By Jackie Cooper This fun imaginative coloring book is filled with 42 whimsical illustrations of both real and imaginary cities from around the globe, under the sea, and high in the clouds.With every illustration covering two pages this is a wonderful book to spend quality time actually coloring the same picture with your children. My grandchildren love two page illustrations that two of them can color together or color with me.1. This square (9 ¾ x9 3/4inch) book has 84 pages to color, front and back or each page, printed on heavy weight , bright white paper.2. Each of the 42 illustrations cover two pages.3. Each illustration includes traveling companions’ to locate as you color, they include, dolphins, swans, bees, seahorses, geese, birds and more.4. This book is great for colored pencils, crayons, and the following coloring mediums DID NOT leak through the pages in my test (Fiskars Gel Pens, Irma Gel Pens, Staedtler Triplus Fibre tip pens, and Staedtler Triplus Fine liners,)5. These markers leak through the pages and will ruin the illustration on the back of the page you are coloring so actually would ruin 2 illustrations because they are all 2 pages. (Bic mark it (fine and ultra Fine), Sharpie (Ultra fine and fine), Pentel color pen Fine point color markers, Stabilo fineliner 30 point 88 (these leaked through the least of the markers that leaked through the pages with spotty leakage in heavily colored areas, but I wouldn’t trust them)6. The details vary within each illustration from small to medium.Illustrations include: :, the jungle, circus tents, sky scrapers, forest, Montreal, seaside cities, Amsterdam, Medieval city, adobe village, enchanted world, Bombay, Moscow and more.

By aminah t muhammad Prior to receiving the book, I assumed it would be something I could get through in one day; I was completely wrong. Each page has such wonderful, extremely detailed pictures, making it a very enjoyable and lasting experience. It has brought out a more creative side as well when it comes to using the colors to bring each city to life. Once I get started, it is truly calming. I get into a "coloring zone" and I am able to block or momentarily forget any possible discomforts. I even let my daughter coloring the wider spaces. I recommend this book for leisure, as a stress reliever, or a travel activity. I never knew coloring could be so relaxing and fun for adults!!!(An older or very skilled child would also enjoy. As a past teacher, I observed that children who had trouble focusing or behavioral issues always enjoyed the freedom of art.)I just went back to design my inside cover; I don't want to give away the amazing pictures inside the book. You have to buy it and see for yourself.

50 of 53 people found the following review helpful. bad layout - drawings disappear into the seam. By Amazon Customer Since each of the 42 illustrations cover two pages, the center of the drawing in uncolorable. Check out some of the images people have posted. Without a margin by the seam, the pictures are tucked into the seam. Very bad design.

28 of 28 people found the following review helpful. This is a Book of Pure Wisdom and Intrigue. By A Customer I have just finished this book and I do think it is my favorite one by this author. Be prepared, because it is some 800 pages long, but you are never disappointed either with the story line or the author's spiritual asides which read almost like a devotional. The main thrust of the story is about a young tutor named Donal Grant who leaves home after finishing college and sets out on foot to make his way in the world to a nearby coastal town in Northeastern Scotland. He meets a shoemaker who becomes his spiritual mentor, and finds employment and lodging in the nearby castle. As the story progresses we meet a reclusive, drug addicted uncle, his beautiful but spiritually dull niece, and his spoiled and brash son who is up to all kinds of naughty flirting with the shoemaker's daughter.The most appealing part of this novel is the element of the supernatural which Mr. MacDonald brings in. There are ghost noises, somnabulisms, secret rooms and passages, murder, scandal, and ghost stories and legends. Ghosts to George MacDonald represent part of the vast region of the Spirit which exists beside and beyond our own, and he never posits their accual existence. They are never a source of evil power or fear because all things exist by the power and will of God.Get this book, it is well worth the very low price. There are parts (perhaps 15%) which are written in Scotch dialect, but it makes the book that much more interesting that you have to use your brain a little to recognize what is being said.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. By Jeffrey W. Smith Of George MacDonald's Scottish novels, Donal Grant is my favorite. The title character reminds me much of Curdie in MacDonald's fantasy novel, The Princess and Curdie (Princess and Curdie (George Macdonald Original Works)), which I highly recommend as well. For those having read Sir Gibbie (Sir Gibbie (George Macdonald Original Works) (George Macdonald Original Works)), Donal Grant is somewhat of a sequel; it is Grant's story, not Gibbie's, and may be enjoyed without having first read Sir Gibbie. In addition, for those who enjoy a bit of Victorian gothic literature, Donal Grant may be a good read since the setting takes place within a castle containing several, rather dark, secrets. Elements of the traditional ghost story are offered as well.Concerning the product itself, the Johannesen edition of Donal Grant would be the best copy to buy. Not only is it bound in a sturdy, green hard-back cover, but it's pages are acid-free and durable, not grainy. The font size, though a little small, is dark enough and easy to read. As well, like all of the editions printed through Johannesen, the book's title is printed in heavy gold letters on the front and spine. It is a truly beautiful book and well worth the money, not to mention that this edition is considered authoritative among literary critics. I hope that this review has been helpful for you - Happy Shopping!

