This is more than just a pasting of the Python sections of the previous edition into a separate book. This edition is more beginner-friendly because more effort is expended on explaining the setup and configuration of App Engine. Furthermore, the previous topics have been updated with the latest features of App Engine and expanded with clearer explanation of the concepts. The expanded coverage about the Datastore is alone, worth this purchase, and underscores the difference in depth between a book and online documentation. This edition presents the most comprehensive coverage of App Engine for Python and the author's growth in authorship is apparent from edition to edition. Four thumbs up.

Georg Philipp Telemann gave us one of the richest legacies of instrumental music from the eighteenth century. Though considered a definitive contribution to the genre during his lifetime, his concertos, sonatas, and suites were then virtually ignored for nearly two centuries following his death. Yet these works are now among the most popular in the baroque repertory. In Music for a Mixed Taste, Steven Zohn considers Telemann's music from stylistic, generic, and cultural perspectives. He investigates the composer's cosmopolitan "mixed taste"--a blending of the French, Italian, English, and Polish national styles-and his imaginative expansion of this concept to embrace mixtures of the old (late baroque) and new (galant) styles. Telemann had an equally remarkable penchant for generic amalgamation, exemplified by his pioneering role in developing hybrid types such as the sonata in concerto style ("Sonate auf Concertenart") and overture-suite with solo instrument ("Concert en ouverture"). Zohn examines the extramusical meanings of Telemann's "characteristic" overture-suites, which bear descriptive texts associating them with literature, medicine, politics, religion, and the natural world, and which acted as vehicles for the composer's keen sense of musical humor. Zohn then explores Telemann's unprecedented self-publishing enterprise at Hamburg, and sheds light on the previously unrecognized borrowing by J.S. Bach from a Telemann concerto. Music for a Mixed Taste further reveals how Telemann's style polonaise generates musical and social meanings through the timeless oppositions of Orient-Occident, urban-rural, and serious-comic.

Music for a Mixed Taste: Style, Genre, and Meaning in Telemann's Instrumental Works, by Steven Zohn

Review "If any music-lovers, performers, or scholars still doubt the beauty and richness of Telemann's music or the importance of his industrious life for the course of music history, let them now read this new study by Steven Zohn, which is extraordinarily well researched, meticulously argued, and original in both content and approach. In one bound, Zohn sets new standards not only for literature in English on Telemann, but also for Telemann scholarship worldwide."--Michael Talbot, Emeritus Professor of Music, University of Liverpool

"Steven Zohn's excellent and engaging study should put to rest, once and for all, any view that Telemann was a habitual composer of wallpaper music. Zohn gives us a comprehensive, nuanced, and discerning picture of the Telemann whose music Bach and Handel so greatly admired."--Michael Marissen, Professor of Music, Swarthmore College, and author of The Social and Religious Designs of Bach's Brandenburg Concertos

"Zohn takes Telemann well beyond Bach's shadow, revealing not only Telemann's original voice and uncanny fluency in any number of national styles, but also transforming our basic conceptions about music in eighteenth-century Germany. An invaluable contribution."-- Wendy Heller, Professor of Music, Princeton University

About the Author Steven Zohn is Laura H. Carnell Professor of Music Studies at Temple University. The recipient of grants and awards from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the American Philosophical Society, the American Musicological Society, and the German Academic Exchange Service, he has published widely on the music of the German late baroque. He is also a noted performer on historical flutes.

10 of 10 people found the following review helpful. A Musical Challenge By Stuart Schulz This dense but lively treatment of Telemann's instrumental music fills a real void. While many musicians of his era have entire shelves devoted to their work, the Telemann section in my college library contains exactly three books about Telemann's life and music, most of which are superficial. But this book does not skim across his oeuvre; instead, it spends 500 pages analyzing the forms and precursors of his prolific output, with many examples and excerpts. Yet a warning must be issued up front--this is not for the casual reader or even a serious amateur. The prose is thick with technical musical form analysis and terminology, including numerous French, German, and Italian terms that remain untranslated, and might even challenge a music major. And in a book with almost 200 pages of notes and bibliography at the end, the most needed end section of all for the interested layman, a Glossary, is almost laughably inadequate. There are often more obscure terms on ONE page of the text than can be found in the entire glossary. And yet, in spite of these caveats, there are clearly interesting and tantalizing insights lurking just behind this veil of technical jargon, and a sense of a very good writer in complete control of his subject. As an amateur musician who loves and often plays Telemann, I intend to struggle through the entire book or die trying. While it is hard for any writer to please all audiences, I just wish the author had kept the many intelligent amateurs like myself in mind when he wrote this, instead of a small circle of academic experts.

