Well-written and accessible, this classic introduction to stochastic processes and related mathematics is appropriate for advanced undergraduate students of mathematics with a knowledge of calculus and continuous probability theory. The treatment offers examples of the wide variety of empirical phenomena for which stochastic processes provide mathematical models, and it develops the methods of probability model-building.Chapter 1 presents precise definitions of the notions of a random variable and a stochastic process and introduces the Wiener and Poisson processes. Subsequent chapters examine conditional probability and conditional expectation, normal processes and covariance stationary processes, and counting processes and Poisson processes. The text concludes with explorations of renewal counting processes, Markov chains, random walks, and birth and death processes, including examples of the wide variety of phenomena to which these stochastic processes may be applied. Numerous examples and exercises complement every section.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A Great Classic By Dr. Terrence McGarty This is a classic in stochastic processes. It is targeted to those who will use the material in practice and it is not a theoretical text. It has excellent material on martingales, Poisson Processes, Wiener processes, and the like. It is dated and I had used it when it first came out. It is useful for anyone working in the area. If one is doing research in the mathematical areas this is not the book for you. This is quite useful for those in engineering, controls and communications, and others areas using random process theory. It covers the basics.

5 of 7 people found the following review helpful. A well-written classic introduction to stochastic theory By Kris The math which goes into stochastic theory is key and fundamental; this book is a very readable introduction to the material. Where most books just have the equations (and typically in the tersest form possible), this book makes an effort to explain what is going on "in words" and through some examples. If you are in a class or working with material where a firm understanding of stochastic theory is necessary, this is a good book to help you get up to speed. This is definitely not an advanced-level book or completely up-to-date, but the basics haven't changed. If you can find it used, it is cheap, too.

This book represents an effort of around five years of part-time research, study, and writing by the author. In addition to assembling and organizing large amounts of accurate - and current - information from nearly countless sources, Mr. McDonough has also striven to describe the Korean Language in clear, engaging prose. Although written with beginning and intermediate learners in mind, even advanced users should find this handy book quite useful. Some of this data is very hard to find in any reference source (in English, anyways) and this book is much more accessible than others written by native Korean authors, professional linguists, academics, and the like. Naturally, explaining a foreign language requires some grammar terminology. However, this has been minimized and all terms are clearly explained in simple language, and also defined in a convenient glossary at the beginning of the book. The Handbook is meant to be a solid introduction to the grammar and structure of the language, as well as a reference guide to be consulted as needed. Everything you should need is very clearly laid out, with over 50 tables and lists, as well as an index. Plenty of examples are provided as well. This is the only book of its kind written in English currently available, and the only book that contains such a well-organized and useful collection of information. Part of its unique value is in the author’s careful editing and the exclusion of a lot of older, rarer ‘legacy’ grammar material that tends to haunt many Korean books. Further aiding the user, notes about frequency and general usefulness are included in many places. In addition to being a self-contained educational resource, the Handbook would nicely complement classroom study as well as the various textbooks on the market. Lastly, this might be a useful tool for Korean natives studying English. The author comes from a computer science background, and initially set out to create a user’s guide similar to those in that field (really, just for his own use). That project evolved into much more, and this book is the result. A companion vocabulary-focussed volume is due out later in 2015, and an advanced book in 2016. Other learning tools are planned as well, including an interactive Internet-based application for computers and smartphones.

Brenda Ueland stresses the idea that "Everyone is talented, original, and has something important to say." Drawing heavily on the work and influence of William Blake, she suggests that writers should "Try to discover your true, honest, un-theoretical self." Carl Sandburg called If You Want to Write "the best book ever written on how to write."