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Probably my favorite. By Christine Theresa Gallagher . . . seems to be my favorite. Has a lot of different sermonettes that appeal to me, and truth that has satisfied me when I was searching for truth hungrily. I remember the last chapter particularly. There are some beautiful pictures in this book--I guess you could call it "mystical". In the "scary" parts, I remember Donal's courage; and I admire Donal's boldness in various situations throughout the book. Donal wasn't afraid to respectfully disagree with others on doctrine. This story is vivid in my mind and I love it!

David Schofield reads this exciting original adventure featuring the 12th Doctor and Clara, as played by Peter Capaldi and Jenna Coleman in the BBC TV series. The Doctor and Clara are called to a mysterious, isolated house on a moonlet in the Asurmian Reach. There they meet the inscrutable Justin Winter and his two assistants, Joey and Carenza. Winter has called for the Doctor’s help: he and his friends are trapped in the house, all exits having long ago been sealed. When even the TARDIS proves unable to dematerialize, the Doctor and Clara quickly realize they are as much prisoners as their new acquaintances. Strange blood moths fly around their heads, and there’s a strange whispering and rustling from the shadows of the house’s interior. As tensions rise, the Doctor struggles to engineer a way out - and a staggering series of revelations are about to be made. David Schofield, who plays Odin in the Doctor Who Season 9 episodes The Girl Who Died and The Woman Who Lived, reads this thrilling original adventure by George Mann, part of the Tales of Winter quartet of stories.

2 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Worthy of a listen but not a repeat By Leria Draven Very poorly done "accent" for the 12th Doctor that proved to be a distraction during the reading. Clara was a bit distracting too. The story line wasn't that great, but still was easy to follow. Would have preferred the actors doing the narration for themselves instead of the reader trying to do it.

She has to, or her current child might pay the price…or the future one Hell wants her to conceive as part of her contract.As I’ve stated in the past, and probably will again in the future, I have an aversion to starting a book in the middle of a series without having read the other ones. I must start at the first one. However, I found the description on this book to be interesting and fun. Besides, if the author does a good job, the reader won’t feel too confused. First the good things: Immediately, I was drawn into the story, felt mostly like I hadn’t missed anything, and had a good grasp of the characters. The book was well-written, entertaining, and fun. It was mostly so engaging I didn’t want to put it down, and was actually surprised when I realized how close I was to the end. Now the bad things (of which there is only a couple): I stated above that I didn’t feel like I had missed much by not having read the first ones. The exception to that was the character Ariel. I still didn’t quite know how she had entered the picture until I read reviews and descriptions of the first book. That had a tendency to throw me out of the book at times. Also, this book did seem a little lacking in a substantial plot. However, these two “bad” things are very inconsequential. This book was exactly what it was supposed to be: a wonderful, fun, quick read. I am going to go out and get the others in the series. I really, really highly recommend everyone who likes these types of books to do the same. This book/series is well worth it!Thanks to NetGalley and Carina UK for the free ebook in exchange for an honest review. This review also posted on Goodreads.