Graphic Design for Architects is a handbook of techniques, explanations and examples of graphic design most relevant to architects. The book covers a variety of scales of graphic design, everything from portfolio design and competition boards, to signage and building super-graphics – to address every phase of architectural production.

This book combines and expands on information typically found in graphic design, information design, and architectural graphics books. As architectural communication increases to include more territory and components of a project, it is important for designers to be knowledgeable about the various ways in which to communicate visually. For instance, signage should be designed as part of the process – not something added at the end of a project; and the portfolio is a manifestation of how the designer works, not just an application to sell a design sensibility. In thinking about architecture as a systematic and visual project, the graphic design techniques outlined in this book will help architects process, organize and structure their work through the lens of visual communication.

Each chapter is titled and organized by common architectural modes of communication and production. The chapters speak to architects by directly addressing projects and topics relevant to their work, while the information inside each chapter presents graphic design methods to achieve the architects’ work. In this way, readers don’t have to search through graphic design books to figure out what’s relevant to them – this book provides a complete reference of graphic techniques and methods most useful to architects in getting their work done.

Graphic Design for Architects: A Manual for Visual Communication, by Karen Lewis

Review

‘By clearly demonstrating, both as an example itself as well as through explaining its procedures, the numerous formats and techniques within architecture's extended field of production and reproduction (Portfolios, RFQs, Proposal Books – the extensive combinations of images, texts, diagrams, and spreadsheets that are, in total, and in various permutations, the architect's mode d'emploi) Graphic Design for Architects is not only a useful subject, but also a required skill, and now a necessary volume for any architect’s studio bookshelf.’ - John McMorrough, Associate Professor, Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning, University of Michigan, USA

'Graphic Design for Architects - A Manual for Visual Communication is a comprehensive overview that is compelling for both written content and the wide-ranging use of graphic examples in the book. The combination of interviews together with numerous contributors adds a wealth of experience and knowledge into this work. I'm fairly certain that most readers will learn something from this book as it is filled with examples and alternative approaches. For the non-architect, this book will reveal some the architectural secret-sauce that is commonly seen on project sights - thereby helping the reader to appreciate what the architect was trying to do with his presentation.' - Jeff Thurston, 3D Visualization World Magazine

As a city planning professor and a practicing city planner, I've been waiting for this book. My planning students are expected to demonstrate a working knowledge in executing graphic design for presentations, posters, resumes, portfolios, maps, information graphics, books/plans, and many other products. Most of my students don't have confidence in their graphics skills because it is very hard to teach students how to be good designers. A quick page through Lewis' book, students "get it" and are eager to understand the art and science behind her intelligently crafted lessons. This book is now required reading for every student in the city planning program. I am certain that the quality of our students' graphic communications skills will rise as a result. Although this book's title suggests that it is for architects, city planners, landscape architects, and other similar fields of study will greatly benefit from the books lessons. Even MBA students with great business ideas could learn how to 'wow' their cohorts in presentations and with their final products. In fact, professionals in any field can learn how to become more convincing by using graphics in a smart way. This gorgeous work is already one of my favorite reference books and I predict it will become an important resource inside and outside of classroom. I'll bet that you will love it, too.

