start producing copy. Lamott's chapter on crumby first drafts lets you know you must start somewhere and can't do that if you're constantly criticizng and editing yourself. And she is so right--once you have a beginning, you can make it better..and better...and better. She doesn't really tell you how to do that in very specific terms, but for that there's great sourcebooks like SELF EDITING FOR FICTON WRITERS and ON WRITING WELL, which more than cover the job. Bird by Bird may be short on craft, but it's long on motivation, humor, and practical ways to get yourself writing.

A lovely experience of a painful process By Stacey M Jones BIRD BY BIRD: SOME INSTRUCTIONS ON WRITING AND LIFE by Anne Lamott is a lovely, lovely, lovely book! Of course it is about writing, but it is also about any kind of longterm endeavor that is challenging, that creates self-doubt, and that is a channel for self _expression and self actualization. Lamott's Christianity and general spirituality, which is expressed in this book as a side note to her writing focus, is warm and friendly, and her personality, humorous and inclusive and confident, is wonderful for the reader to share. I LOVED the process of reading this book, of being with it.This book has a charming and engaging introduction and then is divided into parts on Writing (which includes chapters called "Getting Started," "Short Assignments," "Perfectionism," "False Starts," "Plot Treatment," and "How Do You Know When You're Done?"), The Writing Frame of Mind (with chapters like "The Moral Point of View," "Broccoli," "Radio Station KFKD," and "Jealousy"), Help Along the Way ("Index Cards," Calling Around," "Writing Groups," and "Someone to Read Your Drafts" and "Writer's Block"), and final sections called "Publication -- and Other Reasons to Write" and "The Last Class."While I actually think the writing lessons of this book are secondary to the wonderful life lessons this book contains, I have found myself using these lessons. I love the idea that first drafts can be BAAAAAAAAAAD with no harm to anyone! It's incredibly liberating and freeing, and allows one to write whatever one has to write with self-permission to do a bad job the first time round because you know you'll correct it later on. If you write ANYTHING this book will give you practical, helpful advice to advance and improve.I underlined in this book, which is something that as a librarian's daughter, I almost never do, but this book feels like a reference, a guide, in a way that other works do not. I underlined things like, "Hope is a revolutionary patience" on page xxiii and "Because for some of us, books are as important as almost anything on earth" on page 15.Lamott quotes from other wondrous writers, she writes about events in her own life that elevate her and that enervate her. But everything she writes is about taking lots of small steps in one direction. I literally laughed and cried while reading this wonderful and wondrous memoir about the process of writing and how life's pains and joys illustrate this process for Lamott ... I nearly wished I still taught freshman composition so I could use it as a text book. It is the most honest, charming, personable and true description of the painful and rewarding act of writing that I have ever read. I recommend it to anyone, writer or not, who is engaged in a longterm, or even lifelong endeavor. Anne Lamott will simultaneously soothe and inspire any reader of BIRD BY BIRD.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A great conclusion to the Riga Hayworth series By Jack V. Johnson "The Hermetic Detective" is a great way to end the Riga Hayworth series. Riga finally has (almost) everything she's wanted, but of course nothing is ever that straightforward for her. Trouble and adventure seek her out, and she can't walk away from an elderly woman's plea for help. (Super)Naturally, the woman's problems are just the tip of the iceberg, and Riga is soon in the middle of a dangerous case - but with a husband and twin infants, it's not just her life at risk.The story takes some great twists and turns, and is an altogether enjoyable read. I will miss reading Riga's adventures. On the bright side, there's plenty of opportunity for a related series! (Sorry, no spoilers...) And in the meantime, Kirsten Weiss has other great books to read...

By Candy As a fan of the series I am happy to report that the latest in the continuing series of magical mysteries featuring Riga Hayworth is a fun read! Riga is now the mother of twins and her maternal instinct (and maternal duties) are front & center in her mind and in the novel. Other fans of the series will be happy to know that both her niece and Brigitte are back with new installments/dimensions of their lives. As always in Kristen Weiss' work, the sense of place is fabulous and the magical scenes are unique & credible! I particularly loved the persona of the demon in this novel. Don't hesitate. Download this one today!

Kristen's writing style continually evolves and she is a masterful handler of description. We read them all, each book better than the last and while we've moved on to her Sensibility Grey, and are really enjoying it, we will cherish hope that KW will add more Riga Hayworth stories in the future. We enjoy her work as much as Ben Aaronovitch, Jim C Hines, Benedict Jacka, Mike Sheldon, and Jim Butcher, so that's high praise indeed!!