The book of a lifetime By Nigey Lennon (nigella@earthlink.net) I found this book by accident while browsing through a now-defunct Los Angeles bookstore/cafe. It was the luckiest accident of my life. At that point I had been a professional writer for more than twenty years, but I rarely enjoyed my work, and I felt all of it was disposable in one way or another. At first, reading "If You Want to Write" gave me an incredible, if unfamiliar, feeling of joy and self-confidence. Afterwards, I began to surprise the hell out of myself in terms of what I was able to accomplish. This simply written book states some of the most profound truths about life and creativity I have ever read. Whenever I get stuck on a project I go back and re-read it, and its warmth, generosity, and brilliance always inspire me to go on. It should almost be titled "If You Want to Live", because far more than being a how-to book on writing, it makes an eloquent argument that we all can live creative lives as long as we're true to ourselves.

141 of 145 people found the following review helpful. This Book Led Me to EPIPHANY By Theresa Williams I will admit from the start that this book is not for everyone. It won't appeal to all writers and artists. However, I believe the book was written for people who are looking for a way to lead an authentic life and to achieve authenticity in their art. As with Natalie Goldberg's WRITING DOWN THE BONES, this book feels as though it was written just for me, and that's the true beauty of IF YOU WANT TO WRITE. If the book speaks to you, as it did to me, you may find yourself having the first great epiphany of your artistic life. Her book sits in a prominent place in my home and in my heart. I have read it many times and underlined countless passages. As I struggled to finish my first book, I looked to Ueland for support and confidence. By far the two most memorable passages for me are the one in which she describes a time she was playing the piano and was told her playing wasn't "going anywhere." She then discusses the relationship that MUST exist between the artist and the person experiencing the art. (Her philosophy is strongly influenced by the observations of Tolstoy.) She points out that this relationship is necessary in order for us to produce meaningful art. The second passage that is extremely meaningful to me is related to the first passage. She describes the time Vincent Van Gogh wrote a letter to his brother and drew a tender image of a streetlight that he was looking at outside his window. The drawing is beautiful because it came out of his intense love for his brother and his desire to share something beautiful with him, not from a desire for recognition or fame. This is what Ueland means by authenticity, which she, like Blake, connects to the divine source existing within each individual. This book changed forever the way I view the artistic expression.

70 of 72 people found the following review helpful. Read it 'til you can't anymore By Jeremy Read this book. Read it all the way through. You might say to yourself "this is juvenile. This is naïve." But read it. Press on. Read it thoroughly. Set your mind on "accept" and let the book be right all the time. Then, read it again. Keep reading it when you are not writing. Randomly pick a page and start. Read it out of order. Perhaps you'll find the Blake, or the Van Gogh; one of her students, or one of her tirades against the niggardly busy-busy world. Read it while watching T.V.(but not while driving a car!)Soon, you just can't read it anymore. Because it's tedious? Because you've memorized it? Because its pages are stained with finger oil and falling apart?Because you will be too damn busy furiously writing. And rewriting, then writing again. You will fear--with a creaky feeling in your gut--that a short break may jettison the idea you're blessed with off into the unexpressed void, then banish the next one, and the next one, like a home-run slugger on a roll at batting practice, all which demand permanence--because they all got that something. And you don't dare stop typing (at 75 W.P.M, with pauses of concentrated, exacting thought between) because you must, you absolutely soulfully must, capture this thought perfectly, then quickly move on to the next antsy thought tapping its toe impatiently behind, before it gets insulted and walks out to planet nowhere in a huff.So read it. And I hope you read it so much that you just don't have the time to read it anymore, and it is gathering dust while your page is gathering words.

By Jackie Cooper I love the range and assortment of complex patterns plus the creative and graceful, artistic style used in every single one of these illustrations. These Captivating illustrations are Swirled, Entwined, Layered and Entangled patterns that fill every page with imaginative combinations that will inspire you. This book is perfect for those times your mind is racing, when you just cannot get to the here and now because you cannot stop thinking about work, the past , the future, just grab your colors and this book and spend a few minutes coloring. You will immediately feel calm replacing the stress and soon you will be to the here and now. This is a must have book for your coloring library and would make a wonderful gift to Adults, College Students or school aged children.1. 42 illustrations printed one per page (the back of each page is blank) on medium weight, bright white paper.2. The Illustrations are all 7/8ths of an inch in from the binding, for easy coloring, then each image goes to the edges of the other three pages.3. All markers leak through the paper, I place a piece of paper under the page I am coloring to prevent damage to the next illustration.4. All illustrations are small to medium detailed and perfect for Ultra fine markers, or Colored pencils, and some are great for Fine markers or crayons.5. I plan on using Bic Mark it Ultra Fine and Sharpie Ultra Fine markers

