5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Absolutely fabulous By Fencer I loved the White Hell series, though I'm not sure I can really articulate why--but I was never that charmed by Elezar. He struck me as a brute and kind of boring, so when I saw that this book was going to be about him and his 'second chance' at love, I honestly wasn't expecting to enjoy it that much.Gosh, though, I couldn't have been more wrong! I can say that while I really enjoyed the White Hell books, I loved Elezar and Skellan's story THAT much more! It was a bit slow-going at first--and the summary honestly didn't hook me. I wasn't entirely sure there was even going to BE a romance, or if it would just be more general plot, action-adventure type stuff. If anyone reading this review feels the same uncertainty--fear not! The relationship between our protagonists is built exceedingly well, provided you're patient. The payoff, though, is well worth any wait.As for the likely question of, "Soooo Javier and Kiram...?" rest assured that they not only have cameos, they have fairly large roles in the book (around the size of Elezar's in their book), and it's refreshing seeing Elezar, his beau, and their relationship through the eyes of these people who know Elezar so well.I'm aching for more in this series, because Scarlet Wolf books have shown me that I'm just not ready to bid farewell to these characters or this author!

Needless to say, I will be searching out the rest of the books set in this world. On to the review. This is exactly what I was looking for in romance fantasy. The writing is smooth, and the characters are well developed. The back story for Elezar is heart breaking and goes a long way to explain his outlook and actions. The mystery around Skellan is not to hard to figure out, but the final reveal is well played and actually suspecting the answer adds a certain appeal oddly enough. There is some violence and a touch of gore, but appropriate to the scenes and not excessive. The sex is not graphic so if that's what you're looking for sorry. The romance and relationship building is very well handled and engaging. There are a few editing errors, but the brain tends to automatically correct them, and not really difficult. As far as the ending goes; well it made me want to grab the second book and dive into the rest of the story. Isn't that the best an author can do?

Yes, there were some copy edit issues that really surprised me and yes, I cringed at the cliché use of the scorned woman going bad (seriously authors, women do have other motivations in life than men), but mostly I really quite enjoyed this.I found Elezar's tarnished honor and torn desires created a complex hero and I thought that Skellan, as a wholly under-estimated badass, was endearing. Their slow burn relationship was a pleasure and the Grimma/witches was an interesting culture.However, though it was fun to see Javier and Kiram again, I admit they didn't seem to add much to the plot and I thought Elezar and Skellan deserved the stage to themselves. But maybe J & K will become more important in book 2. Lastly, I thought that the villain was defeated too easily. Not in the sense that it was an easy thing to do or without sacrifice, but that the understanding of what to do and actually doing it seemed to come out of nowhere and be accomplished in a very short, almost anti-climatic amount of time.So, I had complaints, but mostly I enjoyed then and can't wait to jump into book two.Note: borrowed from library

As I read, I felt their fear, the social innuendos, doubts and their successes in each chapter. Author Leta P. Hawk, has renewed my love of reading. By giving readers detailed, but never overly weighty insight from Kyrie's point of view, she builds a connection to the reader that endears one to her plight. Kyrie is refreshingly average, but quirky enough to make the reader feel as though this young lady could easily be your own best friend. The main character is purely relatable. Leta P. Hawk skillfully draws parallels between the other characters and her antagonist. You will find yourself riding along happily through the emotional roller coaster as you fear, gasp, smile, and hold your breath between the page turns. The only disappointment about this book was that I finished reading it. I hope to see many more from Leta P. Hawk.