By Middle Aged Guy I'm usually into hard-boiled, James Patterson / Steve Hamilton kind of suspense novels, but I've found the Lilith Straight series - and Straight by the Rules - to be a highly enjoyable change of pace. Lilith is a suburban divorcee with a part-time gig working for the devil (actually, the devil's right-hand woman-cum-hoofed demon, Helen Spry) thanks to an old family curse that forces each generation's firstborn girl-child to work for the netherworld as an seductress. Sadly for Lilith, but hilariously for the reader, she's just not that good at it. Some of it is her natural reluctance - who really wants to spend an evening flat on their back as a living sushi bar? - and some of it is Helen's new secretary, Delilah, (yes, Hell has secretaries, haven't you ever seen Damn Yankees?) who hasn't quite got the temptress scheduling system down yet. All and all, Straight by the Rules is a fine read with a nifty twist at the end that leaves you thinking Helen is going to come to regret that family curse.

The extra star is because I got a messed up copy from Amazon. But I contacted the author and she handled it so quickly. Excellent customer service!

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Totally unsatisfactory By Walter N. My copy is missing multiple chapters. This is not a reflection of the author's work which is consistent with her previous comic efforts, but rather something amiss with her publisher. Too bad.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. mportant call-to-action for organizations of all sizes By Richard L. Seroter Sussna’s “Designing Delivery” is an important call-to-action for organizations of all sizes. Instead of relying on hierarchical, efficiency-oriented I.T. departments inspired by the management philosophy of Frederic Taylor, companies now need I.T. to be adaptable, responsive partners with a focus on customer empathy. Sussna traces the journey from scientific management and top-down complicated systems, to more agile, complex systems that are “sloppy … yet highly resilient.”Sussna introduces the readers to cybernetics and the impact of assuming that our unpredictable world requires continually processing (and responding to) feedback. He intermingles the concept of empathy and contends that projects and organizations struggle when they do not learn and evolve through conversations with customers. Sussna explains the concepts of Continuous Integration, DevOps and microservices to demonstrate a responsive way of thinking.He spends a significant portion of the book focusing on quality and the evolution of traditional QA and testing roles. Sussna sees quality as building the right thing, not just building something right. Modern QA thinking is focused on the customer and the job they are hiring the company to do. Instead of being a segregated group with an adversarial relationship with developers, QA must be a deeply embedded in all aspects of a modern service organization. They are advocates for customers and switch from “quality assurance” to “quality advocacy.” Sussna explains that Promise Theory is a key part of the language of quality, and represents a more realistic framing of collaboration.Sussna continually hammers on the changing role of I.T. and explains the transition from designing for software to designing for service. He introduces a common design language that can be used across your organization, and his easy-to-read style takes complex topics and makes them understandable. Whether you’re a CIO or tester, this book is an invaluable guide for modernizing your I.T. approach.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. I strongly recommend the book By Cosimo Accoto Designing Delivery is a marvelous book and a must read. A unique, distinctive and concrete approach combining and orchestrating different theoretical perspectives in an holistic and coherent viewpoint. From service-dominant logic to the promise theory, the present - and the future of IT (and relevant frameworks: agile, devops, design and system thinking, continuous delivery...) - is envisioned in a clear map of its mutual interconnections. I strongly recommend the book to C-level, executives and managers facing the transformation toward a digital service business and an agile organization.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. He also added a nice balance of real-world stories to theory making it a ... By Joe Dager I was not sure what to expect from Designing Delivery as I browsed through the Table of Contents. Following @jeffsussna on Twitter for several years, I sort of expected a book more geared towards the IT world. I was pleasantly surprised that it embodied more of a Customer-Service-Centered approach that touched upon Jeff’s interpretation of services as related to design. His breadth of knowledge of Cybernetics, Promise Theory, Service Design, SD-Logic, DevOps is extensive based on the simplicity of his explanations of each and ability to integrate between them. He also added a nice balance of real-world stories to theory making it a very informal read.An IT person would be influenced by Jeff’s approach to delivery of services and people outside of IT would gain an understanding of the above mentioned subject matter and the relationship they have with IT or development in general.Michener’s books always left me with a feeling to learn more about a subject. Though, I am not ready to compare him to Michener; Jeff left me with a similar feeling. I wanted to learn more about the subjects he wrote about. It is one of the best compliments; I can give an author.