I have not started coloring it yet, but it is filled with great designs that make me excited to get started. There are 42 images and each image is full page with a pretty big inside margin gap, so you don't have to struggle with reaching details that hidden in between the folds of the book. The images vary from medium to highly detailed and each image has enough space to use with markers or crayons. I would probably recommend using a piece of paper in between pages, to keep the ink from leaking through, though.

Whether you are feeling mellow or stressed, this book has some design for you. I love that I can use some of my wider pencils and pens because the drawings are not so small that the tips do not fit. Some days I want bright, bold colors and others more pastel. These designs easily adapt to all color pallets. A great way to reduce stress - almost like meditating and perhaps it is meditation for those who need color. I can recommend this book - especially if you, like me, like to create zentangles.

Kokeshi from Tohoku with Love is the second edition of the best selling book that looks at the craft and culture of kokeshi dolls. Included are more profiles, over 50 more photos and several new chapters. Kokeshi are the traditional dolls that are made of wood and are characterized by their lack of arms or legs. They are produced in the Tohoku region of Japan and were originally a children's toy, although it is more often used as a form of decoration nowadays and displayed in the home. Abroad, they are considered to be an icon of Japan, and reflect Japanese aesthetic sensibilities with their simple, elegant and minimalist designs. Kokeshi have the appeal of imperfection and hand made exclusivity as no two dolls are the same, each kokeshi embodies the qualities of wood, something that is often referred to as "warmth.” In fact, for collectors, more than the freshly made kokeshi, many covet the atmosphere of the vintage kokeshi -- rather than degrading, as with plastic or artificial materials, the wood picks up a dewy, subdued colour and the delicately painted features fade gracefully with time. This book is the only English language book that looks at this culture in depth, and is the only book with English language interviews with the masters of the craft. The author, Manami Okazaki, visits all 6 prefectures of Tohoku to profile 23 artisans in the remote hot spring villages where they are made. Included are the work and interviews with the masters to the up and coming artists, and highlights many aesthetic theories and sensibilities that are prevalent in contemporary design, even today. The book also looks at Japanese hotspring culture, and Tohoku culture to paint a holistic picture of kokeshi culture. This book will delight fans of wooden crafts, Japanese culture and travellers to Japan. The book gives an insight into the psychology of the craftsman, the process of production, the motifs and the various types, which will inform the collector. This book will also suit travelers to Japan who wish to explore the Northern region of Japan, and their charming hot spring villages. Included are hundreds of photographs.

We are about to be attacked by an advanced alien civilization, the insect ancestors of our lowly ants. Book One, The Response, revealed our ants were brought here 140,000,000 years ago to rule our planet. With their interstellar colonization disrupted by the unexpected rise of human beings, the enraged aliens have decided to visit Earth with one purpose—our extermination—and they're considerably larger than their offspring. Gary Naiman has written thirteen novels. His background includes twenty years at Paramount Pictures and classified projects within the chemical and weapons industries. One of his books is being considered for a motion picture.

By Golfer Kim From the Void is better than its predecessor (The Response) because it's loaded with action, big bugs, great dialogue, and lots of tension. The best part is the first "sighting" by the two fishermen on the Arecibo River. The author's description of the beast rising above the trees in the moonlight really got to me. Fun read for anyone who loves timeless sci-fi/horror flicks like Them or Starship Troopers.

Creative and addictive plot By Amazon Customer Although, I don't read sci-fi very frequently, the plot in this book is very intriguing, and, Naiman uses a creative approach in developing this as a continuing episodic theme. I have read other works by this author so gave this a try. Read in one evening, so obviously, addictive. Although this is a sequel, the prologue gave enough background to understand the plot line and still be able to enjoy this book independently. Very fast paced action, as extra-terrestial influences are constantly at play / war. Interesting characters with emotional draws. Good story. Look forward to more like it.