I have to admit, it's not often I come across a ghost/paranormal book that keeps me on my toes. The Newbie is like any other story really.... it's a old haunted house. Common right? It is, but I have to say, there is something about the way Leta Hawk wrote it that left me wanting more and wondering what will happen next. I enjoyed all the characters EXCEPT the main character. She was way to whiny and cried way to much. It kinda annoyed me that she wanted to be big and bad but the second something made a noise she turned into a blubbering mess, needing a guy to carry her out of the house. What I do like is that nothing stopped her. Even though the guys gave her hell and she WAS a cry baby (and she knew this) she didn't let it stop her from going back and trying to solve the mystery. The ending was okay... but I really expected more from it. Especially the big finale... it just left me going "what... that's it?! What a rip off!" Though it does leave me curious about what will happen in book two. Hopefully the big showdown will be awesome. Lol―Reviews of a fearstreetzombie

Highly Recommended By Corey Sanders After learning quite a few programming languages such as Java, HTML, and a little bit of C++, I have found that this language does seem a little bit more complex, but I think that makes it all the better in my opinion. XML Programming Success in a Day written by Sam Key does get into a lot of detail through graph drawings, and perfectly explained directions.

Please note that most of these reviews listed here are bogus. I clicked on that last four reviewers and they had all reviewed the same books. Why would so many people even care about XML to write 259 reviews? It doesn't make sense. Please beware of these false reviews and don't spend $14 for this simple book.

Do not buy this book if you intend to read it on your PC using the Kindle app.This doesn't say the book is bad. It's an Amazon/Kindle App problem on PC.UPDATE:So i read a bit more. I think the book is really bad, all those good reviews here are bogus imo. The first 20 pages are written in an understandable way (so anyone checking the first pages gets the impression it is a good book). Then suddenly starting with chapter 3 the style changes completely and becomes confusing and unreadable. Suddenly nothing is explained anymore and the book becomes useless/worthless.To summarize: Kindle version has presentation problems, and the book itself is unreadable after a good start. It's the first time i want my money back as i feel double cheated by Amazon (Kindle version, bogus reviews). Clearly i can't trust the reviews here anymore in the future.I requested a refund.

It is eminently readable, unbelievably fun, and exquisitely crafted.This time around we encounter Viking warriors, battle zeppelins, magical intrigue, political machinations, pseudo-Jesuits, murderous air elementals, bureaucratic communists, a ceiling-mounted dragon skeleton, personal betrayals, and free-floating pansexual lust.The action is swift. The characters are absorbing (although a bit too proud and obstinate, at times). M. Harold Page takes delight in subverting our expectations. He knows the genre clichés well enough to toy with them; to titillate and sometimes distract us from his true intentions.The world-building is both intricate and playful - Page drops hundreds of little clues about the history, culture and politics of Westerland, and amusingly dares us to draw parallels to our own.I have come to look forward to each new chapter of this series. I cannot wait to see what delights Mr. Page has in store for us next.

A strong second volume in the series By Jack Badelaire Although shorter by about fifty pages, and only getting into the action in the last third of the book, this second installment in the "Swords Versus Tanks" series adds a lot to the overall story, introducing another culture, elaborating a great deal on the power of the magic used by the knights in their armor and weapons, and giving a greater look at the science and technology of the Egality. There's also a lot of good character development, and the stakes are definitely anted up for the next book in the series.I docked a star from this review because of the considerable disparity in length compared to the first book, leaving this story feeling only half-done compared to the first volume (especially noticeable reading them back-to-back), and for clumping the majority of the action at the very end of the book, so that the excitement of the story amps up only to...come to an end that doesn't quite work as a cliffhanger.Still and all, a very good addition to the series, and I hope to dive into Book 3 soon.

During the summer between my third and fourth grade the school library was open. I checked this out, and although it took two whole weeks(!), I read the tale of the Iliad for the first time. I reread it from time to time until I bought a 50 cent copy of Rouse's Iliad to read over summer break between the seventh and eighth grades (bought Rouse's Odysey from the SBS in the seventh grade). I was going to say this was the perfect version for grade school students, not to easy, not to hard. It is after all billed for "boys and girls." But now I'm not so sure. Someone is using this in junior high. Seems strange to me. I wonder whether the Flashman illustrations are included they are a bit tame in 2013 but I would say they were "advanced" for 1960. In any case Church's retelling of the story is a good place for children to start. This one is a gem.