By Agnieszka To be truly honest I've never thought that this kind of book can be interesting and helpful - but I changed my opinion! I really love it! I've always liked drawing and playing with colour but this book showed me how to develop my skills and use my imagination to create unbelievably superb pictures. I sometimes use them for decoration - if I want my room to be bright and colourful. I agree with the description and recommend it - when I was using markers or gel pens, I needed a scrap of paper behind the page to prevent bleed-through.Thanks to this book I'm also less stressed what (believe me) is really helpful in my busy life. When I joined to the mailing list I got some pictures - they were different but I found that they are as good as those in the book - it was a nice suprise. I attach some photos - you can see how amazing are these drawings inside :)

By Wizziehat I'm actually just starting to work on this coloring book, but I like it already. It's not TOO busy, but it's busy enough, and not complicated, so I can let my brain wander about like I know it will. That's really the whole purpose of it. I have Multiple Sclerosis and after 3 attacks of optic neuritis, I have a vision impairment. The print is nice and clear and it's large. I know I'm going to miss spaces.. I always do, but it's ok. I have room to add some additional doodles to make it a bit different so I can say that part is my own. My husband bought me a supersized clipboard for me to color on. My cat is jealous of my coloring time, but I need it. MS has caused depression and an anxiety disorder. I have joined the other adults coloring, and it is very therapeutic for me. Instead of struggling to read before bed, I color, and I sleep much better. I plan to experiment with different markers, pens, and colored pencils. Gel pens are my favorite, but Prismacolor colored pencils are more vivid. A combination is good. It takes awhile to finish one page, so I definitely get my money's worth. I think coloring books should be available in hospital waiting rooms and other places like that. This is a good stress reduction book and I'm looking forward to coloring tonight. Great job and thanks to the illustrators. This is also my first e-coloring book. It's a bit cheaper and I can reprint a page if I am truly unhappy with it.

There are geometrics, mandalas, paisleys, flowers/plants, waves, abstracts -- no animals, but that's OK with me.The best part is you get a link to a printable .pdf version of the book, so you can print and color the same design multiple times.These are excellent quality designs in a variety of styles. Should provide hours of coloring relaxation and enjoyment.Oct 6, 2015: ETA: I'm posting 3 pictures from the downloaded .pdf to give you an idea of the kinds of designs in this book.

    ONE LAST CHANCE TO SAVE THE WORLD … OR DOOM IT? ‘A whip-cracker…’ - Chicago Tribune

    The 22nd Century. Dr. Charles Forbin is Earth’s most powerful man. As mediator between Colossus, the Super Computer, and the rest of humanity, Forbin holds the key to Earth's fate. When Colossus, an awe-inspiring technological creation suddenly became self-aware and took upon itself the task of righting humanity’s wrongs with no regard for humans themselves, Forbin intervened. He took the decision to turn off his great machine – but could not do it alone. Forbin called upon invaders from Mars. The Martians did their fastidious work, shutting down Colossus. The Earth descended into chaos. Rival factions sparred for supremacy, with only Forbin to control the populace and maintain order. But now, the Martians have returned. And they want compensation. A race so technologically advanced, towering in scope and innovation … What could they possibly want from Earth? Only one thing: its oxygen. The Martians are in need of Earth’s most natural resource, after radiation from the Crab Nebula threatens to eradicate all of their stores. Forbin is asked to design a super Collector in order to solidify the Earth’s supply of oxygen – or, a large proportion of it – to be handed over to the Martians. But to do so would condemn the lives of hundreds of millions of Earth’s inhabitants. There is only one entity on Earth with the power to stop the Martians… Colossus must return. The supercomputer is the only chance Earth has to defend itself… But can Forbin reactivate his creation in time? Or will Colossus, once tyrant, now potential saviour, turn to dust, along with the rest of humankind? COLOSSUS AND THE CRAB is the final instalment of D. F. Jones’ enthralling science fiction COLOSSUS series.