A little clipped in some spots, but plenty of terror that reminded me of the sci-fi movies of the 5o's and 60's. The best part was the sighting of the alien war machines. The scenes in devastated Manhattan were vivid and quite powerful. My only regret was the rather abrupt ending. I suspect that means a third bood is coming. Worth reading if you like nostalgic sci-fi.

In this highly controversial and explosive book, archaeologist, historian, mythologist and linguist Acharya S. marshals an enormous amount of startling evidence to demonstrate that Christianity and the story of Jesus Christ were created by members of various secret societies, mystery schools and religions in order to unify the Roman Empire under one state religion. In developing such a fabrication, this multinational cabal drew upon a multitude of myths and rituals that existed long before the Christian era, and reworked them for centuries into the religion passed down to us today. Contrary to popular belief, there was no single man who was at the genesis of Christianity; Jesus was many characters rolled into one. These characters personified the ubiquitous solar myth, and their exploits were well known, as reflected by such popular deities as Mithras, Heracles/Hercules, Dionysos and many others throughout the Roman Empire and beyond. The story of Jesus as portrayed in the Gospels is revealed to be nearly identical in detail to that of the earlier savior-gods Krishna and Horus, who for millennia preceding Christianity held great favor with the people. The Christ Conspiracy shows the Jesus character as not unique or original, not “divine revelation.” Christianity reinterprets the same extremely ancient body of knowledge that revolved around the celestial bodies and natural forces. The result of this myth making has been “The Greatest Conspiracy Ever Sold.” .

Review Acharya S has done a superb job in bringing together this rich panoply of ancient world mythology and culture, and presenting it in a comprehensive and compelling fashion. She grabs the reader from the first page and doesn't let go. --Earl DohertyThe Christ Conspiracy--very, very scholarly and wholly researched--is a book for today... --Rev. B. Strauss, ex-Catholic priest, Chicago, ILAcharya S has done a service to forensic anthropology similar to what Euclid did for geometry. She has pulled together all available materials to reveal the inner workings of perhaps the biggest folly of Western man. I enjoyed it immensely. --EBTXAcharya S pulls no punches, beating her adversary to a bloody pulp... This war of words, it seems, is a battle the author takes most seriously in her righteous quest to undo 2000 years of mental slavery inflicted upon humankind. --Adam GorightlyAcharya brings in secular [and] church history, archaeology, theology, mythology, linguistics...to provide plenty of backing for her theses. An essential book for anyone who wants to know the reality behind the world's dominant religion. --Russ KickAcharya S. marshals an enormous amount of startling evidence to demonstrate that Christianity and the story of Jesus Christ were created by members of various secret societies, mystery schools and religions in order to unify the Roman Empire under one state religion.