By Melinda Voltaire The book has it's charm.First of all, my 10 years old can manage to read the actual BIG people edition of Illiad but I thinkthat this version is good to get started on because it is written in very kids friendly way.Do not expect classic text formating as you find in the classic Illiad bok.. poem style.This book is a flow of text.. sentences. paragraphs .. chapters.. kids this age are usedto the very exact of formating as alll their novels are formated just like it.I am not going to get into details of the traslation or the style and all as others did it already.I am goig to focus on the form of the book.What I like:It is hard cover, Very beautful in prerson, it was pleasure to take ot f the boxIt has no paper cover over the hard cover but no prblme for me. It fels like old books.It has quality heav paper that feels good too. Page are not dark or yellow so thatmakes it eay on eyes,so is the text, although bit on the older print side but large and comfortable to read without glasses if youneed normally +1 or 2., you can read this text without glasses easily.Size is good, comfortable for the little ones. Pages not to long to keep it flowing.Overall except for the price, that I think it is too steep it is a good book.I intend to keep this in the family as heirloom. Perfect feel for this puprose.

The notes, “This book began its life as a doctoral dissertation, and … has undergone extensive editing and rewriting in order to make it readable and indeed palatable for a general audience” (xvii); however, McCullough states that this work “submits itself for approval and approbation…first and foremost, to the growing body of scholars and practitioners in the field of theological aesthetics” and “[s]econdly…to those in practical theology” (xv). I’m not certain that it has indeed been reworked for a “general audience”; it maintains the form, function, and readability of an academic thesis, not something one would generally pick up at a bookstore if interested in the arts and spiritual formation. However, not having read the actual dissertation, I am unable to compare and contrast notable differences and distinctions that may prove beneficial in determining which may be the most helpful for the intended theologian reader: the dissertation or //Sense and Spirituality//. For what it’s worth, given the brevity and lack of depth in “Part II: Practical Application,” it is my assumption that the dissertation would be the better route.Part I: Theoretical FrameworkMcCullough simplifies “//aesthesis// and //ascesis//” into “//sense// and //spirituality//,” stating that his agenda is “to explore how skills in sensory perception with those related to ascetical development or spiritual formation, and how this dialectical relationship can be mediated, enhanced, or //catalyzed// through encounters with the arts” (9). The thesis is belabored and restated a number of times (academic filler material), but this is an important discussion to be had. How does art catalyze sense and spirituality “aimed toward progressive spiritual growth” (45)? McCullough takes roughly fifty pages to get to the point of trying to define art (craft, content, and context [Figure 03, p. 43]) and stating—in my own oversimplification—something that is quite well-known: the more one understands art, the more one may appreciate art, as well as the more one may gain from art. In this context, the gain intended is spiritual growth.Part II: Practical ApplicationMcCullough provides three examples in an attempt to demonstrate a practical application of his thesis: poetry (//Four Quartets//, T. S, Eliot), painting (//The Four Holy Gospels//, Makoto Fujimura), and music (//Seven Last Words from the Cross//, James MacMillan). Each of these is briefly discussed according to its craft, content, and context. The author writes, “I do not wish to write full-blown commentaries on these works, but something more akin to liner notes for a record album” (62), which is a shame because they do not, in my opinion, provide adequate commentary to qualify as examples of practical application of the original thesis (the chapter on Eliot provides only a hint of spirituality and does not appear to connect the reader with enough evidence to support its inclusion, though the subject matter itself certainly would if given greater attention; Fujimura’s is the most connected of the three, providing decent commentary on the purpose, method, and meaning behind the project, though the black and white images in a paperback do not help the reader; and MacMillan’s is, I believe, a poor example to use because of the tradition within which the music is composed, already easily recognized as “sacred” music intended for spiritual growth, meaning that the example appears to be stating the obvious). His conclusion, with which I concur: “Art is an irreducible amalgam of //what// is said and //how// it is said, to the point that they are inseparable” (101, emphasis original).Part III: ConclusionThis “Part” is only five pages, restating and concluding in the tradition of this type of writing.Truthfully, there’s some helpful material here despite its redundancy and what has already been noted concerning its practical application; however, much more work needs to be done in order to make it more accessible for a general audience. I’m now more interested in what the dissertation may have to offer.