    Praise for D. F. Jones:

    ‘Full marks for this technological horror story. A combination of cybernetics and suspense that adds up to real SF’ – Sunday Citizen ‘A whip-cracker…’ - Chicago Tribune 'It chilled my blood' - The Yorkshire Post 'Horrifying instalment of the man vs. machine competition' - New York Times Dennis Feltham Jones was a British Science Fiction author; he was a Naval Commander in World War II, and lived in Cornwall until his death in 1981. His writings dealt with the ongoing battle – both physical and philosophical – between man and machine. He is perhaps most famous for his Colossus series, which was translated to the big screen in 1970 for the film Colossus: The Forbin Project, which was well received by critics, and was nominated for a Hugo Award in 1971. Jones's "Colossus Trilogy" picks up where the last one left off, with Charles Forbin - the creator of Colossus, the supercomputer that took over the world five years before - and his assistant Edward Blake awaiting the arrival of the Martians who provided them with the means of shutting down the computer. When they appear, they soon reveal that the aid they supplied was to remove the one obstacle to their plan, which is to re-oxygenate Mars by taking half of the Earth's atmosphere. Facing the devastation of the planet and the deaths of millions, Forbin and Blake are forced to undertake a plan that is Earth's only hope of defeating the Martians - the reactivation of Colossus.Having described the computer-run future he created in his last novel, The Fall of Colossus, in this one Jones concentrates on the plot and his antagonists. The Martians he describes are well imagined by the author, and many of the best parts of the novel center around their interaction with Forbin and his efforts to comprehend them. In many ways they are better realized than most of the humans, as some of the secondary characters are little better than ethnic stereotypes. The challenge the aliens pose is also well developed, providing an impending threat that Jones conveys well with effective visualization and pacing. In all it provides for a satisfying end for an occasionally overshadowed, yet enjoyably entertaining series.

Alittle silly-but gives closure to the colossus trilogy By A Customer Book begins slowly, goes through a silly stage but the last eighty pages pull off a fitting end to the Forbin project. Leaves no questions unanswered and speaks highly of the human spirit and will to prevail. Asolid read.

The Conclusion to the Colossus Trilogy By Antinomian There are going to probably be spoilers for the first two novels of the Colossus series here. I'll try to mute them for this novel's review.Colossus and The Crab, published in 1977, is book 3 of the Colossus series and is a nice end to the Colossus trilogy. Many many authors take on hefty subjects in their novels and are just not able to follow through with a satisfying ending. That is not the case with this series.So the Super Computer Overlord entity, Colossus, is brought to um compliance using information from a source/entity that Colossus was not aware of. However there was an ulterior motive to bring about action from this information so Mankind finds itself jumping from the frying pan of Colossus's regime to an even worse fire of another regime that will lead to Mankind's collapse.So now Colossus can become Mankind's savior in combating this new worse threat. Wow! Jones style may not be liked by many, but his concepts are worthy. None of the parties involved are innately awful or cruel for cruelties sake, but have their own needs and vision on how to achieve this. Thus comes the possibility of negotiation if all parties can achieve what they want to achieve. For Mankind it's the avoidance of extinction, for the third entity it's the avoidance of *it's* extinction, and for Colossus it's it's continuing sentience. DF Jones really comes up with an elegant conclusion, and for the dystopian outlook of the previous two novels, one that is surprisingly upbeat.Thus concludes the Colossus trilogy satisfyingly. Some reviewers didn't like the last two books of the series, and that's fine for their opinion. I for one thought they were worthwhile and it was much better for them to have been written than not.