From the Author Ever since The Christ Conspiracy was published in 1999, I have striven to demonstrate many of its major and minor contentions in a variety of books, articles, blogs, forum posts, videos and radio programs. I have spent countless hours tracking down sources as far back as possible in history, including to the earliest written records. I have sifted through thousands of ancient texts in numerous languages, including ancient Greek, Latin, Egyptian, Hebrew, Sanskrit and others. I have also pored through thousands of modern resources from highly credentialed authorities in a number of relevant disciplines. Over this past decade-plus, again, I have provided this information in freely available articles and ebooks, as well as in several follow-up books such as: Suns of God: Krishna, Buddha and Christ Unveiled; Who Was Jesus? Fingerprints of The Christ; Christ in Egypt: The Horus-Jesus Connection; and The Gospel According to Acharya S.For the most part - and with great difficulty - I have succeeded in bringing to light the sources from which came many of the contentions in The Christ Conspiracy. Some of the original, corroborative material was very challenging to find, such as various writings of ancient Church fathers and others that back up the claims in "The Characters" chapter, one of the most controversial in the entire book. This chapter discusses several ancient figures considered mostly mythological whose "lives" strangely resemble that of Jesus Christ from the gospels and Christian tradition, including Egyptian, Greek, Roman and Indian gods and godmen. From the attention and reaction this single chapter has gotten, it would seem that it alone is enough to reveal Christianity as a rehash of earlier, mythical traditions, which is the premise of this book. Over the years, common complaints I have addressed include that my sources are "outdated" and are from "19th-century scholars." In reality, I have used primary and ancient sources quite extensively, although at times I have quoted or paraphrased them through the works of more modern scholars from a few centuries ago to the current era. Since writing this book - which was researched from my own private library on a shoe-string budget - I have confirmed these citations in original works as well as in more modern, scholarly resources by the best academic publishers in the world. I refer especially to those found in my most recent works, including Who Was Jesus?, Christ in Egypt and The Gospel.Who Was Jesus? has an almost all-Christian bibliography and has received many accolades from knowledgeable and qualified individuals such as theology professors, ministers and New Testament scholars. Christ in Egypt contains 2,400 footnotes from 900 sources, including thousands of pages of ancient Egyptian writings and the works of highly credentialed individuals from a number of relevant disciplines, such as numerous well-respected Egyptologists from around the world. My follow-up book to The Christ Conspiracy, Suns of God: Krishna, Buddha and Christ Unveiled, delves into some fascinating information that again spans the range of time from antiquity to today. The tome represents a bridge between Christ Con and Christ in Egypt, researching further into the claims of the latter while recounting hard-to-find tales of skulduggery in the field of Jesus mythicism dating back centuries, revealing why this information is so difficult to find, as well as tantalizing hints of more that has been buried, lost or lied about. It also provides much evidence of the ancient religious worship of astrotheology, which to any student or scholar of religion should prove highly intriguing.Over these past several years, a trend developed with the criticisms of Christ Con, which was that many of my critics had not actually read my work but were jumping on bandwagons of others who also had not read my work or who were clearly biased, such as a number of Christian apologists. Not a few of these critics who had either not read my work or who have been true believers with an axe to grind posted reviews that made claims already refuted many times over. We find this pattern of disingenuousness or bias in many places on the internet. There have been other, more subtle reasons for bias, as remarked upon by David Mills, author of Atheist Universe, who in his review of my book Who Was Jesus? remarked, "Having given a fair hearing to some of her online detractors and their 'rebuttal' videos, I have detected not only a lack of knowledge on the part of her critics, but also, in some cases, a thinly disguised misogyny."While some of the details have changed, from my intense investigation over the years I maintain that the scenario put forth in The Christ Conspiracy represents as close to true early Christian history as anyone has gotten so far. The extensive research backing up many germane elements from the "Characters" chapter - as can be also be found in my "ZEITGEIST Sourcebook" - clearly demonstrates that Christ is a mythical rehash, albeit a unique one, of numerous motifs and characteristics of earlier gods, goddesses and godmen, along with various mysteries and wisdom sayings. All of this mythmaking was hung on the framework of "messianic scriptures" from the Old Testament and Jewish intertestamental literature, which I likewise discuss in The Christ Conspiracy.