By Tangled Skein Excellently written, with easy-to-understand instructions and illustrations. Contains information on everything from making specific shapes and patterns to converting old T-shirts into rug strips. She also includes the information necessary to make baskets and even tote bags and hats using this method.Ms. Gray is not only a master rugmaker, but an excellent writer and teacher.

For the price, who can complain. But you should "look inside," the sample pages, as I wish I had, to see that this is printed on 8 /12 X 11 inch paper with its bitty font size and 5/8th inch margins. I was going to say 4 stars for that reason, but upgraded to 5 because I do love it, and the book itself is so important today as capitalism is in crisis and facing worse to come, that the cheaper, on-demand printing price makes access easier to a wider audience. It's a little tougher for quick reading as the lines are so long, but then again, this is not a book to be sped thru. It is rich with important, avant garde analysis of the impact of industrialization on the capitalist economic system, and the clear articulation of equality, the solution for all the problems caused by the system itself. ANYONE interested in the "end of capitalism" or "post-capitalist" economics, as really everyone should be these days, will find a more insightful examination than in many (most?) contemporary studies. Like Bellamy's preceding book, LOOKING BACKWARD, of which this is a "sequel," EQUALITY is definitely ahead of his time in thinking if not in writing style. Style is the expressive, English essay style of the 19th century. I put "sequel" in quotations because LOOKING BACKWARD is definitely a novel, whereas EQUALITY is a novel in semblance only; it reads more like essays with the pretense of plot and dialog. But DON'T let that stop you. Just read it as an eloquent essay that covers every significant problem of capitalism and the practical, necessary alternative WITHOUT the Marxist style "socialism." It is an experimental (evolutionary plan of testing what works, and why) proposal he calls Nationalism, covering in greater detail topics covered more briefly in LOOKING BACKWARD.

Definitely making me a stronger writer By Miss A Ross I love the way the book's structured (you're given a writing prompt a day, and the prompts sort of build on each other till you're writing at Truman Capote levels of genius... or just doing your best work. Both are good).The references and writing samples come from all kinds of writers with all sorts of styles, from Krakauer to Hemingway, and there's tons of interesting thoughts here - for example, I've never really given the concept of cognitive bias much thought, to be honest, but I've no doubt it's affected my writing, as well as my life choices, more than I realise.I've been writing, observing, questioning, interacting a ton more since starting this book. More to the point, I've honestly been enjoying doing those things way more since digging into the prompts. This is right up there with Anne Lamott and Stephen King's guides to writing (and life).

I am eager to start the writing challenges and I can tell that they will help deepen my writing. Most books with writing prompts only give ideas of things to write about, but the prompts in this book seem like they will actually transform me as a writer. David Miller really did a great job with this and I will absolutely recommend this to my writer friends.

It lays out proven storytelling techniques, and urges the reader to complete writing exercises based on these techniques. This is basically how online university writing courses are taught, except you don't get the peer and professor feedback. Obviously, the book isn't meant to be a substitute for an actual course, but if you're considering taking college courses, you could try completing this book first. For writers who are further along, this book is a good refresher.Reading through this book (as of yet, I have not completed the writing assignments as the author intended) I get a strong sense that Miller's ultimate goal is for the aspiring writer to not just 'get better at writing,' but to develop a better sense of taste. To overcome the disease of cliched and commodified language (such as that used in commercials and travel brochures) by becoming more aware of it.I say this book will be a refresher for some because the building blocks are covered (5 W's of journalism, narration, etc) but Miller lays out some advanced techniques as well. He gives examples of how to describe (people) for emotional effect, rather than merely physical. How to use linear/nonlinear narrative techniques to create questions/build suspense in the reader's mind. Again, very useful and not always at the front of the writer's mind.Finally, I should mention that the author emailed to notify me that there was a 2-day window in which I could get this book for free. But I was unable to download the book in those 2 days as I was traveling. I wound up buying the book at full price ($7) and I am not disappointed. The ideas in this book and the consideration given to its layout are, I feel, worth more than what I paid. I think it will add value to my life as a writer. For this reason, I gave the book five stars.