In an increasingly competitive world market, how does the United States rank? Many Americans are worried about the economic state of their nation, especially now that countries like China are becoming ever more economically powerful. What does America need to both stabilize and energize its economy? Entrepreneurship, Steve Mariotti claims, is key. An Entrepreneur’s Manifesto is Mariotti’s rallying cry for the world to recognize the potential that business creation holds, not only for the individual but for the economy as well. Mariotti explores the ways entrepreneurship affects schools and prisons, developed cities and isolated villages, brick and mortar stores and internet-based business. He takes a hard look at the research done to date on entrepreneurial education, entrepreneurship and government policy, and the social and cultural attributes most likely to foster successful business creation, incorporating his discussions with some of the best minds on the question of entrepreneurship. Mariotti also examines how the rise of the Internet and Web-based innovations like crowdfunding have both changed—and not changed—the fundamentals of promoting those who take the ultimate gamble of going into business for themselves. As author of several leading text books on the subject and founder of the Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship (NFTE), a global nonprofit organization that has educated more than 500,000 students and trained more than 5,000 teachers in 50 countries, Mariotti is both an experienced and reliable leader in what he calls the entrepreneurial revolution. Mariotti writes frequently for the Huffington Post, and has been recruited by the State Department to discuss his ideas on youth entrepreneurship in Cambodia and other developing countries seeking to escape the shackles of centrally planned economic policies. Neither a dry recitation of academic theory nor a scattered collection of feel-good stories, An Entrepreneur’s Manifesto builds on Mariotti’s unique perspective to offer a critique that is both inspiring and practical. Riveting stories are complimented with enlightening real-world perspective, making the work relatable and inspiring.   “There is no more revolutionary act,” Mariotti says, “than starting a business.”

An Entrepreneur’s Manifesto, by Steve Mariotti

Review “Written in an accessible, smoothly flowing style, The Entrepreneur’s Manifesto is a vitally important book to read and share if we are to change the ever-widening gap between the one percent and the rest of us.” —Mirah Riben, The Huffington Post “An Entrepreneur’s Manifesto beautifully illustrates the mandate to nourish and develop an entrepreneurial mindset for a new entrepreneurial generation, empowering individuals by tapping into their passion.” —Diana Davis Spencer, chairman and president of the Diana Davis Spencer Foundation “In the next few decades, billions of young people will enter the global workforce. There are not jobs waiting for most of them, especially those who are low-income. I believe that entrepreneurship education is the best solution, and this book explains why!”  —Michael Simmons, cofounder of Empact, Forbes columnist, and author of The Student Success Manifesto: How to Create a Life of Passion, Purpose, and Prosperity “One walks away from this book with a sense of urgency to ensure that entrepreneurial education becomes a mainstay in the halls of all schools and places of education.” —Rabbi Yehoshua Werde, director of Crown Heights Young Entrepreneurs“Through story, experience, and data, Mariotti makes it clear that entrepreneurship is the way to both reinvigorate our economy and redirect men and women away from legacies of incarceration and desperation and towards a promising, self-created career.” —Catherine Hoke, founder and CEO of Defy Ventures “With An Entrepreneur’s Manifesto, Steve Mariotti further enhances his reputation as a change agent. This powerful book can transform thinking, lives, and entire communities.” —Sheila Rule, cofounder of the Think Outside the Cell Foundation; former senior editor, New York Times “Entrepreneurship is the only real way for people to get out of poverty. The prestige of a successful business builds incredible self-respect that also has many benefits to society as a whole.  Even business initiatives that are not successful still bring solid life experiences and serve as a base for subsequent efforts. Steve Mariotti’s latest book brings it all together.  I highly recommend everyone read the book and join the ‘revolution.’” —Gary Voight, CEO of CorasWorks “The light of entrepreneurship is a guide to freedom and hope for young people from all corners of the earth, from all walks of life. An Entrepreneur’s Manifesto is the twenty-first century economic blueprint we’ve been waiting for.” —Joseph Robinson, author of Think Outside the Cell: An Entrepreneur’s Guide for the Incarcerated and Formerly Incarcerated “An Entrepreneur’s Manifesto is destined to be a classic for my generation. Steve Mariotti has not only had a huge impact in causing entrepreneurship education to be taken seriously but he has inspired countless individuals, including myself, toward making an impact in that field. The significance of the insights he shares in this book cannot be overstated.” —Sheena Lindhal, CEO and cofounder of Empact

“What is the larger purpose, not just for your business, but for you as a business person? In the case of Mariotti, his business, Network For Teaching Entrepreneurship (NFTE) is promoting business opportunity for all, especially at-risk youth who might otherwise not have considered entrepreneurship. When you read Mariotti’s excitement about entrepreneurship and the importance of entrepreneurial access for everyone you can’t help but look more expansively about what role you can play to make as much of a difference.” —Caroline Ceniza-Levine, Forbes

From the Author

I wrote An Entrepreneur’s Manifesto because I believe entrepreneurship education and policies that encourage entrepreneurship are the most practical ways to address the ills plaguing the world today, from dangerously high levels of youth unemployment to terrorism and the wealth gap. I hope to inspire an Entrepreneurship Revolution that will transform the global economy and usher in a new surge in peace, prosperity, democracy and freedom worldwide.