Exciting and Provocative By Earl Doherty The further one goes into this book, the more one recognizes how vast is the mythological background of the ancient world that the modern era has completely lost sight of. Those who imagine that the Gospel story represents singular historical events are in for a shock when they realize the degree to which the Christian myth of Jesus of Nazareth was a reflection of mythical motifs and traditions which saturated ancient and even prehistoric cultures. There is barely an original or virgin bone in Christ's body, and Christians in the early centuries were regularly assailed by pagan detractors who accused them of reworking old ideas and copying from a host of predecessors. The other thing the reader comes to recognize is that Acharya S has done a superb job in bringing together this rich panoply of ancient world mythology and culture, and presenting it in a comprehensive and compelling fashion. Moreover, she grabs the reader from the first page and doesn't let go. Her style is colorful, bold, occasionally (and justifiably) indignant, even a touch reckless at times, but never off the track--a little like an exciting roller coaster ride. It may take a fair amount of concentration to absorb all this material, but even if you don't integrate everything on first reading, the broader strokes will leave you convinced that the story of Jesus is simply an imaginative refashioning of the mythological heritage of centuries and that no such man ever existed. She covers a wide range of interesting and provocative topics, with plenty of stimulating insights. Especially effective is her attention to elements of the Old Testament that one doesn't usually encounter in biblical studies: astrology in the bible, the mythological nature of much of the Old Testament material, the falsity of the idea that the Hebrews were monotheistic, even a chapter on Sex and Drugs. She delves into Egyptian and Indian precedents for the possible derivation of many of the bible's traditions. When she ranges even further afield and notes the astonishingly widespread commonality of certain religious and cultural motifs from one end of the planet to the other, extending back into very ancient times, we are on intriguing if speculative ground, but for the most part the author simply lets the data speak for itself, and readers can draw what conclusions their own adventurous spirits might wish. As for her detailed picture of how Gospel elements closely conform to astrological and mythological symbols in the atmosphere of the time, or how the story of Jesus parallels the features of other savior gods: if even half of these things were in the minds of the Gospel writers when they fashioned their symbolic tale (to which one could add the midrashic borrowing of passages from the Hebrew scriptures to provide so much of the Gospel structure, its `events' and even their wording), there can be no doubt that such writers were well aware that their work had nothing to do with history. There are those who have expressed some uncertainty about the scholarship which originally presented some of the subject matter dealt with in this book, since much of it comes from the 19th and early 20th centuries. But there is a prominent reason why today's researcher is inevitably thrown back on this early period of investigation. The so-called History of Religions School was a feature of that period, represented by such luminaries as Reitzenstein, Bousset and Cumont, and other, less famous scholars. Its conclusions about the relation of Christianity to the thought and religious expression of the time, especially in regard to the mystery cults and even solar mythology, proved very unpalatable to mainstream New Testament study. That was also the period of intense examination of the idea that no Jesus had existed at all (J. M. Robertson, Arthur Drews, the Dutch Radical School, etc.). The result was a backlash and a circling of the wagons, creating a fortress mentality against such scholarship for the latter three-quarters of the 20th century. As a result, there has been little recent investigation of that History of Religions material, especially sympathetic investigation. Acharya may draw to some degree on that older scholarship, but while certain aspects of it are necessarily a little dated, one of the things which struck me in her quotations from it (and more and more of it is now being reprinted) is how perceptive and compelling most of it continues to be. We sorely need a new History of Religions School for the 21st century, to apply modern techniques to this important ancient material. Perhaps this book will help bring that about.

My library contains works by Robertson, Whelas, Carpenter, Frazier, Campbell, Smith, Keller, Kolb and too many others to mention, but if I had to recommend ONE book to the interested student who wished to have her/his eyes opened to the unfiltered truth about christianity in particular and religion in general, that one book would be The Christ Conspiracy, by Acharya S. It takes many years of thought and effort to wade through the complete works of Josephus, various translations of the bible, numerous texts (some enlightening - some inane and dogmatic) in an honest and scholarly examination of the major creeds that exist on this planet at this point in time. If you wish to just 'skip to the end of the search' where the judeo/christian theology is concerned (or should I say astro-theology),then buy a copy of this book, read it twice, and then loan it to a friend. Archarya's work is one of the most heavily documented texts I have yet studied, and unlike some reviewers who claim to have had some difficulty verifying quotes and context where notations are concerned, I had none of these difficulties. Moreover, I found that her conclusions, where drawn, were accurate and reasoned. A certain 'spirit' in the style of her writings is refreshing. The reader must keep in mind however, that this is a purposefully confrontational and brutally eye-opening text. If you are content believing that the Creator of the entire inner and outer universes found it necessary to "atone" for human "sins"by impregnating a little virgin girl 2000 years ago, growing into a God/man so that It could be tortured to death by the humans, and further, that this God wishes humankind to drink blood and eat God flesh on a regular basis as a remembrance of the holy death, then don't buy this book! If you suspect that the true meaning of life, and God's plan has nothing to do christianity, or any other religion for that matter, then gain some strength by getting some truth - read Christ Conspiracy and bolster that knowlege with any of the other texts referenced by Acharya. I loved it, and would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a wide ranging - yet easy read on this fascinating subject.