    Including more than 35 step-by-step recipes from the Black Sheep School of Cheesemaking

    Most DIY cheesemaking books are hard to follow, complicated, and confusing, and call for the use of packaged freeze-dried cultures, chemical additives, and expensive cheesemaking equipment. For though bread baking has its sourdough, brewing its lambic ales, and pickling its wild fermentation, standard Western cheesemaking practice today is decidedly unnatural. In The Art of Natural Cheesemaking, David Asher practices and preaches a traditional, but increasingly countercultural, way of making cheese—one that is natural and intuitive, grounded in ecological principles and biological science.

    This book encourages home and small-scale commercial cheesemakers to take a different approach by showing them:

    •    How to source good milk, including raw milk;

    •    How to keep their own bacterial starter cultures and fungal ripening cultures;

    •    How make their own rennet—and how to make good cheese without it;

    •    How to avoid the use of plastic equipment and chemical additives; and

    •    How to use appropriate technologies.

    Introductory chapters explore and explain the basic elements of cheese: milk, cultures, rennet, salt, tools, and the cheese cave. The fourteen chapters that follow each examine a particular class of cheese, from kefir and paneer to washed-rind and alpine styles, offering specific recipes and handling advice. The techniques presented are direct and thorough, fully illustrated with hand-drawn diagrams and triptych photos that show the transformation of cheeses in a comparative and dynamic fashion.

    The Art of Natural Cheesemaking is the first cheesemaking book to take a political stance against Big Dairy and to criticize both standard industrial and artisanal cheesemaking practices. It promotes the use of ethical animal rennet and protests the use of laboratory-grown freeze-dried cultures. It also explores how GMO technology is creeping into our cheese and the steps we can take to stop it.

    This book sounds a clarion call to cheesemakers to adopt more natural, sustainable practices. It may well change the way we look at cheese, and how we make it ourselves.

    Review

    Publishers Weekly-

    "Organic farmer Asher, creator of the Black Sheep School of cheesemaking, packs plenty of information into this complete guide for both novice and experienced cheesemakers. He advocates strictly non-commercial methods in this detailed manifesto, showing aspiring cheese artisans how to craft indigenous cultures, make natural rennet, source quality raw milks, and construct their own caves. The 30 recipes with photos require neither additives nor sterilization and include methods for making chèvre, paneer, feta, yogurt-based cheeses, and aged rinded varieties (alpine, blue, and gouda). Chapters on salt, kefir, and the ecology of cheese are included. Asher’s political message is overt: He feels that regulations against using raw milk stand in the way of “your right to practice a natural and traditional cheese making.” His organic method is a political act in favor of 'cheese sovereignty' and takes a stand against corporate interference. Asher’s “contraband cheese” techniques aim to recover the traditional quality of cheese that has been lost."

    “If you want to know every possible detail about cheesemaking the natural way and on a small scale in your home, The Art of Natural Cheesemaking is the book for you--even if you'd just like to dabble in your kitchen. There are chapters on kefir, yogurt cheeses and paneer for beginners and, for advanced students, detailed instructions on how to make rennet from the fourth stomach of a calf. Everything is beautifully illustrated and carefully explained. This book will entice many to join the ranks of those engaged in the art of transforming milk to delicious end products. As the old saying goes, ‘Blessed are the cheesemakers.’ Many more will become blessed thanks to David Asher's work.”-- Sally Fallon Morell, president, the Weston A. Price Foundation, and cheesemaker, P. A. Bowen Farmstead

    “David Asher’s book is brave and important, teaching us to tend to what matters by helping us understand process before recipes. This book expands the boundaries of sustainability, deepening the power of independent autonomy and local flavor, making our world more delicious.”--Shannon Hayes, author, Radical Homemakers: Reclaiming Domesticity from a Consumer Culture