Since founding the Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship (NFTE) in 1987 to bring entrepreneurship education to at-risk youth I have seen extraordinary transformations among young people exposed to entrepreneurship. At the time, I was a failing special-education teacher unable to reach or teach the rowdy students in my Bed-Stuy high school. One especially rough day, I stepped out of the classroom to try to compose myself. In a desperate move, I took off my watch and marched back in with an impromptu sales pitch for it. To my astonishment, my students were riveted and stayed with me through a lesson on sales, wholesale and retail costs, and return on investment.

I had stumbled onto the truth: these kids were far more frustrated than I was. They felt so disconnected from our economic system that they saw no futures for themselves and no reason to pay attention in school. When I taught them how to start and run simple small businesses, they quickly grasped the connection between learning and earning money. They became excited to read, write, do math, and behave better.

Today, NFTE has over 600,000 graduates of our entrepreneurship education programs from Chicago to China--and so many wonderful success stories. I strongly believe that any increase in business literacy will fight poverty, and help inoculate the world against terrorism and anti-capitalist totalitarianism, which we have seen develop when poor people become as frustrated as my inner-city students were--before they learned that they could not only survive but thrive in the free market.

The most political act a person can ever do is to create a business. To become an entrepreneur has the power to revolutionize lives, rescue families, and forever change communities and countries. I hope you’ll enjoy An Entrepreneur’s Manifesto, and join the Entrepreneurship Revolution!   www.stevemariotti.com

I loved learning about attitudes toward entrepreneurship in different countries around the world and the many interviews with and stories about how people are using small business to battle hunger and violence ranging from building a homegrown seed industry in Africa to helping our own urban youth harness their amazing ideas and energy and blast out of the ghetto. Mariotti provides context by also including interviews with economists, stories of his own sometimes-hilarious experiences with thinkers as diverse as Friedrich Hayek, Milton Friedman and Ayn Rand, and a historic sense of the terrible things that have happened from Cambodia to the Soviet Union, when entrepreneurs are persecuted and oppressed. Fascinating!

By Doug Miles America was built on the spirit and work ethic of entrepreneurship. Steve Mariotti, the founder of NFTE, the Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship, clearly outlines the need for teaching entrepreneurial skills in the classroom in his book “An Entrepreneur’s Manifesto”. He’s been a teacher in the New York City school system for more than 30 years and has successfully taught the skills for running a business and fostering the “entrepreneurial mindset”. The book is an outstanding guide for anyone to follow who is contemplating starting a business. Highly recommended. I spoke with Steve Mariotti about his book. That conversation can be heard here: http://dougmilesmedia.com/?p=1531

Once upon a time there was a little kitten called Kit who lived with a grown-up cat called Kizz Cat. Kit Kitten couldn't understand why sometimes Kizz Cat seemed sad and far away and others times was busy and rushing about. Kit Kitten was sometimes cold and confused in this topsy-turvy world and needed help to find ways to tell others about the big, medium and small feelings which were stuck inside.

Luckily for Kit, Kindly Cat came along.

Many children live in homes where things are chaotic and parents or carers are distracted and emotionally unavailable to them. This storybook, designed for children aged 2 to 6, includes feelings based activities to build a child's emotional awareness and vocabulary. A helpful tool for use by parents, carers, social workers and other professionals to enable young children to begin to name and talk about their feelings.

Review An absorbing, therapeutic and beautifully written way into our children's hearts and minds. I am going to be busy recommending this book to all professionals who work with children who have/are experiencing trauma. Many congratulations Jane. -- Hope Daniels, Care Leaver Adviser, Trainer and Co-Author of Hackney Child Kit Kitten and the Topsy-Turvy Feelings is a charming and approachable book which helps young children who have experienced insecurity, to begin to name and explore feelings. It is also a gentle reminder to those supporting and caring for children that we must give children our time, really listen to what they are telling us and not rush to name feelings for them. I would have liked it more if examples or real life scenarios were presented. The most important tip is the use of mind mapping tools. Also, the author states, "do not move your eyes too much". I learned this tip first in the yoga class. My instructor told me to focus my eyes on a point. If your eyes move, the mind moves. If the mind moves, you cannot focus. Small but, very useful learning tips are given in this book.