Today, with the easy access to scholarship, there is NO excuse for anyone seeking knowledge, truth & understanding to continue living the life of a Stepford wife.

Voyage of The Paper Canoe, by Nathaniel H. Bishop

About the Author 1837-1902

Excerpt. © Reprinted by permission. All rights reserved. When he was 17, Nathaniel Bishop hiked 1,000 miles across South America. Later in life, he became interested in canoes. In 1874, he set off with a friend in an 18-foot wooden canoe, determined to find the most direct passage along natural and manmade waterways from the cold and rocky Gulf of St. Lawrence to the semitropical waters of the Gulf of Mexico.

When he arrived in New York, he encountered a manufacturer of paper boats, and he decided these crafts were much superior to the one he had. Ditching his companion and the wooden boat, Bishop set off to finish the trip alone in his new paper canoe. Though he was "frequently lost in the labyrinth of creeks and marshes which skirt the southern coast of this country", he eventually made it to the Gulf of Mexico in 1875. He had paddled 2,000 miles on his own in a 58-lb paper canoe. If you think this sounds crazy, you are not alone:

"Everywhere along the route the peculiar character of the paper canoe attracted many remarks from the bystanders. The first impression given was that I had engaged in this rowing enterprise under the stimulus of a bet; and when the curious were informed that it was a voyage of study, the next question was 'How much are you going to make out of it?' Upon learning that there was neither a bet nor money in it, a shade of disappointment and incredulity rested upon the features of the bystanders, and the canoeist was often rated as a 'blockhead' for risking his life without being paid for it."

Bishop's narrative is interesting because he is re-exploring supposedly known territory, and his book is full of contrasts between the wilds he traverses and the cities he passes through. While many adventure stories, though true, seem far-off and impossible to the common reader, Bishop's descriptions make such feats seem feasible even today:

"Every instinct was now challenged, and every muscle brought into action, as I dodged tug-boats, steamers, yachts, and vessels, while running the thoroughfare along the crowded wharves between New York on one side and Jersey City on the other. I found the slips between the piers most excellent ports of refuge at times, when the ferry-boats, following each other in quick succession, made the river with its angry tide boil like a vortex. The task soon ended, and I left the Hudson at Castle Garden and entered the upper bay of New York harbor. As it was dark, I would gladly have gone ashore for the night, but a great city offers no inducement for a canoeist to land as a stranger at its wharves."

Much of the time, however, the author is paddling along creeks and through marshes in uninhabited and wild areas:

"...the inhospitable marshes became wide and desolate, warning me to secure a timely shelter for the night...the high reeds were divided by a little creek, into which I ran my canoe, for upon the muddy bank could be seen a deserted, doorless fish-cabin, into which I moved my blankets and provisions, after cutting with my pocket-knife an ample supply of dry reeds for a bed. Drift-wood, which a friendly tide had deposited around the shanty, furnished the material for my fire, which lighted up the dismal hovel most cheerfully. And thus I kept house in a comfortable manner till morning, being well satisfied with the progress I had made that day in traversing the shores of three states."

All this is punctuated with edge-of-the-seat adventure, like when Bishop capsizes in the Delaware Bay (the only time, incredibly):

"The boat having turned keel up, her great sheer would have righted her had it not been for the cargo, which settled itself on the canvas deck-cloth, and ballasted the craft in that position. So smooth were her polished sides that it was impossible to hold on to her, for she rolled about like a slippery porpoise in a tideway. Having tested and proved futile the kind suggestions of writers on marine disasters, and feeling very stiff in the icy water, I struck out in an almost exhausted condition for the shore...I found I could not get my head above water to breathe, while the sharp sand kept in suspension by the agitated water scratched my face, and filled my eyes, nostrils, and ears...The land was not over an eighth of a mile away, and from it came the sullen roar of the breakers, pounding their heavy weight upon the sandy shingle. As its booming thunders or its angry, swashing sound increased, I knew I was rapidly nearing it, but, blinded by the boiling waters, I could see nothing..."