    “The Art of Natural Cheesemaking is a breakthrough book. The interest among eaters to explore this next stage in do-it-yourself living in the 21st century has finally reached dairy. What’s great about Asher’s book is that it is practical and zeroes in on cheese products one may actually make successfully at home. It is unlikely that DIY cheesemaking will put any cheesemonger or cheese producer out of business. Quite the opposite, in fact: The more we remove the mystery to manufacturing even the simplest of cheeses at home, the more we will come to admire the craftsmanship that dairy farmers and artisanal cheesemakers bring to their work, to make life better and tastier for the rest of us.”-- Richard McCarthy, executive director, Slow Food USA

    About the Author

    David Asher is an organic farmer, goatherd, and farmstead cheesemaker, who lives on the gulf islands of British Columbia.  A guerrilla cheesemaker, Asher explores traditionally cultured, noncorporate methods of cheesemaking. Though mostly self-taught, he picked up his cheese skills from various teachers, including a Brown Swiss cow, named Sundae, on Cortes Island.

    Asher’s Black Sheep School of Cheesemaking offers cheesemaking workshops in partnership with food-sovereignty-minded organizations and communities. His workshops teach a cheesemaking method that is natural, DIY, and well suited to any home kitchen. He has been teaching cheesemaking for over seven years.

    Sandor Ellix Katz is a fermentation revivalist. A self-taught experimentalist who lives in rural Tennessee, his explorations in fermentation developed out of overlapping interests in cooking, nutrition, and gardening. This book, originally published in 2003, along with his The Art of Fermentation (2012) and the hundreds of fermentation workshops he has taught around the world, have helped to catalyze a broad revival of the fermentation arts. Newsweek called Wild Fermentation "the fermenting Bible," and The New York Times calls Sandor “one of the unlikely rock stars of the American food scene.” For more information, check out his website www.wildfermentation.com.

    53 of 55 people found the following review helpful. The Cheesemaking book I've been waiting for. By Daniel Bean I write this review on the day of release, after having read through the book somewhat thoroughly. Obviously, It's hard to write a review on a recipe book without having tried a few recipes from it at least, this being a cheesemaking book and having most of the recipes require months, I hope you'll humor me.I have many cheesemaking books. I've had successes making various cheeses, but I've never gotten serious about the craft. I just may after reading this. The reason? Everything is so APPROACHABLE. David Asher is to cheesemaking as Sandor Katz is to fermentation (a point further made since Mr. Katz wrote the foreword.) He takes something that's been done for ages that's been so sterilized to be unrecognizable, and takes it back to how it's been done for ages. I'm sure many of you who are interested in cheesemaking have looked at recipes for a cheese and thought "how did they get a thermophilic culture, keep it at exactly 82 degrees for 80 minutes over a wooden fire, and keep it in a sterile cheese cave?"Of course they didn't, they had tradition. What we have now is meticulous and repeatable, but I'd argue is a bit soulless. What Mr. Asher is bringing back is the soul. He steps you logically through every step. He even shows you how to HARVEST YOUR OWN RENNET. Think about that for a second. When was the last time you saw a cheesemaking book go into more than a page of info about rennet?I actually happened upon David's (very infrequently updated) blog by happenstance, looking for a recipe for homemade blue cheese. I loved the way he wrote, and the passion he clearly held for cheesemaking. It carried over well in this book. It's an absolute joy, and so approachable. If you're anything like I am, a lot of cheesemaking is a mystery. Why should I get this culture over that one? How did these cultures come about? Why can't I use what's floating around my house? It's all explained here, simple enough for a dummy like me to be excited to try it out. Blue cheese culture? He shows you how to cultivate it on your own. It's amazing. Who'd have thought a moldy piece of sourdough bread was something you didn't want to throw out?I've learned more in this book in one day of owning it than I have reading my (I think 8 now) other cheesemaking books over years. Perhaps they primed me to know what Mr. Asher is talking about a bit better. I've had several "aha" moments though, things I didn't even know I didn't know suddenly making a whole lot of sense. I know I've said it before, but again, the word of the day here is "approachable". It takes away the mystery and puts the power of cheesemaking in your hands. I haven't been so excited about a cookbook in a long time.He discusses and shows how to make pretty much any cheese I can think of. From fresh cheeses such as paneer and mozz, to goat cheeses (chevre) to blue cheeses, to swiss cheeses. Common standbys like cheddar are obviously included as well. He takes you through all the important parts of cheesemaking, from his chapter on why he wrote this book and why natural cheesemaking is something worth pursuing, to milk and how to source it (raw, please!). He talks about all the different cultures and how to...culture them (a real eye opener for me. Honestly, this is worth buying the book for alone, knowing how all this stuff comes about). Tools you need, making a cheese cave, even goes over salt and it's importance over a whole chapter.Guys, if you skipped down to the bottom of this review, I don't blame you. I'm rarely long winded or as verbose as I have been here. I only get that way when I'm excited about something, and I rarely get excited. Get this book. Get it if you love cheese. Get it if you hate factory cheese and want to shove some artisinal gouda up their factory's tailpipe. Get it if you're curious about how cheese USED to be made before you could buy a packet of "thermophilic A". Get it if you want to support a passionate author seemingly reviving the craft singlehandedly. The point is:Buy.This.Book.