The Evolution of Theology: An Anthropological Study, by Thomas H. Huxley

About the Author Thomas Henry Huxley PC FRS (4 May 1825 – 29 June 1895) was an English biologist (comparative anatomist), known as "Darwin's Bulldog" for his advocacy of Charles Darwin's theory of evolution. Huxley's famous 1860 debate with Samuel Wilberforce was a key moment in the wider acceptance of evolution, and in his own career. Huxley had been planning to leave Oxford on the previous day, but, after an encounter with Robert Chambers, the author of Vestiges, he changed his mind and decided to join the debate. Wilberforce was coached by Richard Owen, against whom Huxley also debated whether humans were closely related to apes. Huxley was slow to accept some of Darwin's ideas, such as gradualism, and was undecided about natural selection, but despite this he was wholehearted in his public support of Darwin. He was instrumental in developing scientific education in Britain, and fought against the more extreme versions of religious tradition. In 1869 Huxley coined the term 'agnostic' to describe his own views on theology, a term whose use has continued to the present day (see Thomas Henry Huxley and agnosticism). Huxley had little formal schooling and taught himself almost everything he knew. He became perhaps the finest comparative anatomist of the latter 19th century. He worked on invertebrates, clarifying relationships between groups previously little understood. Later, he worked on vertebrates, especially on the relationship between apes and humans. After comparing Archaeopteryx with Compsognathus, he concluded that birds evolved from small carnivorous dinosaurs, a theory widely accepted today. The tendency has been for this fine anatomical work to be overshadowed by his energetic and controversial activity in favor of evolution, and by his extensive public work on scientific education, both of which had significant effects on society in Britain and elsewhere.