The Voyage of the Paper Canoe is full of geographical and historical information which provides a background to the adventure, including lore of the native peoples of the east coast. Bishop also gives detailed information about the exact process of paper boat-making, and there are many touching portraits of the human kindness he encountered along the way.

But beware that "The Echo Library" reprint does not include the maps or illustrations from earlier editions. Consequently I had to reduce my review to four stars. For those readers who are not averse to some cutting and pasting, the book's original maps and illustrations are available at [...].

By Frank Eaton An incredible journey for any time, but even more amazing for the period just after the civil war during "Reconstruction". Bishop had the ability to not only describe his journey, but characterize the people in the area he travelled with a discerning eye.

It can be too diffuse in theme, or too rigid. The stories can vary so wildly in quality that you're embarrassed for some of the writers, or they can cluster so that nothing peeks above the horizon of mediocrity as a landmark.Hanzai Japan, like The Future is Japanese and Phantasm Japan before it, manages to dial in on anthology excellence with a strong selection of stories that are both diverse and focused, and consistently above-average. Combining Japanese work in translation with pieces from English-language authors who have the chops to treat Japan as a real setting and not just a cyberpunk wonderland has worked out beautifully for this series. This third entry focuses on crime stories with a fantastic element, the peanut butter and chocolate of crossed genres. The stories you will find here range all the way from fun romps to haunting meditations on human frailty and perversity.Stand-out stories included "Run!" by Kaori Fujino, the first fresh take on 'inside the mind of a serial killer' that I have seen in many a long day; Carrie Vaughn's "The Girl Who Loved Shonen Knife", an entertaining nod to teenage fandom that is both knowing and energetic; the dream-like "Sky Spider" by Yusuke Miyauchi; and not one but two stories in which maps play an important role - "[dis.]" by the always-excellent Genevieve Valentine and "Monologue of a Universal Transverse Mercator Projection" by Yumeaki Hirayama, a striking story that reads as though Hans Christian Anderson and Edgar Allan Poe had a baby who was brought forward in time and reared on the work of James Cain.If you have any love at all for crime, the fantastic, or Japan, you should definitely check this out.

Surprisingly cohesive and fun By Benoit Lelievre Short story anthologies are tough to rate because they feature so many voices and go so many different ways narratively that you're bound not to fall in love with their but not hate them either. HANZAI JAPAN was very well put as everybody was familiar with the narrative arts of Japan and exploited the richness of the theme to the extent of all its crazy possibilities.I thought (.dis) by Genevieve Valentine kicked things off in style. It's a crime story that had the haunting and atmospheric inflections of Japanese writer Yasunari Kawabata. I got a kick out of Ray Banks' sumo story too and Violet LeVoit's sneaky-good Electric Palace, which was a creative way of discussing the hierarchies of traditional Japanese society in a manner that reminded me of Satoshi Kon.My two favorite stories though were JIGOKU by Naomi Hirahara and THE SAITAMA CHAIN SAW MASSACRE by Hiroshi Sakurazaka, which are so good I'm not even going to spoil but if you, like me, are an early-period Takashi Miike fan, you're not going to be disappointed. Very enjoyable collection over all. Not all the stories worked for me, but I had a blast with the ones that did.

I cannot recommend this book to beginners By Philip Gleason As a retired professional programmer, I cannot recommend this book to beginners, or to programmers who want to learn Prolog. The casual style fails to cover the language, it's weak on examples and weak conceptually.

I was feeling pretty confident by the time I was only half way through I'm now thinking of moving on to something of similar interest but this book has definitely helped make the difference on whether I wanted to per say get my feet wet and jump into the world of programming.