By aussie farmer I have been making cheese for a couple of years with raw milk from my goats and my cow share. I am fairly serious about it, I have 4 or so cheese books and various go-to websites that I have relied on. I have experimented with a number of different styles which have come out good enough to have a healthy little barter business with my friends and neighbours. But one thing always bothered me: why did I have to buy this stuff in little frozen packets to make cheese? Why did I have to sterilise everything with bleach solution? 1000 years ago in France, they weren't handing out little packets of moulds and cultures! And I milk my goats by hand- nothing sterile about that process! Asher's book is the one I have been waiting for. His unequivocal answer to those questions is YOU DON'T. As other reviewers have noted, it is a bit early to pass judgement on the recipes as it will be weeks and months before I have the final products (watch this space), but the framework he sets out resonates with my farming philosophy and understanding of milk microbiology in a way that no other cheesemaking method has. I also did a workshop with him which was definitely worthwhile- keep an eye on his website for his events. If you want to make cheese in the natural, traditional way, THIS is the book to buy.update: Now I have delved into the book and am giving it a workout. chevre: Awesome. Better than the chevre I used to make with commercial starters. Dream cheese: incredibly easy to make and much better than cream cheese. Especially for those who are freaked out by the thickeners and other weird things in commercial cream cheese. Camembert: in the cave to age, but so far looking and smelling wonderful. Mason Jar St. Marcellin: in the process of draining, but tasting great so far. Slow Mozzarella: fail. I think I didn't let it get acidic enough before stretching. I also have never read mozzarella before, and I understand that despite it often featuring in beginner cheesemaking courses, it actually is not really a cheese for beginners. I shall try again!The process just feels so much better without all the sterilising, vanishingly small dabs of powders from the freezer, fear of bacteria and plastic stuff. A very intuitive and efficient cheesemaking experience. For example, when I made the brie and the mozzarella, the basic curd was made together in one huge pot, drained in moulds on the same draining rack, just split up when it came time to ferment the mozzarella and drain the camembert. Very cool.

Vercillo I've been waiting for this book to be released for for about 6 months now and finally received it on its release date yesterday. It was well worth the wait! The information in this book is truly unique and I know of no other source that offers the approach to cheesemaking that the author does. I am currently apprenticing as a farmstead cheesemaker, and it is very true that packaged starter cultures are the norm even for the small, farmstead, raw, grass fed (etc) cheese producers. I have been deeply immersed in the world of cheese for the past few months and this book still is teaching me a lot as I read it. All of the information and recipes are very approachable. If you have any interest in cheese making for yourself (or even a small farmstead operation) you need the book. The pictures are absolutely stunning as well. Great job! I currently have a soft ripened washed rind cheese in my cave that I made yesterday with my kefir culture according to the authors instructions. I look forward to trying the rest of the recipes!