13 of 16 people found the following review helpful. Check which edition you are buying.... By Piers J. Hale Thomas Henry Huxley, _Evolution of Theology: An Anthropological Study_, Hard Press, no date. paperback, pp.41.While it is good that the works of Thomas Huxley should remain in print, the presentation of the recent Hard Press edition (no date), leaves a lot to be desired. This edition provides no details about the original date of publication [1886], nor indeed, any introductory or biographical information on Huxley, on his career, or the importance of this essay in the context of his biological, philosophpical and political writings. Rather, the first words of the book are Huxley's own. This might perhaps be all well and good to the general reader, but in addition to this, and arguably more troubling, is the fact that the text has clearly not been adequatley proof read. There are passages where html commands are present in the text, and instead of the Greek passages and words of the original, the editor has chosen just to insert the word "Greek". To make matters worse, the footnote references do not tally with the note numbering in the text.Huxley was an eminent scholar, and this essay is important in considering his naturalistic views on theology, but this particular edition does little service. Indeed, one would be better served consulting the Huxley website, where a more accurate and informative version could be garnered. In short, the Hard Press edition needs to go back to the editor's office for what are, in all honesty, elementary revisions before being re-presented to the book-buying public.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Mind blowing By Pax Romana "From my present point of view, theology is regarded as a natural product of the operations of the human mind, under the conditions of its existence, just as any other branch of science, or the arts of architecture, or music, or painting are such products. Like them, theology has a history. Like them also, it is to be met with in certain simple and rudimentary forms; and these can be connected by a multitude of gradations, which exist or have existed, among people of various ages and races, with the most highly developed theologies of past and present times."PROs:* Extreme attention to detail* Very dedicated to truthfulness and accuracy* Very unbiased* Clearly explains how theology evolves independent of culture and geography* Huxley uses personal anecdotes and quotes authorities in their respective fields* Contains lots of information* Opens you up to new ways of thinkingCONs:* Almost exclusively talks about Western theology* A bit dry at times, especially in the beginning* Can be very difficult to grasp at points* Huxley could be a little more skeptical"It must be remembered that the literature of the old Israelites, as it lies before us, has been subjected to the revisal of strictly monotheistic editors, violently opposed to all kinds of idolatry, who are not likely to have selected from the materials at their disposal any obvious evidence, either of the practice under discussion, or of that ancestor-worship which is so closely related to it, for preservation in the permanent records of their people."Let me start off by saying that this is quite possibly the best book I've ever read. I certainly didn't think it would be when I started it, as the first few pages are quite complex and boring. Once you get what Huxley is trying to convey and are used to his writing style, the book becomes exponentially better.I am shocked that this book is practically unknown; to me, it is a classic. As the title suggests, Huxley brilliantly charts out the evolution of theology. He goes into extreme detail on the topic of what the ancient Israelites believe - in fact, he gives multiple translations of words from Hebrew to English in the Bible from the top translators of his day in order to convey the most accuracy possible. Huxley shows that all primitive theologies, including that of the Israelites, don't necessarily believe in gods, but have a foundation in the belief in ghosts (that the 'essence' of humans survives the death of the body). Belief in gods is simply a manifestation of this more fundamental belief in ghosts. How developed this theology is depends on the civilization - some simply believe in ghosts, others believe they can be communicated with via divination or witchcraft, and even more sophisticated, such as that of the Jews, derived their ethics from this theology. Example:"And those who will carefully study the so-called "Mosaic code" contained in the books of Exodus, Leviticus, and Numbers, will see that, though Jahveh's prohibitions of certain forms of immorality are strict and sweeping, his wrath is quite as strongly kindled against infractions of ritual ordinances. Accidental homicide may go unpunished, and reparation may be made for wilful theft. On the other hand, Nadab and Abihu, who "offered strange fire before Jahveh, which he had not commanded them," were swiftly devoured by Jahveh's fire; he who sacrificed anywhere except at the allotted place was to be "cut off from his people"; so was he who ate blood; and the details of the upholstery of the Tabernacle, of the millinery of the priests' vestments, and of the cabinet work of the ark, can plead direct authority from Jahveh, no less than moral commands."Huxley also shows the intermingling of different theologies among the Semitic peoples and the Egyptians, and how the Egyptian code of ethics, mostly found in their 'Book of the Dead' is similar yet superior to its Biblical counterpart. He then compares cultures that have had absolutely no prior contact to Western civilization, such as the Polynesians, with the theology of the ancient Jews, showing that again, they are nearly identical. Huxley concludes that the pinnacle of theology was reached by the Israelite prophets, such as Ezra, in and around the 4th and 5th centuries BCE.Most amazingly, Huxley demonstrates that Christian theology, the combination of Greek philosophy and Jewish scripture (brought on by Philo of Alexandria), with its vague, esoteric, and allegorical interpretations, has sent theology spiralling into a regression. A new form of paganism, with the worship of the Virgin Mary and Saints, has been ushered in; idolatry is more popular than ever with pictures of crosses and crucifixes - in fact, Huxley says that if Jesus could see Christianity, he would conclude that it is a blasphemous religion, and etc.Huxley explains how theology evolved due to internal struggle and criticism, but lately, it is coming under fire from the outside due to secular forces, such as science. Eventually these forces will push theology back to its origins, completely divorced from ethics. This is truly mind blowing stuff and I can't recommend it enough."With the growth of civilisation in Europe, and with the revival of letters and of science in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, the ethical and intellectual criticism of theology once more recommenced, and arrived at a temporary resting-place in the confessions of the various reformed Protestant sects in the sixteenth century; almost all of which, as soon as they were strong enough, began to persecute those who carried criticism beyond their own limit. But the movement was not arrested by these ecclesiastical barriers, as their constructors fondly imagined it would be; it was continued, tacitly or openly, by Galileo, by Hobbes, by Descartes, and especially by Spinoza, in the seventeenth century; by the English Freethinkers, by Rousseau, by the French Encyclopaedists, and by the German Rationalists, among whom Lessing stands out a head and shoulders taller than the rest, throughout the eighteenth century; by the historians, the philologers, the Biblical critics, the geologists, and the biologists in the nineteenth century, until it is obvious to all who can see that the moral sense and the really scientific method of seeking for truth are once more predominating over false science. Once more ethics and theology are parting company."
